John I grew up fishing East Tennessee but Elkhorn is my home creek now. My friends own that parking lot, it’s at a church they have converted into a music venue. Funny story about that spot you put in…I took my brother there one evening so he could catch his first smallmouth. On my first cast I hooked into a nice one that was fighting hard. We were bank fishing and I had lost some weight. The fish was taking drag when my pants fell around my ankles. I scooted around naked as a baby but landed it. Thank you John for the spirit of your videos. I miss East Tennessee so much I could cry.
Love it! Reminded me of the time my two brothers and I were playing some 2 on 2 wiffle ball with my dad. My dad was a pretty hefty man and on one of his "at bats" he hit the ball and began to run to first (and only) base. You guessed it. His pants fell down. I think we had to stop playing at that point due to the intense laughter that ensued! Thanks for helping me to remember that magical moment! Blessings!
It's great to see you guys get back together and fish. Thanks for taking us with you. I was expecting the sandwich to be salami since that's what Matt caught his PB smallie on.😂😂😂
The North Elkhorn was my favorite place to fish when I lived in Frankfort … 50 years ago. Delighted to see the smallmouth are as plentiful as ever. It was also an excellent fly fishing stream for rock bass and longear sunfish as well. Thank you for bringing back some happy fishing memories!
@@MattsFishinMission anytime 😊 I super appreciate ya commenting to me!!! That made my day Matt!! I have done about 5 or 6 videos with Jon but it was before I started my UA-cam channel!!! I have to say that I don't remember ever seeing a video where the faces of two men on the water showed so much joy! Like two little kids just enjoying life! This was truly a beautiful place! My favorite part of the video was when you said: "So naturally I threw in and caught the one that he missed. That's what good friends do." Perfect! 🤣😂 Then Matt casts and catches the biggest fish of the day. Can you say "Divine Retribution?" Great collaboration!
Whooooo wheeeee there, Brother John! That had to be the most, that I'd ever seen you have to drag your Kayak over low parts of a Stream, in my life! I can't even begin to imagine, just how tired you were, after all that. I'll bet you slept good that night. Looks like you had a great time, though...and at least you were able to catch fish, even if they weren't exactly as big as you wanted them to be. Have a great weekend, Brother John!
Excellent Elkhorn trip, been wanting to get up there for years with all the family visits to South Central KY. Great to see you teaming up with Matt. 2 very solid dudes and smallies to boot. I enjoyed the virtual trip with you brother. Blessings
Thank you for sharing this video this was the ultimate river fishing experience a truly beautiful tune spent there in Kentucky! And what makes this experience so mush fun is doing it with Matt! Tight lines take care and God bless!
This is my local creek, been fishing it for 20+ years. You need to try the lower section. From where you took out to the Peaks Mill Bridge/AW Parking. Catch it at about 350 on the USGS gauge and there is very little whitewater. Much better fishing and much bigger fish (22" PB from the section mentioned). From Peaks Mill to where US 127 crosses the river is 2nd option for a trip.
Out next to the hatchery is deadly late summer with shad moving up in the creek. And if the water gets up and stained you’ll have big catfish come up from the river chasing the shad.
Ive waded the whole section from Switzer bridge to the forks, ive taken a canoe and john boat from switzer up a ways on the high side. Waded lower section from Weisenburger for a bit too. Fished around elkhorn campground and from forks halfway to dam at distillery. Awesome fishing. Even around Georgetown areas. Hope you come back and explore more of it.
Yum pulse swimbait in pearl color seems to work well... I use them in late winter during lake draw down. For some reason bass seem to really chase it that time of year.
Great video and great fishing!! Look like you and Matt had a great time fishing!! Have a good day and weekend. Take care and god bless. Thank you for sharing!!
I sold a future beach angler 144 a few years ago, it was a sit on. Really good kayak two hatches that gave you easy access to bolt on accessories. Only downside was the seat(no frame). I miss that kayak I caught a lot of fish in that. John you should have dragged that out of there, it would have been an awesome video of you fishing in that with your broken paddle.😂
Hey John nice video as usual. Thanks for sharing your secret location. I read it in magazines now I get to see it in live action can’t get better then this.
"And HE made the fowls and the fishes' !! Great seeing you back with Matt ! Looks like ya'll had a good tiring day. The color on those smallies was beautiful. Interesting water shoes you were wearing, are they new ? I crossed over the Tennessee a few days ago, is it still as muddy? Hope you get to do more fishing in Kentucky. As always, be careful. We care about you and we always need content ! LOL ! Pap Blevins in S.E. KY
That's the one thing about Ol' Mountain Trout... they're finicky eaters...annnnd it seems like they get spooked really easily. It's like ya gotta maintain a super-low profile, when you're trying to sneak up on 'em... which is half the game, right there. The second half of the game, is trying to guess what they're eating, and/or WHEN they're eating! But-If you can nail those two items down, then you just might be able to catch a nice mess of 'em!
Awesome video John! I live in Lexington and was bank fishing where you guys put in a couple of weeks ago. It will probably be next Spring/Summer before I can get back there but I plan to kayak the same section you two did.
It took me a minute to figure out creek fishing after moving from lakes and the ocean. Its a different game. Mepps like spinners and square bills are the ticket for me. you will catch 3 or 4 out of the same school before they stop biting sometimes. I don't see much over 12 inch mark unless its a carp or shad myself. I fish they Guyandotte in WV and its loaded with smallies and large mouths. I walk it so I don't fish the deep parts im sure there are some big ones in the deep areas.
Nice dude! I do a lot of Kayak Catfishing videos on the Elkhorn Creek, I live right beside it I could show you some very cool creeks sometime. I know a lot of trophy smallmouth bass holes around here.
Before I watched the video I was going to say I’ve caught a lot of smallmouth out of Elkhorn the last time I was fishing about 7 years ago I caught a 5 pound smallmouth out of slate creek in Bath County and he had scars all over I guess been into it with a big Muskie.
I enjoy your show and it seems like you're knowledgeable....but please share your tackle, time of year, and water temp.... I've been wade/ creek fishing last 40+ years and id love to learn....I don't expect a location....Lol
