Wow, Brant. It’s like you made this video just for me. And that’s the best set of tips EVER on cleaning a Jackfish. I’ve eaten literally hundreds of largemouth bass starting back in the late 70s as a flight instructor at Whiting Field. Always liked them.
In the late 70’s I was stationed at Eglin AFB. Used to go to Blackwater State Park for really nice canoe trips. It was a nice change from going to the beach all the time.
Great video Brant love the variety you got with the new location changing things up are always good and as far as the bass goes I'm in the midwest they're highly sought-after for eating although my favorite is crappie and bluegill as far as frying

We kept alot of the fish including blue gill, crappie, small mouth bass, large mouth bass, walleye pike, northern pike and of course catfish and bull head. we releast the carp unless someone had the smoker fired up around football season. Des moines river in iowa was our hotspot. thanks for all you do to bring us the best past time ever created ....

Couldn't agree more with what you said about largemouth bass. On a good day on the lake, there were always two or three 1 to 2 pounders that were coming home for dinner.

I don’t think it’s the tastes of bass that keep people away. I believe it’s the “trophy” fisherman that are against eating them (especially freshwater fishermen)
@@RobertJi01The crazier thing is how many of those same people will keep a “trophy”, especially from a smaller body of water. Big fish are usually the most productive females in the fishery in regard to sustainability. Removing them has the potential to destroy the ecosystem. These same people will then complain that they used to catch great fish in some area, and now it’s a dead zone. They fail to see how their actions could have had any impact on the future. I speak from personal experience I wish I didn’t have.
@@bitefishing I agree. It’s a bit oversimplified but definitely accurate! Most lakes that host major tournaments that I’ve fished normally have a slot limit to protect the larger fish in the water. Smaller less regulated lakes equally suffer from harvest issues and stress induced kills from tournaments. Still, smaller waterbodies benefit from harvesting 1-2lbers. I used to have property that bordered a lake absolutely overrun with dinks. All skinny and not healthy.

Brant, actually chain pickerel IS a sub-species of pike. It is in the pike family, except it is much smaller than the northern pike. And, indeed it is incredibly delicious like all pikes.
Having grown up in the north I have eaten my share of LMB and Pickerel. They are both very tasty fish. When cleaning Pickerel we always just cut the head and tail off, then removed the guts. We then cooked them in a large piece. After the fish meat was cooked if you grab the back bone and lift gently the bones will come out of the meat as it will flake off. You don't get every single one, but I think you leave less behind than your way. Anyway, just another perspective, learned this technique in Canada where they eat and catch a lot of Pickerel. I was amazed that you caught Pickerel in Florida because I thought it was a cold water northern fish. There are lots of them in Canada and northern U.S. in the cold lakes up there.

I have no idea why, Florida has always treated it as a trash fish, Not so in Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky. Tenn. I noticed it as soon as I moved here.
I've only caught like 3 or 4 Chain Pickerel in my life. 2 were in the Everglades off Alligator Alley. 1 was in the French Broad River in Asheville, NC. Rare catch. Awesome hookup. I ate the ones I caught, and they were really good 10/10. Really white, flaky meat.
That looks like a fun day and a really cool place to fish. I found it interesting to see you catching pickerel in such a different environment, because where I am, I mostly catch them ice fishing. I agree they're delicious, but the ones I keep go into the food processer to make fish cakes so I don't have to deal with all the bones.
That trout is huge ! I love your backyard kitchen. It has everything you need. I just looked up your gorgeous KHTD deep fryer thinking it's got to be super expensive, and it's not ! Only about $125 bucks !! What an AWESOME kitchen appliance.
We call that the 5 filet method and use that for northern pike or we smoke them whole at this size. Very tasty too and i love the meatyness of pike. Awesome Video Brant and much love from germany.

I will have to agree with you Brant on the largemouth being great tablefare. I have both large and small mouth in my freezer from Saturday. Hopefully I'll find some crappie to go with them for my next fish fry. Great content.
Great video. I love the way you hop around to different fishing locations. As far as lmb as far back as i can remember the freshwater fishing shows preached catch and release. So as time went on people thought it was because they tasted bad.
H-Town here! We grew up in similar environments. My grandfather showed me the ropes in Beaumont, Texas. We would start out catching freshwater and end up in Port Arthur or Sabine Pass. Same results, plus a few other species, minus the Jackfish. Crappie's my all-time favorite. Appreciate the video.
Good video. Here in Texas most the people I know eat bass , crappie, perch, and catfish. Just moved to SA area and they have fresh water reds but they have to keep them stocked because they don't reproduce in freshwater. awesome outside kitchen setup too.

I’m from near Toronto, Ontario Canada and I/We love the taste of both Large mouth And Small mouth bass!! And now that I’ve Almost perfected filleting what We call Northern pike, yours is Jack or chain pickerel, I absolutely love it as well!! Your Jack is Much whiter meat colour than our pike. Ours is a Tan/orangey colour. Great videos, keep em coming!! 😉👍

I love all of your content brother. Especially when you fry up LMB. They are very good if you take care of the fish. Smaller is better as you well know. I eat them from 14-16 inch. Bigger than that they generally go back unless they are bleeding bad. Then I keep them regardless. Thanks so much for showing us Northern guys how it's done while we sit on the ice and lament for Summer. We had chain pickerel where I grew up in Pennsylvania. They don't get as big as pike, but taste better in my opinion.
Awesome video, as usual. One thing I miss about living in Wisconsin is eating walleye. I haven't had any saltwater fish that taste anywhere near as good as walleye!
Nice catch and cook. Looks delicious. I've heard good chefs say that soaking or rinsing (salt water) fish with fresh water makes it become mushy and fall apart while cooking. He recommended just wiping the fish with a paper towel to clean blood or scales off. Keeping the fish in iced brine as soon as possible during the outing apparently helps the texture as well.
When it comes to large mouth bass I agree 💯% that they are a good eating fish but it’s sought after as such a trophy that no one really keeps them because they are throwing them back to get bigger till they become a trophy! That’s just my deduction from the experience I have as an angler. 🤔🤔🤔
I fished Lake Okeechobee for many years. The water always stayed warm and the bass stayed in the weeds year round. They tasted like weeds unless you soaked them in milk for a few days in the refrigerator. Really wasn't worth the effort and they still had a hint of weed to them. Every once in a while someone would say, "try this", or "try that"...still weedy. Thanks for the video. Had fun watching and learned how to fillet pickerel.
I come from new york and when went up state we'd catch pickerel and they were damn good,boney AF like you said and even the lmb were incredible,love the video,haven't had to eat those in a while but trout and mangrove inshore is prob my favorite,but you throw in sheep's and flounder things change lol,but man you can make any fish edible,my fav fish...is fish thanks bud
I caught a 5 pound bass (on 4 lb mono) a few weeks ago and decided to bake him. I brined him in the refrigerator in a mixture of salt water and white vinegar for a couple of hours. I them baked him covered in foil with nothing but salt and butter. I was astounded at how good the meat was. It was firm and sweet. You could simply pull the meat off the bones with a fork and dab it in the butter and bam! It was awesome. I got that brining trick from an old black gentleman I used to run into on the Chattahoochee River. He would catch and keep these great big carp which people consider trash fish. I asked him how good they were, and he said they were great. He told me he soaked the filets in white vinegar and buttermilk overnight and made fish stew with them. Brining with white vinegar, which is a natural meat tenderizer, is a good option for strong tasting fish or larger fish which are a bit tough.
I am originally from upstate NY and believe eating bass was always discouraged by the elitist bass club tournament fishing clubs . Was always told to preserve the species the bass must be returned to their habitat. I'm 73 now and still break my traditions and eat every (almost) bass I catch, and I still love the taste and texture of them! It reminds me of grouper.
I grew up eating frshwater fish. For trout, because it's so delicate, you want to descale it, cut the filet, but leave the skin on. Then pan fry it rather than deep fry. This will allow you to add some other flavors to it and it hold together and allows you to scrape the fish off the skin (or not). But LMB is really good too.
Man I love eating them green river football bass in Louisiana. I think most ppl see bass as a sport trophy fish but they are a great fish to eat. When I started fishing redfish tournaments redfish didn’t make it to the menu unless I was in Louisiana at somebody’s fish fry or at a restaurant so I get the whole sport fish deal but imo crappie and hybrid or white bass are great to eat as well!!! What a great video! First off you killed it on filleting that chain pickerel. That how we clean those, musky and pike (you're right they are similar but CP are different). I love eating large mouth bass, but remember moat people that catch LMB are eating crappie, walleye and SMB. So as good as they are, I think it goes in this order, crappie, wiper, walleye, pike, SMB and LMB. If you're ever in Utah I'll put you on some wiper (striper/white bass hybrid) pound for pound best fighting fish here in Utah and absolutely delicious.
I have caught mini pickerel but I have stayed away from cleaning them or eating them because I really didn't know how thank you for making a nice easy pictorial and I know with experience you can get better at it. Just never heard of how to do it before heard something about a person spooning the meat from the bone but thank you for your pictorial here on this greatly appreciated
Love the land type fishing. We like the bass but my boat captain his boat his rules won’t let me keep bass. So I load up his live well with hand size bluegill in an lowa lake. Keep up the variety of fishing.
As a kid I would come down to Milton to a aunts place during the summer. Coming out of Milton crossed the bridge their was a convenient store took a right went down a few miles turned right, then down to the left about 2miles to the end of a point. her place was on the left. There was an old bar/ restaurant out there if I remember correctly. But this is memory from 50 years ago.have looked on Google maps maps but it looks like her place isn't even there anymore.
I have eaten bass and found them to be delicious. I’m in MN and I have done fish fry’s for family and friends using walleye and northern pike and not told people which was which and asked what they liked better. It was 100% pike. Walleye are so simple to clean though.
I ate a ton of large mouth bass before I started running into people that just wouldn't do it. Probably the mosthai large mouth for food was from Michigan and Georgia, which just seems really weird, but thank you for the great video.Keep crushing it
I have eaten LMB for most of my adult life. To me, it's the best fresh fish to eat followed by tilapia. I like speckled trout baked and would like to see that on a catch clean and cook video.
Growing up as a kid, I did a lot of fishing. I’ve never heard of a speckled trout if I’m saying it right my favorite fish to eat was rainbow trout, and largemouth bass
Large mouth bass are excellent baked whole, especially when the water is cold. I like the ones around 18 to 20 inches long. I let the big ones go so they can spawn.
The number one freshwater fish fried in my opinion is the Walleye, but Pike, Crappie and bluegill are a close second. Never ate pickerel but I would believe they would be really similar
I thought the pickerel was a northern pike, so I did some research and yes they are not the same fish but in the same family. So I assume it tastes the same as northern. Just found out this year that Canadians refer to northern as Canadian lobster. Lol. Great vid

Iam from the Milton area and watch your videos i fish in a lot of areas you do around Pensacola but I was at that same bridge a few days ago in Milton and caught 3 different fish one 20 inch striped bass a few white trout and some decent size croaker

My wife and I just drove the whole stretch of Willard Norris Road until I reached Chumuckla road but there was only one bridge we saw and it didn’t look like the bridge in your video and so’s the creek. I couldn’t see water on both sides and there was no elevated concrete abutment for pedestrians on both sides of the bridge, but I didn’t stop to check thoroughly. I’m just wondering.
Lady fish are great bait, for tarpon and big snook! I used an enormous lady fish on longboat key pass bridge for my 32 pound snook. Caught tarpon over 100 pounds with them ..
I ate LMB growing up either on the grill or fried. caught/cooked pretty much anything that was good eating at its size. Maybe people get weird about it because some folks make a living off it (tournaments) so they consider it a sport fish. Fishing license ain't free nor is tackle so I better be replacing some lbs on the kitchen table and aim for a profitable year.
I stay in central fl. New angler. Great video. I'd eat a bass but not a super huge one for trophy. Personal preference no shade. I eat practically anything that comes out the lake as well.
Minnesota fisherman here. With my pike I never eat the belly meat. If no Game warden is around they make a great big fish bait. Of course its legal in FLA. Did not know there was a southern variant.
Yeah, I live in Beaumont, TX and fish the local waters when I have time but I grew up in the Chicago area and I prefer fresh water fish. Yellow perch, red-ear, pumpkin seed, and bluegill are my favorites. Not to say I don't like saltwater fish though..
Brant, watch how to filet a northern pike. You can remove the Y bones so they are entirely boneless. My guess is it will work on the Chain Pickeral the same way. Check it out.

It’s true, as they are a more popular trophy type fish in some circles it’s taboo to eat them, I think all fresh water bass are good
Up north I don't think bass taste good compared to other fish. It may be different in Florida

They tasted like weeds unless you soaked them in milk for a few days in the refrigerator. Really wasn't worth the effort and they still had a hint of weed to them. Every once in a while someone would say, "try this", or "try that"...still weedy. Thanks for the video. Had fun watching and learned how to fillet pickerel.

I come from new york and when went up state we'd catch pickerel and they were damn good,boney AF like you said and even the lmb were incredible,love the video,haven't had to eat those in a while but trout and mangrove inshore is prob my favorite,but you throw in sheep's and flounder things change lol,but man you can make any fish edible,my fav fish...is fish thanks bud
I caught a 5 pound bass (on 4 lb mono) a few weeks ago and decided to bake him. I brined him in the refrigerator in a mixture of salt water and white vinegar for a couple of hours. I them baked him covered in foil with nothing but salt and butter. I was astounded at how good the meat was. It was firm and sweet. You could simply pull the meat off the bones with a fork and dab it in the butter and bam! It was awesome.
I got that brining trick from an old black gentleman I used to run into on the Chattahoochee River. He would catch and keep these great big carp which people consider trash fish. I asked him how good they were, and he said they were great. He told me he soaked the filets in white vinegar and buttermilk overnight and made fish stew with them.
Brining with white vinegar, which is a natural meat tenderizer, is a good option for strong tasting fish or larger fish which are a bit tough.
I spend so much time on that corner where pond creek and blackwater meet. I love fishing over by the old saw mill
I am originally from upstate NY and believe eating bass was always discouraged by the elitist bass club tournament fishing clubs . Was always told to preserve the species the bass must be returned to their habitat. I'm 73 now and still break my traditions and eat every (almost) bass I catch, and I still love the taste and texture of them! It reminds me of grouper.

I grew up eating frshwater fish. For trout, because it's so delicate, you want to descale it, cut the filet, but leave the skin on. Then pan fry it rather than deep fry. This will allow you to add some other flavors to it and it hold together and allows you to scrape the fish off the skin (or not). But LMB is really good too.
Man I love eating them green river football bass in Louisiana. I think most ppl see bass as a sport trophy fish but they are a great fish to eat. When I started fishing redfish tournaments redfish didn’t make it to the menu unless I was in Louisiana at somebody’s fish fry or at a restaurant so I get the whole sport fish deal but imo crappie and hybrid or white bass are great to eat as well!!! What a great video! First off you killed it on filleting that chain pickerel. That how we clean those, musky and pike (you're right they are similar but CP are different). I love eating large mouth bass, but remember moat people that catch LMB are eating crappie, walleye and SMB. So as good as they are, I think it goes in this order, crappie, wiper, walleye, pike, SMB and LMB.
If you're ever in Utah I'll put you on some wiper (striper/white bass hybrid) pound for pound best fighting fish here in Utah and absolutely delicious.
I have caught mini pickerel but I have stayed away from cleaning them or eating them because I really didn't know how thank you for making a nice easy pictorial and I know with experience you can get better at it. Just never heard of how to do it before heard something about a person spooning the meat from the bone but thank you for your pictorial here on this greatly appreciated
Pike are delicious; one of my favorite fish. I didn't know they inhabited waters that far down South. LMBs are also REALLY good eating.

Love the land type fishing. We like the bass but my boat captain his boat his rules won’t let me keep bass. So I load up his live well with hand size bluegill in an lowa lake. Keep up the variety of fishing.
Here in North central Arkansas, we love them bass, especially me. We fish the White River, BullShoal Lake, Table Rock, and Crooked Creek.
As a kid I would come down to Milton to a aunts place during the summer. Coming out of Milton crossed the bridge their was a convenient store took a right went down a few miles turned right, then down to the left about 2miles to the end of a point. her place was on the left. There was an old bar/ restaurant out there if I remember correctly. But this is memory from 50 years ago.have looked on Google maps maps but it looks like her place isn't even there anymore.
I have eaten bass and found them to be delicious. I’m in MN and I have done fish fry’s for family and friends using walleye and northern pike and not told people which was which and asked what they liked better. It was 100% pike. Walleye are so simple to clean though.
Agree with you...chain pickeral (jackfish) taste great...just have to catch a large one to be able to get enough without bones to eat...
I ate a ton of large mouth bass before I started running into people that just wouldn't do it. Probably the mosthai large mouth for food was from Michigan and Georgia, which just seems really weird, but thank you for the great video.Keep crushing it

I have eaten LMB for most of my adult life. To me, it's the best fresh fish to eat followed by tilapia. I like speckled trout baked and would like to see that on a catch clean and cook video.
Growing up as a kid, I did a lot of fishing. I’ve never heard of a speckled trout if I’m saying it right my favorite fish to eat was rainbow trout, and largemouth bass

Large mouth bass are excellent baked whole, especially when the water is cold. I like the ones around 18 to 20 inches long. I let the big ones go so they can spawn.

The number one freshwater fish fried in my opinion is the Walleye, but Pike, Crappie and bluegill are a close second. Never ate pickerel but I would believe they would be really similar
I thought the pickerel was a northern pike, so I did some research and yes they are not the same fish but in the same family. So I assume it tastes the same as northern. Just found out this year that Canadians refer to northern as Canadian lobster. Lol. Great vid

Iam from the Milton area and watch your videos i fish in a lot of areas you do around Pensacola but I was at that same bridge a few days ago in Milton and caught 3 different fish one 20 inch striped bass a few white trout and some decent size croaker

My wife and I just drove the whole stretch of Willard Norris Road until I reached Chumuckla road but there was only one bridge we saw and it didn’t look like the bridge in your video and so’s the creek. I couldn’t see water on both sides and there was no elevated concrete abutment for pedestrians on both sides of the bridge, but I didn’t stop to check thoroughly. I’m just wondering.

Lady fish are great bait, for tarpon and big snook! I used an enormous lady fish on longboat key pass bridge for my 32 pound snook. Caught tarpon over 100 pounds with them ..

I ate LMB growing up either on the grill or fried. caught/cooked pretty much anything that was good eating at its size. Maybe people get weird about it because some folks make a living off it (tournaments) so they consider it a sport fish. Fishing license ain't free nor is tackle so I better be replacing some lbs on the kitchen table and aim for a profitable year.

I stay in central fl. New angler. Great video. I'd eat a bass but not a super huge one for trophy. Personal preference no shade. I eat practically anything that comes out the lake as well.
Minnesota fisherman here. With my pike I never eat the belly meat. If no Game warden is around they make a great big fish bait. Of course its legal in FLA. Did not know there was a southern variant.

Yeah, I live in Beaumont, TX and fish the local waters when I have time but I grew up in the Chicago area and I prefer fresh water fish. Yellow perch, red-ear, pumpkin seed, and bluegill are my favorites. Not to say I don't like saltwater fish though..
Try some Great Lakes Perch or Walleye = look out momma - they are Greeeat!
Brant, watch how to filet a northern pike. You can remove the Y bones so they are entirely boneless. My guess is it will work on the Chain Pickeral the same way. Check it out.
