11:57 Hey man, what kind of 2k clearcoat did you use here? Im wondering what clearcoat I can use over my cars painted with Duplicolor Autospray car paint that will hopefully give them a shinier finish (not RLC level, just glossyish) and will protect them from damage as i have had a few issues with the paint flaking off. Thanks!
Hey Neon! The clear I used on this vid is SprayMax 2K clear which is great but it has a pot life of 48 hours. Up until recently I switched to Car Rep 2K clear which is also great but has no pot life. That's my definite #1 recommendation as far as spray can clear coats go! 💯 I'm now using a 2-part automotive 2K clear using an airbrush. If the paint is flaking then the clear might not be thick enough or durable enough. The 2K will be harder, more durable, and give quite the nice shine. 😁👍
Alright so this was awesome. I think it’s awesome to have a Spectraflame option other than airbrush, that’s great for the majority of customizers. You are killing me though doing this in the garage....by your car! Great tips on heating the paint brother! You covered all the bases.

Thanks Airgun! Im really trying to think of a way to do straight up spectra teal with the metalcast paint. Either that or hope they come out with teal. 😁👊
Hi great work did everything as you yet my paint job chipped with the lightest of hits. Pushed another hot wheel against it and a big chunk cracked off.on accident _Not sure where I went wrong tried a bit and sane . Maybe it's because there is no primer. AutoZone advised to use the primer. Hmmm thanks tho
Yes you have to be EXTREMELY careful when using the metalcast on a bare body. Anything will chip or scratch the paint right off! I don't recommend touching the paint and keeping things away from it to avoid it. Its the nature of the circumstances when trying to achieve that spectraflame/RLC appearance, you cant use primer if you want that look unfortunately. 👊😩
This is awesome. Im gonna have to try it your way. How many rounds of clear coats I need to do for the finish product? And do you recommend putting a primer coat before using the spectraflame spray paint? I did my clear coat heavy but It did not turn out well.
Hey Kulture! So no undercoat/primer, if you want a spectra or RLC look you need to spray it direct on a brushed or polished body. Because of this you definitely dont want to touch or scratch it after spraying the MetalCast. Clear depends, but I usually go for about three or four solid coats. Not heavy, but enough to ensure a uniform and shiney coverage after spraying. 👊😁👍
@@HonestDiecast thanks for responding. I do one thing that I did notice one thing when I do the clear coat, it leaves white spots. Does it have to do with the weather temperature or my main paint wasn’t dry yet?
Can we get tutorials on the stand you made from the paper towel roller and cup!? There have to be something else holding it! Lol. I use alligator clip with wood stick currently if I want to hold my Diecast but yours so sturdy!
Thanks Jackson! Its super easy, just take a paper towel roll and a larger red plastic drinking cup. Cut a hole in the bottom of the cup just a bit smaller than the roll, turn cup upside down and insert roll. Thats it! 😁👊
Have a question,I used to do paint and body for over 25 years and I'm getting into diecast because I can't do my old work anymore, question is what makes the paint stick to a completey slick surface like the polished ones?
Thats a great question and no doubt probably a head scratcher for an experienced painter. The key is an extremely clean surface prepped with 90%+ rubbing alcohol, acetone, or any type of hard cleaner/purifying agent or degreaser. Ive even used brake clean in the past, but acetone has worked best for me. I usually dunk the car in acetone for at least a few hours after polishing to eat away any polishing compound, skin oil, or anything that may prevent a good paint stick. Ill then clean the compound and impurities from the door jams, body lines, and grills with a pick and do a final wipedown with acetone again. Once the cleaning is done, you should never touch the surface again until its cleared on the final step. For instance Ill use gloves and place the car on my helping hands and they wont leave that until the clear is cured. Make sure the car is up to temp and warm again after cleaning with a liquid that will cool the body like acetone, alcohol, etc.. Spray your paint OVER AND UNDER the body (a lot of people miss this then encounter the paint chipping at the bottom). Once you're satisfied with the finish, you have two options: 1. Do your detail work and decals (if applicable) then do final clear OR 2. Clear the body, do detail work and decals, then clear again. Ive done the first option but maybe try the second on your first one and see how you like it. The clear is the only thing that protects the paint from chipping off, so definitely keep the car out of harms way and be VERY careful while handling. Hope this helps! 👊😁👍
You can try AutoZone or O'Riellys and use the Duplicolor 1K Clear as a backup. As for 2K Clear you'll most likely need to purchase online. Spraymax was my go-to for 2K but now Car Rep/Tropical Glitz is since it has no potlife unlike the SprayMax. 👊😁👍
Thanks for watching! I would not recommend using mineral spirits as it may leave a residue. I would use either acetone or rubbing alcolhol as those do not leave a residue and are highly evaporative. 😄👍
DAMM SUWEET 🙋♂️💪👊🙏 hey you throw overspray to the red real car on you spray booth room well you the garage I said amigo 😄😆 #master super sickk finish ☝️💪
Hey Richard, painting masks you should be able to find some N95 3M's at Lowes or Home Depot. If you want a full respirator, you should be able to find them and the cartridges on Grainger or maybe Amazon! For decals, there are quite a few here on YT who do custom decals. Maybe try Rodney at RD Custom Diecast, Bruce at Zollo Diecast, or Jim Silva? 🤔
All the cars look amazing. But that blue Porche looks amazing in the sunlight. That is a great tip on heating the spray can in hot water. Doesn't spraying in the garage mess up the floor or car parked in there?
Hey Fern, thanks for the compliment. It came out very good. Super happy with all of them! 😁 The spray is very thin and does not stick to the floor so no worries! 😁👊
Yup, correct. I dont wet sand or finish the clear. Ive found that even coverage is enough to result in a really good clear finish. Does that make sense?
@Honest Diecast gotta thank you! just attempted painting with duplicolor today....followed your steps and they look badass! now I gotta go hunt for more colors
Nice Rob! If you go to AutoZone, Napa, or O'Riellys you can grab a can and see if they can order more colors. I think Napa is the best bet, but if all else fails then Amazon has them as well! 👊😁👍
These look amazing! I’m trying out the method myself, hopefully I can achieve the same results 😅, I did also wanna ask, how long do you let your cars cure for? before detailing/ clearcoating etc… Also, what’s your process when applying the 2k clear coat?
2K is really straight forward, nice even coats just enough to cover from about a foot/foot and a half away. I usually let cure overnight though it can be sped up with a bit of heat. Hot dry sun for a few hours or about 185F for 10 min in the oven. 😁👍
Thanks for the video!! Maybe try it soon. Also, do you have any tips on how to drill strait into the car when trying to wheel swap them?? I can’t make a clean strait drill 😂😂 thanks for all the content
Thanks Sunnyboy! Its all eyes honestly, but the best way is to run your 3/32" in right down thr middle of the rivet as the pilot when you first start drilling. Go down as far as you can safely go, then use your big drill bit to snap the head off. I always try to prevent having to redrill once the rivet heads are snapped and the base is off. Sometimes Ill run the tap down the pilot before even taking the base off as well. Helps prevent the end of the post from mushrooming out and making the base a pain to snap back on. 😁👊
Thank you, Edward!!! So I've done it both ways and both work. I have done multiple light coats waiting 10 minutes between coats as directed and I have also shot fully only waiting a minute or two between coats. I find the second way to be a tad easier to distinguish the shade of color you want to achieve since dried paint under a fresh coat of transparent paint can be a bit deceiving at times. Either way, you definitely want LIGHT coats or you'll pile the paint on too thick and wont achieve that spectraflame appeal. 😁👊
Well brother I have seen better, just kidding lol. Those turn out absolutely gorgeous brother, I definitely need to get my hands on some of that paint and try it myself. That Chevy looked absolutely amazing, but I get it if it's not up to your standards then do it over. That is one of the greatest things about customizing, just toss it back in the stripper and start all over. Nicely done brother, those are beautiful.
Haha, OUCH!!! 🤣🤣 Thank you David, good to see you here! Yeah, I would highly recommend giving it a try! Lots of work involved if going for the polished look but so worth it! Hope to see you on the live in 15 min! 😁👊
If you cure the paint in the oven or in the sun (hot, dry climate) you can spray clear in as little as a few hours. Any other condition Id recommend letting it sit over night. 👊😉👍
Thanks Freedom! It holds on great but Id definitely recommend clear coating. If you polish the body, the paint does not have much to hold onto and youre spraying it very thin as-is. Best to get it sealed up and protected. The 2k clear is the best, the second stage hardener is NO JOKE. Ive dropped a car after 2k and it didnt phase it. 😁👊
@@gtrbray9817 it’s doing alright, right now I’ve been using my left hand to do all the prep work, buffing, stripping, my mom does the drilling since I’m not that coordinated with my left, basically have around 20 cars prepped for when I can start using my airbrush hand lol. Apparently whenever I fell down on it I hit a muscle which is why it’s sore and hard to use
Ryan Stone, please get better buddy! Sounds like you have a lot full of cars that need some love and are waiting for ya! Hope you found the vid useful and intuitive my friend! 😁👊
No primer Nismo! Its bare body under the paint thats why cleaning, coverage, and lack of contact are keys before after laying the paint. Always a good idea to clear immediately after the paint cured if you can! 😁👍
StriveX, the best possible way to study would be to watch customizers of all levels and watch their methods and materials they use. We all feed ideas off eachother, it's not a competition so there's plenty of knowledge sharing to ingest. Hope that helps! 👊😁👍
Hey Sanjay, glad you found the vid useful! If you want a spectraflame finish, you cannot prime as you are essentially putting a transparent candy paint on a bare metal body to get the look. If you clean the body very well and keep it clean then you will have no issues. My recommendation is to clean with alcohol or acetone, spray the metalcast, then apply clear coat/detail/clear again. 👊😁👍
@strivexgamein4210 Its a self healing cutting mat. I use it to cut styrene, tubing, and whatever else (also to measure styrene lengths). Clean up is a bit easier with it as well as opposed to a bare table top
My paint jobs keep pooling up in the corners… Does that mean I’m going to heavy?? It’s the only paint that does it for me and it’s costly at $20 a can.
No primer because thatll take away the "spectraflame" effect, thats why its crucial to clean the body well and prevent touching before clearcoat. You can also apply a few coats of clear after painting and detail ontop of the clear, then clear once more after details are added. 😁👍
Juan, the surface has to be absolutely clean with alcohol or acetone (don't touch it with bare hands after cleaning it). The body should be at least warm as well, Id say no less than 75F-80F. Lastly the weather, too cold or too humid might yield less than optimal results. 😁👍
You have to Brian, if not you will definitely scratch the paint or it will definitely begin to flake off overtime. The polished finish does not give the Metal Cast much to hang onto and the Metal Cast is an already thin paint being applied sparingly. 😁👍
Juan, the duplicolor metalcast is a transparent candy spray paint which allows you to see through the paint finish down to the bare metal of the car. Thats what gives it the "spectraflame/RLC" look. 👊😁👍
Thanks Jorge, I appreciate you buddy! Me personally, I don't have a problem with it and consider it more of a courtesy. If you hit a store and pull a super or a new premium set, or whatever that may be in high demand/highly sought after, its courtesy to let other people know you hit that store so they don't waste their time. Its also courtesy to let them know that theres some still there (if it is), so IMO I look at it as a courtesy but thats just my opinion. 😁👊
@@HonestDiecast no e case drop over here in my local targets at all, Mattel sends a lot of cases to targets but it takes them days or months to put them out , it is a drag
If you have adequate outdoor sun and temp, it can dry in probably 3-4hrs. If not, I would let it sit a day before doing anything. Make sure to try not to touch the paint until you clearcoat it. Use helping hands or something to hold it while you detail it! 😁👍
Gotta get some my friend. With any paint, ESPECIALLY the metalcast you MUST clearcoat if you want it to last. Its especially important with metalcast because you're spraying very thin to achieve the spectraflame look. Also, you are spraying onto a bare metal body that is very smooth so it'll have a tougher time having something to stick to. You can pick up some Duplicolor 1K clear from O'Riellys as well which is mh go-to for clearcoat usually. I prefer 2K clear but its pretty spendy and has a short shelf life once you crack the hardener. 😁👊
came back to let you know this technique holds up well. been having more fun thanks to you. 🤙

Acetone is highly flammable. A small spark will set it off. Would keep it and other flammables in a metal cabinet.
That's absolutely beautiful! This is the exact colour I want to do my 1993 Hot Wheels Shelby Cobra the teal blue that is
Thanks Airgun!
It's all about the clear coat you got to have it with metal cast paint the paint will just chip off unless clear coated properly.
Absolutely! The paint has virtually nothing to grab onto with a brushed or polished surface! 👊😁👍
It could be the paint has not cured yet or it could be humidity. 🤔
Thats it! 😁👊
Do you have a vid on how you polished it?
Right here boost! 👊😁👍

@@HonestDiecast Hello! work is just amazing! Can you please tell me what is the great track playing throughout the video?😊
Do you have a video on how to apply 2k clear coat?
Juan, its pretty easy. I can definitely make one though next time I apply it. 😉👍
Can't find that 2k clear coat video. Can't find these spray cans or clear coats locally. I guess i would have to go order online.
Wow sickk finish 😎🙏👌✌️
Thank you Efren! I hope you try it someday, my friend! 😁👊
@@HonestDiecast for sure 💪👌😎
Can I clean body with mineral spirits? Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! I would not recommend using mineral spirits as it may leave a residue. I would use either acetone or rubbing alcolhol as those do not leave a residue and are highly evaporative. 😄👍
dude ngl this looks better than spectraflame sick! 👍
Thank you Car Guy! Give it a try sometime! 😁👊❤

Do you know where I can get costume decals for the Hot Wheels Tacoma trd sport, and others, as well a painting masks??? Thanks
The spray is very thin and does not stick to the floor so no worries! 😁👊
Awesome video! Can’t wait to do a few custom vids as well! Those cars are looking suhweet!! 👍👊👊
Haha, thanks Brian! You should give the Metal Cast a try on a few! 😁👊
@@HonestDiecast Definitely will!!
not sure if you addressed it. but do you do any wet sanding or polishing after the clear coat?
I do not but some do. I find if the clear is applied right then you dont really need to. Just IMO 👊😁👍
@@HonestDiecast could you elaborate on that please? would i apply the clear the same way you demonstrated the paint application?
Yup, correct. I dont wet sand or finish the clear. Ive found that even coverage is enough to result in a really good clear finish. Does that make sense?
@Honest Diecast gotta thank you! just attempted painting with duplicolor today....followed your steps and they look badass! now I gotta go hunt for more colors
Nice Rob! If you go to AutoZone, Napa, or O'Riellys you can grab a can and see if they can order more colors. I think Napa is the best bet, but if all else fails then Amazon has them as well! 👊😁👍
What paint did you use to paint the yellow porche that was originally a flat yellow
Was it the 935 slant nose? IIRC it was Krylon Fusion "Sunbeam Yellow". 🤔👊
These look amazing! I’m trying out the method myself, hopefully I can achieve the same results 😅, I did also wanna ask, how long do you let your cars cure for? before detailing/ clearcoating etc…
Also, what’s your process when applying the 2k clear coat?
@@HonestDiecast Thanks, I’ll try that, but I have been super careful lately after I drilled strait through my Aventador 😂😂 Rip venti 😢
Haha, it happens buddy. Ive done it a few times as well. 😖😁👊
@@HonestDiecast Lol 😂
I subbed! Nice work!
Thanks Melkie! I appreciate you my friend! 😁👊🙏
How many coats of clear coat would you recommend for this kind of paint?
It depends on your spraying technique but 3-4 should work! 👊😁👍
@@HonestDiecast Thanks for the tip!
Where did you get the decals for the Porche?
Hey Cristian, are you talking about the red RWB? Those ones I believe were from Mod My Ride on Ebay. Im not sure if they're still have them.
Hey honest diecast those came out amazing! I have a quick question though, how long do I have to wait In between coats?
Thank you, Edward!!! So I've done it both ways and both work. I have done multiple light coats waiting 10 minutes between coats as directed and I have also shot fully only waiting a minute or two between coats. I find the second way to be a tad easier to distinguish the shade of color you want to achieve since dried paint under a fresh coat of transparent paint can be a bit deceiving at times. Either way, you definitely want LIGHT coats or you'll pile the paint on too thick and wont achieve that spectraflame appeal. 😁👊
@@HonestDiecast thank you so much! Keep up the good work🙏
Thanks Edward! 😁👊 Lemme know if you have anymore questions, always happy to help! 😁👍
Hey how did make that stand to hold the car ?
Its just a paper towel roll. I take a red disposable cup, cut slits in the bottom, and stick the paper towel roll into it. 😁👍
I spent $20 on the 2k for my first restoration and didn't know the can is for one time use. Is there a more efficient way to applicate the 2k???
Yeah you gotta use the can within 48hrs after you crack the hardener. Only other way is mix-on-demand with airbrush. 😞👊
@HonestDiecast Thank you for the inspiration! Do you think lightly spraying on a lacquer would come close as a substitute?
Surely worth a try! I know many use MinWax and other substitutes, I just prefer 1K and 2K. 😁👍
Does this only work with a specific kind of paint?
This works with any transparent candy paint, rattlecan or airbrush. 😁👍
How long do you keep the paint under hot water?
About 5 or 10 minutes will do it! 😁👍
Great video very helpful
Thank you my friend, btw I LOVE the channel name!!! Sub'd! 😁👊
@@HonestDiecast thanks man! I sub'd to you as well
How much should i wait before clear coat ?? And how many coats?
If you cure the paint in the oven or in the sun (hot, dry climate) you can spray clear in as little as a few hours. Any other condition Id recommend letting it sit over night. 👊😉👍
Very nice finish! Does the paint hold onto the polished casting alright? Did you have paint flaking off easily?
Thanks Freedom! It holds on great but Id definitely recommend clear coating. If you polish the body, the paint does not have much to hold onto and youre spraying it very thin as-is. Best to get it sealed up and protected. The 2k clear is the best, the second stage hardener is NO JOKE. Ive dropped a car after 2k and it didnt phase it. 😁👊
@@HonestDiecast Gotcha! Sounds good to me. I clear coat all of my cars anyway. 2K is the way to go. Thanks, brother!
Yes, 2K clear is INSANELY good and well worth the cost! Just sucks you only got 48hrs to use it once you crack it! 😖
@@HonestDiecast Gotta prep up enough castings to use it all up. ;)
Yeah, the only downside! You gotta have at least 8-10 castings ready to blow through a can. 😖
Cant wait to do this after my hand heals up after the nail incident.
Hope your hand get better I don’t know what I would do If I had to watch it and then not do it, get better!
I wonder if he airbrushed on the clear coat, AND, I wonder if he buffs the clear coat when dry?? Anyone know? Thanks!
Hey Charles, I only rattlecan at this time. If the clear is laid correctly, you wont need to wetsand or buff the clearcoat. 😉👍
again thank you sir
My pleasure lil truck! 👊😁👍
So just polish the car beforehand and heat the paint beforehand? Right?
Best regards from Germany
Yep, polish the car and clean the body off VERY well! Then heat and paint, dont touch the car once youve cleaned after polishing. 👊😁👍
love your videos
Thank you Yash! I appreciate you my friend! 😁👊❤
@@HonestDiecast thx
No primer needed? Is the paint mixed with primer?
No primer Nismo! Its bare body under the paint thats why cleaning, coverage, and lack of contact are keys before after laying the paint. Always a good idea to clear immediately after the paint cured if you can! 😁👍
Huh who knew that you could use a toilet paper roll to hold up the car to paint. I think i need to try that❤ love the porsche 993 gt2 in blue😁👊
Right? They're perfect Mr Hyde, and reusable.....oh free too after you use up the roll! Thank you buddy, the 993 came out really well! 😁👊❤
Can I use any paint I have at home?
For a spectra-look you'll want a transparent candy paint. If you're still using a rattle can, you'll want the Duplicolor MetalCast in the video. 😁👍
@@HonestDiecast thanks and where to get it because I’m in the uk and I can’t find it

what type of brush should i use to brush them
These are rattlecan paints so no brush necessary. 👊😁👍
Bro I like to study diecast customising how can I study this?
StriveX, the best possible way to study would be to watch customizers of all levels and watch their methods and materials they use. We all feed ideas off eachother, it's not a competition so there's plenty of knowledge sharing to ingest.
Hope that helps! 👊😁👍
@@HonestDiecast i will watch and try it thank you sir for the information
My pleasure! 👊😁👍
How come you don't prime the body before spray painting? Otherwise i learned a lot, thank you
Hey Sanjay, glad you found the vid useful! 👊😁👍
@@HonestDiecast Awesome, I'm going to buy some clear spray paint
@@sanjayvenkatesh4651 nice! I always recommend Spraymax 2K clear but a good alternative is Duplicolor 1K
May I know why everyone is using that matt on the table?colum and number? what is that?May I known the use of that?
@strivexgamein4210 Its a self healing cutting mat. I use it to cut styrene, tubing, and whatever else (also to measure styrene lengths). Clean up is a bit easier with it as well as opposed to a bare table top
@@HonestDiecast thank you I appreciate your help
@@HonestDiecast bro I mean that green one what is that?
Theres two cutting mats in the vid. A smaller black/orange one and the bigger Grey one underneath.
My paint jobs keep pooling up in the corners… Does that mean I’m going to heavy?? It’s the only paint that does it for me and it’s costly at $20 a can.
Yep, going a bit too heavy on those coats. With the metalcast you wanna go as light as possible while still being an even/uniform coat. 👊😁👍
why no primer? will it do paint chips because no primer?
No primer because thatll take away the "spectraflame" effect, thats why its crucial to clean the body well and prevent touching before clearcoat. You can also apply a few coats of clear after painting and detail ontop of the clear, then clear once more after details are added. 😁👍
thankyou, but is it guaranteed that it won't chipped off the paint once clear coat is applied?
Nothing is guaranteed my friend. But use caution and it'll come out just fine! 😁👍
thankyou sir, I'll follow you on your Instagram
No IG Walter, but we do have a FB Group. 😁👍
I tried to attempt this and the paint didn't stick. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Juan, the surface has to be absolutely clean with alcohol or acetone (don't touch it with bare hands after cleaning it). The body should be at least warm as well, Id say no less than 75F-80F. Lastly the weather, too cold or too humid might yield less than optimal results. 😁👍
@HonestDiecast oh OK so that was probably the problem I had touching it after I cleaned it.
@@HonestDiecast thanks so much for the feedback
Hello... No undercoat?
HELLO!!! NO! 😉
Great finish mybe not use a clearcoat
You have to Brian, if not you will definitely scratch the paint or it will definitely begin to flake off overtime. The polished finish does not give the Metal Cast much to hang onto and the Metal Cast is an already thin paint being applied sparingly. 😁👍
What happens if I use gloss spray paint?
Juan, the duplicolor metalcast is a transparent candy spray paint which allows you to see through the paint finish down to the bare metal of the car. Thats what gives it the "spectraflame/RLC" look. 👊😁👍
is this method safe? won't the can explode?
Of course. Why would the can explode? 🤔
Never thought of pitting a spry can under my tap, hmm
Best results that way my friend! 😁👊
Works great!
Absolutely Andres! 😁👊
nice video, i have a question derek, what do you think of sharing a hunting location with other collectors ?
Thanks Jorge, I appreciate you buddy! Me personally, I don't have a problem with it and consider it more of a courtesy. If you hit a store and pull a super or a new premium set, or whatever that may be in high demand/highly sought after, its courtesy to let other people know you hit that store so they don't waste their time. Its also courtesy to let them know that theres some still there (if it is), so IMO I look at it as a courtesy but thats just my opinion. 😁👊

No primer needed?
No primer Mark. Just clean the surface thoroughly with alcohol or acetone, spray, and dont touch the paint until you clear it. 😁👍
@@HonestDiecast thanks!!!
your shaking technique is so sik!
How long for it to dry?
If you have adequate outdoor sun and temp, it can dry in probably 3-4hrs. If not, I would let it sit a day before doing anything. Make sure to try not to touch the paint until you clearcoat it. Use helping hands or something to hold it while you detail it! 😁👍
@@HonestDiecast what if I don’t got clearcoat?
Gotta get some my friend. With any paint, ESPECIALLY the metalcast you MUST clearcoat if you want it to last. Its especially important with metalcast because you're spraying very thin to achieve the spectraflame look. Also, you are spraying onto a bare metal body that is very smooth so it'll have a tougher time having something to stick to. You can pick up some Duplicolor 1K clear from O'Riellys as well which is mh go-to for clearcoat usually. I prefer 2K clear but its pretty spendy and has a short shelf life once you crack the hardener. 😁👊
@@HonestDiecast appreciate it man! I almost started spraying without it but I’m gonna buy some today thanks😁
