Get rid of your Junk People

- Just finished cleaning out a shed over at mom's. Dad used it for his retirement knocking around place. Lots of stuff to haul away. Took a couple weeks to finish but had a lot of good memories doing it. Ended up dragging some stuff to the house I thought might be useful. Kind of ironic I dragged stuff home from what he dragged from somewhere else.
When I retired last month, I spent the next 2 weeks cleaning out all my files and records from my job, some were 20 years old!
We had to sell my MIL's house in December and she needed to move to assisted living, I took so many truck loads of the same type of junk you just moved and took to the dump. I came home and made sure I started getting rid of my junk, don;t want my kids having to do the same thing!
Been involved in a couple clean outs myself. I don't really mind but majority of what people keep means nothing to anybody else and most of it ends up at the dump. I try to keep the shed cleared out. Every spring and fall I give it a once over. Every little bit helps. Brought back lots of good times and memories. Thanks. Steve
Awesome Steve, so true getting rid of the junk around our place to since I retired, Soo true....by the way we just tried giving you thumbs up , it wouldn't let me?
It's something to think about that a lot don't. Nobody wants our junk except us for the most part. I've got the same problem. Cleaned out my shed earlier and dragged some things home from what he dragged home. Staying on top of it makes things a lot easier. No worries about the thumbs up, I don't pay much attention to analytics. Either here or the retirement channel. I started this one first but wanted to concentrate on retirement on a separate channel. Most people don't like to hear both at the same time. Thanks for watching. Steve
I have been telling my parents to get rid of their junk for years. They started doing it. I said I am not going to spend a ton of time going through things and cleaning out. I joke with them and say when they are gone, I am coming in with some gas and a lighter. hahah . But they do get it and have been getting rid of decades of accumulated stuff. Some they give to family members, some donated and the rest thrown away. For me I have a rule. 1 in 1 out. So if i get a new shirt or pants for say bday or christmas, I find one that I have not worn much or has some small holes, frays in them and away they go. Same with kitchen items. Someone gets me a mug or glassware, I pass one on or toss an older one. I am at equilibrium.
That's a great rule to follow. Sure keeps the clutter down. The weather is starting to turn down here so I'll get started on some of the junk I dragged home from their junk. That bench is first on the list. It's setup on the side of my shed where the bird feeder is. I didn't mind cleaning out but it was just unnecessary. Majority of it was pure junk. Except of course what I drug home.😄 Brought back a lot of good times and memories. Thanks. Steve
I really enjoyed this video and showing us around. I absolutely love to hear stories from the past and about their lives. You are very kind to help your mama. I want to hear more life stories!
Plan to branch out and do a little more of this type next year. They take a little more time and effort but I kind of enjoy it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Steve
That would be a good future video. What critters are in the shed!
Never got around to tearing it down. This fall or winter is the goal now. They had both skunks and groundhogs over the years burrow under it. Totally tore up the floor. Once I get to it I'll video it. Thanks. Steve
I had that same foot locker! I sure like that shed, should have built one when I was younger.
That smaller wooden one is really about to collapse. Plan to tear it down here in the near future and use what I can over at my place for odd jobs. The big metal one is great. They got that about 10-12 years ago. Got my weights in there I use 2-3 times a week. Gives me a few extra days to keep an eye on mom. Steve
It must be a bittersweet experience going through those items and throwing stuff away. It must have brought up a lot of memories. Good for you, helping your mom out.
It was but it's been almost a 3 yr. project to get to this point. So a lot more memories than anything else. Most of the usable things went to family, friends or just sold. Since the weather has cooled off I got on it. Had a lot of quality time sitting under that carport talking and tinkering together. Must be why I do the same now. Thanks. Steve
That GI Joe box is cool!❤
Yeah I think so also. As long as it didn't have a hole in it dad would keep it for something. Bolts, nails, golf balls etc. didn't matter he made use of it some way. Unfortunately I seem to have gotten that from him. It just gets to a point you need to toss stuff out. Thanks . Steve
Keep the videos coming
Will do. Try to do both the same day but sometimes I don't get a chance. Retirement has me busy.😄 Steve
Any bent nails! Good job Steve!
A few but I have enough of my own.😄 Thanks. Steve
🤘
Thanks. Steve
Giving the old Dodge a work out!
I'd say. Will be 3 total loads from here and I had one from my own shed. One thing is sure I'm not a minimalist. Kind of runs in the family.😄 Thanks. Steve
Wow mama has a huge yard
Kind of misleading. They have a half acre like me but, there is a field behind them. It's grown up now but used to ride dirt bike, fly kites and play some baseball back there as a kid. About 10ft on the back of that little shed is the property line. We even had a garden back there a couple years. Thanks. Steve
