    Bonjour Antoine and Colleen. We were in Paris . Tired after walking all day. Decided to eat in our room and have a picnic. We went to the supermarket. A baguette, some cheese with some help from the resident expert en fromage and a bottle of rose. C’est magnifique 😊

    French American here. Maybe I know too much about wine, but here are my comments:
    a) For rose, beyond the Cotes de Provence, I would strongly recommend Bandol (mourvedre based rose) a distinct appellation of Provence, and Tavel (grenache and cinsault based) which makes very elegant roses in the Southern Rhone.
    b) For Champagne, the key decision to make is what type of grape variety you want it
    made of (the other decision is how much sugar, but there is little debate-- you should always select brut or ultra brut which have much lower sugar than sec or demi-sec which are awful sugary wines). The 3 choices are chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier. Of course most champagnes are a blend if these 3. Blanc de blanc is 100% chardonnay. It yields a very elegant but a bit austere champagne. I grew up in Reims in the 1960s, and I would say that at the time the local elites were strongly leaning towards blanc de blanc. Champagne rose is pinot noir based. It is more fun and fruity. My observation is that this fits best the American taste (although French tastes have evolved). Finally pinot meunier yields a very substantial and heavier style of champagne, which I do enjoy a lot.
    c) For the Loire Valley, you mentioned Sancerre (sauvignon blanc wine), but in my opinion the great white wine of the Loire Valley is Vouvray/Savennieres which is chenin blanc based. Chenin blanc is a wonderful grape which combines sweetness with great acidity. Among the Loire reds, I would rank Chinon (cabernet franc based) as the most interesting.
    d) For Bordeaux, the key delineation is right bank vs left bank. Right bank is primarily merlot and cabernet franc based and includes Saint Emilion and Pomerol. These wines are more round and fun to drink. Incidentally, Fronsac that you mentioned as a lower cost option is a right bank AOC, which is next to Saint Emilion and produces Saint-Emilion like wines. Left bank Bordeaux are cabernet based with some merlot. The style is more powerful, with more backbone than on the left bank. These wines are meant to be kept for a while. Many of the more famous appelations like Margaux, Pauillac, Saint Estephe are on the right bank.
    e) Finally, for Bourgogne, you mentioned Pouilly Fuisse as an alternative to more pricy
    Bourgogne blancs. It tends to be more fruity, but sometimes a bit flabby. It is to the South of the main Bourgogne area. Personally, I would go North instead, to Chablis, which produces a bone dry very mineral style of chardonnay wine.
    As many have mentioned, there is also the Rhone valley. In the North this is where the greatest syrahs in the world are produced in Cote Rotie, Hermitage and Cornas, as well
    as viognier in Condrieu, whereas in the South you have Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras, which produce grenache based wines with some percentage of syrah and mourvedre. Alsace, home of Riesling, Gewurtzraminer, and Pinot Gris (much motre elegant than Pinot Grigio from Italy). There is also Beaujolais, Languedoc, Cahors, Madiran, Corsica ...

      Thank you. 😂 From a fellow wine nerd, and wine scholar. While I also was biting my tongue, my biggest takeaway was that, contrary to popular belief, retail wine of good to very good quality in all AOC's and categories is MUCH much cheaper than our own tax laden Canadian imported bottles at twice or even three times the price for same. 😢

      @@typhilips8122 Based on my recent stays in France, I completely agree that wine in the US and Canada is very expensive compared to French wine of comparable quality. Roughly speaking French wines costs half as much as comparable California or Oregon wines. In France I can drink very well at15 Euros per bottle, compared to 30$ in California.

    My wife and I just returned to the states after our first ever Paris trip last week. Thank you so much for your videos, you helped make our first trip to Paris extra memorable. We tried Bo & Mie and the food was incredible! We walked the Jardin des Tuileries, did the Batobus, dodged the fake survey takers you warned about, and knew exactly where to go at CDG to get our official taxi. we tried Angelina’s and we agree with you that the hot chocolate was not the best we had. It was just “ok”. We kept saying “les frenchies were right!” We loved Cafe le Carrousel by the Louvre, their hot chocolate was phenomenal.

    I must say I really enjoy your down to earth advice about everything French. I have been to my second home France, since the tender age of five. Especially le midi , so rose wines came natural. Like many natives I just want a decent wine for a good price, and like my French family something that goes well with the food we eat.
    Your non nonsense approach and good advice is so easy to take at heart.
    And it's not just about wine. It's about just about everything you may encounter when in France.
    I'm not very familiar with Paris , I've only been visiting, lots of times but as a visitor. Your advice I find invaluable, especially where to eat and what to avoid.
    Thank you for doing a great job! I know you aim at Americans especially, but what you do is helpful for everybody! 👏👏👏🤗🇸🇪

    Nice instructional video, thanks both! I think it's important to say that 40 euros goes a lot further in a store or a wine bar than at a restaurant. Restaurants usually mark up their wines by 3-4x because people usually make their choice of restaurant based on the food and its price. So that wine you buy in the store at 40€ is going to be 100€ at least in a restaurant. Conversely, a 40€ bottle in a restaurant is going to be one you can buy for 10-15€ at a wine store or a supermarket.

    Great, basic info. In the 80's we were young, upcoming professionals who learned about pouilly fuisse or beaujolais or pinot blanc, etc. and thought we were quite sophisticated...😂😂😂. Actually they were all good wines and we still drink them occasionally. Colleen's newly- acquired wine knowledge is impressive 👏 and quite simple in its outline. The people side show was also impressive...tickle lady, Vincent (always spot on with his suggestions) and the professor with his scarf and lastly John Wayne, aka Antoine. 😁 More to come...I hope!

    Well, you did a reasonably good job of helping folks who do not know French wines to not be intimidated. And this is key. If one has no experiencer with French wines, this was a good start. My comments are that Burgundies are some of the most expensive French wines. They are superb, but if you don't know your stuff, I'd shy away from them. There are multiple vineyards in this region and it is very easy to suckered into something that you will not enjoy. Secondly, I was surprised that you did not mention the wines from Côtes du Rhône, These are my favorites and they are very affordable. I agree with your assessment of rose. Anything other than French rose is crap. Ditto for champagne. I love champagne. It is especially appropriate for pre dinner with appetizers. Great with deserts too, but I like it best before a meal. Kudos to you both!

    • @sophiebrissaud927
      @sophiebrissaud927 6 місяців тому

      I agree with you about Burgundies but only on the reds. It is not so true of the whites, also expensive but better value and less bad surprises. For red wines, I also recommend Côtes-du-Rhône, Bordeaux, Auvergne or Languedoc.

    If you have a lower budget, you can check any supermarket in France, you will get a large selection of wine for under 10€ a bottle, and still get quality wine bottle from Bordeaux, Burgundy and even Cote de Provence. And if you are in France in September, you have a "Foire aux Vins" which make wine bottle even cheaper. You can get really enjoyable wine cheap here since it's produced locally. Yes, it won't be the best wine ever made but still very very good. Most french people will buy these bottle for themselves or go to a special seller like Nicholas for maybe higher quality wine to bring at a dinner they are invited to.
    Another tip for the french culture enjoyer, if you are invited to a dinner, ask what type of meal there will be (fish, red meat, white meat or even vegetarian) and buy accordingly thanks to Les Frenchies video.
    Allez, on y va !

    Okay, these suggestions are excellent but for more variety try these too;
    Loire Valley, forget Sauviginon Blanc try Chenin Blanc in its various AOC’s especially Vouvray. Ages magnificently but drinks well young too. Not expensive.
    Pouilly Fuisse are often over oaked, try Macon, Macon Villages instead.
    My favourite burgundy white is Chablis either oaked or preferably un oaked Drinks well early in a hot vintage. Ages beautifully.
    My favourite domaine is Gilbert Picq.
    Red burgundy: Try Nuit Saint Georges, it’s always underrated or Hautes Cotes des Nuits.
    Bordeaux: Saint Emillion is always safe.
    Wines from Alsace are wonderful, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris. And Gewurztraminer ❤
    And lots of great wines from the Rhone; Cote Rotie for reds and Condrieu for whites.

    Okay Antoine, what do you really think about Bud Light and Coors Light? 😂😂.
    For Rosé I think nothing beats a bottle of Bandol. And I fully agree with your choice of Ayala for Champagne! Although if somebody shows up with a bottle of Krug, I’m there!
    Great video you guys!

    L'été j'ai une préférence pour le "Bordeaux Clairet" de Quinsac pour les grillades, charcuterie, apéro ... bien frais, c'est excellent. Je pense qu'il vous manque une autre région de France pour le vin qui est l'Alsace : Riesling, Gewurzt.., Sylvaner, Pinot ... (tous les vins des vendanges tardives) ... goûtez les vous ne serez pas déçus ! Un grand merci pour votre vidéo et surtout pour votre bonne humeur.

    You didn't do the great Côtes du Rhône dark red wines, blending Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Counoise!
    With their heady scents of rich spices, tasting of dark chocolate, ripe cherry, and the opulent richness of framboises noires...
    Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape is ~90€ is very good.
    Domaine des Gravennes is very drinkable at ~12€.
    But if you want to splurge, Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage, is the ticket at ~500€

    Maybe this following tip could be useful when buying a red wine bottle in a supermarket or minimarket in France when you're a dummy. 1) Select a wine coming from a french sunny region (côtes du Rhône, Corbières, Languedoc). 2) Prefer a not so old wine (max 5 years). 3) Look on the tap : avoid "négociant", prefer "récoltant" (it means that the dude who bottled the wine was the one to grow the grapes). Doing that, normally, you'll get a more than correct wine, even with cheap prices. Of course, Alsace, Bourgogne and Bordeaux regions give so great wines, but you need a little more knowledge to choose. For dry white wines, a good guarantee to get a very correct wine is to prefer Gamay variety, from the Loire region.

    As an Aussie, I really appreciate a good French rosé, because it’s a perfect refreshing drink for our hot weather and compliments seafood and other light dishes. And I find that French rosé is drier and more delicate, which suits my taste.
    I don’t think you mentioned Beaujolais, another chilled summer choice that I really appreciate. Is Beaujolais considered a quality French wine, or just a mediocre tourist tipple?

    • @Msbeefierce
      @Msbeefierce 6 місяців тому +1

      Yes beaujolais nouveau IS in fact a tourist bait, but even french drink it. It IS not the best wine, because it IS 'nouveau', it means they made of first grapes and they do not have Time to have enough Sun. Plus, the fermentation is way too fast . You would prefer a st Émilion. Im french by the way but i think you figured out because of my english 😂
