Making a Mini Desert Oasis for The Red Shrimp

- I thought it would be fun to take concept or essence of a desert oasis and shrink it down to a tiny size. Using various items that fit the theme, I created something that I think does exactly that. As you know, I typically do jungle style tanks, so it's always fun do something a little different, like this.

I thought it would be a lot of fun to take the concept/essence of a desert oasis and shrink it down into a mini setup. I had a lot more fun with this project than I expected, and I love the result. What do you think, though? Let me know, and have a great Sunday SerpaSquad!

Yes absolutely please do! We will be awaiting the video anxiously!
I got really excited when I saw the thumbnail 🙂 For about 6/7 years I have some cacti and succulents growing in a cheap discarded fish tank. Just some big stones at the bottom for drainage, some soil and white sand, couple of smaller stones and a wooden cover to prevent my cat from doing stupid things. Didn't really know what I was doing at the time so every time I check it I'm still surprised to see how well everything is growing. Got in a couple of cacti grown from seeds that are now about 20 cm in height. Have to start thinking about a version 2 now.
Edit: forgot to tell you I wouldn't mind more of these builds 🙂
Super cool! I love how much attention to detail and effort you put into all of your builds!! I haven't seen a single one of your videos I didn't like!! If you're looking for more inspiration on Desert Ecosystems, Dr. Plants did a really good job on a desert ecosystem I think you'd be interested in!!
I think this was an awesome build, all the design elements really came together. I really hope you think about doing this in a large scale tank, like four foot or more. It would be epic!
Oasis are one of some the coolest things in nature
Definitely Maybe
definitely.
So cool and unique.
Life is one to
Figuratively and literally
I'm an absolute desert rat, and not enough people appreciate how incredible and full of life the desert is. What I'm saying is that I am obsessed with this build 😍
I’m amazed that a rat learned how to type on a keyboard!
Wow, this is really amazing. This is near the top of the list of favorite builds that you've done. Let's be real, they're all my favorites but this one just speaks to me a little more.
Haha I gotchu! Glad you enjoyed it.
I 1000 percent agree!!
Me to
I know you weren’t able to include the dinosaur plant but I thought it was interesting how it still opened up after years.
does the green flag mean anything? (im not american so i dont know if changing the colours has any significance)
Bro making a project like this every week is insane, mad respect for your dedication🔥
wtf is your username "@totallynotazoophile"
This is just so sick man, I’m a young carpenter from QLD Australia and I dream of building environments like this one day for my reptiles on a much larger scale. Although my work is much rougher than yours, I think it’ll take a while to achieve your patience level! I just love to watch these videos
The only thing I think that could have exemplified desert "more" is possibly a seasonal setup with triops and fairy shrimp, because this is AMAZING
Wow! The bright red colors of the shrimp really brought it all together, I can't wait to see it when there are more shrimps.
Wow, This video showed lots of things about the oasis. from this video, I have learned that an oasis is an area made fertile by a source of fresh water in an otherwise dry and arid region. Oases (more than one oasis) are irrigated by natural springs or other underground water sources. They vary in size from a cluster of date palms around a well or a spring to a city and its irrigated cropland. Dates, cotton, olives, figs, citrus fruits, wheat, and corn (maize) are common oasis crops.Underground water sources called aquifers supply most oases. In some cases, a natural spring brings the underground water to the surface. At other oases, manmade wells tap the aquifer. In some oasis settlements, these wells might be centuries old and might have been diligently maintained for generations to preserve access to their life-giving water.Sands blown by desert winds threaten wells as well as agricultural areas in oases. Sand can destroy crops and pollute water. Communities have traditionally planted strong trees, such as palms, around the perimeter of oases to keep the desert sands from their delicate crops and water. Some of the world's largest supplies of underground water exist beneath the Sahara Desert, supporting about 90 major oases there. The Sahara is the largest desert on Earth-about the size of the continental United States. Though there are many oases there, traveling between them can take days because the desert is so vast. For this reason, oases in the Sahara and throughout the world have become important stops along trade routes. Merchants and traders who travel along these routes must stop at oases to replenish food and water supplies. This means that whoever controls an oasis also controls the trade along the route-making oases desirable to political, economic, and military leaders.Al-Hasa, Saudi Arabia, has been an important farming area for the Arabian Peninsula for thousands of years. Today, it continues to be a leading agricultural region, producing dates, rice, corn, sheep, cattle, and eggs. The al-Hasa region also lies above one of the richest oil fields in the world, making the oasis an important center of international trade.Rivers that flow through some deserts provide permanent sources of water for large, elongated oases. The fertile Nile River valley and delta in Egypt, supplied with water from the Nile River, is an example of this type of large oasis. At 22,000 square kilometers, it might be the largest oasis in the world.
I wasn't sure at first at the tall versus wide choice of tanks for this, but your Mini Desert Oasis build worked out wonderfully, nicely balanced and geometrically striking. The layout of the choya wood and pagoda stones just perfect, and red shrimp shows a nice contrast.
YESS SHRIMPPPP
I don’t know why but I’m such a SIMP for SHRIMP heheheh so thank you for this awesome as always work!!
Can't deny that they're just interesting! I love watching them graze with their little grabby hands.
@@SerpaDesign Me too! They’re just so cute and come in all colors of the rainbow and more, how could one not like them hahah
I'd be interested to see a desert tank that simulates the Australian outback, where conditions are dry and almost lifeless for most of the year. However, during the wet summer, receive copious amounts of rain that could spring the rank to life for a short period each year.
Check out "Simulating a Desert for 100 Days" by Dr Plant, it's a similar concept to that tho not Australian specific
That's kinda what I did for my community tank. It's not perfect but my tank gives off the vibe of a desert or beach. Depends on how you perceive it
Serpa sundays are the best 🙌🏽 thank you for taking such good care of the animals. It makes me feel so good that they are loved and thriving
This is one of the more simple builds compared to some of the stuff you’ve done before, yet this may be my favorite one yet. The hard scape looks incredible and those cacti/succulents in the back make it a perfect match
I love the gravel transition between tank and base. Very sleek!
I really liked this build! I'm personally glad you didn't put fish in the tank. I think the minimal movement and the "smallness" of the design really work well together. Very beautiful!
I would love to see you do as many biomes as possible! This is a great start to a desert biome tank! You already have the jungle biomes down.
Love it so much though! Just needs triops!
My day is better now that there has been a serpa design post! Thank you Tanner!!!!
I built my first tank for my new leopard gecko and really happy with how it turned out. Thank you for your educational and entertaining videos!
Awesome, glad to hear it!
I love seeing how all the techniques you’ve perfected over the years come together into one piece. Skill really is just trial and error, and practice. We can all become good at the things we want to do if we put in the time and energy.
Oasis are one of some the coolest things in nature. Oasis are one of some the coolest things in nature.
Keep up the good work your inspiring me to follow what you do
I think this is one of my favorite aquarium/terrarium designs of all time! I love the contrast of dessert and water and it looks so cohesive and cool with the red sand. An absolute homerun of a build 🤩👍
You’re the reason I started making terrariums about a year ago. I discovered you about a year and a half ago, binged all of your video’s & now I catch myself buying different glass containers at thrift shops, anything uniquely shaped, picking up random sticks/ rocks and always scoping for places with a bunch of moss. I have so many random things with a different idea attached to them in my craft room. I have a tall fish tank I plan on going full serpa on one day when I feel like I’ve gained more skills and knowledge but for now my little glass jars & containers will do. Thank you for giving me a new hobby / art to explore 🩵
That's awesome! There's no doubt that it ends up becoming a lifestyle 😅
Peaceful and attractive on its own, but the little red shrimps give the scene a livelier personality.
Beautiful oasis!! I really love how active this waterfall is!
What a fun design! I live in Southern Arizona, and it feels like you captured monsoon season and the dry summer season simultaneously!
I really liked this one. Looks great. I always enjoy the aquatic builds.
Also, it'd be cool to get a little longer montages of the completed project. These things are works of art - looking at & examining them is so cool & I would imagine relaxing for a lot of us.
AWSOME channel man! Living art. Amazing!

I have encountered natural springs in the Sonoran Desert (which is part of the native range for a lot of cholla cactus species, where we get cholla wood from). The one I liked visiting the most was shaded with mesquite trees and was the only place where I saw green grasses and mosses during 119F heat waves. The springs were covered in algae and mosses. There actually weren't a whole lot of cactuses near the streams, like because their roots couldn't take the level of moisture. That being said, this was still a neat build!
The contrast of water and desert is superb. Your concept and execution are truly masterful. I’m not overly impressed with shrimp, in general, but they really compliment this build.
Your creativity is limitless, I would have run out of ideas but you just continue to do more and more amazing work.
That was magical! They all look so seamless despite being divided to ensure all the different plants's health! Amazing!
Have not had many vids pop up in my feed lately. As a transplant to Arizona, I really liked this build. Well done!
One of the most original builds I've seen you do, arid up top and wet below. This is stunning!
your videos are as calming as they are informative. thank you.
Thank you for pronouncing Cholla properly! I learned how when I lived in Arizona...and I have been correcting people ever since!
LOVE this one & the Cherry Shrimps are gorgeous. Definitely a win.
Shrimp in the desert sounds cool.
I really like plants with arid vibes and this seems more achievable for someone like me, thanks for the inspiration!
Oasis are one of some the coolest things in nature. I love the gravel transition between tank and base. Very sleek!.
Yup. Been watching you for years and this is my favourite build so far. STUNNING.
Would LOVE to see a large, native Arizona desert build. Everything in it exactly as you would get in the wild.
always love a tank with a tray.
I feel the tray improves the look of the tank
I just love a good desert feel and look. This is a great one.
I love this! I imagine it's quite refreshing to go with a completely different design than you normally do.
Ahhh... A new favorite for me! It's awesome!!! Well done, Sir.
Another great build. I enjoy watching your videos on the weekends. So relaxing.
You really went encapsulated your vision perfectly. This might even be my new favorite 😍 so serene & beautiful 🦐 🐌 🌵 🪨 🪵 💧
Looks beautiful. What I envision when I think of Oasis is this project right here. Great job Tanner.
I love this whole build. I hope that dinosaur plant, which is very cool, gets used soon.
It’s absolutely beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
I ADORE this build. There is something magical about oasises. I think it is due to there being so much life in and around the water in an otherwise much more lifeless place. It screams hope to me.
One of my favorite design/builds yet!
So beautiful, looks fantastic!
Keep up the good work mate!
Perfectly captured what I imagine when I here oasis. Absolutely beautiful. ❤
This turned out phenomenal.
Tanner, that's one of your best builds, I totally love it!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Probably my favorite build of yours, the red shrimp look great in their new home!
All the terrariums you have made are beautiful and it’s just so inspiring
Deserts sometimes have Triops in the places that fill with water after a rain. Those would also look cool in there.
In my opinion, one of the most relaxing thing you've made.
And yet another fine build.
The out come is beautiful! Great work👍
Watching your videos is so peaceful and calming!
I always come back yo your videos, They have such a relaxing effect whilst learning how you make your Terrariums!
Amazing energy to you and to flow. Unlimited. Love it
He has done it again, another inspirational design.
Every time I think I am getting ok at terrarium design...great work Tanner. You dunnit again ✌
You are truly a master of your craft. Thank you for sharing your concept, build process and appreciation for nature.
Absolutely stunning!
Longer videos please!! Need more serpa!
This is probably my favorite build! Amazing
The waterfall sounded really nice
Really great! Love this kinda concept. I think you made an oasis for people to enjoy. I love seeing your projects come together. Your ideas being fulfilled. Awesome! God bless you and have a peaceful day by your oasis. 🏝️
Tanner just operates on a whole other level! Simply amazing!
gorgeous design. thanks for uploading
Thank you for giving me a hobby im interestwd in finally, i love animals and the idea of habitat building but i live with my mom who hates exotic animals so i cant, but this is something we are both happy with and your videos are helpling me escape my depression rn. Thank you so much
Each time you do something like this I think this is my favorite then you top it with the next one.
Thanks for sharing! Looks awesome!
Its stunning ❤ love the shrimpies 😊
I’ve loved all your builds but your professionalism and skill are reaching a new level. So cool to watch.
It’s incredible how you come up with such creative ideas ! It’s beautiful Tanner! 🌸💚🙃
As a shrimp lover I am so happy, that you gave them so much love with this amazing space ✨😍
I was thinking it needs to be bigger, but having seen it completed. It's actually really neat as like a window into an Oasis
After watching this channel for quite some time now I can confidently say that this man is allergic to bad builds.
Serpa builds are some of my favorite notifications. I've been looking into landscaping biology and architecture so these videos are great examples for me to build upon and create a portfolio for when I apply! Thanks so much man, keep it up.
Frickin. Gorgeous. Love it.
love the vids, keep of the great work!
I have a 16 gallon tank just like this one haven’t used it bought 2 when Petco had there tanks 50% off didn’t know what to do with it now you have given me an idea love this desert concept I can put it in the hallway next to my Bearded dragons room hopefully the 16 gallon will work for this at one point I stopped doing my dyi projects due to mental health illness & anxiety due to my chronic pains from my fibromyalgia sometimes it’s a battle thankfully I found your channel now you have inspired me to do what I si much love to do DYI projects working with power tools & getting my hands dirty 😅 when I’m at that I forget about everything + I have most of the materials collecting dust now I just need to get some cedar wood and plants thanks to you little by little I have been able to redo my 75 gallon tank + my other enclosure thanks for this idea you have shared with us your channel is so so inspiring. 🙏🏼
Beautiful as always!
I love the shrimp, planning on getting some soon for a large vase build.
You really outdid yourself with this one. Absolutely beautiful oasis scape.
Wow, it’s so beautiful and unique.
Absolutely breathtaking 😍 The contrasts are fantastically tied together with that red desert sand . The cacti looked amazing and I can honestly say that I have never seen a build like this anywhere. That pagoda stone is stunning. Outstanding work Tanner 👏 👌 💚
Just when I think you can possibly out do yourself.. you create an oasis! Incredible! You are amazing!❤👏💕
It looks so good! And it’s kinda different from what you normally do too which is a nice change of pace
The funnel n tube works well to add cap sand to an existing tank as well. I’m in Arizona. Seasonal creeks here could very well have cacti nearby. Fairy shrimp and tiny horseshoe crabs pop up in them.
That’s so beautiful! I’m in love
Spectacular build as usual! And so inspiring!!!
I need to think of other things to say, as I keep saying, "Wow, that's fantastic!" when I see your new videos!!! 😂
Seriously, though, Tanner, your videos make my face ache from smiling; you, sir, are a genius!!!
