"Eve's Bayou" is a terribly underrated movie and it being Ebert's #1 movie of 1997 makes me happy. I will forever be grateful to our feminist theories class professor for showing "Eve's Bayou" to our class. I always remember that time fondly. That particular building where we had our class had this huge magnolia tree growing right in front of it. I remember we had lively discussions about this and many other books, movies, and songs with the fragrance of magnolia wafting in through the windows.
Love to come back to S & E for these lists: My personal Top 10 from 1997: 10. Private Parts 9. Contact 8. Jackie Brown 7. Chasing Amy 6. Princess Mononoke 5. Boogie Nights 4. As Good As It Gets 3. Life Is Beautiful 2. Titanic 1. Good Will Hunting
Someone just made a video about _The Fifth Element_ starring Bruce Willis and Chris Tucker, calling it a classic. Nearly all of the early and current comments said it was a great movie and one of their favorite sci-fi. It doesn't make my top ten list of sci-fi movies. All action or jokes, nothing to think about. I am interested in seeing the review by Siskel & Ebert, but don't see it uploaded.
I loved Jackie Brown & The Ice Storm. Boogie nights, too. Jackie Brown is probably my favorite QT film. I saw them all in the theater, I even read the script for Boogie Nights a year before I saw the film and the film blew me away! Great stuff!!
I didn't realize the Invasion of Grenada was just two days after the bombing of the Marines barracks in Lebanon. Doesn't it take awhile to set up something like that? Anyway _Wag the Dog_ hurt the Clinton foreign policy more than the book/movie _Primary Colors,_ supposedly about his campaign and womanizing, because the press had "Wag the Dog" on its lips whenever military action was mentioned.
My List: 10- titanic 9- Jackie brown 8- wag the dog 7- L.A. confidential 6. G.I Jane 5. Good will hunting 4. Contact (1997 film) 3. Boogie nights 2. The conspiracy theory 1. My favorite movie staring Kurt Russell: breakdown (1997 film). I gave breakdown 5 stars.
Props including Starship Troopers on your list. Classic Verhoeven film in the same vain as Robocop only more epic. From what I remember that I saw, for the ‘97 year my two faves would have to be Boogie Nights and The Sweet Hereafter.
My list 1. Titanic 2. L.A. Confidential 3. Good Will Hunting 4. The Ice Storm 5. As Good As It Gets 6. In The Company Of Men 7. Boogie Nights 8. Ulee's Gold 9. Austin Powers 10. Men In Black / Contact
In no particular order: 1. Boogie Nights; 2. LA Confidential; 3. Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes); 4. Starship Troopers; 5. Jackie Brown; 6. Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil; 7. Hana-Bi (Fireworks); 8. Kundun; 9. The Sweet Hereafter; 10. Contact
They often try to 'promote' lesser seen and lesser known films onto their best of lists, so I find it interesting that they couldn't deny the likes of Titantic, LA Confidential, Good Will Hunting, and more from that year.
It might seem obvious Titanic won best director & picture but I believe now days it wouldn’t have. Oscar would have chosen a tiny film. I can prove it: the last big budget movie to win was 2003’s LOTR: ROTK
its nothing cool or original to insult Titanic, but it was such a huge film, it has so much buzz so much praise so much success. but when i finally saw it i was completely underwhelmed. i guess i just straight up did not like the characters. i thought the Billy Zane character was just lame and unlikable, but i hated HATED Dicapreos character. the entire film one minute they would be trying to portray him as this really smart streetwise guy then the next scene he would be this completely innocent childlike aww shucks moron. i could not stand him, in fact the film pretty much made me stop liking Leonardo at all. i was actually a pretty big fan of Dicaprio in a lot of his early roles, i really liked "This Boys Life" and he was in a few tv shows i liked really early on. but i hated his chaacter in Titanic and that would have been fine, but unfortunately Titanic was such a huge film and made him such a huge over night star that i started hearing all sorts of stuff about his private life that i hadnt known about before, and i just ended up thinking he is kind of a douchbag and i still dont like him. now he irritates me even more because he is a huge A list leading man star and he cant even be bothered to keep his ass in some sort of semi decent shape. he gets to live the sort of life most of us dream we could live and he gets paid millions for starring in one film and for being a draw that women like and he cant even be bothered to do a few crunches or something. it may seem petty of me but it really irritates me, Travolta bugged me for the same reason.
DiCaprio's baby face and adolescent voice really detracted from Titanic. Never found Leo (or Brad Pitt, for that matter) to have gravitas needed to pull off mature roles. Zane was good in Dead Calm, but gives me the creeps in everything else
Both are accurate films that depict the sinking of the Titanic. You can only do that tragedy so many times before things start to overlap with other versions.
@@linkbiff1054 I am speaking of storytelling ability and sense of drama. A Night to Remember is a disruption of order, society collapsing due to overwhelming circumstances. Titanic was a dumb Romeo and Juliet Romance.

All excellent! 🤘
I agree.
Every episode a passive-aggressive masterpiece
The Ice Storm is one of my favorite movies another is Wonder Boys.
What I remember most about Icestorm is Elijah Wood's death and how Lolita Christini Ricci was.
Wonder boys was a great film, but it didn't come out in 1997.
@@TheNameisPlissken1981 I did not say Wonder Boys came out in 1997. I just said I liked it.
Wag the Dog was my personal favorite of that year 👍😆

So many great films that year.
My list: 10-boogie nights, 9-Starship Troopers, 8-Romy & Michelle's high School reunion, 7-Jackie Brown, 6-G.I. Jane, 5-Cop Land, 4-Gattaca, 3-L.A. Confidential, 2-Titanic, 1-Contact.
Gattaca for sure, Contact too. Starship Troopers is always entertaining.

_Starship Troopers_ made their worst list. It was a pro-war movie twisting _All Quiet on the Western Front,_ an anti-war film.
My list
1. Titanic
2. L.A. Confidential
3. Good Will Hunting
4. The Ice Storm
5. As Good As It Gets
6. In The Company Of Men
7. Boogie Nights
8. Ulee's Gold
9. Austin Powers
10. Men In Black / Contact
R.I.P. Burt Reynolds and Ian Holm.
Also everyone else who used to be alive but now isn’t

Based on the comments and this video, perhaps I'll give Jackie Brown another try.

That intro...
Titanic blows!
I’m surprised neither of them included Scream 2, both seemed so enthusiastic in their initial reviews
They both gave it only 3 stars
My mom Lo pop pop pmoo😅

I read your review in Roger Ebert's voice haha.

@@shombie2737 I agree about Leo, not Pitt who really should do more comedic roles.
leo and winslet were both terribly miscast.
Titanic is nothing more than a poor version of A Night to Remember.

Gene was absolutely wrong about Boogie Nights.
