I'm watching this in April of 2022 and, '97 had some great films! It really makes me kinda happy that Siskel and Ebert aren't around to see where Hollywood is today.

Dark but true. 1997 was an absolute bumper year for movies-probably the best since 1957. 1977 was quite good as well lol. 2017 was a comparative letdown. Talk about an unfortunately combo-breaker.

In 1997, unlike other years, I was lucky to live in walking distance to some movie theaters, so I saw quite a lot of these. I loved the Full Monty and LA Confidential and went to see both twice. Russell Crowe was just a little known actor at the time, and the latter film made me an instant fan. I think I saw Titanic only once in the theater, but I enjoyed that as well and immediately went out to get the soundtrack. Other films I saw in the theater and liked that year were In and Out, Air Force One, Men In Black, GI Jane, and Tomorrow Never Dies.

I really miss these two guys. I miss the days of watching them before the internet when you would still read movie reviews by critics and I would buy Ebert's and Leonard Maltins movie review books almost every year. I miss going to Blockbuster to pick out a movie to watch on the weekends or to a big film on opening weekend.
Now that we have the internet and all of these streaming services for entertainment I can't imagine not having it but I can say this late 90s time period was a much better time period for the USA and our culture.
Siskel and Ebert were pure class. The fact that they would dress up in tuxedos for their best of lists is awesome. I didn't always agree with them...I probably agreed with Roger more than Gene but I was always interested to hear what they had to say about the new movies.
Very sad to know Gene only had less than two years to live at this point but didn't know it here obviously.
Sad Roger had a lot of health problems and died relatively young as well.
He was the best writer of all of the movie critics IMO and was a big influence on me.
To anyone who wants to read great writing please google the Great Films- Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I have never read a review with more heart or insight into humanity and even Steve Martin praised it and said John Candy would be proud.

I'm glad both Siskel & Ebert placed Wag the Dog and In the Company of Men on their top ten list here. To me, these movies were the clear standouts for 1997. Overall, 1997 was a pretty good year for movies, I"m surprised I saw at least 8 of these movies I was stationed at Yokota Air Base, Japan.. it was one of the few times I actually saw some of these movies at the base theater, which are usually pretty bland compared to an off base theater. The only theater I went to in Tokyo was an Imax theater in Shinjuku I saw Mission to Mir the poster in the lobby was signed by one of the astronauts Norm Thagard. My list of the best movies of 1997 are
    1. Wag the Dog

This was a banner year for me: I was 16 and I really got into renting movies that year. And I saw a number of films because of their recommendations. LA Confidential was my favorite film for years and Good Will Hunting wasn’t far behind. I saw In The Company of Men and The Sweet Hereafter and they are some of the most gut-wrenching films one will ever see (and on my all-time list). Wag The Dog is has fallen into obscurity sadly despite how much of a distracted reality we live in. The Ice Storm isn’t well known outside of the time of its release but it’s a stunning bit of period drama that needs wider recognition. Wag and Ice deserve rewatches as I’ve only seen them once.
I disliked Boogie Nights because of how nihilistic and pointless it felt on first release, but I think I might need to rewatch it as I’ve become of a fan of PTAs work after seeing Hard Eight and Punch Drunk Love. Other films I need to see are Jackie Brown, The Full Monty and Eve’s Bayou.
Titanic is overrated and one of the worst films I’ve ever seen.
Other favorites from 1997 were Chasing Amy, Starship Troopers, Contact, Private Parts, Open Your Eyes (Abra Los Ojos) and Breakdown.

Definitely give Boogie Nights another go. It's not nihilistic IMO as much as it is a portrait of characters who simply refuse to see how downtrodden and hopeless their lives are. I haven't been a big fan of most of PTA's films although I fiercely respect them- the best for me are Boogie Nights and (obviously) There Will Be Blood.

The Game was okay but compared to Fincher’s previous effort Se7en it was a bit underwhelming in my opinion, sort of follows the same trend where the next film after the breakout is a bit of a slump, ie: Magnolia after Boogie Nights (both of which I still love btw), Midsommar after Hereditary etc.

As a lover of Japanese cinema, I found Maborosi to be a beautiful film if you have patience, but it doesn't have a great deal of substance. A lot of long, still, shots of landscapes, people and interiors. It's a cheap tactic designed to impart gravity to a scene where there may be done. Very simple story done at a very slow pace, and the ambiguity as to why her husband jumped on the train tracks is also a bit of a cheap storytelling tactic. Aesthetically it succeeds but on a storytelling level it really doesn't offer that much.

I was around in the "early days", and I don't share this memory of the "good old days". Internet in the very early days actually resemble the darknet of today - basically anything goes. The days of goats.ex and various BBS with all kinds of conspiracies and college students engaging in flame wars and petty bickering, and trivially initiated antagonism using racial, sexist and homophobic slurs was rampant. I don't think it was at all what people "remembered".
On the other hand, if you mean the maturation of commercialism, then yes, I agree. Those were innocent times when the internet wasn't a big enough deal for the corporations to take over, yet.

16:54 - Wasted sentiment unfortunately. Not only did "The Ice Storm" die at the box office, but it's doubtful that many Academy voters ever saw it. 2007 was a solid year. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton, Juno, Ratatouille, Once, Sweeney Todd, Charlie Wilson’s War, Eastern Promises, Superbad, Grindhouse (your milage may vary on that one), 300.

'97 had so many: Contact, JB, 5th Element, Gross Pointe Blank, GWH, LA Conf, Kiss the Girls, Donnie Brasco, Cop Land, Princess Mononoke, the Spanish Prisoner, Rainmaker. Why settle for the worst-evers like Titanic and Eve's Bayou? Unwatchable dogsh_t.

Oh come on Titanic was good. Yeah you got sick of hearing about it at the time along with Dion's song but watch it again and it's still one of Cameron's best.

    Omg.
'Eve's Bayou' was one of the WORST film ive seen in a long time. Like a really bad episode of the TV show 'in the heat of the night' imo.
I was bowled over how awful it was. The plastic overdramatic acting
    the hamfisted editing
    the characatures of everybody involved
    Wow.
