Shamu Show Incident Nov. 15 2006

  • On Nov 15, 2006 one of the killer whales in the Shamu Show at Sea World in San Diego took one of the trainers on an unplanned "ride" under water. This happened two weeks before the more highly publicized accident that happened on Nov. 29, 2006. Watch the trainer who dives off of a whale to the right of the screen.
****Lots of people have stated in the comments that they didn't see what happened. First...when this actually happened, I didn't even realize I captured it on video--I wasn't zoomed in on any specific whale or person until I realized something was wrong. If you watch the trainer who dives in the water at the beginning, as he gets part way across the pool a whale comes up behind him and they both disappear under the water. And, if you watch the trainers on the stage, you'll notice they go into a panic/rescue mode. Yeah, it isn't the best video quality and doesn't show a lot of details due to the low resolution when I uploaded it.

really dont think so because seaworld just use animals to get money and dont think they will never get rid of their animals because Animals brings the money
and that whale is a female orca whale who is Orkid........
but you are right, they need to let the orcas go because a lot of Orcas dont live that long in seaworld...Orcas life ages is 30 to 50 in the wild but most of the orcas in seaworld died between 10 to 29 at a young age

Do your research. If you did you would know Seaworld has whales over 29. Tilikum, 35, Ulises 38, Kasatka 39, Katina 40, Corky 53. Seaworld Educates and cares for these animals. Do your research.

This happened to the best trainer at a show and he was a diver too so he knew about breathing techniques. The whale would bring him up and instead of panicking he just calmly pet it while doing his breathing. Then it would take him back to the bottom. This happened like 4 times. He finally got loose and swam to the stage and got up to run as far away from the water as possible but his feet were so mangled, he couldn't stand and kept falling. But due to his diving skills, he survived it.

One of the orcas involved is Orkid, Seaworld's most intelligent orca. She was born in 1988 in Seaworld San Diego. Orkid is a Northern Resident, North Atlantic Type 1 hybrid. Her father, Orky, was Canadian, and her mother, Kandu V, was from Iceland. Orkid lost her mother in a tragic accident when she was only 11 months old. She was raised by Corky (Northern Resident) and Kasatka (Icelandic). Orkid has lost her father, mother, and best friends Splash, Sumar and Nakai. The trainers gave her the nickname 'rocket scientist.' She was involved in several incidents.

These animals are attacking because they are psychologically unstable due to being taken out of nature and put into these small environments and forced to do tricks for food!

0:01 Trainer dives into tank from right side of screen. Swims towards stage.
0:13 Just before making it to stage, he gets dragged down into water by orca. Remains under water for a long while. Other trainers start calling and distracting orcas.
0:40 Dragged down trainer finally pops on left side of screen while orcas are still being distracted. He gets signaled and helped out of the water as he limps out of the stage.
Conclusion: None of this would happen if orcas were not kept captive or trained like circus animals. #FreeTheOrcas

Whole park got shut down for the rest of the day after the attacks and leaving was scary. We had been in some indoor acrobatics show when the rest of the park had emptied out, so there were only a few visible employees and no other members of the public in the park when we got told to make our way out. There were only about 20-30 cars left in the whole lot. Massive amount of empty space that, in hindsight, makes you realise how much space they actually had when creating the place and how much more they should have given to the animals.

@@johndoe-zi4ee You severely underestimate Orcas. They are easily one of the most intelligent species on the planet behind Humans, along with basically Elephants and a handful of others. Wild ones catch their prey and throw it back into the sea to catch it again for fun like a house cat does with a mouse. A group of only 2 Orcas can easily kill a Blue Whale, and they have been observed to do this and then only eat the tongue as it's their preferred part. A formerly captive Orca would have absolutely no trouble finding food.
Their struggles in the open water would likely be more of a social nature (ie finding other Orcas, successfully coexisting with them without conflict, and breeding) as they have grown up in cramped conditions and without any normal kind of interaction with other Orcas. This is the equaivalent of a human being imprisoned in an area of around 20 square metres, never allowed outside and spending many long periods of time in solitary confinement.

*heres whats going on,* and LOTS of backstory information, if anyone didnt know or is genuinely wondering(also, this incident was NOT in blackfish - thats another one with orkid and SPLASH, not sumar):
    timestamps ⬇️
    - 0:01 at the beginning, you see orkid (female, still alive) splashing people coming from the left side, and sumar (male, deceasd 2010) with a trainer on his back/side on the right.
    - 0:02 when both orcas are whistled to come to the stage, the trainer jumps off and sumar goes to, well the stage.
    - 0:05 orkid, however, swims back, she sees the trainer in the open water and begins to attack.
    - 0:10 you can see orkid swimming towards the trainer
    - 0:13 the trainer is dragged down, orkid partially surfaces.
    - 0:21 sumar leaves his trainer. for a couple seconds sumar and orkid did something under the water, moving him toward the left side of the pool.
    - 0:22 the other trainers at the stage start slapping the water in order to get the whales attention. they also bring out the yellow tone box, also used to get the whales to come to the stage.
    - 0:38 both whales finally go to the stage(sumar on the left, orkid at the right).
    - 0:43 you can see how the trainer tells orkid to follow him going farther away from the trainer she had previously attacked. for a couple of seconds she doesnt look at the trainer, more a sign of her looking for the guy she just attacked.
    - 0:48 she(orkid) quickly gave up and is called to do another behavior (trick).
    - 0:49 the injured trainer starts swimming towards the stage.
    - 1:08 although when the trainer that was attacked was on stage and had no tears in his wetsuit, he could be seen limping while heading backstage.
edit october 11 2021: i added timestamps and a little bit of info about orkid(below), hope this makes it easier to understand!
3rd edit, nov 13 '22; i rolled back to this video and decided to add more information on orkids story, with the death of another one of her best friends earlier this year. the parts between lines is where i added more content, for anyone who has seen this comment before.
*this part may contain a trigger warning*
why did orkid(and sumar) do this? i cant tell you for sure. HOWEVER, at three days old, orkids father died(this just means that orkid would have less of a parental like figure around - male killer whales dont play any role in the youth of their offsprings young and actually leave the mother once they mate). on august 21, 1989, orkids mother, kandu v (5) decided to ram another whale named corky II (2) during the middle of a show. corky II had 7 calves, and the longest one, name kiva, survived just over 40 days. corky II noticed that kandu v's calf (orkid) was going to survive, and therefore wanted to help out simply because she could no longer have a calf of her own. kandu v, being a very aggressive whale, did not like how her daughter was getting attention from corky II. kandu v, in the midst of a show, rammed and pushed corky II *HARD* into a wall, rupturing a part of her abdomen. however, kandu v had the *WORST* of it. she swam into the back pool, bleeding to death. nearly 11 month old orkid witnessed everything and followed her mother. trainers moved the mother and calf into a med pool where it was discovered kandu v had broken her jaw violently and wasnt going to survive. they were let out of the med pool, where at one point kandu v beached herself. every time she had to take a breath (because orcas are mammals), blood went everywhere. trainers could be seen cleaning the bloodied walls, it was like spray paint. 45 minutes after kandu v attacked corky II, kandu v died. very young orkid, seeing every moment of everything, circled her mothers lifeless body at the bottom of the pool for a few hours before it had to be removed. corky II suffered a nearly blind left eye as well, but still lives to this day. orkid also lives with corky II. both have not moved out of the small tanks at seaworld san diego for over 30 years, heck orkid hasnt moved once. another whale was there at the time of the incident, named knootka, however she never came in contact with kandu v on that fateful day. knootka died a year later in 1990.
    -----------
with that being said, orkid has also lost other whales around her pretty constantly. splash came in from marineland ontario in the early 90s as a result of the health problems he gained from his father(kandu VII/7, who would later die of cancer. all calves at marineland would be sired by kandu vii, and several of them, like nova and malik, would have long lasting health problems). splash was originally named katak(but seaworld has to change it to a very basic whale name) and eventually started suffering from seizures once at seaworld san diego. at one point, splash hit a gate as a result of a seizure, and orkid quite frankly saved him from the incident, which would leave splash's jaw permanently open, and the tip would become quite bent. in 1991, kasatka(moved in 1990) gave birth to takara, another female companion for orkid. in 1999, very young male "sumar" would join the pod as a result of his mother, taima, violently rejecting him at a few months old. however, in 2000, sumar would be moved to seaworld ohio, returning a year later following seaworld ohios closure. in 2001, kasatka gave birth to nakai, who was the first orca to be born and sired through artificial insemination(AI). 8 months later, in 2002, takara gave birth to her first calf, another female, named kohana(also sired via AI). all seems to be going good, right? orkid has many pod members and she still lives with her best friends, takara, sumar, and splash.
however, in 2004, takara and kohana were shipped across the country to seaworld orlando. takara would later moved to seaworld san antonio in 2009(where she does live today), and kohana would move to loro parque in 2006(where she recently died 60 days ago in mid september from a birth defect - something she had all her life). in spring of 2005, splash died from his health issues. its thought that sumar and orkid were at the med pool gate when he died.
nakai, sumar, and orkid became a well known pair and were often seen together. in 2010, sumar suddenly died, and a well known video of a helicopter angle view can be seen with orkid and sumar's dead body. she was "stuck" in the med pool, and can be seen moving her head towards his body as it was moved out of the tank for a necropsy(animal autopsy). 2012 and 2013 brought hope for orkid. shouka, a female just younger than orkid, moved to the park, followed by kasatka giving birth to her 4th calf(kalia was born in 2004), a male later named makani. in 2017, kasatka was euthanized after long term ongoing(and incredibly noticeable) failing health. similar to splash's death, makani and orkid were at the gate where kasatka died. very recently, in august of 2022, nakai died as well. orkid has never had a calf despite mating with nearly every male at seaworld san diego, including AI attempts. shes basically infertile (theres no reason to believe otherwise), and i wonder how much it would affect her if she did half a child of her own. orkid's never moved out of seaworld san diego. she's lived in the same tank for everything. EVERYTHING. 34+ years, 17 recorded incidents(probably more). is that really worth it?
    -----------
please please please dont believe everything these parks tell you. seaworld says their shows are NOT entertainment, however the whales, like orkid, still do completely unnatural behaviors. they dont do front flips in the wild. they dont beach themselves in the wild, in fact none of the orcas would do that (none are argentinain. only around 5 orcas have ever beached themselves for seals). they wouldnt spin around or wave at you. thats called entertainment, not education. its not wild nor is it natural. these arent wild animals. most havent even been outside seaworlds walls.
one of my favorite quotes is "dolphin shows are meant to WOW you, not educate you". because, its true. your fascinated by what they can do, you dont stop to actually think if they would do that in the wild.
    #emptythetanks
    more bonus info from previously:
edit may 11 2021: i see this has a lot of attention so i thought id include so bonus info
here is whats under "behavioral incidents" on a 2010 seaworld official animal record:
    11/15/06 Dunked Trainer
and here is that report on the incident (the document i got this from doesnt allow me to copy stuff so sorry if somethings a bit off). also yes, that confirms that the other whale was indeed sumar like i had previously thought.
"In November 2006, she was performing a double waterwork sequence with Sumar in a show. Sumar and his trainer were on a fluke splash behavior while she was sent on a dry fluke splash behavior. Sumar's trainer dove into the pool and asked for a stage call. Both whales responded but as the trainer began to swim toward the stage she turned and grabbed him by the foot. She let him go and responded to a hand slap stage call. It took about three slaps for this response."
extra: (two paragraphs down) "We have been out of the water with Orkid since November 2006 as a result of another incident." (this video)

Anita Marie well said, Anita! Nonchalant is exactly the word that came to mind for me too when I saw the trainer limping offstage. This man is lucky to be alive! The orca held him underwater for sometime and the attack on Dawn Brancheau just 4 years later she didn't get to limp away. Also incredible that the man who is slapping the water here is Ken Peters, who himself is extremely lucky to be alive after being attacked by Kasatka! I find myself asking "why would I believe a paid SW trainer over two highly educated scientists like Dr. Visser and Dr. Naomi Rose who both agree that captivity is harmful. So what if you "love" the whales! If you did love them, you would do what's in THEIR best interest, not yours. That's what love is. Love does not equal captivity!

Anita Marie Yes, it is totally creepy! Especially the creepy fake smile that woman gives after saying "I wouldn't work here if it wasn't!" And what a lame argument that is. Thank goodness people are waking up. I'm hearing that people are leaving lots of comments on the SeaWorld commercial video on UA-cam and surprise, surprise....SeaWorld is deleting all the "negative" (read: truthful) comments and they're keeping only the postive comments that I'm sure 95% of which are written by Sea World PR staff or other employees.

Guy is just trying to earn a paycheck. I’m sure he likes the whales and he wasn’t the one who put them in that enclosure, he just works there. The people responsible for putting the whales there are in offices and will never be in that position.

Imagine being dragged by an orca and all you hear is triumphant music and on top of that they're chanting SHAMU, SHAMU! as if they're cheering for the whale to kill you!

If someone daily shovelled a bucket of dead fish onto my mouth when I was used to catching it myself with my family, I'd be pissed off too

Orca wasn't trying to eat him. He was just pissed. Orcas don't eat humans and dont naturally attack humans. ALl Orca attacks happen because they finally snap under pressure.
