Can I just say... I like how deliberate Charles is in breaking down and explaining some of the processes like 3D printing, light sensor, crimping, etc. I can totally see all the effort going into deciding how much is too much info, so that the audience doesn't get too bored, yet maintaining a level of educational sense. Great job!
might be fun to make a infrared 'gun' on the front with sensors on the rear of the cart were you can 'fire' red and blue shells at each other causing a drop of power for a second or two.
To be fair, the speed stat is one of the most useless, as miniturbo and friction can easily overpower it due to how often you're drifting, so technically it's not wrong. Of all the stats, those two are the ones you want to focus on.
Let's hope they do the same for the mario kart 'drift' system because if there's one thing more important than boosting, is taking cornering lines better and boosting more often in the process
💯 Couldn’t agree more - stopped watching for a while because some were aimed more at younger audiences and James wasn’t in most of the vids that much. I missed the old days when James was the centre with projects like the cap shield but I really enjoyed this vid and thought Charles and James as the leads worked out really well - on a side note James, when are you gonna cut your hair 😂
For other power ups you could connect all the karts via bluetooth or wifi. A red shell would briefly shutoff the motor of the kart in front of you, a banana could slow done the person and a blue shell would briefly shut off the person in first. Using the color sensor you could use a counter for laps or checkpoints so the karts no who is in what position. This might be complicated solution but I'm sure what ever you would be super intuitive.
I was thinking, you could get some infrared sensors in front and in the back of every kart, that way you can make a Shell power up, if you have another kart in front of you and you used a shell power up it will slow down the kart in front of you. Also a banana peel power up, it does the same but to the kart behind of you
I’d absolutely LOVE to see you guys mount some sort of cameras to the car and then hook the controls up to some wireless controllers. Then have 4 people control the carts with the 4 “drivers” sitting in the carts just along for the ride almost like the game!
Love this idea and implementation, its super cool. Can't wait to see a Mario Kart track built outside or something with a team battle :D Maybe instead of vinyl, an actual paint job would be more aesthetically pleasing?
one of the best cases of gamification I have ever seen! My mind melts at how good this is and how much more could be done with this, I can easily see there being professional businesses based on this because who wouldnt pay to do races like this??
You should incorporate the shells too. The way I see this being possible is; connect all the cars via some sort of radio control. Have the yellow squares give the options for Red or Blue shells also. If someone gets a blue shell and "shoots" it, then the car in first place loses power for 1 second. This will simulate the spin out. If you select the Red Shells and "shoot", the next car in front of you would get the loss of power, similar to how the shell finds the next car in the game. Great build as always.
This is so cool. When I went to Coco Beach in Florida there was a Mario Kart race track that also give you power ups but they used something else to identify the items. They had more items like coins and other stuff that makes your opponents slow down. It would be cool to see how you guys would implement that into your Mario Karts especially because the ones I tried weren’t all that great but the idea was cool.
I love this video, and seeing how things work and how they're built and what the end effect is of the modifications! This channel piques my sense of curiosity and I love it
One thing you might do to enact negative powerups would be to connect the arduinos together with BTLE. that way you could do a negative speed boost to a random enemy. I like the idea of the infrared gun, but you'd have to do it in such a way that the user doesn't have to aim it... it seems like you already have your hands full just driving! Nice job!

That looks like so much fun. Reminds me of the drift carts we used to race on the shamrock. Whenever it snowed, we would put nubby bolts on them and make a whole day of it until the PVC tires just broke off. Great vid guys!
Hook up parts from a laser tag set to get virtual turtle shells! Hook up a microcontroller to make the kart "fire" the shell, or "spin out" if it gets hit. put the sensors on the back/sides, and the laser on the front. This is so cool
I think these are great. I feel like I have a good idea for the red shell power-ups that could make these really like mario kart but safe. If you put a row of IR lights in the front of the kart and IR receivers in the back of them you could shoot your power ups like in the game. When the IR receiver detects a IR light from the kart behind it will apply the electrical brake or cut the motors for 1 second. This way people could use the red shell as a strategic offense and bring a bit more fun into them other than just boosts. You could probably bring the banana power up in as well if you put IR lights and receivers on the opposite but that might get complicated and cause interference when you use your own red shell 😅
