  • We'll show you how to install our Tappet Cuffs on a Harley-Davidson® Milwaukee 8® engine.
    The new M8 engines are proving to be a stout motor that responds well to hop ups - but one of the components we were not happy with is the plastic tappet guides that could potentially let tappets twist under high RPM and when coupled with high lift cams. We developed a clean solution in our new machined aluminum and hard anodized Tappet Cuffs. Designed to stabilize tappets in high performance M8 engines, these should pair well with any cam change and are a must have for Stage 2 and above builds.

    S&S have the best videos. Because of these I built way more confidence long ago.

    So basically , if a nut is 6 sided, then 6 flats equals one full turn or 360 degrees. So if it calls for 24 flats , then you divide 24 by 6 , and you get 4 turns. Hope this makes sense.

    Another problem solved by the BEST in the business. LORD knows the M8s, have MORE than their fair share of problems.
    LONG LIVE the T.C.!( with S&S gear drive cams of course)

    24 flats is not understood by most but number of complete and partial turns is more easily understood.

    Mark the pushrod to count 4 turns or the equivalent of 24 flat sides of the nut or “flats”

    Any problems removing the bolts to the tappet covers? I heard of bolts breaking having to remove the engine to get the broken bolt extracted!

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  6 років тому +2

      We have heard of this issue, due to the Loctite patch on the stock bolts. Some heat applied carefully to the center of the bolt head can help them to break loose.

    This all sounds great an all but my concern is the adjustable push rods. Is there a frequency at which the torque of the lock nut must be checked? Also have you received any reports of the push rods ever coming loose under continued high RPM operation (I like to ring the bike out more often than most). Thanks

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  6 років тому +2

      No issues with the jam nut backing off and they do not need to be checked - We also have not had any failures with these pushrods.

      Fair enough, can't wait for the break-in period to be over to start adding power. Thank you for the reply.

      I've run adjustable pushrods since 1988 on many HDs, mine and customer bikes. S&S parts (and bolt cutters) have been very good to me.

    plastic tappet cuffs another mistake for Harley, they should have learned from twin cam mistakes

    • @levievans9311
      @levievans9311 5 років тому +1

      Some plastics are extremely strong and engineered to withstand heat.On the flip side.I am pretty sure Harley knows and refused to spend the money to metal them all out and said.Let them pay for it.Either though personal preference or when upgrading to uh stage 3 or 4 Screamin Eagle kit.Which has not been going well for customer's.😲😤🤑

    Do you have to inflate the tappet before installing the push rods?

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  6 років тому

      Hey there - not sure what you mean by "inflate" - but you don't have to do anything to the tappet to install. Here's the instructions www.sscycle.com/docs/default-source/instruction-sheets/510-0575-tappet-cuffs-for-m8.pdf?sfvrsn=2

      If you have to wait 20min for them to "bleed down". It will take that long to get the bike on a jack. So, would they have not been bleed down by assemble time.
