Yeah, the Molotov-Ribbentropp pact is basically something that never officially happened in Russian history (edit: at least it used to be. A kind commenter has informed me that it is now part of the curriculum). Imagine a puzzle missing a specific piece-technically you can’t see the piece, but you know what the piece looks like. It’s a void in the timeline whose specifically shaped absence tells you more about it than its name.

Stalinist oligarchs also hate "the betrayal" more than the fascism. Many of these dinosaurs believe Hitler spoiled a good allied bulwark against "Anglo imperialist capitalism" as they agree with the Nazis assessment of more "progressive socialist causes" like lbg/trans rights and "the JQ" (even as, as most righties will point out, they are jews themselves. They are pro-Russian-culture which often means despite being born Jewish, they are "politically" atheist or Russian Orthodox)
Look at Nazi Germany propaganda art vs "Soviet Social Realism" vs Maoist Cultural Revolution. The first two are closer together than the last two, especially as the schism begins to form after the Great Leap Forward

    • @cyberbanshee

One of the important features of fascism is that it is completely unprincipled. When necessary, Putin will glorify the exploits of the great grandfathers in the fight against the Nazis, and in other cases it is quite possible to blame the Poles (after all, the Soviet Union was a supporter of Hitler at the beginning of the Second World War)...

That is because they still try to position Russia as USSR on most of propaganda channels inside Russia. They even call Tucker boy an "independent" journalist, not a right-wing. Gotta call something out- Tucker Carlson IS a true believer.
He made multiple trips to Nicaragua in the 1980’s to support the CONTRAS.
You can listen to interviews/convos where he’s a little more off script and reveals some of his true beliefs,
He’s a far right-winger through and through. Believes heavily in might makes right and natural hierarchy.
He’s the heir to a vast fortune-he doesn’t have to do any of this for a living. He does it because he loves it.
Now differentiate this from Candace Owens, for example.
She by all accounts is an empty vessel chasing a paycheck. Incoherent, inconsistent, a grifter to the core.
Carlson though…he really believes that rigid repressive right wing politics are what humanity needs.

Yeah Tucker's Trinity college year book entry ties him to a society named the Dan White society, and also references the Jesse Helms Foundation.
Dan White was the guy who assassinated Harvey Milk, and Jesse Helms was a homophobic North Carolina Senator who strongly opposed funding for AIDS research.
The college denied there was actually a Dan White society, but Cucker refused to address the controversial entry directly and just went after the journalist who released the yearbook entry back in 2019.
      I definitely think he's a genuine fascist.

100% Tucker Carlson is a true believer.
Directing his Fox audience towards Hungary and hero worshipping Victor Orban proved that to me. Carlson even presented his show from Hungary, and not long after Orban was guest of honour at CPAC.
Orban's Hungary is the blueprint for what US fascists want for America. During his tenure, Orban has gradually removed separation of entities like government executive and judiciary, and he now basically controls every aspect of Hungarian life: TV, radio, internet, newspapers,, courts, education, academia, even lifestyle magazines.
Plus there's the inevitable oppression and scapegoating of minorities like immigrants, LGBTQ, Jewish people, muslims and anyone the regime thinks it can "other" to further consolidate power.

Basically, the "Nazi problem" applies to almost all post-soviet countries, and in all of the countries, it is not a problem at all, including both Ukraine with their right sector and Russia. Even if right-wing extremists were able to gather quite an impressive number of people for their protests and processions, they were never presented in the governments; they didn't, and they don't have real power. "Ukraine has nazis/is a nazi country" is Kremlin propaganda, a casus-belli that exploits our obsession with the great victory against the Third Reich, created for the domestic audience. Probably, the Kremlin now tries to push this idea to the West, and, I must admit, it sounds well - the USA supports the nazi regime in Ukraine, bla bla bla. It can easily convince people who know nothing about Ukraine/Russia
It is not like I'm trying to persuade you or something, just saying.

It's funny how different this interview seems from both sides. I, as a Russian, can almost feel how panicked and grabbing their own heads Russian propaganda felt, when Putin started "history lessons", instead of trying to appeal to American audience. Putin used Tucker like an idiot. Putin's goal was to "school" a U.S. journalist for a domestic audience. Tucker's goal was to have Putin parrot right-wing U.S. talking points about things like the culture war. Putin doesn't really give much of a shit about the culture war, so he got out of this interview what he wanted and Tucker got very little of what he wanted.

Putin's also wrong about Danzig/Gdansk being awarded to Poland after WW1. This, admittedly majority German, area was an independent territory overseen by the League of Nations until the German invasion of Poland. The authoritarian government that presided over the final years of the 2nd Polish Republic had a defensive agreement with Nazi Germany and considered them to be, if not allies, then at least a friendly country right up until 1938.

I do have to push back a little bit on the "If only the Western Powers would have been a little nicer to Russia" idea. Russia was an evil dictatorship from way before WWII, and the rest of Europe knew it. We didn't cut off Eastern Germany from the rest of Germany, Russia did. The isolation of West-Berlin, and the famous air-bridge that kept West-Berlin alive, as well as the whole Iron Curtain affair, was all done by Russia. We had good reasons to not trust Russia too much. Not saying that the USA were squeaky clean on the worlds political theatre after WWII, but Russia (or at least their powers that were) really brought their treatment on themselves.
