  • Indigenous Advance Ministries had its mission threatened when Bank of America abruptly closed its accounts. Learn more: adflegal.org/press-release/ba...
Indigenous Advance serves vulnerable children and those in need in Uganda, and it has been committed to this mission since its founding in 2015. But in 2023, founder Steve Happ received a series of letters from Bank of America informing him that the bank would close Indigenous Advance’s accounts within 30 days. It also closed the accounts of a church supporting Indigenous Advance and another company that employs Ugandans, and it did not provide a clear explanation.
When Steve got the letter, he was planning to leave for a mission trip in just two weeks, and he had to scramble to change accounts. He was also forced to delay paychecks to employees, many of whom live meal to meal, for several weeks.
Unfortunately, Indigenous Advance is not the only organization that has become a victim of de-banking. Some of America’s largest banks have closed the accounts of people and organizations who hold different beliefs than they do, usually citing vague “risk tolerance” or similar policies.
Steve shared his story with Bank of America shareholders and urged them to support the Report on Risks of Politicized De-banking so that others do not have to endure the same fate that he did.

I worked for BOA for several years because they acquired SeaFirst bank where I was employed. Instead of giving me the percentage raise in pay my performance review called for, they gave me a one-time bonus check, robbing me of future income and 401K matching!!! 15 Republican state AGs sent a letter to BOA expressing concern that the bank is closing accounts of organizations with “religious and political views with which it disagrees. Debanking has escalated in recent years. Why? DEI? Wokeness? Leftwing shareholder pressure?
