Just pay for the shipping and there will be no charge on the labor for you. I really enjoy this hobby. Hope all is well with you and your family. God bless.
That is gong to be a nice little runner. Sort of glad you did not go crazy with a full restoration and paint. Thank you for showing us how to do it, Robert. Stay safe and stay cool
I have went all out with a couple of lanterns that turned out really well but after that kind of work you don't want to use them anymore. I like to play with my toys. L.o.l. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Awesome. If you have any trouble just let me know. I will try and walk you through it. The main thing to making them run again is a good cleaning from the inside out.
I just love the 502, for its vintage look. Hope I come across one somewhere here in Holland. Loved the video. I have 3 550's I wanna refurbish, and was watching for how you did the generator, though it's different. Learned a lot about this one though, thanks.
Just bought one of these and waiting to receive it. I recently restored my gramps 1958 2 burner Coleman he gifted me before he passed all the way back in the 80s, and after two trips camping on the beach in Texas at padre this year and last, it needs cleaned up and repainted again. The salt is rough on equipment. Only thing I can't do is remove the check valve because I don't have the tool.
That's awesome. Pass it down to your children and hopefully they can do the same. It is possible to remove a check valve without the tool 🔧 but it is risky. Some come out easily but others can really be difficult 😕. If you have a stubborn one you will break the valve trying to remove it without the proper tool. Here is a link to the guy who made the one I have. I highly recommend it. I also have a video on cleaning a check valve without removing it. I will try to find it and give you a link. Thanks for watching and God bless. facebook.com/profile.php?id=100011117415569
@@BluegrassBushcraft Stove arrived in good shape. However the check valve did leak when pressurized. Managed to get it loose by soaking it in blaster for two days. Ground down a #3 flathead screwdriver and cracked it with relative ease after the soak. Vinegar boil got the gunk out of the valve. Turns out my gramps late 50's 425 two burner has a leaking check valve as well, so I went ahead and ordered the tool. Although it appears the earlier stoves have a narrower slot on the valve. So the tool I fabricated didn't fit. Hoping the removal tool will be the correct fit.
It all depends on who made the tool. The tool I have is reversible with a different size on each end. Some of the ones sold on ebay only fit one size. Or maybe it's the smaller size and will fit both slots but one will be a sloppy fit and could risk damage to the valve.
WoW great restoration and it seems to run really good👌👌👌 Those white gas stoves are unbeatable maybe too heavy for today standards but goddem They are so fun to use.
That's part of what's wrong with this country now. We have gotten lazy. We want everything convenient and light weight. They just don't make things like they used to do.
Thank you so much for this video. I inherited a 502 from my dad that we have had since the 70's. It never ran right, even when it was new and therefore seldom used. When I light it, it seems to leak fuel from underneath the burner plate and turns into a fireball. I have been wanting to rebuild it, but have not tackled that project yet because all I found online were lighting instruction videos. I'm glad I waited because I had no idea that there sere so many small and hidden parts, and specialized tools needed. I will see if I can obtain the tools combined with some of your fine techniques, and see if I can give this coffee making machine a new life.
The only special tool needed is the check valve removal tool and you may not need to remove the valve unless it's gummed up really bad. You can remove the pump steam and spray carburetor cleaner into the pump housing and let it soak over night. After that use the red straw that comes with the can and it should be long enough to reach to the bottom and push it directly into the center where the stem threads in and spray it through the valve several times to clean it out. If you were a collector I would recommend you buying the tool. It's the best investment a collector can make. I know a guy I think he is in Ohio who manufactures the tool. It was thirty five dollars shipped at the time I bought it.
I have Coleman 508 bought used but it was new or hardly used. Or it looks that way. The problem is same as Robert Gate's 502 stove. Fuel leaks at under then burning plate. Green body gets wet with fuel and the flame is not controlled to be able to cook. It seems reading your reply to the problem is at the valve, inside the fuel tank. Assuming this stove is new (or almost new), is there a chance the valve is clogged? But then Robert's 502, he said was acting that way since new. Thanks you very much for your video and appreciate your meticulousness on working on the project.
@@michaelkim8666 I have never repaired a 508 yet. Let me look in my collection and see if I even have one to look at. If not I will try to do a little research on it. Not exactly sure what type of generator is on it. If it's the straight generator going across the top of the burner it could be as simple as tightening the generator nut or worse case scenario it could have been over tightened and cracked the generator. If it's the newer type generator that bends around the burner it just may need to be bent to fit more snugly into the burner. Simple fix. You can pump it up and try and seen exactly where the fuel is coming from and start there. If leaking through the valve it may just need to be tightened a little or the packing replaced which is available at oldColemanparts.Com for just a few bucks plus shipping.
@@BluegrassBushcraft I took apart the generator and checked for any damages to find nothing visible. It seems that the stove is working but the flame makes funny noise as if the fuel is being delivered in batched. I have taken video but I am unable to attach here. But then the real problem is after it is shut off. I waited about 5 minutes or longer. Turn the on/off switch to on, there is no fume coming out of the burner unit. Instead, I have fuel leaking from end of generator, leaking on to the body of stove. As a result, I cannot light the stove. Sorry, it is hard to explain when I do not even know the names of parts... This 508 has two control. One is on/off and the other is flame control (low, to high).
I always loved my other 502 but was always afraid to use it. Didn't want to scratch it up or let it get wet or dirty. Lol. These are great little stoves and now I have one I can actually enjoy other than sitting on a shelf.
I just purchased a 502-700 on ebay. Good to know what I'm getting into. I'm hoping I can get the generator apart and cleaned because they appear to be somewhat hard to find at this point, and expensive when you can find them
Definitely great stoves and you are correct. The generators are hard to find and the people who do have extra know what they have and drive the price up. Lucky in most cases a with a little knowledge and a good cleaning they can be as good as new. I know on the reassembly video I filmed the back of my head more than the process but I plan on doing a remake video on the generator in the near future. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Yeah. Sorry about that. My little shop has very tight Quarters and not much room to move around. I will have another video in the near future of a model 505 and I will try to do better with it.
Great job Robert , looks really nice and works great . i got a i think 555 stove looks like yours but only about 7 yrs old and it leaks really bad so i cant use it ! atb john
Can you see where it's leaking? Most of these can be made to run again with a little effort. As long ad the font isn't rusted through on the bottom. I would be glad to fix it for free for you if you just pay the shipping.
Nice video on the generator but as far as the reassemble you couldn't see nothing but your back maybe you should do another video and reassemble it and explain the reassembly thank you
I do apologize for that. Sometimes it's really hard to make a video and do a job at the same time. I will do a short remake of video on just the generator in the near future. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Great video. Now I know how to work on my 502. Been watching yer videos for quite some time now. Best way to straighten out a collar is to use a wooden dowel and roll it on a flat surface. That's how I do mine. What caliber of gun cleaning bore brush fits into the generator tube? What size socket did ya use to make your valve assembly/disassembly tool? K9POW - Rusty in eastern Tennessee
Very informative video, thank you. What is the reason to remove check valve, just to free it up and clean it up so it's working right? Could you make extra check valve removal tools and how much would 1 cost ?
You got it. Sometimes if the lantern has been sitting a long period of time the oil from the pump leather with settle in the bottom and gum it up. Regular unleaded gasoline will also gum it up from the inside. This will cause the check valve to leak pressure off and it's it's gummed up really bad fuel will come up through the pump tube. I didn't make the tool. That's way over my pay grade. I bought it from Mike Wells on a Facebook Coleman group. You can also get them from old Coleman parts. Com. I will try and get you the link to the sites.
Yes. In most cases the generator can be cleaned to work like new. As long as I doesn't have a crack or split somewhere or if the small needle isn't broken off the tip.
Yes. You could probably get by with any other loctite bit I use the blue just incase I ever need to take it off again it will be a little easier to remove.
Yes. I heat it with a torch and spray with or wipe it down with oil. Let dry and repeat. The oil and heat will season the bare steel and slow down rusting process.
Inherited the same 502 one burner from my grandpa and came with the “heat hat” as well. Was wondering if you have a fix,as mines leaking fuel out of the flame adjustment lever. Assuming something is plugged up?
Most cases you can take a 7/16" wrench and snug down the valve nut to stop the leak. If that doesn't work you will have to replace the graphite packing. Not to hard to fix.
