I have worked for the same company for 20 years. One thing I learned is that you can never thank people enough. If somebody goes out of their way to help you or responds promptly to a request, always go above and beyond to let them know you appreciate it. This goes a long way to helping you excel at your job. It makes me look like an ultimate problem solver just by knowing the right person to message on Teams. I was in one field and then switched to a totally different part of the company because they wanted a problem solver on the team. This included a nice pay bump and higher yearly bonus.
Prioritize what matter most to you and say NO to things that don’t aligned with your priorities. You’ll make far more money and get things done faster! 🔥
I think this depends on how difficult the job is. If it requires moths of training, then you can take someone with soft skills and let them learn on the job. If the job requires years of training, then the hard skills become more important.
If you can't trust their character, then don't have them on your team. But you also need to trust that they can perform the specific function they are hired to perform. Otherwise you have to do your job, plus theirs. But I would say that a lot of managers are fooled by people that portray a higher level of skill than they actually have, they also get more credit for soft skills rather than technical expertise. Soft skills don't matter if you have work that needs to get done and nobody has the technical skill to pull it off.
Yea if you can get better in both categories, it would be the best scenario. Learn soft skills younger, and that will help you specialize in a skill as you develope. Learning from others and teamwork is very valueable early on.
What does it mean to be trustworthy? Being reliable, loyal, and honest? Or being liked, sociable, and friendly? I know people who rude yet reliable. Would they be considered trustworthy? Then there are some people who are extremely outgoing yet capable of backstabbing you.
Being liked, sociable, and friendly is everything. If you choose to be reliable, loyal, and honest, then you run the risk of saying and doing things that might offend others. Being truthful doesn't get things done if people's feelings get hurt or if their reality is threatened. On the other hand, being popular or being associated with popular people means connections. And connections means getting more money & getting what you want, i.e., living the easy good life. The opposite of that is being a poor nerd. Who wants to be a poor nerd? Who wants to be associated with poor nerds? Poor nerds live crappy lives working long hours making sure that they get all the details right for a lower fixed pay. Nobody wants that. Nobody wants to be associated with that. It doesn't get them what they want. It means a harder life. Sure, we need poor nerds like we need trash collectors. Just don't be associated with poor nerds in a picture. You don't want others to think you're one of them if you want to be popular. You can smile & pat the poor nerd on the back and make them feel better for a moment knowing that they're at least temporarily accepted by everything they wish they could have or be. A lot of college is about digesting information, reflecting on experiences and producing a coherent thesis on a subject matter that another person can understand and appreciate - which Patrick has been doing with these videos. You need both to succed in your job, just one of the two is not enough to make notable progress. Having soft skills and being trustworthy is not the same thing; you can be trustworthy without the soft skills or vice versa. Also trust isn't a personal characteristic although the speaker thinks it is. YOU trust people or PEOPLE trust you, it's subjective. So the title of the video should've been "Hard Skilled or a Trusted Employee" or something and personally I think it depends on your plan.
A leader makes people to follow them. A boss is just a title. Leaders are the ones moving things. Amazingly, there are people with poor social skills that you should not get rid of. Elon Musk is a great example. There are people from autistic specter that also must not be judged by their ability to socialize. Being popular is not a great sign of competence. The problem you are having is that you are linking popularity with high performance. If someone is not integrated to the team, it is because of poor leadership. A leader is the one who builds a team from very different people. It is not a normal socialization process like in high school or a party. So I totally disagree with you. People who do not perform have 3 possible situations: 1. Does not WANT. That is the type of people you do not want in your company. 2. Does not KNOW. Training fixes it. 3. CANNOT do. It can be a problem of EXPERIENCE, or RESOURCES or PERSONAL HARDSHIP. I once managed to recover a coworker from hardship back into full performance. It just required some support and empathy. That delayed my job like hell in that moment. But now I have a new friend for life. Knowledge is about locating dots, experience is about connecting the dots to make a drawing that makes sense. All knowledge can be documented, and also procedures can document some of the experience. More experienced people can see beyond. Trust? You can trust, but it does not mean that such person can be trusted. Scams happen because of that. Trust is earned, not given, but even trusted people can make decisions that kill all trust. People very often use labels to trust. "since he is family, I can trust him" "since he has this reputation I can trust him". Unless what is being handled is very secret and critical, there is no need to "trust" (aside of normal parameters of responsibility), you just need that person to get the job done. What matters more is the kind of relationship you establish with people. If relationship creates a habit of positive exchanges, it creates a good work environment. As long as you connect the best of people, a team can work better. People use their time and energy to create revenue. Mental games mean idle time not used to create revenue. You do not need to get people too close. There is a distance in which everyone gets along. But they need to be close enough to work as a team.
also known as "competence" / "warmth".. personally prefer competence bc ppl who try to come off as "warm" are often incompetent at doing so, and are just annoyingly touchy-feely

Don't use a screw driver to do the work of a hammer, and don't use a hammer when a screw driver is needed. By the same thinking, don't ask a salesman like David about technical issues. Watch his channel for sales advice -- which he is good at. Techies might learn something about self marketing from him. But ignore his silly taunts about technical skills. On that topic David obviously doesn't know what he is talking about. Techies and mechanical people know to use the right tool for the right job -- don't expect a salesman to make a useful comment about tech skills. Ask a techie about tech stuff. For business owners who run a complete business (we make stuff and we sell it) -- we need people with both hard and soft skills. If you are just a middle man (selling stuff that other people made), then I suppose you are then in David's wheelhouse
With the economy going into a recession, HARD SKILLS are going to blow soft skills out of the water soon. With the rise of the entitled worker, hard skill will be more valuable than ever. Employers are going to find ways to optimize production in order to eliminate superfluous positions, and to mitigate potential losses due to workers throwing temper tantrums.
This one of my favortie videos I have watched of yours, at least in the Business management category of videos anyway. Because your interviews are always awesome too. So much great information in this! I love when someone takes complicated subjects or topics and makes them easy to understand. This also makes it easy for people to share with others in an easy relatable way. I know I am and a lot of people are thirsty for knowledge these days. Because despite having the internet and access to knowledge on anything you could imagine...somehow it seems to be hard to come by, Truth and facts are hard to come by these days, because if you are trying to educate yourself on something you have to sift through and seperate the facts from fiction and depending on the topic sometimes the amount of fiction is overwhelming and can exhaust you before ever finding a credible source or website online. Anyway back to the video subject...I Love it and thank you for sharing!!! I will use this and also share what I just learned with my bosses and peers. and have a discussion on it. Should be interesting. Thanks as always and please keep em coming!! I love these types of videos you put out.
This is non sense, take Steve Jobs for example, he treated people like garbage, he had no technological skill, he is not someone you could trust, look what he created. So, this video is pure BS.
It is extremely hard nowdays to find people you trust. Family members will betray you in a blink of an eye, let alone strangers. The upper right quadrant are unicorns
Some of those 'high performers' who excel at things like coding, extreme math and technical work.....may be autistic. I think the problem is that the world expects and praises extroverts, as though 'thats normal' and anyone who isn't....there's something wrong with 'us'. Your people with mostly or only soft skills will have nothing to do with those soft skills if those with hard skills who may be at a core of 'creating' the product, such as developing the software of solving it at a technical level, are routinely bullied, harassed or fired because of who they are. Let me go work in my corner to get things done, or else I guess get rid of me and end up pursuing your unicorn candidate, or having no product and just a bunch of social butterflies. I get what you're saying all around and it's been hard for someone with lots of hard skills and can be hit/miss with soft, but managers and companies need to recognize this and that there is no good or bad. Theres nothing wrong with me, what's wrong is your (boss, manager, ceo) failure or inability to recognize and utilize my potential. If only the world was forced to accommodate introverts....it'd be a beautiful quiet place.
Completely agree. Just leave me in the corner by myself with a laptop, I'll do what you pay me to do. I'm really not with the communication, teamwork etc. I'm a tech nerd & that should be ok. Unfortunately it's not in today's society. We need more credit. The world would be void of modern technology if it wasn't for people like us.
Could you do a video on what makes a great COO? I love your CEO videos, but I feel like I need a shorter term goal. Not a whole lot on a COO and I would love your take on the topic
Taco stfu - just because you don’t have the balls to reach for something doesn’t mean to go around trolling people. You don’t know this man - Matt, first lesson here. And never get bitter at those who have no possibilities outside the prisons in their mind. That’s how you operate best.

I'm just a contact centre advisor right at the bottom of the ladder in my company, however, everyone at work says I get on with everybody at work. How do I utilise my being able to get on with people and work my way up in the company. My manager recently had me work on a project where I had to liaise with people very high up in the company doing some trial work, again, everyone involved was full of praise towards me and the work I did. I thought I might get a pay increase which I thought I'm overdue but I only got lots of praise. I'm happy that I'm valued, however, I wonder if I'm missing an opportunity. Unfortunately I don't have any higher educational qualifications.
I wish companies hired based off the that PBD discusses here but it’s simply not true. It’s all about your resume and the soft skills more often then not are sprinkles. It’s industry dependent but you stand no chance if you simply think soft skills are what can make you do x,y,z

Thank you thank you. 😊
I rather trust and teach
Maybe I am getting old I thought this was common knowledge. But I like this type of video with the pad
Soft skills pay more. But I personally respect those with hard skills as they're more rare
Thank you this is great info
Absolutely love the tee shirt...thank you pat...you inspire me, you are amazing...bless up...
Character wins the day in my opinion.
Great analysis
I love that shirt !
Very good!!!
This is non sense, take Steve Jobs for example, he treated people like garbage, he had no technological skill, he is not someone you could trust, look what he created.
So, this video is pure BS.
I will value trust over skills anytime
It is extremely hard nowdays to find people you trust. Family members will betray you in a blink of an eye, let alone strangers. The upper right quadrant are unicorns
Always great videos you always gave amazing amount of energy keep it going
Such Value Thanks
MOST OF US ARE A PAYCHECK AWAY FROM BEING HOMELESS, LEARN TO INVEST AND KEEP INVESTING UNTIL IT BECOMES A HABIT.
Pat where do I get that shirt I love it
Hi how do you learn soft and hard skills quickly and from a trusted source
Pat you need to drop that shirt it’s fire 🔥
Hello. Can you please help me find a book on hard skills. I work as a teacher, I need lectures.
Excellent
Great video
Thanks Pat, this is very encouraging :)..
loved it
Could you do a video on what makes a great COO? I love your CEO videos, but I feel like I need a shorter term goal. Not a whole lot on a COO and I would love your take on the topic
Dude u aren't going to be COO, you will be burger flipperOO.
Taco stfu - just because you don’t have the balls to reach for something doesn’t mean to go around trolling people. You don’t know this man - Matt, first lesson here. There will always be petty people trying to hold you down. Instead, find those who brings a synergy and consistency to your mission. And never get bitter at those who have no possibilities outside the prisons in their mind. That’s how you operate best.
Would you say that a person who has both those Soft and Hard skills would be good at having their own business? Are they the most likely to succeed?
I definitely think so! I think they would be successful
Where do I get that shirt?!
Anybody else loved lapid!
Did someone manage to download the infographic mentioned at the end of this video???
Guys, love the content but please do smth with the echo. It shouldn't be that hard of a problem to deal with.
Now I finally know how I've been messing up🧐
Thank you for sharing where I stand on this work, I will surely make a printout of this and transfer it on a cloth and hang myself. Coz I am pretty much horrible at most of the things. 🤯
Where can I order the shirt ?! 💪🏻
Also, what kind of employee someone wants to be.
Didnt a navy seal create a ted talk with exactly same box. 4 boxes in the box, It goes from low skill, low trust, to high skill, high trust, and in between.
I’ll be available in 6 months. 🙂😉
Please film a video where you wear that shirt around an outlaw biker outfit. THAT would be content
Edit: actually- don’t do that. That was a great breakdown. I’m dealing with a guy right now and you just helped me make a decision.
Player in making
Soft skills pays the bills
No sound
I wish companies hired based off the that PBD discusses here but it’s simply not true. It’s all about your resume and the soft skills more often then not are sprinkles. It’s industry dependent but you stand no chance if you simply think soft skills are what can make you do x,y,z
I dont think high skilled high trust people stay too Long. They move on Quick for more money and average managers see him as a menace.
Blackboard matches you more
I like that shirt
Soft skills : front of house
Hard skills : back of house
How can you be high performing but no trust, ????????
How do I get a 1%er shirt? I can’t find it on the site.
Wearing a 1% logo can get you in trouble in some places…
