My brother and I just finished a major “tune-up” with his wife’s 2014 Acura MDX. Everything from the timing-belt, spark ⚡️plugs, tire rotation, engine oil change, and transmission service was done in our backyard.
I know ZF wants everyone to perform a rain 🌧️ dance to level-check and fill up the transmission. But damn that, we just measured what came out, and put back in exactly that in fresh fluid. I hate the fact that the bolts aren’t reusable since they have a built-in rubber crush washer… seems like a waste to do that.
Yeah I won't be buying new drain/fill plugs.. Even if I have to make new ones on the lathe and retrofit crush washers!
I love this brother. Boom to the point no BS. Put pack what drained. Everything gets over thought. Well done.
Just did the 2023 Ridgeline, 3.7 qts (3.5 L) drained out. The same as what the manual says for a change.
Thanks H tech!
Going by the idea that a 9 speed ZF is a nine speed, whether it's Jeep or a Honda.
Drive the vehicle around the block (no interstate driving temps needed).
Loosen the fill plug first,
drain the ATF out,
replace the drain plug (torque it to 32 ft/lbs,
pour in 3.5 qts plus another 100ml.,
torque the fill plug to 27ft/lbs.
I am going to diy. Do you recommend go for a drive and warm up the transmission fluid than do a drain and fill. I am going to take measurement of whatever come out& refill the same amount back in. Or perform when the tranny fluid is cold? Thank you for all your helpful videos!
Did you have to go VSA maintenance mode and cycle through gears?
You note that fill plug is an 8mm Allen bit, but that plug looks like it might require a torx bit. Maybe it wasn't replaced at prior service?
They're all 8mm Allen. This would be the first time it's getting replaced. It's just tight cracking the fill plug loose just be careful not to round them. I almost did is why it looks like that.
I’ve got a 21 Pilot. Should I just follow the maintenance minder and I should be good? Also, what common problems do you see with these? I heard rotor warping and the brake sensor switch failing are common problems. Thanks for your videos!
Yup just follow the maintenance reminder. I had customers ask how they know what maintenance they need to do and your vehicle tells you in the menu what is coming up. And if they decide to not do it you are able to not reset that service so it pops up again next time. I've seen cars that come in with all the services pop up on the screen when a customer just do oil changes. With any cars depending on how you drive you will warp rotors especially on big family vehicles where they get loaded up. I haven't seen brake switches fail. On the early pilots because of direct injection we replace injectors but here they extended the warranty to 10 years here. Don't see much on later pilots just the early ones. Pilots a solid vehicle.
@@theoffroadingmechanic Thank you for the information!
@@daniiltiganov2681 Don’t follow the maintenance minded.
Do your first trans service at 500 miles (gets the extreme levels of metal out) and the second at 10k.
Then after that, every 15k unless you are sever use (lots of driving or offer passing or towing).
Remember to do the trans filter every other change.
It’s always better to do the maintenance more often than recommended because these manufactures put extremely long intervals on them.
Subaru says tk never change the trans fluid, which is a mistake and not even congruent with recommendations for the same parts in difference countries..
Otherwise, follow the minder system, it’s a good bit of tech.
Instead of doing the gear shifting and temp monitoring, can you measure the quantity of your drain fluid and refill with the same amount?
What if it came under filled from the factory which does happen or the last person underfilled it or over filled it without pulling the level check plug.
Hi bro. Question when you were at the other dealership.what temperature did you check the transmission at for their transmission? Just curious. Thanks
On Hyundai? I think it was between 50 to 60 celcius
@@theoffroadingmechanic thanks
Why not just measure the fluid that you drain out of the transmission and put that exact same amount back in there?
What if it came underfilled from the factory. It's not like they level check every car they produce after running it. Just fill it with the specified amount and off the assembly line. Have tried draining into a measuring container and sometimes they have less than what the fluid capacity on paper.
same as the 90's hondas, 3 to 3.5 quarts of fluid.
The new Honda insight takes 2.2L of dw1
Is this same procedure for 2017 Mdx awd?
Same for the 9 speed
2016 pilot. Havent had the maintenance minder for this service. Last was done 65k (km) ago. What is the recommended mileage for this service?
I think the maintenance reminder shows up around 80k kms but most people skip it cuz the fluid is pretty expensive
@@theoffroadingmechanic thanks for the info. Another question for you if you dont mind, during a B maintenance minder do you check transfer case fluids?
Transfer case fluid gets replaced when the transmission fluid gets replaced. When the symbol 3 on the maintenance reminder and it takes less than a quart. The B is your oil change brake inspection and brake service and basically check everything on the inspection list. But at our dealership we do an inspection on every car that comes in except when a customer specifically says they don't want one.
Where do you connect the temperature meter?
Obd port. That’s a scan tool
Hi Is there a AT filter inline with the hose?
On the 6 speed there is don't think I notice one on the 9 and 10 I will have to check.
@@theoffroadingmechanicwhat did you find for the 10spd?
Is 150k miles too high for these 9 sp transmission? I would like to purchase a Pilot 2017. But is already 150k miles... Which by the age seems excessive....
I just bought one 175,000 seems fine
Putting new drain plugs is a waste of money. Thoses are over $30 each from Honda.
That dumb gear selector uses a special tool to hold it in neutral. Used it many times.
We have go jacks if we need to push it in to the shop
How do you switch it to neutral using that gear selector? Can I get that special tool? Do you have to hold it in particular position while someone pushing the car? I got into a situation where my pilot wouldn’t switch to neutral by itself
@Thesoul06 07AAA-TZ3A100. That is the part number. You put that on a little (1/4" long) shaft sticking out of the top of the transmission and turn it. You can see the shaft by looking down between the battery and engine cover. In a pinch you can just turn the shaft with some pliers but then you need a helper to hold it because it will return to park on its own.
I made a tool that is simply a handle that stays on the shaft at all times. To hold in in neutral I fabbed up a 5/32nd welding rod that goes down through a hole I drilled in the bottom of the battery tray (the top of the rod goes through the battery hold down bracket. To put in neutral you pull the rod up, move the handle over (rotates the shaft)and drop the rod through a hole in the end of the handle. Now if ever I need a tow we can put in neutral on the side of the road and not have the tow truck driver drag it up on the flat bed with the AWD wheels locked.@@Thesoul06
Will this work for a 97 passport
I don't think I've seen 97 passport before
What's the torque again ?
26 lb-ft for the 8mm allen
Accord 2.0t suck doing trans services
Yea the 10 speed is a pain to service.
@@theoffroadingmechanic Wait, so is the new 2023 Pilot with 10 speed vs previous 9 speed version, now also a pain to service?
