I did this and saved hundreds of $$$. Thank you Sir.
Awesome, glad it was helpful.
I wouldn't bother with changing the fill plug. It's at the top of trans case and will never leak. Honda engineers definitely dropped the ball on this one. The old crush washers worked well for decades. Think of all of the waste being thrown into the trash every 15K, plus another $50 for 2 plugs, which is an additional cost to the customer for nothing.
Agreed.
@@BCautosolutionsIn fact, there are 3 plugs! Drain, filler, and a plug for checking the oil level when changing! They are sold only in a set and it costs $ 50-55 !!! The metal bolt is framed with a rubber band on the inside of the head. After 90K mileage and removing the bolt, this rubber band loses its properties. And if you put the old bolt, then in combination with the pressure created in the box for shifting gears, the result will be oil leakage. This is especially dangerous for the drain hole! Perhaps the author of this video will tell me whether I am right or not, based on my experience, and how critical is it to install new bolts ???? I am now faced with this dilemma, because $ 55 for 3 bolts with rubber bands is fucking too much! It would be better to leave the previous model of the box - there are only 2 deformation washers that need to be changed and there is even a dipstick for checking the oil level, as well as 1 of the bolts is magnetic, for collecting shavings !!!! And yes, the previous one didn't have any kicks when shifting, like the ZF.
Thanks!👍
Thank you!
Thanks so much. Was hoping you’d do one of these!
I have a looooong list of videos to catch up on 😅
So I am wondering if your shop charges less for the drain and fill when the actual procedure calls to drain, fill, go in VSA maintenance mode, run vehicle through 1-4 gears 10 seconds each, put in park, run at 2k rpms to ensure torque converter is full, check fluid level at check plug with engine running and fill as necessary. Or is the rest just actually BS that they want us to do to charge more $$$ for.
We aren’t doing all of that. Sure the first couple ones we did, figure out how much fluid is required and repeat it onto the next one unless there is a leak.
Thanks man, very helpful. Do you recommend replacing the fluid every 60k miles or follow the MM on the zf9?
60k max for sure. MM is too lazy imo.
Should be every 30K👍
what would be the best way to do a non-powered flush? doing a drain and fill. Then disconnect one of the transmission hoses (cooler?) and with the car running, drain out 3 qt, turn off, fill 3 qt, then repeat until all fluid is clear. id probably skip VSA maintenance mode for the extra hassle. I think the total capacity on the 9hp48 is said to be around 10qt. I considered doing a drain and fill x3, but at 3.5 qt replaced per change, by the 3rd round 27.46% of the old fluid is still in the system. Wouldn't get to under 5% until drain and fill x7 which gets prohibitively expensive.
Honda says after the first drain and fill you replace it at half the interval so first one is 60k and then every 30k after that. With that being said, there is no need to replace all the fluid with new ones. The interval is determined that the fluid will be in spec before and after. Now if you wait until 100k miles to change it, a multiple drain and fill is recommended because the old fluid might be out of spec.
So you leave what's in the torque converter ? This procedure only changes half of the fluid.
Yes
Do I need running the engine when I check the oil level? Thanks!
No
@@BCautosolutions ZF service in the Netherlands, said to check the level at the side plug at the end with a cooled down ZF9 transmission. At which temperature do you check the level?
@@LB_D operating temps I forget the exact temps. We rarely see these.
Hi is there a filter replacement on that ZF? Thanks sir
Yes, in internal tho, requires trans removal and bell housing to be removed.
Is this the same procedure for an Acura MDX with the same ZF 9 speed ?
@@frankpaul3204 basically yes
So this is just a cold fluid drain and fill correct
@@cliffm8112 yes
When you add new oil ,I think you should start the car, run it until it is warmed up, go through all the gears, P, N, R, D couple of times, have the car running, unplug the level drain, if it is not leaking, you need to add more oil until it starts to leak...
Hey brother this will help me with servicing my dad’s pilot…. Btw his 2019 was shifting very hard and about and we did a fluid flush hoping it would work… and turns out they had a service bulletin for a flash I guess if ECU and when I tell you it drives so much better!!! Keep up the good videos I need to know how to change my air filter for my type S
Thank you! I’ll try to make a video on that when I change mine out (it’s a pain in the ass for no reason) 😅
Great informative video. You make it look so easy. I can tell by the way you work you are meticulous. Great job.
Thank you!
I was very hesitant to do this on my 2019 Odyssey EX but it was very simple. I should have done it earlier so I'll be performing the service again in about 15K miles.
This is probably one of the easiest out there 🫡. Your odyssey should have a shield but no biggie.
Thank you! Was very close to shelling out big $$$ at the dealer due to official procedure and at 52k miles. You confirmed what I thought and now feel confident in DIYing it.
Glad to help!
Do you ever flush the transmission or always drain and fill?
@@mburlingame9747 I personally only drain and fill. It’s been debated back and forth, but I believe the pressure from the “flush” can push debris into areas one would rather it not be. I also remove the battery cable to reset the transmission logic.
@@jcflorida Thank you! I appreciate the response. Just had a drain and fill on my Passport at the dealership. They gave me the option of drain and fill or flush. For the $350 difference, I decided not to flush and spent the money on a new battery that was getting pretty weak.
The zf9 in my cpo 2019 MDX didn’t make it past 53k miles
Sorry to hear. I have yet to replace one yet here at Honda if my memory serves me correctly
I usually do all the trans fluid myself but my 2021 Pilot has Honda Care extended warranty. Should I have the dealer do it to keep my warranty so I don't get denied someday. I am keeping this car for 10 years and I am sure the transmission will go out. :-/
Keep records that you purchased the fluid and document with pics and or videos.
Fluid Level on the zf9 can be 3.5 qts. plus an additional 100ml.
Jeep owners that climb hills have found that steep angles (on the hills) cause the tranny fluid to slosh away from its main tranny components. They add an extra 100 ml of fluid to compensate for these angles.
Good point
Great video! I'll be using this in near future for the wife's TLX 3.5.
Thanks dude!
I dont know you, first video i watch and your professionalism shows from miles. Thanks for this video and wish you the best. We need more mechanics like you
Thanks for your kind words.
I just had this done at Honda dealer on 17 Pilot Touring at 84.5k mi. It was done by prior owner at 49k miles at other honda dealer (have carfax record). The fill plug was completely stripped - had to spend $200 labor to have them get it out and new plug about $24. Atf fill was about $200 (1 hr labor) and another 48 for ATF3.1. so I'd NOT over torque that fill plug at all and i would replace the plug each time. I should have done this service, and will from now on- at 30k mi interval. Smoothed out the 9 AT ZF shifting now much better. IF i had tools and if i were DIYer i can see saving $200, but the risk to me stripping it or breaking something else isn't worth my peace of mind or time. But I will say I'm not using DCH honda (prior dealer record) where they left in a stripped plug and didn't replace that screwing the next customer (me) over. I bought it at 55k mi. Great video thank you.
Ugh I’m sorry to hear that. On the bright side it’s giving you positive feedback so that’s a plus. Thanks for sharing
My 2018 original Odyssey just notified me to have the gearbox service at 93K mile. I did my 2013 X5 Diesel at 100K miles two years ago with very similar steps since they both are from ZF Company. Thank You So So Much for posting this video.
Glad to be of service
1st change for 9 speed. Do you think i could resuse the drain bolt and fill plug for the 1st change? Or how many times could I realistically reuse them before changing?
@@ihar9975 yeah it should be fine. I wouldn’t reuse it more than 2 times if your torquing it correctly
Thank you! Got it 27 ft lbs.
@@ihar9975 ✅✅
🙏@@BCautosolutions
I would reuse the fill but the drain is kinda risky considering how expensive the fluid is.
Is there no trans fluid dipstick on these cars? I don't understand why manufacturers are going away from dipsticks (like Audi with no oil dipstick) I guess it's cost?
Correct, no dipsticks on basically anything post 2016 minus the 6at. They want you servicing them at the dealer.
No harm in having it serviced at the dealler. Quick Check fluid level only its good to have the dipstick.
I wold like to get a hold of some used drain plugs so I can experiment with machining off the o rings and replacing with copper crush washers. I could save myself and a lot of others a few pennies, as long as the car is out of PT warranty of course. It looks like they have a flat shoulder that would take a washer from the video.
My only concern with that is the thread count is less then a traditional drain plug. I’ll try to get a video comparing the two.
you are very clear and prideful in your work.. thank you for taking the time. Can you do the 2023 Pilot 10 speed :) .. and would it be the same drain and fill same amount? without going thru level check?
Thank you! Pilot 10 speed is slightly different. I will do one when I get the chance. In the meantime you can refer to my tlx type s trans service video I posted a few weeks back, it’s the same type of trans so process is the same. Thanks for support.
Very nice straightforward step-by-step love it.
Thank you
Good job thanks for your time and sharing your knowledg question ❓ this transmisiin has any filter ??❓ thanks
@@raulcampos8205 very welcome, not a serviceable one.
Brother your videos as well as your knowledge is a real life saver in keeping us out of the loop folks up to date on all the important Honda info. Thank you so much
Thank you! Love hearing that
I have a 2019 Pilot Elite w/ 84k miles. I've heard people using Valvoline Maxlife ATF instead of the Honda 3.1, would you recommend that or stick with OEM? Also, are you able to refill the ATF fluid from the dipstick insert?
I would stick to Hondas 3.1 fluid personally. There is no dipstick, just fill it through top hole
I was quoted over $500 at the honda and two acura dealers so $200 is a complete steal and would pay that in a heart beat if it was offered to me. I know someone below got it done for that price at the dealer. I appreciate this video so I can do it myself and save $400!
🙌
That's how dealerships stays in business, $200.00 dollars job is $500.00 at the dealership
Thank you for the videos! Great job, simple process and explanations. Wanted to ask how often do you recommend for drain and fill on a 2023 Ridgeline(no towing)?
Thank you! 9 at would be every 30k
Thank you!

Could you please also do one on 2.0T Accord 10AT. Love your videos.
Yes I will, in the meantime you can refer to my tlx type s trans service I posted a few weeks back. Similar idea. (According to us way easier tho 😅)
hello, can you do a video on a 2023 Honda Pilot trail sport transmission fluid change. Thank you
I’ll do as soon as I get the chance
I like your video its straight forward. I have the same model and top fill plug without the dipstick. I wonder if you would know why the dealership charges over $400 for this service? Even minus the fluid its still $200 plus cost.
Thank you. Labor rates at dealers are through the roof.
Great video!! Quick question: '17 Pilot Touring with the 9 speed follows this same procedure? And you say in other responses that the engine temp is not an issue, true? I'm very surprised that Honda puts it out there that there is a very involved procedure for the 9 speed. Scary!
Yes that’s correct. They try to complex things up to avoid diyers from doing it themselves sometimes I believe.
@hondamobilemechanic - Do you have any other DIY (fluid change) instructional videos for late model (23 or 24) Ridgelines? I am a novice DIY-er but watching your videos give me confidence to do more of the routine maintenance work. Thank you!
I am a prior owner of a 2016 Honda CRV EX-L which we loved and I am giving really serious consideration to purchasing a Ridgeline. A little nervous about purchasing a Honda Ridgeline after watching quite a few of your videos and given the VCM functionality…I live in Idaho and we travel throughout the West so lots of hills and mountains (although we don’t do any towing)…I appreciate your videos - I like each video I watch and am a subscriber to your channel!
Thank you for the kind words. I’m trying to add as many videos as possible diy ones included. Tbh we don’t see many issues with ridgelines. If you do purchase o would highly recommend getting Honda care!
Just bought 2015 Honda Accord v6. 66k miles. I notice at around 50 mph the trans seems to slip or a slight vibration while accelerating slightly, if I press harder on the accelerator it goes away. I will bring it in for trans fluid change. Just wondering if u have suggestions
See other response
Hey, how often should this service be done? 2016 pilot touring/elite
Every 30-60k max depends on driving conditions.
Wow! Great video with all of the necessary details and tips on little things like tweaking the torque wrench setting given use of extension. @hondamobilemechanic Love your channel and your content. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Thanks. Which is the best transmission for Gen2? 6-speed, ZF 9-speed, new 2024 10-speed?
Im going to go as it stands currently:
10at
9at
6at
I have a 2015 Acura tlx SHAWD advanced package with the 9 speed. I took my car to the Acura dealer to change the transmission fluid on the receipt it says Kit 2.0 dual clutch atf type 2.0. I emailed Acura client relations and they said atf type 2 is the correct fluid for my car. Should I bring the car back to the dealership? I thought my car used atf type 3 🤷🏾♂️
Yeah your trans definitely takes the 3.1 fluid. What the told you is wrong.
Another reason to not trust the STEALership!
Not all, but common to use wrong product, or cheaper stuff you would never know...
You need to find another place if they're trying you this!
I spoke to a Honda dealer mechanic and he said they never replace the fill plugs.
Again $30 per quart it’s your own risk.
I can tell you my invoice from just this past week did NOT include a drain plug and neither did the invoice from the previous owner. I'll ge getting a new one when I do the second change myself.
Like the videos. Does the dealer let you spend time doing videos at work? :-)
If it’s slow. If it’s busy then no.
Come on man you need to wait to every drop drains out before you put that that plug back in
@@Acura1NSX ✅
If it’s dripping it’s not that much fluid left.
@@jasonsong86 💯
In a perfect world should you warm up your truck before you do a transmission fluid change?
No, unless it’s single digits or colder then maybe but just to help the flow of the oil drain.
Trans fluids are usually pretty thin so no need to warm up.
Is this the same process for a 2022 Honda pilot?
Yes if it has the zf9 trans
what are some common tools honda tools i would need coming from expres tech to main shop tech or dispatch 2
I plan on making a video for that actually
Do you have video for transfer case and differential how to change the fluid?
I have a rear differential service on a tlx, it’s basically the same process. Working on a front transfer case service as we speak. Here’s the video for the rear: ua-cam.com/video/-zoJTQejBHQ/v-deo.htmlsi=FaLjptw0jGowsGyu
I am going to diy. Do you recommend go for a drive and warm up the transmission fluid than do a drain and fill. I am going to take measurement of whatever come out& refill the same amount back in. Or perform when the tranny fluid is cold? Thank you for all your helpful videos!
Doing it warmed up is always best imo
@@BCautosolutions I have a 2020 pilot elite, and it has only 20k mileage. Would you recommend changed transfer case, and transmission fluid. I did the rear differential at 10k when the reminder code display. Since I don’t drive it much. We do take long trip to florida. What is your recommendation on all the fluid as far as years or mileage? I like to do preventative service ahead. I trust your expertise. Thank you

What are your thoughts?
You need to service it. It’s just not that easy or profitable to do.
I think you need to find another mechanic. Depending on make and model of your Honda, code #3 should be coming up on your maintenance minder very soon. Mine came on at 80K kms on my 2020 Pilot.

A lot. The fluid is expensive and is most of the cost anyways
Trying $320 right now. I just bought a 2017 Pilot and went in for this thinking it was a complete replacement like Toyota does. I should have known when they told me the price and I was expecting it to be more that it was too good to be true. I'll do the next two myself to get a full overhaul as Honda calls it.
hey at what temp am I supposed to replace the fluid in my Acura tlx 3.5. also once done replacing do I have to do a ecu and transmission reset?
@Hondamobilemechanic
Just have it operating temp (usually 2 fan on/off cycles) no resetting needed
this is for a 9 speed right, push button???
Correct
Would you recommend doing transmission flush every 30-40k miles? Or should I just do drain and fill? Is it the same price or doing flush is more expensive? By the way i have touring 2.0T
Drain and fill every 30k

When you’re going to change it , and you don’t want to do the level proceder do you want the car to be cooled down or warm
Doesn’t matter, just measure what comes out and out back the same.
If you really want to be precise, wait until the old fluid cools down and then measure the capacity. In reality probably not that critical.
