  • Patagonia Lake State Park in Arizona is an incredible birding destination, home to many local bird species, and hosts many rarities such as Rufous-capped Warblers and Thick-billed Kingbirds. Learn about what it's like to bird there, and see if we're able to find our target species for the trip: The Rufous-capped Warbler. Thanks to Caden and Eric for joining us as well!

    Thanks to western bird specialist @Pauraque for pointing out that the bird at 9:17 is actually a Gray Hawk, not a Zone-tailed. Here's what appears to be the same bird, but in slightly better light from another checklist: ebird.org/checklist/S147279552

    We camped close to the trailhead for a week last winter. No rufous-capped warbs in winter. :( But some favs were: wilson's warbler, plumbeous vireo, northern beardless-tyrannulet, black-crowned night heron, green kingfisher. Got a photo of a sharp-shinned hawk lurking at waist-level off that muddy trail. It's one of the birdiest places I've ever been.

    I loved Patagonia Az spent most of my time in town and at Patton center for hummingbirds and finally found the Varied Bunting on Blue Heaven road hours before heading out of town Spent a few hours at the Patagonia lake and watched a monsoon in the distance the drive to the lake was especially beautiful

    We have been on that path twice prior to our latest trek in late April 2023 when we had a very scary encounter with a charging big black bull. We almost got trampled by the other bulls and cows fleeing from the running, snorting crazy bull. As he charged us I threw up my hand and shouted "No!". To my surprise he stopped. Do to the adrenaline surge I can't remember exactly what happened for several minutes after that. It is a great place to bird but the free roaming cattle, at least the big black one, can be hazardous.

    Very cool! I've been to the Paton Center for Hummingbirds & the Sonoita Creek preserve last spring but hope to return in mid April for a "deeper dive" into the area. I saw a ton of "lifers" on my last visit, so I'm stoked to check out Patagonia Lake! 🐦

    Be aware that many (if not all) of the Mexican Ducks in the US are hybrids. The bottom most one though looks pretty in range for 'pure' mexican so you're good to add at least one to your list.

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  4 місяці тому

      Yeah, the possibility of hybrids always makes it less satisfying even when you get one that seems “pure”

      @BadgerlandBirding  4 місяці тому +1

      It’s hard to recall, but I think we had fine cell reception there. It’s not in the middle of nowhere, the trails just feel like you are. I would just keep checking and if you start to lose it you could go back to an area where it’s stronger

      Great catch, buddy! It looked super dark in the field, but I was able to find a lighter picture of what appears to be the same individual and I think you're right. That'll be a relief to Nathaniel because he missed that bird and if it was Zone-tailed it would have been a lifer for him 🤣 Here's the bird: ebird.org/checklist/S147279552
