    I recently purchased the Rode Stereo Videomic X for use alongside my cameras for ambient, stereo audio. The point of this week's review of the microphones wasn't necessarily to perform a comprehensive test on the mics, but to test out the "noise floor" or lack there of, generated by these mics. This is important if you care about audio - because it's the subtle (yet irritating) hiss sound underneath all the audio the microphone is picking up.
    Well, the Rode Stereo Videomic X performed quite admirably, outperforming the XY mics on the Zoom H6 by a long shot! Also, with the +20 dB output gain controls, you're able to effectively eliminate any unwanted noise from a camera's internal preamps as well! If this sounds like a foreign language to you, you're not alone.

    Maybe the M O S T helpful and "to the point" review of the Stereo VideoMic X , throughout the whole internet.
    I was searching for such a comparison , for more than a year now.
    Honestly , i wasn't persuaded about the higher quality of the Rode X's mics in comparison with the XY Zoom's mics , up until you did that noise floor test .....
    After that test , i am like "Rode , just take my money" !!! :)
    Maybe an overkill , since i already have the ZoomH6 .... but still .... if you need to record stereo sound in an absolutely quite environment , like a piano concert , violin ...or anything similar , then Stereo Video Mic X is a must !
    Thank you very much for puting the time to make this video , and giving answer to
    every possible question i had. :D
    Keep up creating reviews !

    I like tests where the basic hiss noise in rooms is checked. It's most important when you make Videos in a silent ambience, e.g. little babies, and have a camera without ventilator so that, in the end, only the mic or the internal amplification can destroy it all. Thank you!!!

  • @aegeanlight7916

    H6 mics are shock mounted. You had a second shock mount for the "whole" H6. For the Røde you only had the shock mounts of the microphones.

    To be fair, the product description states that the Rycote mounts provide isolation from vibration as well as knocks and bumps, not shaking like a maraca in the hands of Thor. They are effective.

    Hi! Nice presentation, thank you! Of course, Rode SVMX is a first class mic! Maybe Audio-Technica BP4025 can beat it, maybe! But I'm surprised by the quality of the microphone on the Zoom H6! Wow! I have been using Zoom H5 for 3 years but I am afraid that the quality is not the same as the Zoom H6. All the best!

    Hey~ really nice review, I only have one question, what is the noise floor be like in comparison a rode videomic x plug in GH4 or some other camer(I have a BMPCC 4k myself) vs zoom H6's XY mic. As I notice during the last noise floor test, you plug videomic X into XLR plug of zoom H6. But as a normal use (via TRS), how will it be?

    I am a newbie to the world of sound and would be grateful if you could answer a question: I record video on my Sony A7iii of streams and rivers and want to add high quality sound to the video. I can't figure out the equipment I need to accomplish this result. I could use a RODE Stereo VideoMic X which seems to be the simplest answer but many people seem to attach Zoom F6 devices to their camera along with mics and other equipment. What kind of configuration or equipment would you suggest buying if I want to add very high quality sound to my videos of streams and rivers ? Is the Sennheiser MKH-416 the right mic for the job ( I keep reading it is the industry standard but I am pretty sure it is unidirectional so will that be a problem if I want to record streams and rivers in nature ). Thank you.

    How much difference between recording straight into cam and xlr into dedicated recorder?

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  5 років тому

      No difference in quality, substantial difference in noisefloor. Unless you have XLRs into the camera, there will most likely be a higher noise floor into the cam.

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  7 років тому +1

      That depends on your use. It's $80 less in price, but only has 2 XLR inputs as opposed to 4. The stereo mics are a very similar capsule but I've never tested them to the H6 side-by-side. Preamps on the H5 are definitely better than cheaper recorders but I'm not sure how the compare the the H6. What will you be using it for primarily?

    Question from a newbie: Do you think the Rode Stereo VideoMic X would make a great choice for a mic used when creating videos while hiking down a trail or would a shotgun mic be a better choice ? ( I am concerned the Rode Stereo VideoMic X would pick up too much noise from my moving feet and maybe even heavy breathing but I also love the benefits of that mic )

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  2 роки тому

      Depends! Are you narrating your hikes? Or just looking for natural sound? Dialogue is best into a mono signal, nat sound of a hike would sound awesome into the stereo

    Hi Oliver,
    Great review! If I wanted to record audience laughter at a comedy show, which mic would you recommend? I already have a zoom H5 with an XY capsule

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  5 років тому +1

      That is a wonderful mic for that - It is probably more able to withstand loud sounds as well!

    • @gillesmatheronpro
      @gillesmatheronpro 4 роки тому

      I've recently recorded ambiant sound of an audience during a live show, with built-in microphones of a Zoom H4n, and the sound seemed "compact". Kinda lacking dynamics and amplitude. I would put that on the small dimensions of the H4n capsules... and, as far as I know, the H5 has the very same ones (to be confirmed), however on a clip-on module.
      I'm seriously starting to consider the Mic X for this type of capture, its 133 dB max SPL and larger diameter capsules seem to make the cut. After all, sound is vibrations and pressions, so... the larger the "medium" (capsules, loudspeakers, panels, etc.) the more freedom/amplitude the restitution (probably) has.

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  5 років тому +1

      YES, totally - UNLESS you are trying to record someone's dialogue. I wouldn't recommend stereo for that. This is perfect for audio ambiance.

    how would one go about recording using the Stereo Video Mic X with a Zoom H6 or any zoom handymic?

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  5 років тому +1

      You could use the 3.5mm jack included with the stereo micX for either of those, or of course you could use mini xlr-xlr connections for the H6, but you'd have to buy those separate.

      chibot botchi these are cardioid patterned, very sensitive mics, so if the focus racking is loud, I’m sure they’ll pick it up. I assume it’s based on the quality of the lense, many canon lenses I’ve worked with are relatively silent when auto focusing. Hope that helps!

    You clearly dont understand what a noise floor is or how to measure it. You need a completely silent room to measure it. What you "measured" here (recorded without measuring, actually) is just ambient sound. Noise floor a measurement of noise - hum, buzz, fuzz, whirr, etc - in db, relative to the sound source.
