after around pg. 100, i was sold on The Name of the Wind. sooo good! and i agree, it's intimidating when you look at it, but once you start, it's impossible to put down.
Holy crap, Reagan, let's just sit and cry together over Between Shades of Grey. That ending... *sob* I didn't see it coming, but it was so amaaaaaaazing.
How was the fourth one? Is it better than the first three? I want to continue but I didn't think they were that great. The first two I gave three stars and the third, four stars.
I'm totally passionate about Historical Fiction so I hit the button and bought Between Shades of Gray. It fits my reading style, despite me being eclectic. I love your reviews I feel like you put so much emotion in it. Thank you very much!
the rest of us just live here is ome of my favorite books ever written. as a person who struggles with ocd and other mental health issues, this book means so much.
I'm sooooo glad you like Stolen Songbird it became one of my favorite books this year and I wish more people would read it because it really is a great book!
Yay!!!! Name of the Wind is soo amazing! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the second book. And Between Shades of Grey is definitely on my TBR now.
I felt very similarly about The Rest of Us Just Live Here (and I reviewed it). I agree, the premise was so much stronger than the execution. I wanted so much to love it, but I just couldn't quite get there. I also have Between Shades of Grey sitting in my TBR pile for going on 3 years...I really need to read it. AND I really need to read The Name of the Wind...everyone keeps telling me how amazing it is. I should just listen and read it!
Loved loved loved Name of the Wind. Currently reading The Wise Man's Fear and it is just everything you could ever want from a sequel. Rothfuss is such a talented author.
I'm so glad you finally read The Name of the Wind!!! It really is one of my favorite books after everything Brandon Sanderson has written. Rothfuss is hilarious and ingenious with his writing and it truly is a pleasure to read. Can't wait until you get to the second book!
I read Between Shades of Grey this summer, and the first thing I thought of after I had finished was "I wonder if Regan has read this". I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I've heard you talk about The Name of the Wind before and never really took an interest to it, but you intrigued me (as usual) and it's the newest edition on my wishlist!
I'm so glad you finally read The Name of the Wind! Such a brilliant book. Patrick Rothfuss's writing is indeed something special :) I love how you describe and review books. You make every viewer want to read your recommendations xD (at least me anyway). Keep up the great energy!
I totally agree with you about The Rest Of Us Just Live Here. I gave it a 4/5 stars because it is a solid book, but just not quite there like a piece was missing. I definitely agree with you on Carry On as well! The Name Of The Wind intimidates me sort of...
I've never read or watched Harry Potter (I know ugh I'm fixing this next year) but I still really, really enjoyed Carry On so nope, I don't think it relies on Harry Potter as much. I think it's more of how it plays on the Chosen One trope which is really the way Rainbow Rowell wrote it. But overall, I think Carry On can stand alone and a separate book from Harry Potter.
Exactly what I thought! I have read HP and Carry On does have a lot of "inside jokes", but it is a book based on HP, so it was supposed to have that feel of "I've seen this before"! But I did not feel like you would have to have any knowledge on HP to understand the story, Rainbow Rowell did a great job on explaining ~the past~ of the book to get us where we picked up from.
I've never read Harry Potter and I can't recall what I watched from the movies because it really didn't haunted me down. I feel like misplaced. People keep telling me that I need to read Harry Potter in order to get Carry On, but I truly believe, at least from what I've heard about this book, that it can stand alone, even if it is made to pump up a nostalgic feeling inside Harry Potter's craziest fans.
+Duda Carneiro I completely agree! I'm a massive Harry Potter fan which is part of what attracted me to Carry On but I definitely wouldn't say you need to have read that series to enjoy this novel. Besides, there are plenty of other books out there that are clearly inspired by HP that haven't interested me. The thing about Carry On that I really loved is that the Chosen One isn't straight and how it ties our world with the magical one so seamlessly. So don't worry if you've never read HP or you just couldn't get into it - you can still enjoy Carry On!
+Randomandlovely I totally agree with you! In Fangirl, it seemed like the Simon Snow books basically were Harry Potter, until they were compared to HP at that one point. But reading Carry On, the differences to Harry Potter really stick out! The way magic works and how they all use modern technology makes the world unique and sets the universes apart quite clearly, I think.
The Name of the Wind is so good and its sequel is even better. They seem to be so huge and they might be intimidating at first but the second you start reading you just fly through them. The writing style is amazing and the story is so interesting. I could rant about the awesomeness of these books forever... (:
Something about Carry On rubbed me wrong while I was reading it and I ended up putting it down. I think you were spot on. It relies on HP too much and I think I'm too much of a Harry Potter snob to enjoy it.
+Jessyca Z I was the same way. It wasn't just that it was like HP though, I just found it slow as well. There wasn't much...to it. It just seemed to be Simon endlessly complaining about Baz missing like okay we get it! lol So I couldn't really get further than half way. sigh
+Jessyca Z Ditto, it rubbed me the wrong way, although I was totally up for the Harry Potter riffing. However, the poor use of British really irritated me. I lived there for 4 years and my husband is English, so I feel like I am pretty familiar with the culture. There were so many instances that just seemed poorly researched. Like, British school is out for 6 weeks in the summer, not 3 months. And they use the word "cab" rather than 'taxi.' They don't make cookies at Christmas, it's all about mince pies and other Victorian-style desserts. There were enough mistakes to jar me out of the story, and made the other British-ish parts feel like they had been forced in to show 'this is the UK.' I just never bought the world or characters as British, so it was hard for me to get pulled into the story. I just saw School Library Journal named "Carry On" one of their best of 2015, and I was feeling very alone in my lack of connection with the story--glad to see I'm not the only one! :)
+Jessyca Z So even if this rubbed you the wrong way, would you recommend her other books? I'm on the fence about Carry On. You either love it or hate it from what I can see. So, I thought I'd maybe try a different book.
I'm definitely sold on Between Shades of Gray. It's one of the oldest books on my TBR and I've never been interested in it but hearing you talk about it has piqued my interest
The Name of the Wind was one of my favorite books that I read this year. It's truly amazing. Regan, there's another book from Patrick Rothfuss, it's called The Slow Regard Of Silent Things, this book is really different from The Name of Wind, it's about Auri and her life deep below the University. You should check it out.
I'm forcing myself not to read The name of the wind until we AT LEAST have a release date for Doors of stone! I already know I will love it and I'm not ready to join all the waiting fans.
I read Between Shades of Gray for Battle of the Books a couple years ago, and it was Amazing! At the time, I didn't really understand it, so I think it's time for a re-read.
I read The Rest of Us Just Live Here this month, too, and I completely agree with you! It was a really good book to read, very interesting, but it could have had more to it. I wish it wasn't so focused on its contemporary aspect, but it's still pretty great!
I read Love, Rosie, Scarlet, Cress, Fairest, Saga V.1, and Ready Player One. Ready Player One was my favorite of the month and I absolutely flew through it! I have been hesitant about starting the Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy since the last book still has no release date yet (after 4 years) but I just read some of his comments on Goodreads and he is hilarious. I will be reading this eventually for sure but I might just wait until there is a release date. Cant wait to hear your opinion on the second one.
I love Stolen Songbird! The sequel was great, too! I have a feeling this series is going to take off this year because more people are reading it, and everyone seems to like it!
I'm reading a book called Above us Only Sky by Michele Young-Stone that has portions of a family history in Lithuania during the same time. It's Historical Fiction/Magical Realism.
Wow, I actually didn't know that Between Shades Of Gray was about the exportation of lithuanians in WW2. I'm definitely interested in the book now, because the country I come from (Latvia) also had these exportations of people to work camps in Siberia, and around 15 000 people were sent there in one month back in 1941. I'm definitely interested in this book now!
I read Inhuman (Kat Falls), The Testing (Joelle Charboneau I think is how you spell it), and Tandem (Anna Jarzab). I'm pausing my TBR to read Let it Snow (Maureen Johnson, John Green and Lauren Myracle), Dash and Lily's Book of Dares (Rachel Cohn and David Levithan) and My True Love Gave to Me (Lots of popular authors, edited by Stephanie Perkins). Okay then
I've had a pretty good reading month too! I read The Rithmatist earlier this month and I enjoyed it immensely but I had no idea it wasn't a standalone and the sequel comes out on 2017! I MEAN WHAT?!! Then I marathoned Rebel Spring and Gathering Darkness. Had a two week reading slump then read The Archived and The Unbound (YET AGAIN A CLIFFHANGER BECAUSE WHERE IS THE THIRD BOOK?!!!)
Welcome to the love for The Name of the Wind. Best book evaaaaaaa!!!! Also, I´m pretty sure there´s a vid where Patrick Rothfuss says how to pronounce Kvothe´s name.
Unfortunately, I did not get to read as much as I would have liked. I have too many books on my TBR list, but I'm tempted to read The Name in the Wind right now!
My fav Troll music is In the Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg. In it, Peer Gynt, a human, is chased & caught BY TROLLS! Who needs Vamps, Elves, Dwarves, Ents, Hobbits, Werewolves, etc. when you can have...trolls.
I read all four of the Throne of Glass books, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The School of Good and Evil and am still currently reading Wuthering Heights, Steve Jobs and The Bronze Horseman :)
Okay, you sold me on The Name of the Wind. I tried reading it last year, then I came 30 pages and couldn't anymore...but since you said it gets better at a point I'm gonna try again ;-)
This month I have read Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman (amazing!!!), The Illegal by Lawrence Hill (good story but the writing was a little on the nose) and The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins (well-written and definitely enjoyable but it's by far the weirdest book I have ever read but I kinda loved it!)
Have you read The Novice? I'm reading it at the moment and I don't know why but the school in it reminds me a little bit of a more YA version of the school in The Name of the Wind. It's a really great fantasy debut though so if you haven't picked it up, I recommend.
I really want to read The Rest of Us Just Live Here. I haven't read anything by Patrick Ness, but I think that one is going to be the first. I started The Name of the Wind so long ago, but I put it down and I can't get myself to pick it back up again. It was too slow-going for me. I don't know, it wasn't for me.
The plot of "The Rest of Us Just Live Here" seems so so sooo interesting!! But, I've never read any of Patrick Ness's writings so I feel like it wouldn't be very well executed like you said but it sounds so cool! Name of the Wind seems so good! And the rating is just ggreat so I think I'm going to try to pick it up in 2016 :D
I actually have read the first couple of chapters of The Rest of Us Just Live Here, and it was REALLY confusing and weird. I agree with Reagan, the premise hooked me, but the actual writing & plot was boring. I wouldn't really recommend it, but some people have enjoyed it, so... I just wanted to share that with you, in case you were thinking about picking up the book. :)
+Bibliosaurusrex I loved The Rest of Us. The characters were really compelling and they all felt so real. And it was hilarious. I would completely recommend it. I don't think the premise was stronger than the story at all.
YES YES YES THE NAME OF THE WIND!!!!!! Iiiii love that book SO much. The second one is (according to me) EVEN BETTER. Holy mother I can rant about the beauty of these books for ever. Do let us know when you've read the second one. I'd love to hear your thoughts! :D
+Evan Dicesare I think it's important to keep in mind that we are all entitled to our opinions and not to shame those we happen to disagree with. Especially when it comes to books, something we all love xxx
I really enjoyed Carry On too. I really liked the characters and the magic system as well. I actually didn't mind that it relied on Harry Potter but I didn't give it a full 5 stars either because I thought the beginning of it dragged.
+sandyreadsalot that's really interesting because I loved it, but thought the ending was not as good as the rest of the book. I really enjoyed the first parts, though!
Q: Is there a rule regarding what to eat during reading? I bought sweetart soft chews thinking they could get me alert enough to start reading more in the evening, but they don't do that, so yeah I just thought snacking on candy or something helps to be more attentive to reading..😆 crazy.
I also read The Rest of Us Just Live Here in November. And it's also my least favourite Patrick Ness book. But I have to give him credit for the story about Satchel (if that's what she's called), it was hilarious. I've read the first half of The Name of the WInd (a loong time ago), and I really liked it. I just think Kvothe is too perfect (yes, he is flawed, but ... he annoyed me). But I really loved the story, and I want to start over. I only stopped because I picked up something else and forgot about it.
I have yet to read Carry On so I can't really say my thoughts on your idea about how it relies on Harry Potter for people to understand but this idea is present, I would say, in a majority of books we read whether we notice it or not. Authors write with other writers in their head. Look at The Road by Cormac McCarthy that book, a major part of that book is all the allusions the author weaves into the storyline. So I think it would be a good thing if the author references other author's work but I can still see where you are coming from
I read Between Shades of Grey last year I think and I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it and well, it broke me, too. It was, as you say, heartbreaking. sigh
About "Between shades of Gray" Lithuania was Part of Poland along with Belarus and Ukraine. Poland at that time was like U.K. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/66/Rzeczpospolita_voivodships.png
Between Shades of Gray is one of my favourite books of all time! Beautiful, beautiful and painfully heartbreaking.
Between Shades of Gray has been on my shelf for agesssss. You're inspiring me to want to finally pick it up.
after around pg. 100, i was sold on The Name of the Wind. sooo good! and i agree, it's intimidating when you look at it, but once you start, it's impossible to put down.
Between shades of gray is one of my all time favourite books, I'm so glad you loved it too!!
Between Shades of Grey has been on my reading list for the longest time! Your review has sold me - I'm finally gonna pick it up.
Between Shades of Gray was beautiful! Someone in my class has recommended it to me and I was glad that I picked it up.
Holy crap, Reagan, let's just sit and cry together over Between Shades of Grey. That ending... *sob* I didn't see it coming, but it was so amaaaaaaazing.
Between Shades of Grey is one of my favorites - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I finally started the Percy Jackson series and am on the 4th book now!
+Holly Hearts Art Yayyyyy!!
+Holly Hearts Art same! im about to start the 4th one and im loving this series!
+Holly Hearts Art Yes! Welcome to the fandom! Which god is your parent btw? Do you already know? :D
How was the fourth one? Is it better than the first three? I want to continue but I didn't think they were that great. The first two I gave three stars and the third, four stars.
I´m so glad that you finally read The Name of the Wind, I read it this year and its sequel and omgggg SO GOOD.
I'm totally passionate about Historical Fiction so I hit the button and bought Between Shades of Gray. It fits my reading style, despite me being eclectic. I love your reviews I feel like you put so much emotion in it. Thank you very much!
SO glad you finally read the name of the wind! one of my absolute favourites! :D I just got carry on last weekend and am excited to get into it :)
the rest of us just live here is ome of my favorite books ever written. as a person who struggles with ocd and other mental health issues, this book means so much.
The name of the wind is AMAZING! Waiting impatiently for the third book to come out!
Between Shades of Gray is sooo good!! And The Rest of Us Just Live Here sounds very interesting :)
OH MY GOD please read Between Shades of Grey! It is absolutely fantastic and VERY moving. Also, it's super short, so it won't take you long.
Loved loved loved Name of the Wind. Currently reading The Wise Man's Fear and it is just everything you could ever want from a sequel. Rothfuss is such a talented author.
oh my God you finally read Between Shades of Gray. I feel you, it was amazingly tragic
I'm so glad you finally read The Name of the Wind!!! It really is one of my favorite books after everything Brandon Sanderson has written. Rothfuss is hilarious and ingenious with his writing and it truly is a pleasure to read. Can't wait until you get to the second book!
Between shades of gray is one of the best books I've read so far!
Between Shades of Grey is absolutely phenomenal and really needs more recognition
My favorite book in November was Daughter of Smoke & Bone. It was so good.
So excited that you finally read The Name of the Wind! I read that book a year ago and just loved it so much and knew that you would too :)
Aah, I am so happy you enjoyed The Name of the Wind! I listened to the audiobook and loved it!

TheLuluTrue
Exactly! :)
I'm so happy that you finally picked up The Name of the Wind!!! Isn't it an amazing book!!!!?
It just seemed to be Simon endlessly complaining about Baz missing like okay we get it! lol So I couldn't really get further than half way. sigh
KatTheBooknerd I felt bad because so many people LOVED it, so i'm glad I'm not alone! haha
yes definitely the beginning sucks. I hated the book, but pushed through. it gets much better the moment you start getting Baz POV at around page 160
This was a great video! I completely agree about Name of the Wind. I'm half-way through and it's amazing!
I'm planning on reading The Name of the Wind as my first book of 2016.
Your videos are great! Im looking foward to read The Name of the Wind! Thanks for your reading recomendations!
Stolen Songbird sounds really interesting .Between Shades of Grey sounds fascinating! I'm definitely going to pick it up.
The Name of the Wind was one of my favorite books that I read this year. It's truly amazing. Regan, there's another book from Patrick Rothfuss, it's called The Slow Regard Of Silent Things, this book is really different from The Name of Wind, it's about Auri and her life deep below the University. You should check it out.
always love when you say "our main character"
Also just finished reading the Mistborn trilogy and would like to thank you for the recommendation.
Wonderful, as always! I get way too excited when you upload a video! You made my Monday brighter! What lipstick are you wearing? It's gorgeous.
The book I absolutely loved this month was tiger lily!! It was soo good. I definitely agree with everything you said about carry on.

Ooh I will have to read The Name of the Wind now after that great review! It sounds amazing! How awesome that you had such a great reading month! :)
YES! Between shades of Gray!! Amazing, phenomenal book!!!
I read The Rest of Us Just Live Here this month, too, and I completely agree with you! It was a really good book to read, very interesting, but it could have had more to it. I wish it wasn't so focused on its contemporary aspect, but it's still pretty great!

I LOVE your wrap ups! and of course all of your other videos🦄😉
I liked The Rest of Us Just Live Here. But for me any book that was going to follow up More Than This was doomed because I loved that sooooo much.
I have Carry On and can't wait to read it.

You finally read The Name of the Wind yaaaaay! I'm so happy you did!

I'm so proud of you for finally reading The Name of The Wind!
THE NAME OF THE WIND!!!
Glad you read Name of the Wind! The audiobook is amazing too. He does write really well :)

im still trying to finish the queen of the tearling, november was a really busy month for me and the beginning of december has been just as crazy
I want to read Stolen Songbird so badly! It sounds so awesome!

Thank you so much for commenting that! I'll definitely keep that in mind :D
I'm halfway through The Final Empire and I'm LOVING it! 🙌
Have you read The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken? If not I recommend it. It's one of my favorites
"Carry On is not as good as Harry Potter people, geez"
Could you please tell that to Kat? 😂
+Hermione Granger No she is not...
+Evan Dicesare if anyone ever agree on that, they must get their brain checked. lmao
+Evan Dicesare I think it's important to keep in mind that we are all entitled to our opinions and not to shame those we happen to disagree with. Especially when it comes to books, something we all love xxx
still love between shades of gray 💘
I really enjoyed Carry On too. I really liked the characters and the magic system as well. I actually didn't mind that it relied on Harry Potter but I didn't give it a full 5 stars either because I thought the beginning of it dragged.
+sandyreadsalot that's really interesting because I loved it, but thought the ending was not as good as the rest of the book. I really enjoyed the first parts, though!
I totally agree with the Carry On part!
Q: Is there a rule regarding what to eat during reading? I bought sweetart soft chews thinking they could get me alert enough to start reading more in the evening, but they don't do that, so yeah I just thought snacking on candy or something helps to be more attentive to reading..😆 crazy.
i love all your videos and all these books sound amazing!
Have you ever read Exodus by Leon Uris? I have a felling that you would like it. Its one of my favorites books 😁
So I think it would be a good thing if the author references other author's work but I can still see where you are coming from
your videos are the best! you are my favorite booktuber

Name of the Wind will probably be a project for next year
Yay the name of the wind!!! I love it so much :)
