Just starting fly fishing today. Don't really need to tie my own but by god does that look fun. Any one that ties, could you tell me practically how much it would be to tie your own? Just a general number to get at least 10+ unique flies and all the the equipment used?

@@Madriveroutfitters Oh sweet. Will do, already subscribed yesterday. You guys have a criminally low sub count for the quality of content you put out.

I am doing just what you are suggesting. I wanted to be able to tie flies to use in salt water for bonefish and tarpon. I bought all the tools and enough material to make about 50-75 flies. My total outlay was about $300, most of which was in the vise and a couple tools. I estimate buying materials for the flies I am tying in small quantities (not volume discounts) to be between $1.50-$2.00 per fly. I have tied a handful of "cockroaches" and "gotchas" so far and your assessment is correct, it is a lot of fun. It is taking me 15-30 minutes per fly but Brian and Ryan both independently said with experience I should be able to do 6-10 per hour. Mad River has a couple classes in fly tying that are inexpensive, but my travel schedule isn't lining up with them so I took two private lessons from Ryan to get going. UA-cam looks like another easy path.
