I've never knew how much goes into a transmission before until now when I saw this video. I'm amaze at much stuff goes into building a transmission and designing them. Thank you very much for making great video such as this for newbies like me to learn from. Keep up the great work.
"I have comment" "sell your videos to the HS shop classes" You got me to watch and learn a lot more about manual transmissions. Watching Americas small business showcasing all their products and there all versions made it a great video.
I've been trying to get my books in vocational school shop classes as well as videos for years. For some reason the bureaucracy is incredible and it just never happens. My publisher is more than willing to work with schools but unfortunately they are not proactive with the situation.
Just today I was lucky enough to find your video's.. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and making these great video's.. Transmissions have never been my forte, but you make them look simple! I may just have to do some playing..
You should make one of these videos every time something new comes out. This is awesome! Don't ever feel like you're boring us by talking to us about this stuff. Your wealth of knowledge is incredible and inspiring!
4:30 It is common in the heavy truck business to have 2 counter gear sets. Some Mack trucks have 3. 28:00 I did hear that when Ford decided to buy transmissions from China, it was a disaster.
Twin Counter shaft Transmission Fuller Truck Transmissions Kalamazoo MI came out with that in about 1963. It was such a Great idea that Eaton bought them.. Mac even has a 3 Counter shaft Transmission ..
Yes. There is a video I have on this channel visiting Mid West Truck which has now merged this month with S&S truck. The rebuilding area is cool to see
Really interesting video, ive been getting my head round gearboxs and your videos help alot. Great to see dog teeth interface on gears, a mix of straight cut and helical gears and how a sequential box works. The brief insight into a f1 gearbox was awesome. I was wondering how different they would be. Same principles but just a skinny alternate arrangement. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Nice showing, thanks for sharing your experience, everytime I watch your stuff I learn something new, it's take me a long way also as an upcoming gearbox builder
What Skyline does that trans belong to? I don't remember seeing that type of transfer case for the front wheels on a Skyline. In any year. I don't think it's for the new R35 GTR.
Idk if you still make these videos, but tons and tons of engine videos out there, but your stuff is just perfect simplifies and clears a lot of questions i had thank you
Awesome video, I love that engine oil filter! I worked on an ARCA team from the mid 90's until 2009, our first car just had a relatively stock Super T-10. As we stepped up our equipment, we had Jericos and last transmissions were the Tex Racing T-10s. The GSRs in your clip are sexy as hell, as are the Hightowers! How would they do on the street, in place of the M20 I now want to sell? Haha
+Jim Heiberger Thanks for watching. Dog ring boxes usually end up getting hammered to death on the street. The new M22 line I build is pretty competitive on the street and track.
+GearBoxVideo yeah I figured there must be a reason, same with that sequential box. Do you offer a shorter first M22 gear, comparable to the M20's 2.52? My Muncie is in a 4100lb (w/me in it) 3.73 geared C10.
I learned allot from all the various booths you stopped at!!! Thank you for taking the time to share. By chance, have you explained in any of your other videos the actual shifter box, that the handle / knob runs down in to works?... I am still making my way through all your content, so have no clue if you have covered how they control convert the knob actions into differently controlled linear actions... Especially like the last one in this video where one was on top of the other... But, I also respect the fact that those may be trade mark secrets by the various manufactures there?.. Driving me nuts trying to figure out how those are gated and racked flawlessly and most importantly, precisely... Thank you for the video, this one was even more enjoyable that the last convention show you posted, which was great.in its own right, but this, you really stuck the camera lens in there for me to see... I amp'd up and heading to the shop to play... content like this is inspiring... Dru
Too little or too much clutch release can be dependent on the length of your release bearing. You just can't swap bearings around. A bearing that is too long can cause your clutch to over center from having to much throw. A bearing that is too short can cause your clutch to have a release issue because you have too much free play. When I do an installation I will usually mock up the clutch bell housing, clutch fork, and release bearing to see how this throw is working in relationship to the clutch installed.
Any thoughts on the G35MR? I've got a 2006 Mazda 3, grinds when I put it in reverse or third (I can baby it in sometimes, but it's pretty inconsistent). I think it probably could use a rebuilt but never done anything near that involved before.
Hey thanks for the cool insights into these transmissions. Could you please explain one thing to me though? What do those teeth on the Albins synchros do that protects shift forks?
I’ve got a 63 Falcon with a 347 with a Mikes Transmission super duper 700 R4. I ran that (first) trans a few hundred miles and it failed, sent it back to Mikes, it wasn’t set up properly (on my end), got it back, was told by my mechanic, “no problem” just a few miles and guess what, problem. I don’t trust the tranny, want to go 4 speed, I’m driving a money pit, just venting. Suggestions?
I have a 1995 Chevy S 10 manual transmission 4.3 L for my V6 five speed what transmission can I get upgrade to high-performance thank you roc your videos from my view keep up the good work
+Liberty Carpet Care If it is a T5, G-Force transmissions makes upgraded gearsets. The cost is expensive and in my opinion you are better off trying to convert to a Tremec TKO transmission.
Great video. We went to the 2015 show just a few weeks ago. The transmission vendors are really beginning to push the envelope in terms of weight, durability and technology. CNC precision has come to even the most mundane of transmissions like the three speed Saginaw. Just blows the mind.
We certainly have been impressed with its overall durability. Key to its durability is proper engine alignment and driveshaft angles. I still get the odd 3 speed case that can crack a front mount ear, but that's just the reality. We honestly don't magnaflux the case because, the transmissions are cheap to build and replace. The reality is that too keep up with the Jones's, guys are now spending thousands and stuffing high dollar low weight reciprocal parts into the stock housings (rules) and like it or not, be legal. It's driving a lot of us crazy. Some teams are experimenting with custom gear sets, 1st; 1.23, 2nd; 1.16 and finally 1:1. I run both a 3 speed and Muncie 4 speed with the Muncie a little more durable and getting parts at lower cost. But we are falling behind in the transmission war. Hence my initial comment. Now I know why. This year's PRI really opened my eyes into what is now possible. I just can't afford it. Makes me think I might as well buy my own CNC machine and make all the custom parts myself. My class simply can't afford $5-10,000.00 transmissions! But I know some guys are really spending that kind of money.
I'm looking at getting a T56 Magnum which is wayyyy ahead of my AutoGear M22W, which is so much better than an original Muncie. These transmissions in this vid make the Magnum look like a piece of junk. I've always wondered how race cars can have drivetrain losses of only 6-8% when a very good street car might be 16-18%, this video helps me understand why. Thanks for sharing this!
i was thinking way back when i was a kid and my 69 chevelle's clutch pedal only travled about 2 inch's never any prob.my now 79 camaro travles prob 5" just like to shorten the travel. love your chanel,Tim
Hey purchased your book on how to rebuild performance transmissions, awesome read, gone through it 3 or 4 times. I have a '68 mustang with a 351w that I am building to be a daily driver, I want to yard the C4 and put a stick in but can't decide on an overdrive trans. Toploader with gear vendors seems complicated, tko600 would be perfect but it seems to be plagued with shifting problems, T56 is too big and starting to get too expensive for me. What would you recommend for a overdrive manual? handle at least 550hp and shift good at 6800rpm. Just saw McLeod is coming out with a muscle car 5 speed also, any experience?
The Mcleod unit is T5 based and not suited for your Horsepower. Some people are saying it is Mopar A833 based, it is not. Just a recased T5 with a longer countergear to add additional support. It uses a stock T5 gear profile. Richmond gear in my opinion makes the best 5 speed out there. There is a feature on it in this video. It comes with the shifter,
GearBoxVideo Emailed Mcleod about their new muscle car 5 speed and they said that aside from the case they made, the gear sets are their own design also? found some good pictures of the tranny on Dragzine and it looks like the main shaft is supported by a casting in between 3rd and 2nd gear? Not sure what the weak links are on T5s, never had one but always heard they are weak for anything over 350hp. Like the idea of not having to hack up floor pans.
Ryan Madden Its a T5 based design. In fact all the gears are direct copies of T5 2.95 ratio gears. The cluster was elongated to add addtional support. In reality the center to centers and tooth profiles are the same. This would make a good driver, but is not something I'd recommend for performance use.
can a 833 3 speed od trans be turned back into a standard 4 speed ? by changeing the 3 - 4 gears back to normal . i like these videos you do are great .
That's incredible. Here in France almost no one want to open a gearbox to repair synchro, ghey just junk it and buy an other one. In usa there are some show where dozens of high performance gearbox are laying around, answering random customers etc... You american are very lucky on the car scene.
+NickLiang They never will say what team's stuff is on display. In fact it was difficult for me to even get some video! Most of the cases I have seen are all carbon fiber and the sliders and rails are all titanium.
Question this neighbor is a "Ford transmission specialist" Everyone goes to him for not just transmission but repair/mods etc, he seems to be real good. My question is can he also do TR-6070? Are transmission like oil change where if you can do one then other cars are pretty much similar. Or are there "gotcha" or things that he needs to know/learn outside of Ford? Trying to save a few bucks if I break the tranny when I drag race it, but also want the job to be done at almost 100% since I drive it hard etc, and don't want no accidents while shifting etc. Thank you ! (stock and not modified)
33:35 about RPM not HP? not 20K RPM anyway and 750 - 800 HP from normally aspirated engine w/ insane environments and another 250 via hybrid albeit transmitted elsewhere. What other category races at higher HP levels? Also must last then 5 - 7 races w/o penalty I think back then. At that weight - amazing! Merc just touched 50% conversion of energy from its fuel. Unreal!
No, what I was saying that these transmissions shift at extreme RPMs the cars are super light.... So if you took this same transmission and put it into 454 chevelle and dumped the clutch at 7500 rpm, you'd break it . BTW they make the current transaxles for Nascar now. Take a look at them in my 2022 PRI video and you can see the size difference
It is interesting to see that there are specialty uses for manual transmissions in racing applications. Also a number of these racing transmissions use dog teeth instead of synchromesh for faster shifting. For regular use automobiles, manual transmissions have almost completely died out in the United States.
David Grisez I know man. Manual transmissions are being phased out by tap shifts and paddle shifters. I guess it's too difficult for these yuppies to shift a manual while sipping their cappuccino and playing with their cell phone.
Can you maybe show off some Transmissions that can be used street cars that are daily drivers but pushing out 500+ Horsepower?? Also I just found your channel and subbed. Great videos man
You don't seem to cover import transmissions, but given the popularity of the BMW e46 for drifting I think it could be a good business opportunity. I've been told that Getrag doesn't sell parts so if you can find a mfg to supply you with custom parts and put together a series of how-to videos, it might become a decent mail-order income stream.
I could swear I saw some synchro units ... does NASCAR use both pure dog rings and synchro? Seems like synchro units would be too slow and "clunky" during shifts.
Nice video! These manufacturers run straight cut gears instead of quieter helical gears so they don't have as many problems with the case. Helical cut gears put a lot of thrust in the case. All of them are going to break! Period. Oh, and they all recommend special oil! I wonder who made a piece of metal that only one oil can work with?
Neapolis it depends on the application most Street Transmissions with synchronizer rings I use a GL4 oil from driven racing oils. Composite rings take specific oils based on ring material being used
No, let me explain and then tell me what you think. Companies rate Torque based on a life factor, not a static load. So you can exceed the rating but possibly shorten the overall life of the transmission. Different transmissions are designed using different algorithms to arrive at this hypothetical figure. So no two transmissions rate the same in a particular application. A transmission sits in between the engine and rear axle. The axle ratio plays an important part as to how much load the transmission sees. Most people obsessed with Torque ratings are street performance or drag racers where dropping the clutch, holeshots etc are a concern in regards to transmission life. So dropping the clutch against a 3.08 rear may break a transmission as opposed to a 4.11 axle ratio at the same RPM and rated engine Torque. There are many variables such as clutch, tire grip, axle ratio and tire size that all play into better service life. Experience is the best teacher related to application not some advertised rating for marketing purposes. We have serviced many broken transmissions that exploded way below their Torque rating. So if you are looking for a particular gearbox speak to the manufacturer to discuss your application and if it will be a correct match.
You don't need synchros any more. They are a waste of time. People just bang through the gears and tear them up. The design of a Motorcycle transmission is the way to go. They rarely fail.
Your forgetting a few things. Torque, load, and weight. The Motorcycle can work with dog type rings because there is very load working against the internal clutch rings. So for example in Nascar and pro street / pro stock drag stuff, yes they use dog type rings but they have to be serviced often. If it was a "waste of time" and probably money wouldn't you think every auto manufacturer that sells cars with manual transmissions would eliminate them?
I am not totally Disagreeing with you but most people don't give a syncro the chance to work. I have a 97 S10 that shifts very good but I drive it right. Most people just want it Right now. I like Synchronized Transmissions but as I said people will not give them a chance to work. Except for taking off I can shift without a clutch and never have a gear clash. Just my opinion. I appreciate your Videos Paul. You do a great job.
I've never knew how much goes into a transmission before until now when I saw this video. I'm amaze at much stuff goes into building a transmission and designing them. Thank you very much for making great video such as this for newbies like me to learn from. Keep up the great work.

Fantastic tour, Mate and not to mention the mouth watering, amazing engineering, thanks for the tour, enjoyed it very much, Goodonya, from DownUnder
bennockley Lots of good components and engineering from Downunder at that show!
The weight on some of these... amazing...
I could watch those gears all day.
Paul I do remember the feeling after the shows were over and you got back home it's hard to explain the feeling.
That dual counter gear Liberty transmission reminds me of the road ranger style transmissions in the semi trucks cool.

Very knowledgeable, appreciate your advice on the different manual transmissions at the PRI Show!

What Skyline does that trans belong to? I don't remember seeing that type of transfer case for the front wheels on a Skyline. In any year. I don't think it's for the new R35 GTR.
+30spooln Its for a truck version. Thats all I know.
That would have sense because it looks like a set up for a truck. Watching the rest of the video as I type. Lots of cool stuff to see.
R32-33-34 all had transfer cases like that. It looks just like a truck tcase.
stock cases blow chunks bad. need cases that can handle anything, what grain to follow?
Idk if you still make these videos, but tons and tons of engine videos out there, but your stuff is just perfect simplifies and clears a lot of questions i had thank you
Thanks for watching, my later PRI video does touch on some of the newer billet engine stuff.
Ever notice how he likes to bang parts down on the table? lol He's noisy as hell with it but I love the guy. =)
Trust me Paul your not boring us.
Hey! Was that John Goodman at the beginning, promoting the Magnums?
whats a compatible and better transmission swap/upgrade for a toyota c50 transmission? or how/what would you upgrade to and why?
Think I'm going back to manual, technology has come along way and I'd rather bang gears!!!! Awesome video!!!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Now all we need is someone to invent a syncro'd trans for the weekday and a faceplate'd for the weekend all in one. :)

thanks for the info, really enjoy your channel
Good content. And Ending with Bjork was a nice touch haha.
Wow are hobby is growing, I can't wait to see how are hobby grows in the years to come...
why there are so many transmission? they are new so they are introducing the new way how they whould work or what..
Does the surface polishing of gears help with oil windage and reduce stress risers?
Windage yes, stress risers probably not so much. Shot peening will help stress risers created cracks
Awesome video! I wish I knew as much as you, but I'm starting to figure some of this stuff out.
I haveca super t10 that needs rebuilt. Is this something you do?
Thanks

do u have a video of automatic tranmission?
+Ejames sagaral No, but I am going to get a guest builder in to do a few common ones.

No need for bulky transmissions and gears.
Is there anything worse than a slipping clutch? An automatic

(stock and not modified)
Best to ask him....
Please upload truck gear box videos
Sure no problem when I get some in.
Unreal!
Correction - ERS /KERS Power should go through the box
900 HP
I think he meant to say rpm not torque, but just said the wrong word
What would you recommend for a 1000HP Toyota supra. The Toyota V160 is like 9K new. Is it worth it or just go T-56 or other option?
A T56 is not the great. Call up G-Force transmissions and see what they have to offer.
i cant get to these events so thanks for such a good product update.
Trying to film more events as I attend them
This was an awesome video. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Please share it.
what's the best oil brand and weight to use on m20
Raudel Perezchica please go to www.
Gl4oil.com
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME video!! GREAT info!!
how can I attend the show? I am a Mechanical Engineer interested in manual transmissions
Go to prishow.com and register.
Can you maybe show off some Transmissions that can be used street cars that are daily drivers but pushing out 500+ Horsepower?? Also I just found your channel and subbed. Great videos man
Please watch my other videos. The Muncie 4 speeds I do videos on can easy handle that power on the street and do.
I am building a drag civic, You can help me out when I get to this part of my build?
very well done video ....thanks for posting
Almost seems like Roltek doesn't want to sell transmissions.
Thank you for this video... awesome content!
+Chris J (T88-3oost) Thank You!
Well I've repaired Getrag units in the past and still have some tools and fixtures. Problem is I don't have cores or access to parts.
'New innovations'- are there any other kinds?
Museums are full of old innovations.
Is it a jewelry store?
To some people yes.
I could swear I saw some synchro units ... does NASCAR use both pure dog rings and synchro? Seems like synchro units would be too slow and "clunky" during shifts.
No Nascar transmissions run rings. Just dog ring style units
Videos are the best!
awesome stuff, I've learned a lot, really appreciate it
Your PRI videos deserve numerous cups of coffee but I can't figure out how to buy you one 65 years old not too good at this kind of stuff?
No worries. I'm hopefully going to film PRI this year
To me shifting through a manual gear box is almost a religious experience.
Any transaxles..????
In this video, yes. The video cover photo is from an F1 transaxle!
How anyone gives thumbs down for this type of content?
It's part of it. Expect it. People seem to go out of their way to leave mean comments and thumbs down. Sad actually
Not really true. It depends on case design. Porshe GTP's are all helical. When you are running 8 to 10K rpm for hours conventional oils will fail.
Ok, Thanks for the reply. What are you using for oil or does it depend on the application?
Neapolis it depends on the application most Street Transmissions with synchronizer rings I use a GL4 oil from driven racing oils. Composite rings take specific oils based on ring material being used
OK, thank you sir.
ha ha!!!!
Haven't gotten bored watching a video yet.
Excellent video
thanks. Very informative.
Thanks for watching. Please share it.
Where the Roltex guys drunk?
Could be. There is a great deal of "networking" that goes on at these events.
Wonderful occasion,
Shouldn't you be talking about the TORQUE a gearbox is rated for?
@@GearBoxVideo It is very gracious of you to give very comprehensive answers to questions. I'm learning more off of you than tech school. Thank you.
Heat treated in argon gas!! Gears
LOL this guy is the Colin Quinn of mechanics!!!
Look how well respected and liked Paul is among his fellow vendors, he's just a great guy.
Nothing like some stuff that is Made in America!
v nice video thanks
great content
