      @Chishio Chishio it is also a matter of being able to give consent or not. We can feel sympathy and choose not to participate in the cruelty of the animals just as feeling sympathy and choosing not to buy products made by the people who are forced to do labor against their will.

    apart from the aspect of how humans treat animals, something must be wrong when a pig is sold for 3 euros. If farmers are always in danger of being financially ruined by the meat and dairy industry - something is wrong. Not many cows get to to graze in the field anymore. Hell they dont even get to mate they get impregnated and bull sperm is a HUGE business. They have labs onsite to "handle " the bull sperm or they actually even have special handlers that travel all over to impregnate cows n extract the sperm. Nothing but business. Sooo sad . 😥

    I love what they are doing, giving production animals a new home. There are some solutions like this in the US, where you basically adopt a farm animal. But I think a middle approach would be best here in the us, at least until we all switch to plant based food- Small farms that are concerned with quality of life. I have a small flock of egg laying chickens who I will not slaughter, and I treat as my pets. If I do milk cows or goats in the future, they will get the same treatment. However i understand that this is not a sustainable solution for those living in the city. I’ve yet to decide on my feelings about meat, since I do enjoy meat on occasion.

      The thing is all animals die. Eventually. That is the time to eat them. However they dont die to order so it creates a supply and demand issue. If all the refuges, because they are not farms if they do not produce a product, could collaborate, it may be possible to still sell butchered meat just farmed ethically. Humans are carnivores as well as herbivores. Lets not forget that. Vegans need to remember this. Not everyone wants to give up meat and should not be forced or guilted into having to give meat up.

When the time came to fill the freezer with meat that's what we did. We always did it as humanely as possible. I still get care packages from my family. The meat from them always tastes much better than the factory farms.

    • @Noukz37
      @Noukz37 3 роки тому

      Sorry, but that just doesn't make much sense. You can not kill someone humanely - a humane thing is to forgive and love! The act of taking someone's life is just that - killing, or murder even. If you and your family had no other sources of food and were starving, than it's about survival. Otherwise, it's just a habit.

    • @hillockfarm8404

      @@Noukz37 Makes perfect sense. Not everybody is rich enough to buy food from who knows where, even now still rural often equalls poor. But with access to land a full belly becomes much easier. You want to know where what you eat comes from, the only way to be 100% sure is to grow, raise (and slaughter) it yourself. It does however come with a higher demand in calories (about 1000 more/day) and a higher protein need. Plus animal manure makes good fertilizer (when composted).
      There is a very simple reason agricultural development in 3rd world nations focusses on livestock for meat, eggs and dairy rather than growing crops. Meat is a concentrated foodsource that can be raised on plants humans cannot eat. And properly managed both confined and grazed improve pastures and revitilize cropfields. That city and first world people have the possibility to get whatever they want to eat for whatever diet they choose from where-ever it is grown is a recent and looking at rising transport costs short lived luxury. If we want to keep a viable human habitat we'll need to go back to local and seasonal foods pretty soon.

Also, animals can be kept on the land to improve the overall health of the ecosystem without harming or killing them. I don't have enough energy and time to dispute your misinformation, you need to read and research more, that's all I will say.

      Also if you have animals sooner or later you'll face the challenge of when to either rehome/euthanise/slaughter due to problems with either the animal or yourself. Be realistic, yes quality of life comes first, no matter how long/short it may be. Ideals are fine, just be realistic about who can share them. You do understand that every big company is propped up by tax breaks, cutting corners and under paying workers right? To the point where taxpayers are basically paying their labor costs. If they were forced to be ethical it wouldn't be "sustainable" either. When all you care about are profits.

      @@funnyfarm299 So who will pay for the upkeep of the millions of cows that live to 15-20yrs old, 10 to 15yrs of upkeep. Plus all the pigs, sheep, chickens etc. Many will die because they are no longer a commodity, will no longer provide an income. Look at the number of abandoned pets and they are what many care more about, are we going to have cows and pigs left out to starve as they will no longer be cared for? I am all for a more sustainable model and get rid of factory farming. To expect that the whole planet will stop eating meat in at least the next 100yrs is not a realistic one. 99% of all consumed meat is from animals that would never have lived at all if not for that reason.

    I love the ‘rescue’ BUT… you are now depending on donations to support your PET animal farm.. To what end ? This might be a great solution for the end of a traditional occupation, but it has no chance of long term ‘welfare support’ and subsidies to support the ‘farmers’ who are now nothing but glorified lifetime ‘pet owners’.
    If you cannot ‘eat them’, what is the point in expecting someone else to support your ‘lifestyle’ ?
    I just do NOT see the ‘big picture’.

    The reason we eat animals is due to a number of reasons but food security would be one of them. For example take a wet climate that can grow lots of grass. People cannot eat grass. Growing crops in the climate is problematic as one year the harvest might be successful and the next might mean that the harvest is a complete failure. Grass will grow all year round but the key point here is that it needs to be grazed. Grass absorbs carbon when its growing. If it isn't grazed then it will die and stop absorbing carbon. Ploughing a field releases carbon into the atmosphere where as grasslands retain more. But we cannot eat grass. We let cows eat the grass and then we can eat the meat provided from the cow. Shipping food all over the world growing in massive plantations are doing more harm than cows are. Monoculture are not good we need diversity. Grasslands with hedgerows are full of animals and diversity. Also if we are not careful and with the weather we could easily slip into food shortages and famines. If you think cows are bad for the planet then think of this, were the American prairies empty of animals when the white man arrived. No they were full of buffaloes that sustained life in a perfect ecosystem. Millions of them. Now the prairies are empty and have just one crop CORN with very little life and diversity and massive amounts of chemicals poured on it every year.

    • @Washpenrebel
      @Washpenrebel 3 роки тому

      I'm not a fan of the current meat industry but we cannot be radical about it. We need balance, diversity, and less pollution and chemicals. We need to stop shipping food all over the world and grow and eat locally and in season foods. Food with a low carbon footprint and people who have plenty of food security. Take Ireland as an example in the 1840 the main crop was potatoes and the crop failed year after year and a million people died. The people who died were the poorest in society. A million more emigrated, these people were starving....

    It's not necessary to consume meat or dairy in order to live a healthy or even athletic life.
    Meat and dairy production entails pain, suffering and injury.
    Thus meat and dairy production is, by definition, cruel.

      Unfortunately most of the veg in shops is grown hydroponically. None of it has ever seen soil and is not that good for you. The only way to do it properly is to go organic and that is costly and can be very time consuming. Most people have enough to deal with in day to day life to realistically undertake a change to veganism in the correct way. Im still trying to find a vegan that doesnt take supplements, especially iron.

      @@colinjones9211 Man, were do you get your information? My god.
      1.- Hydroponic food is far more nutritious than food cultivated in soil. There is plenty of research about it.
      2.- Organic also isn't the solution. It consumes more water than traditional farming. Organic isn't also healthier than regular food production. There is also plenty of research about it.
      3.- Vegans take supplements but mostly for B12, not for iron. There is plenty of iron in vegetable sources. Not the same as B12, which is harder to find in vegetable world.
      Man, you really need to improve your facts. You have it all backwards. Sorry. Have a great day.

    Was hoping for more insights into horticulture. Why would you not slaughter an old dairy cow? You are just going to let them suffer until they parish for your own conscious. What needs to stop is massive stock yards where all the young cows that get slaughtered have only eaten subsidized corn their whole lives. Unfortunately most people are not willing to pay the difference because they have the option to buy cheap beef over free range grass fed beef.
