    ABOUT SHELLY
Shelly Southall is a “Rightsize Living Expert” with a passion for helping people who are struggling with weight regain, or the paralyzing fear of regain, after weight loss surgery. Shelly began her battle with obesity as a young girl, starting her first doctor-directed diet at 8 years old. From there, she was sucked into the yo-yo cycle of dieting which included hospital programs, nutritionists, psychologists, fat camps, starvation, pills and just about every big-name diet program you can imagine. She underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2002, losing 101 pounds. Shortly thereafter, some of the bad habits returned and her lifelong struggle resumed … and she eventually regained half of the weight she had lost through surgery. Her bariatric tool still worked, but she needed to develop what she refers to as the "rightsize mindset" to go along with it. After more than a decade of struggle with post-surgery regain she finally figured out how to break free from the chains of obesity once and for all without dieting or drastic measures. Today, Shelly helps others achieve rightsize living through her program Bitesize Changes for Rightsize Living.

This morning I implemented “But first” - I got my morning walk out of the way first thing when I got up and came home. I was going to make my protein coffee and told myself, “But first I’m going to get some of my water in” and I’m working on that now!

I’m an all day grazer now. I need to figure out how to discipline myself to stick to my 3 meals a day and 2 small snacks, that are pre-planned and tracked so I know exactly what I’m consuming in a day.

I totally get it...I was an all day grazer for a long time, too. I found making little changes made all the difference, so you can ease into not grazing rather than trying to do it cold turkey. BTW...you might find my private Facebook group encouraging and enjoy being among others who are making slow and steady lifestyle changes...details on how to join (it's free) are in the description of this video. Plus, when you get on my email list you'll also be notified of upcoming events, like my Back on Track After Bariatric Regain Bootcamp...it's a free workshop and it's coming up later this month.

I HAVE to have coffee in the morning. It's always been a ritual that I look forward to. So at first I couldn't even think of a "But first" but I've got it. "I'll enjoy my morning coffee but first I'll take my vitamins." That is so simple and easy for me because I make my coffee while getting my kids ready for school and I can just pop my vitamins as I go and by the time I'm done, so is my coffee. Plus...I get some ounces of water while doing that :D I LOVE THIS TRICK!

Yay! That is an awesome way to implement the "But, first..." tactic! Cheers! ... I say that with my coffee mug in hand :)

I have stretched out my pouch 🤬. You are a fantastic find!!

Thank you:) Are you sure you stretched it? Some stretching and contraction is normal as the stomach is elastic. Also, we can feel extra restricted in the first months after surgery when our body is healing.

I like all five, but think the But First resonates most with me. I am going to give this a try this week.

Having an opponent other than myself. I actually have a surgery twin and she's losing faster than me so I asked what she does for activity. I've upped my exercise routine since then . And I am a grazer. My meals don't add up to 800 calories so it must be everything in between that I don't count.

Love your comment, Tarrah! Our bodies are different and we all progress at a different pace, yet healthy rivalries can be a great motivator, as you noted. Yes, the grazing can add up faster than we realize. I love that you seem to have really great awareness...that will be a huge contributor to your continued success!

I don't need to lock the food away. I simply need to remove it from sight. If it's in the cupboard or fridge, I'll forget about it. Out of sight; out of mind. If it's out, I grab it every time I walk by.

Love this, Patricia! I find that more and more, I am able to forget what's "out of sight" as well. That was NEVER the case for me before surgery :)

Hi Desiree. I totally understand as I struggled with regain for a looooong time. It’s scary, crushing and frustrating. If I had to point to one thing that marked the turning point for getting back in control it would be shifting from a place of panic where I tried to fix EVERYTHING all at once to instead shifting to a place of calm and FOCUSING ON MAKING SMALL, CONSISTENT CHANGES. I know you’re in the fb group, so continue showing up there and participate as much as possible b/c those daily conversations will help keep you focused on slow and steady change and provide the opportunity for you to give and receive support. You’re not alone in this.
