How I Got in BIG Trouble After Bariatric Surgery
How I Got in BIG Trouble After Bariatric Surgery explores the thinking that sparked my downward spiral into post-surgery regain. Discover what this thinking is, why it's a problem and how you can avoid it (or overcome it).
Bariatric success begins with your mindset. Too often, we try to test the boundaries after surgery to see what we can get away with. When we do that, we let old thinking and habits out of their cage and it's really hard to get them back under control...but it can be done.
In this episode, you'll learn:
The Common Mindset That Can Get You in BIG Trouble (1:44)
Problem #1: Disordered Thinking (3:34)
Problem #2: Trying to Fulfill or Cover an Emotion (5:47)
Problem #3: Unleashing the "Sugar Monster" (4:52)
Hyperpalatable Foods Get You Hooked (4:24)
How to Overcome the "What Can I Get Away With" Mindset:
Step #1: Recalibrate (6:24)
Step #2: Identify What You're Really Feeding (7:23)
Step #3: Uncover What Will Nourish You (8:09)
Have you faced this challenge? Have you regained weight after bariatric surgery due to this type of thinking? If so, share about your experiences in the comments below the video :)

ABOUT SHELLY
Shelly Southall is a “Rightsize Living Expert” with a passion for helping people who are struggling with weight regain, or the paralyzing fear of regain, after weight loss surgery. Shelly began her battle with obesity as a young girl, starting her first doctor-directed diet at 8 years old. From there, she was sucked into the yo-yo cycle of dieting which included hospital programs, nutritionists, psychologists, fat camps, starvation, pills and just about every big-name diet program you can imagine. She underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2002, losing 101 pounds. Shortly thereafter, some of the bad habits returned and her lifelong struggle resumed … and she eventually regained half of the weight she had lost through surgery. Her bariatric tool still worked, but she needed to develop what she refers to as the "rightsize mindset" to go along with it. After more than a decade of struggle with post-surgery regain she finally figured out how to break free from the chains of obesity once and for all without dieting or drastic measures. Today, Shelly helps others achieve rightsize living through free challenges/webinars/workshops and programs that include Rightsize Living Academy & the Bitesize Changes for Rightsize Living Community.

    My regain from my bypass was about 10 plus years after surgery. I got married and picked up the unhealthy habits of nighttime snacking and stopped my daily exercise routine. The turning point was my husband's cancer diagnosis. He had surgery to remove the cancer ......but became a couch potatoes after that. He gained about 100 pounds since his surgery. So instead of maintaining my healthy lifestyle..I picked up his bad habits right with him. I a trying to convince him to have the gastric sleeve done, but so far no success.😢

    • @WLSDelight
      @WLSDelight 18 днів тому

      I can't imagine how hard it must have been for you and your husband to navigate cancer. I'm glad the mass was removed and I hope the future is filled with good health for both of you. My husband and I both have a history of struggling with weight (my husband has not had WLS and today has turned around his health without it) and there were times in our marriage where we went down the rabbit hole of disordered eating together. I understand how hard it is to stay on track when your partner is not motivated to do so. Keep in mind that you can only control what you do. I invite you to take a step to get back on track by implementing one small change to your habits. It could be something as simple as walking 10 minutes a day or eating green veggies with dinner eat night. You will be amazed at how being successful with one change can elevate your confidence and motivation in your ability to create change...and that will lead to making another change...and then another. You might be pleasantly surprised that when your husband sees you making positive changes he just might be inspired to do the same. I know this is a complicated situation and I have every confidence you will come out on top.

    I had my gastric bypass surgery in 2008 lost 150 pounds wasn’t until 2020 that I started to gain weight last 2 years have gained about 29 pounds I’m desperate to get back on track I went thru a lot to get to 170 pounds

    • @WLSDelight
      @WLSDelight 19 днів тому

      Congrats on your success, Daniel! I do understand how frightening the 29-lb regain feels. When that happens we tend to panic and go back to the "dieting mentality" that we had prior to surgery...where we take drastic measures to get rid of the regain. What we want to do is the exact opposite. The stress that we have when we regain and our tendency to focus on the regain often lead to more regain. So, the first thing I always recommend is shifting your focus to what you are currently doing right (we get more of what we focus on) and celebrate those things you are doing right. It sounds nuts, but simply doing that will begin to shift your mindset and actions. Then just focus on making one change...just one. It could be walking for 15 minutes a day, or committing to a nutritious breakfast each day, or doing squats while you brush your teeth each day, or if you drink any beverages other than water replacing them with water. It can be anything. One change at a time and slowly, but surely, you will reverse the regain. You've got this!

      I totally get it, Heather and I'm so bummed to hear you are experiencing this. I regained 50 lbs so I get it, and understand how draining and frustrating it can feel. You can turn it around and I can tell you are motivated to do so :) My best advice is to avoid dieting...that will only take you further down the rabbit hole. If you're interested, I'll be doing another of my free back on track workshops this summer. It's great content/tactics you won't find anywhere else and it's only one hour a day for three days. 7 years post sleeve gastrectomy... my best friend since i was a teenager almost 40 years ago passed and i regained close to 100 lbs over a year of depression.. i just decided one day i wasn't comfortable any longer... being fat hurts physically... that day i stated tracking my meals again and began eating a 1200 calorie a day plan.... within a few days i struggled to eat 1200 calories.,, i was not hungry at all ...my sleeve... the tool my surgeon gave me still works perfectly.. I just need to be mentally aware and choose what to eat..... give your tools a try.... do what you were told to do a month post op and see if it works for you too. .

      You're not alone in that. In most cases, the regain can be reversed. I worried I had stretched my pouch, but it turned out it still worked just fine, and with the right changes I was able to release ALL of the regain and keep it off ever since (I've kept off the regain for 6 years now). Hello, if anyone has had mini gastric bypass surgery I really want you to help me, I have had my mini gastric bypass surgery last year in march 2023. I lost almost 27 kgs but yesterday, i.e on 6th feb 2024, I checked my weight because I felt like I have gained back and ALAAS I had put on 3kg weight- I am extremely upset 😢 it's not been a year of my surgery even and I have gained back 😢 please tell me,has anyone experienced this? I want a sincere suggestion. Thankyou

    • @WLSDelight
      @WLSDelight 3 місяці тому

      I understand how scary that is. You can get back on track. My surgery was not mini, but RNY gastric bypass. I lost over 100 lbs in the six months following surgery, but had regained 9lbs less than one year out from surgery so that's why I understand what you're feeling. You can lose the regain by shifting your focus to making changes to your mindset and habits. Unfortunately, I didn't figure that out until I was 15 years post-op, and by that time I had regained 50lbs, but once I DID start making those small changes. I released all regain, hitting my lowest post-surgery weight, and have kept it off for the last 6 years without struggle. I share a little about my method in the 5th pathway in this video.

I have encountered some who regret it, but the majority are happy with their decision. There are no guarantees with surgery. It comes with risks. The way I look at it, if we are unable to mitigate weight issues on our own that has risks, too. I know it's a big decision and you've got to go with what feels right for you.

I have a due date and I’m making all my plans with my health providers. I hope I can fix my issues with hard work, but I still have the surgery in the side as plan b. Ty for sharing your experience it did helped me

      This sounds like great rationale. I think the nutritionist is a great plan. I had PCOS, too. I was diagnosed a few years before surgery, and it had probably gone undiagnosed for quite a while because many doctors had not heard of it back then (25 years ago). Now that I've hit menopause, it's no longer an issue :)

    I HAVE to have coffee in the morning. It's always been a ritual that I look forward to. So at first I couldn't even think of a "But first" but I've got it. "I'll enjoy my morning coffee but first I'll take my vitamins." That is so simple and easy for me because I make my coffee while getting my kids ready for school and I can just pop my vitamins as I go and by the time I'm done, so is my coffee. Plus...I get some ounces of water while doing that :D I LOVE THIS TRICK!

      Sorry about that. If I remember correctly (it was a long time ago), I overrode the automatic cc to spend extra time manually transcribing the video myself to ensure the subtitles were accurate. I'm not sure if something changed since I did it, but it appears they are gone and I don't see a way to go back and correct it. I'll try to fix it in future videos.

Yet, life is messy and it's not uncommon to find ourselves struggling. Even though that video is five years old, I can tell you the "one change at a time" approach really works. I've kept off all 50 pounds of the regain I released for more than five years now...I share that with you so you know it is possible to maintain rightsize without deprivation or drastic measures :)

I mean plaim chicken meat with tastless potatoes???

    • @WLSDelight
      @WLSDelight 7 місяців тому

      Thanks for your message. I understand you fear. Being afraid is normal. I remember being afraid before surgery, too. We fear surgery and many of us also fear "losing" foods that we love. Food is often our friend, painkiller, tied to memories and celebrations, etc. Surgery is a risk, and not doing anything is also a risk. We do our best to consider all options and pick the one that feels right for our personal situation. Life after weight loss surgery is different for each person. No matter what path you choose, nutritious food choices WILL be necessary to create the body and lifestyle you desire. For me personally, I still find joy and pleasure in food. Most of my choices are nutritious and I've learned how to make nutritious foods in ways that taste wonderful. There are some foods that no longer work for me personally. I have a hard time eating dense meat like steak, but I don't miss it. I am limited to how much sugar I can eat without getting ill (which I feel is a good thing...I can have a small portion on occasion and savor it). I still have to make the right choices, but surgery gave me the guardrails to help me maintain a healthy lifestyle. Best wishes for a quick recovery after surgery :)

    I’m 10 years post sleeve and exceeded my goals. I kept it off for 5 years and then discovered “slider foods”. Hi there. So glad I found you! I’m 10 years post op. I lost 85 lbs and about 4 years ago I’ve since gained back 40. Problem is, since it was so long ago I just can’t remember the do’s and dont’s of what I should and shouldn’t be eating. Do you have a video on this? Please help!

    • @WLSDelight
      @WLSDelight 9 місяців тому

      My best advice is to avoid anything resembling a diet or drastic measure as those can mess up your metabolism, and instead make one small change at a time. Start by picking one thing to change that you know is not serving you. It can be as simple as drinking water (search water calculator to find out how much is right for you). Once that is not a struggle, add one more change. It could be adding a green vegetable to a meal or walking for 10 minutes a day. We make weekly commitments in my private Facebook group (link in video description) if you'd like to join us there and I'll be hosting my next free 3-day bootcamp on how to get back on track in September. (I haven't formally announced it yet, but you can get on the VIP notification list by going to my website: wlsdelight.com ) In the meantime, here's another video that might be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/z4d3f6it5f8/v-deo.html

    Had a Roux-En-Y in 2003. Lost 175lbs and haven't gained any weight back. For me it was too serious of a life change/event to sabotage it. In fact, my surgeon told me that the surgery was as serious as open heart surgery. THAT got my attention!! I still have head hunger and get disappointed when I can't go all "hog wild" with a pizza. Its okay though! I have precious grandchildren who need their Nana!
