I taught my children to budget as soon as they receive any money.this was hard when they got older but paid off for them.half of their money went into a saving.when they turned 18 i gave them the bank books.two of my three children bought homes at 19 using their savings as a down payment. And im proud to say they still continue to save and they are teaching their kids to save

I have budgeted my money since my first job at 17. My Daddy taught me that to pay him $50 a month for board, then save some and keep some spending money. I just made $96 a week then! I eventually got a job with the Post Office and purchased my own home at age 37.

One of my best recommendations is once you have an emergency fund, figure out what annual expenses come around every year like property taxes, termite inspection, escrow shortages, etc. Save for those throughout the year. I've now that now consistently for over a year and it was great having the money once it's time. I have added more categories now. I looked at expenses that we ended up charging that we should have saved for. That's helped us not add more debt than what we already have while paying off what we do have.

YOU HAVE A HOUSECLEANER!!! I watched your other video about all the jobs that you have and you talk about some of the other things that you do. I thought how does she have time to clean. Her house always looks so nice AND she has a 5 year old. I was thinking I only have one job and there are days I think if the board of health came in they would condemn the place. Good for you. Money well spent I’m sure.

I love your enthusiasm. I love that you have a budget item for giving. I love Dave Ramsey, so I have several sinking funds for the budget items that are paid annually...such a comfort to know the money is there when it's due instead of robbing another budget item or worse yet - charging it. I use an Excel spreadsheet to keep up with the balances in my envelopes. Finally, finally after a year of working with the budget on a fixed income (retired and widowed), the act of working out the monthly budget is actually satisfying instead of gut wrenching. I love that you have such a positive attitude rather than teaching that budgeting is all drudgery. Diane in North Carolina

suggestion, w/ the car insurance.... set an amount to come out each month to save for the yearly amount. what i am suggesting is so you are ensured to have the amount at the end of year (or most of it to make getting rest together easier) when comes due, its saved up in stages so don't need to come up w/ all at once usually, also not mentioned by paying the year all at once can usually get a lower rate on bill to save money.

Great tips and what a way to teach your son early about money. I never had a car but I took the public bus. I still would budget for the bus. I rather have brown bag lunch ( but I make and eat mine at home) than spend that couple hours a week in the laundromat. Its a good trade off for my needs and time. I have been a single working mom for 50 years (includes one grandchild and big age differences). I’m retired now, live in subsidized housing and receive EBT for groceries. This budget plan is the simplest I have seen. It makes sense. I paused and actually plugged in my numbers. Yearly I call the internet, cell phone and car insurance companies to try to get lower rates. In the Debt column I have life insurance and payments on two loans ($130 and $119). I have an investment account that pays me $160 goes into my savings account. Sounds pretty good so far. The challenges are medical co-pays, etc. almost every month, I need to transfer money from savings to checking. I’m 75, once or twice a week I eat out at McDonalds when I have to batch my errands for $3.05! I’ve already given up all other extras. I make crafts and art that occasionally I am able to sell (this gets me through gift giving for Christmas and birthdays). My goal is to be debt free. Getting a job would impact my rent by 1/3, due to my age and stamina would not be an option. Your videos are so inspiring, this one in particular is easy to follow and understand.

Having only recently subscribed I am going through your older videos ... as I watched I was thinking - but what about sinking funds, what about emergency find, what about this, what about that... then I remembered that I didn't include any of those either in step one. Yes, there are loads of other things but mastering, or at least starting on these steps has to be step #1. Once mastered, I added the other goals. Great video, thanks

I love budgeting combined with small "frugal hacks", and old-fashioned self-sufficiency principles to allow our family to keep debt down while teaching the kids to save not only for those rainy days, but for vacations. The last day of our vacation is the first day of the next vacay, because we all sit and strategize how the saving/funding process will work for the upcoming year. This also helps cure the "going home blues", as they are excited to plan for the future vacay. Saving extra windfalls, purchasing food/grocery cards, and staying at a place with a full kitchen help us curb costs, and we always opt for the many museums and parks in the area for "free" entertainment. We still manage to save while living a life that does not make us feel deprived of living is key for our family, and has helped us teach our kids that saving and goal-setting are necessary life skills. Thx for the great information--

You crack me up! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Buns' appearances on your videos. Mr Izzy is a frequent guest on mine as well. I've got my diet soda, notebook, pen and calculator handy and ready to use.... Your 4 categories make soooooo much sense, especially how you explain how the lifestyle category is the stuff that's negotiable. Edit to add: yes Kaden, I will make my budget for now AND keep making them well past July, just because you so cutely asked!

You don’t have to pay for water?! Lucky! I have a washer and dryer in my apartment and it’s the first time I had to pay for water in an apartment. It caught me off guard when I got the first bill! Yikes!
I was looking forward to this video and it definitely did not disappoint! You are such a positive influence to me!
Do you have any tips on single parenting? For example, child support and sharing costs with my child’s father? The child support he pays me is based off his Home Depot salary from 8 years ago. He has since finished college and works in IT. Should I ask him to help out more and let him choose how much to give, or make things messy and take him back to court? I honestly don’t want the hassle and we are friends and get along. It’s just rough because I’m barely keeping my head above water and he is off buying acreages. He has our son every other weekend, so everything is pretty much my responsibility. Sorry for the long post! Love your channel!

Like your budget set up. I have just two more categories than you in the family section:
    1. shoes and clothes for my 12 year old son. He needs a new set each summer and winter.
    2. Drugstore items like perfume, soap, shampoo, washing powder. I spent to much on that in the past, so I separated it.
Since this year I added green and red traffic lights next to each category. It makes my happy to see all the green, which means I spent less than budgeted.

Scott Dow pay it off. Pretend you closed it but leave it open even if you never use it again. Blessings to If your disciplined, once you've cleared a month of zero balance you can charge purchases as though you paid cash paying the balance in full each month without incurring a penny of interest. You'll have paved the way for good credit score and keeping good credit score. Blessings

Yes, don’t close your card! Look up as many videos on building your credit score as you can. You’ll see why. Having a high Credit Utilization and building up your payment history will help your score and in turn help you purchase anything (house, car, etc) later! Look up the 800 credit score man. He has good stuff

Budgeting and frugality is my fave content! Thank you! I would love to have my personal line of credit paid off within the next 18 months. I've created a simple budget and automated all my bills. My problem is sticking to the money I have left over for regular discretionary spending (which I consider gas for the car, groceries, household stuff, clothes, gifts, Dollar Tree hauls haha). In a perfect world, I would have about $500 more per month for spending than I actually do. That's being super generous lol. I would love to know how you stick to your budget, how you manage to avoid the Target trap and do just buy that laundry detergent! Thanks love, really enjoying your channel and love Kaden's cameos at the end😍

I am using the cash envelope method, I was bored because for a few months I was just using plain old envelopes crossing off numbers on top of envelopes, keeping all receipts, putting the next months money in the envelope when it came....well today I got my cash envelopes that I bought on etsy, and they actually made this budget month a little funner. I have everything set up for October 1st to begin using the new ones. I only get paid once a month so all my September was competed. its over half way thru and I still have money in the pet care and household envelopes. I was doing great until I went to the local grocery store today, I spent all my money in my grocery envelop and it hit me that I cant spend anything else for groceries.....until October 1st.....what a revelation! Previously I would have just went ahead and purchased anyhow. But, I am changed the October food budget to try a lower amount for groceries as now since I got all those deals freezers are full, I kept a very minimal amount for milk and bread, and planned one eating out excursion as a treat. It is still looking like I will be debt free in January, 2020....Thanks Kate, watching you has really helped me keep my focus and my eye on the prize.....

I use an app called FinTonic. It automatically categorizes your bank account movements although you can change names and move everything. It tells you how much of each categorie you have spent, what is yet to come. It is fantastic. Nevertheless, before using that app I have made tons of budgets on paper and on excel. Now I made one more on paper, you motivated me to see my numbers in colours !!

Love your content! Question: I'm using Every Dollar app, have all my categories set up, but I'm confused how I pay my credit card. I charge as much as possible on my card to get the Points. I pay my balance each month. When I get paid, I shovel a large amount into savings to ensure I have enough to pay next months credit card bill. Not sure how to account for all this on my budget since I have all expenses categorized the way you outlined so I can see what I'm spending. Can you help me figure this out? Thanks!
