good job Bob, the metal lathe it's the way to go if you want to produce a small quantity of piece. i make part with wood lathe in the past and i realise it's much tougher to hold measurement on a small batch of part. i strongly recommend MT2 attachment ER32 with collet with wood lathe it will improve concentricity of part.
Hi Bob, You have really stepped up your game with the pen turning, I'm still turning for a couple of long established customers. I'm spending a lot of time on other projects like carving rocking horses, pinball machines and bar-top arcades. Still watching the pros pen turners though :-) All the best Tony
Thank you Tony, As always it is good to hear from you. I’m happy you are pursuing hobbies you love and enjoy doing. Perhaps you will do a video update sometime on one of them. Regards, Bob
Great video Bob, found it interesting watching a wood turner using a metal lathe. I wouldn't recommend using a parting tool for facing off but it worked. 60° threading tool may not be the best choice for chamfering but in ally it worked. Did or will you be adding some sort of protection to the nib to stop it discolouring ? i found an ally pen i made discoloured in a short time which makes your hand dirty. i understand at this point you were probably new to metal turning so not a criticism just an observation as im 7 months late to the party. As a tip, when threading metal on the lathe you can bring the tail stock with closed drill chuck onto the rear of the die to square it while starting the thread applying slight pressure as the thread start same with a tap. good taps have a dimple in the rear of the square, this is for a centre to aid starting straight, same method can be used with a die as a live centre can be used in them as well thanks for your sharing your work Sean
Next up, learn to turn a body. I will share the notes, I want to turn one from acrylic on the wood lathe and modify the notes for that first. I want this to be a introduction to kit less without all the expensive tools. Regards, Bob
They are expensive unfortunately. I got the lathe for a good price and the accessories are what costs. Look for a complete lathe with chucks and tools included. Regards, Bob
RJBWoodTurner That’s what I’m finding. I know it’s a tool, so I expected a higher price, but I still got sticker shocked. The metal lathe will be a “one day” tool.
Outstanding, I had been wondering if these medi lathes would do aluminum. It looked like your wasn't turning true, (wobbling) but the nib came out great. Nice work
I think he wobble is an optical illusion with the camera or lighting or something because it doesn’t look that way in person. When I was editing it I couldn’t believe how much it looked like it was wobbling. It is 100 times more accurate then my wood lathe. Regards, Bob

Hi Bob, sweeeet nib. To keep things sticking when threaded I use O rings. I even use an O ring between the headstock and a chuck. Have a great one
I tried an”O” ring and as soon as the cutter hit it, it tore away. I need some HDPE.

quick tip to reduce the risk of crushing your part when cutting threads - cut the threads first, before you drill your clearance hole for the refill.
