  • Purchased this Echo CS-620PW Gas Chainsaw for cutting down some large trees that are in my yard and neighborhood. This saw is a beast and cuts through everything.
The saw has a lot of power waiting to be tapped. A few modifications like the ones here will add increased power. Overall, for me this was worth the time and investment.
Total time to complete which includes tuning and cutting was about 5 - 6 hours. A professional can do this in half the time.
    Enjoy!

Don`t leave the chain brake on when you`re blipping the throttle. If you keep doing that, you might as well order a new clutch for it right now.
Its still 4-stroking in the cut after your muff/mod. Its still to rich on the high side.

I have done the carb mod that allows you to lean the carb out. It requires a new main jet inside the carb. It is absolutely required if you run these saws at 6-12 thousand feet.
FYI those are the easiest saws to work on with most of the screws the same size and torx number. Never use a screw gun to assemble them because you will over tighten and strip screws. Just snug screws on all plastic saws.

Great detailed video showing the whole process all the way through, have done tons of these 590/620’s mods there definitely needed. Stock Muffler has like 8-9 exhaust angle directional flows.

Thank you for the kind comments, much appreciated! I really enjoyed doing it and wasn't sure how it would turn out. Agreed on the air flow restrictions. That was something to see it like that. This was definitely a confidence builder!

Привет, скажи пожалуйста, если я на своей cs 600 зделаю тоже самое будет ли эффект без дополнительной регулировки карбюратора? @@oldmanadventuring

@@user-hu5ti1lv5y Hello, yes, you will probably need to make a small adjustment to tuning the saw due to more airflow through the saw. It should be minor and easy for you to do.

Changes in the weather will usually cause some fine-tuning to the carb, so get familiar with how it should sound in and out of the cut. Sharpen that chain. Be safe

Did the muffler on my cs400. I had the same experience. I kept ramming larger and larger drill bits in there until it all came out and it took awhile. I'm thinking of making a ironhorse style or ram horn for my 620. good job on your saw.

Thanks for the comments and congrats on your saw. I think you'll have fun doing that to your 620 also. Mine did turn out pretty good. I just added a custom air filter and just need to check one more time in case I need a minor carb adjustment.

well yur learning. Keeping a saw at optimum operating speed does wonders for cut time, pushing too hard and letting the bar bury beyond the saws power band is a no go. Maybe the muffler mod was a plus, lots of people say it works for all saws but did it now make the muffler non spark arrestor equipped? I would caution to be sure and thoroughly blow out, clean the muffler after that "surgery" as any hard particles can be drawn back in with the engine pulses. My personal view is that some opening up may help but it seems to me people get carried away with that process and go farther than there is a payback for performance. I have looked at a lot of saw mufflers on saws I collect and it looks to me like the supposed restrictions are pretty small in magnitude, the single biggest is the outlet opening shape and diameter. I would be for leaving the internals alone and work on increasing the opening size and air flow capability. Judging from the sound of the engine and the cutting action of the chain you could gain a heck of alot of performance by better carburetor tune and getting that chain to optimum cutting form, more payback there than anywhere else in fussing with saw performance.

Nice work done on opening the muffler. It now moves more air and with it more fuel. I think it's too rich on the High jet now, because we can hear 4-stroking when in the cut.

Thanks for the comments and the "ears" on the sound as I am still learning this. I will take a look at the High adjustment to see if I can fix that.

Don’t hit the dirt bud. You will dull the piss out that chain! Just a friendly reminder or advice however you take it! I’m OCD about chains in dirt lol cause I hand file all the ones at work! Lmao 🤣 great video tho! I got a CS -590 but I run a stihl ms660 & ms362c but I’m building the echo for blocking.

Excellent advice and thank you! Love the big saw and power it brings. I do have a habit of hitting the dirt sometimes. Trying to train myself not to do that.

    • @wadepatton2433

Avoiding dirt is paramount to longer sharp chain service. If the chain ain't sharp, make it sharp. A dull chain increases heat/wear/time/fuel consumption. Before I got good at hand-filing (any method that gets you a sharp chain is ok-I hand file after decades of learning and practice) , I kept multiple sharp chains with me and swapped chains when the one on the bar stopped cutting as it should. But doing it yourself while the chain is on the bar is far more efficient in time and money, and you don't mess around running a dull chain because all the ones you have need sharpening. I've used jigs and fixtures to sharpen and they eventually became unnecessary. They were good teaching tools. Also this was before youtoob. Be safe out there.

I'm here because I'm about to buy a 620. It'll be my twelfth saw, and first new one (besides battery) in a very long time. I've modded and rebuilt a couple and will tweak the 620 as well. Next I'll fix my 7900, should be a good pair for a day in the woods.

Very well done detailed video man! Love the saw. Waiting for mine to arrive as we speak.
Im wondering if theres a way to not go quite that far hogging it out to keep the noise not quite as obnoxious?. If you had to do it all over again, would you go to that extent on the muffler.

Removing the whole thing is quieter than just drilling a hole below the exit

If you like playing with your 620 check out gearhead tuning they make some cool stuff for the 620 and West Coast saw make some 3 point dog that are pretty awesome.

Haha, my next video will feature the WCS dogs I am installing on the 620 hehehe. In fact they are still in the box because of the unboxing and install video I need to make.
I think I came across Gearhead a while back. I will have to look them up again. Thanks for the reminder!

It's a nice video but if you watch the way you cut at the end of the video I can tell that the chain is dull, you should not need to push on the saw like that.

Thanks, Its amazing how fast a chain dulls on aged hardwoods.

  • @oldmanadventuring

    ***** PLEASE NOTE *****
You will need to use Foam Filter Oil and oil the filter prior to placing it back on the Chain Saw. This was not done in this video and will be done for future installs and cutting!

Adjust the high/low now that u did the mod. Lean it out of wood. If not, there's no need to do the mods.
