I always tell my Guys (wildland fire guys) before you start turning screws you need to know where the screws are at. so if you get confused you can return the H/L back to where you started. Count the turns in till the jet stops turning. Write that down. Like 3/4 turn till bottoms out. Then adjust from there. Good info Gordy! Hope that makes sense. Stay safe!
With all due respect to all the other carb tuning videos out there ... this is the first one that makes me feel like I might be able to tune a saw on my own with some practice ... maybe start with a cheaper saw :) Thank you!
Excellent! I’ve read the manuals and seen many videos on chainsaw carb adjustment but this was the most succinct and helpful demonstration I’ve seen, including the counterclockwise for more fuel, clockwise for lean. I get it now. Thank you!
You have the best approach to teaching this method. I really appreciate how you emphasize the importance of importance of erring on the side of being rich versus lean. So many guys are quick to start screaming that saws need to be leaned out. I've never bought that. Excellent video!👍
I once listened to a guy who told me to go a little more lean...... was ordering engine parts 15 mins later. The consequences of too lean are far worse than too much fuel you can always tell a little about a guy by the way his saw sounds
You should do another one with a rev-limited saw, so people can hear what it sounds like when it hits the rev limiter on the coil, the ignition breaking up sounds quite a bit different than the burble, and maybe show tuning it in the wood. That was a good video, and fun to watch all the logging too. I know you have the power lines, etc to contend with. but, at least it is fairly flat!
Id like to see a video setting up a new MS462, 362, or 661 with the coil rev limiter aswell. I have set older saws by ear but have never setup a brand new Stihl yet so I have been wondering what the best approach is when setting up the new ones.
Thank you for this video! I’m an old school mechanic and submarine sonar technician… we did everything by ear! I like your clean cut, to the point method! Thanks again! 👍
Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for making this video. Like others have said, this was the first video I came across that actually made sense when you explained it. You should make another video, in a quiet place. Lol
Fell trees on the west coast of BC for many years with the 46. Best saw. Light and powerfull saw that never broke down on me. Ran 32 inch 75 gage bar and chain.
Ya gotta love the equipment nudge, it's a good feeling having a piece of equipment there! Lol, I wish I had the level of hearing to do that with my saws, thanks Gordy for educating us!
Great information more people should know these things the m tronic and auto tune saws are slick like you said but having the ear for how it should run and an understanding of why and how to to make sure these maual adjusted versions are usable to more people is awesome. And thank you for all the west coast saw parts you sell and design its amazing stuff
You need to get Mike a little electric Poulan so he stops disrupting the videos ha ha ha 😂 Awesome video this is exactly how I tune my saws as well 🤘 Stay safe. Get logs.
Great explanation Gordy! Only thing I would add is to make small adjustments. I've had saws come in that the guy has been cranking on the screws so bad it wouldn't run.
Gordy, I really appreciate the time and effort you put in this video. It is easy to follow and informative. Know a lot of newbies I will be showing this to.
Thank you Gordy for the information. You actually made things alot clearer for me. I never really understood the lean or rich part of a carb. Lean to the right ... Rich to the left.. The same concept should work on lawnmower carbs as well I am guessing. Anyway, thanks again. Have a great day and stay safe
Good stuff. There used to be adjustable high and low speed jets on 2-stroke outboard carbs. You get the boat going full throttle and open the high speed jet until it just starts to slow down, then turn it back in a little bit. Trouble was most people were doing the opposite, turning it in until the slow down then opening it a bit. Too lean! So the manufacturers took off the knobs and used fixed jets.
Gordy, this was an awesome how-to! This is the best explanation of tuning your saw hands down. Im looking forward to more of your videos and others as well!
Getten ready to put together my small felling saw, a new old stock ms380, factory full wrap. I bought the last set of 3pt bucking spikes for it from you about a month ago. With a muffler mod those 38 mag series wake up, especially with the Bing carb, set her 4 stroken at 12,800 rpm and they rip right with a stock ms460. I prefer the full wrap over the typical 3/4 that stihl normally uses now, because I was brought up felling timber with husky 2100 and 372xpeee.
Very good video💙 I didn't realize for the longest time that the little stihl screwdriver they give you, it has a little triangle on the end of the handle, its really helpful in knowing how many turns you've made when adjusting a carb💙💙💙 good on stihl for actually putting some thought into the tools they include with equipment 💙
@Westcoast Saw I had a pretty good day today, thanks. & I haven't done any cutting lately because i need to do the chainsaw operator's certification course and get my license before i can do any cutting.
Good explanation and demo of the splutter. I have always tuned the top rpm like that. Basically ensures the engine gets what it needs. Too lean is damaging.
This is exactly the video I’ve been needing I have this ring ding down back to idle on my echo 670. Even though it seems to rev responsively I need to add more low jet. Thanks for this video! Also love you’re raker gauge.
Good morning!! your videos are really good!! Congratulations on the beautiful work!! this 460 carburetor has a shared low system, a little more difficult to adjust, but it looks good..
Love your content. I'm glad to say my shop is now officially a wcs dealer. Looking forward to installing your parts on customers saws, Got a 500i that's getting the full works can't wait.
Thanks mate After trying other methods and lots and lots and lots of swearing I now have my saw running sweet And can hear the splutter at high speed revs Cheers from all the way in New Zealand
Gordy, your videos are perfect. Informative enough that anyone who shouldn’t try it won’t and just the right length to keep everyone’s interest IMO. Love the editing and content. Keep it coming man. I am just trying to find the right 500i to put all your parts on bud. My husky is done so on to the next👍.
I’m ashamed to admit it, but I have to tell the truth. I haven’t watched one of your videos now in 2 to 3 weeks. Simply because we’ve been so busy here where we live in NW Montana. YAAK MONTANA. Snow removal and working on equipment to get it ready for spring. Logging season. In winter it’s simply too much work to try logging. Between getting stuck, And, tearing up equipment because of getting stuck, it’s simply not worth it. Now that I am pretty much caught up, I’m going to kick back, relax, late into the night, and do nothing besides watch your videos and get all caught up!! YESSSSSSSSS!!!
Great video, My big saws (064 and 084) are both needing a tune, I was thinking about trying to dial them in this weekend. Both are running a little fat so not worried about hurting them but man im getting tired of pulling on the 084 when it dies at idle. I need to come meet ya, I think im about an hour north of you. I just found your channel; I like your videos.
and you have fuel. When I was learning to tune, I had my 660 almost perfect and then it started stalling. I could start it and then it would die. I was messing around with the jets again only to realise i was out of fuel 😂
Great stuff Gordy! I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates these lil tip vids! Ya know, just the tips! Keep up the great stuff both vid wise & WCS wise! Ya'll be safe!
All of my spark plugs are a bit darker than anyone else's around where I live. Had one that I rebuilt, a Stihl 391, that had an almost white plug. Pulled the limiter caps off the carb, set it a bit rich, and haven't had any problems since the rebuild. My 881, which I use for milling, has a pretty dark plug, but it'll pull through anything without going lean.
Great video right on the money even from years ago old firewood, cutter, 026, 044 sure miss the sound of a screaming, two-stroke! I used to duck tape, my pant legs
Man another nice looking/running ol' saw - a cousin to that sweet 044 you got. Not too sure which video I wanna see 1st - your saw collection or your truck collection. Hell, just show both please Gordy! 😉😉
I always tuned my 250R by upping the Jets until it would stumble and then backing off one size. I'd rather run them a little fat because changing a spark plug every so often a lot cheaper than a top end but that's just me. Plus I love the smell of Klotz techniplate
To anyone just learning how to adjust their carb, if you have to really adjust the screws to get it running good, then you need to check for intake boot leaks or etc, the screws shouldnt be super far off from each other example - one screw turned a 1/4 turn and the other turned 3 full turns... that is a sign that something else is wrong with your machine💙💙
iv been at this for years and iv got pretty good lately but you made more since in this video than every video iv seen people dont explain and really show they just say do this and expect you to figure it out
Great video! I’ve always wondered how this is done. I’ll still get a tack to make sure I’m hearing what I’m supposed to. They are cheap enough. I’ve also heard from quite a few saw builders here on UA-cam that 40to1 is better for lubricity and longevity as well as tuning to be a touch fat. I don’t know if you have already covered it in a previous video. If so I’ll watch it if anyone remembers which one it is. I have a 460, it’s been great, I popped it milling trees (I learned my lesson on keeping thing sterile clean when refueling) and found a local saw builder. He did a great job doing a jug and piston with a mild port. Thank you for putting this together for all of us.
@@allthingsmotorized1885 THANX! Ya, I like using the tack to know for sure. I think I heard iron horse say that tuning down around 10k rpm produces more torque or is the peak torque range? Any opinion on that?
@@sawdustadikt979 best thing is to check your manual, the manual for my stihl 038 super states 13.5k max speed with no load, from what i know some manuals will also tell you a optimum loaded rpm/peak torque rpm which is basically where your saws rpm should settle to underload
@@allthingsmotorized1885 🤦♂️ of course,a manual. I’ve heard Bukin talk about tuning in the cut. I look forward to understanding all of this and applying it. Especially to know I got my saw where it needs to be on my next milling session. Seriously, thank you.
@@sawdustadikt979 no problem bud, i'm still learning aswell, im only 15 started buying non runners and flipping them about 2 years ago always knew alot about the engine side from living on a farm but still learning on actually running them

Love the video. Looking forward to see one on the truck! Super clean. You can tell you care about it with the cardboard on the tailgate. Hope I don’t miss it!
With all the complete nonsense floating around UA-cam it is ultra refreshing to see a video that basically anyone can use, and explanations as to WHY the adjustments should be done how they’re done. That 460 is pretty snappy! Very well done, and with the confidence in what you’re doing to give others the confidence to do the same! I would add…clean air filter, properly mixed fuel and known good plug, but these are givens to the experienced user. I’m a bit late on the comment but the video will be useful forever, just excellent! Question…what oil do YOU use? Have you seen all the oil videos?? Whaaaat??? I’ve used HP Ultra in saws, trimmers, blowers, etc for decades and never blown an engine in anything. I probably log 100 hours of “2 stroke time” a year. Why does it get such a bad rap from some if its that bad? And why would Stihl have you buy a 6 pack with a new machine to extend the warranty if it was going to cause failure which they would then have to warranty? Or….or….is this just a bunch of axe grinding on these videos I’ve seen about HP Ultra? What’s your choice and why?
Awesome video. I just recently got a 461 and should be getting my Bark Box and Maxflo this week, so I'll have to adjust the carburetor. With the 461 having a rev limiter, would I be correct in assuming that I'm simply going to have to rely on a tach (which I have already)? Or, in a pinch can you just bounce it off the rev limiter and adjust the needle to the point where it doesn't hit the limiter and then turn the needle back a touch to where it's just tickling the rev limiter? And suggestions would be appreciated.
The low jet will adjust the same as this video If you are at sea level and you end you pulling the limiter caps out you should land around 1 1/8 turn low jet 1 turn high jet That will be enough fuel you can tune it down from there You want it to hit the limiter it won’t hurt a thing 👌
Great video man, I have a tach and check myself. But hearing your explanation on how to do bit bye ear helped a lot. Also which carb do you like for the 046/460? I need a new one and they list several. Figured if one was better than the other i would get it. Thanks man, really enjoy the videos!
I always tell my Guys (wildland fire guys) before you start turning screws you need to know where the screws are at. so if you get confused you can return the H/L back to where you started. If you buy a saw brand new make sure it is not auto tune. Otherwise, you will not be able to tune it the way Gordy shows in this video.
It’s tuning a carburetor, not rocket science..
Remember most saws that 'just'needs a tune' have something actually wrong with it. Rarely does anyone go screw up their own jet settings

100hrs a year would be about equal to 2-3wks of regular work so it might take you 20-25yrs to equal the hours put on a production saw in one year.
Awesome video Gordy!! Surprised Garrett doesn't have a WCS clutch cover on that saw.😉 Keep the content coming, I can't get enough of it!
They don’t make one for the 460 😢.
Thanks 👍
@@nhill05 yes we do 👍
@@westcoastsaw1368 how did I miss that?! Lol. Just ordered one for my 460. Heck yeah!
Great video Gordy. Even got the orange axe to go with the outfit🤘
12:35 It was cool to see the reflection in your toolbox of the tree being dropped just behind the camera!
Good info 👍 I'm going to get me a set of your dogs for my new 462 now I know how to fatten that carb up 😀
Gordy, as always, thanks for sharing man!
U bet 👍
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
This is spot on thanks for sharing it.
Thank you, great video and easy to understand.
Sound advice, time-honored tuning process.
Great video bud, I always use a TAC it's just safer.
Thank you Gordy! Awesome video 👍👍
The low jet will adjust the same as this video
If you are at sea level and you end you pulling the limiter caps out you should land around
1 1/8 turn low jet
1 turn high jet
That will be enough fuel you can tune it down from there
You want it to hit the limiter it won’t hurt a thing 👌
Great info as always. Thanks Gordy.
Excellent video. Going to richen mine up a tad on full gas today.. Rgds
Great video man, I have a tach and check myself. But hearing your explanation on how to do bit bye ear helped a lot. Also which carb do you like for the 046/460? I need a new one and they list several. Figured if one was better than the other i would get it. Thanks man, really enjoy the videos!
Hell yeah, thanks Gordy!
