Completely agree with you on Like Clockwork. It's a masterpiece.
Songs... is better than Lullabies, in my opinion.
Villains...I genuinely think is much better than anybody gives it credit for. I think the biggest issue with it is that a fair bit doesnt "sound like" QOTSA. If another band had released the same album, I think many would regard it much higher.

It has good songs like Villain Of Circumstance and Feet Don't Fail Me. But as a whole it feels kinda weak though. Doesn't feel as comprehensive as their other albums, plus the fact that it came out right after probably their most comprehensive album Like Clockwork.

In my opinion, Songs for the Deaf has a nice ebb and flow. The songs that I'm not completely in love with on it help contribute to that. That's just my opinion. But I also don't hate Era Vulgaris. I'm also pretty mystified by the hate that album gets, especially when Villians exists. Also, I would have to question the tastes of somebody who didn't put ...Like Clockwork near the top of a QOTSA ranking. Seriously, that album is so good.

In Times New Roman is a grower, first few listens I thought it was solid, but now that I've thoroughly marinated with it I'm honestly thinking it might fall into the Perfection tier for me-there are no bad songs and Made to Parade is one of my all time favorites from the group (the lyrics/narrative strike a chord with me because I literally live that corporate life-for me, the song feels like a big unstoppable machine charging forward but miraculously you triumph over it in the end-its glorious). So glad to see you supporting the band with this content man, Queens really do feel the last great rock band. Long live the Queen.

The thing is, even though Villains is considered by the majority of the fans as their "weakest" album (I disagree but whatever floats your boat), it is still far, and I mean FAR away from being a bad or boring album in general. @SonoftheBread Рік тому +2

@@MetalTrenches Couldn't disagree any more, but hey, I guess that's the point. The road trip concept of the album was way too interesting to me and the radio segments leading between songs really lend to giving it that feel. A full hour runtime is perfect for the album in my opinion because I firmly believe the whole concept revolves around it being a driving album. It even explains things like Six Shooter, as it was written to be a satire on amateur metal bands that play on local town radio stations way in the sticks of SoCal.
      Anyways, my two cents.

    8. QOTSA: Some bangers, some forgettable, any other band's best record but Josh surpassed this almost immediately.
    7. Villains: Slightly underwhelming after Like Clockwork but a solid outing. Best artwork on a QOTSA album.
    6. Rated R: (Unpopular one I know) Instrumentation is killer but Josh goes further lyrically in future albums.
    5. In Times New Roman: Josh's best outing lyrically. This one starts out good but finishes great.
    4. Era Vulagris: First 9 songs are fire, swap out the remainder for The Fun Machine and you have yourselves a 10/10.
    3. Songs For the Deaf: I love this album, 2 songs too long but it is just a grand old head banging time.
2: Lullabies : Their most underrated outing with their most underrated collection of songs (why does no one talk about 'you got a killer scene'?!)
1: Like Clockwork: My first introduction to Queens and just sheer perfection.

Yeah Like Clockwork was a massive bummer when that came out. I've since grown to like a few of those songs, but as a whole that album was a big letdown.
Their first 5 albums were all instant epic classics. I never thought they would put something out that wasn't on that tier, but they did with Like Clockwork.
And Villains.. god damn. So fucking bad.
Like, that was their chance to bounce back from Like Clockwork, but somehow they just shat the bed big time and managed to put out a record that was 500x worse.
And their new album isn't on the same tier as their first 5 albums either, but at least it's better than Villains; although that really isn't saying much lol

I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed hearing In Times New Roman for the first time last night, as Carnavouyer had me expecting something completely mind-blowing. Fortunately, I think the meandering quality of a lot of the songs is starting to really grow on me, much like with Era Vulgaris. It's its own vibe and I'm appreciating it.

This album needs a second or third listen, and thats a great sign. I think this shows, that there are a lot of unexpected elements, which sound chaotic at first, but when I learned what to expect in the second time listening, I enjoyed the playfullness (if this word exist). I hear a little bit of lullabies to paralyze and obviously a lot of like clockwork style. I feel like the songs are written with more selfconfidence than villains.

They are one of my favorite bands of all time tbh. It’s funny, Era Vulgaris did used to be my least favorite but now actually is in my top 3 QOTSA albums lol. It doesn’t top like Clockwork, and Songs for the deaf for me but still amazing album. I’ll give the new one a listen when I can.

I was never as down on Era Vulgaris as much as some, but I can't rank it as Perfection, definitely co-sign on Like Clockwork which came out during a stressful time in my life, absolutely love Songs For the Deaf which I always tell people sounds like a robot played drums on every track, Dave Grohl is amazing, Lullabies was my go to whenever I was going out to party with friends, especially Medication and Everybody Knows That You're Insane, I've been listening to ITR last 3 weeks and I like it, me and my best friend are planning on going to the Aug 12th show in Queens of course lol

i'm assumimg the Lullabies ranking is based on the CD track listing; what about the Vinyl track listing with the 3 extra songs (not to mention Fun Machie was supposed to be on there too); how would that change its ranking? Or would it?
P.S. i've never heard anyone pronounce Era Vulgaris like that lol

The new meta these days is saying Era Vulgaris was great, but I got the hottest take : Rated R is very uneven, I think it's overrated because of 3 tracks (Lost art, feel good, headache). I've seen queens 4 times and frankly the best songs live are usually Lullabies and Song for the death's ones

This is the correct order from best to worst lol, including a letter grade:
    1. Lullabies to Paralyze (A+)
    2. Era Vulgaris (A+)
    3. Songs for the Deaf (A+)
    4. QotSA (self titled) (A)
    5. Rated R (A)
    6. Like Clockwork (B+)
    7. In Times New Roman (B)
    8. Villains (F-)

EV is very underrated, but i feel its getting more props as time goes on. You would have to say that besides Villians they have probably got one of the most consistent discographies for any 90s band that is still around. I would love to know if anyone has a band who has a better DISCOG. I only can think of Radiohead, Tool and maybe Deftones, Mogwai have a decent catalogue but have a few holes....

I listened to Songs For the Deaf a billion times it is definitely better than you say. But I agree I like Lullabies even more. Lullabies is my favorite QOTSA album. Era Vulgaris is not nearly as consistent as those predecessors. I would put it at good tier.
