    Very nice thermal analysis, dual channel gives more FPS boost than overclocking, quiet mode n CPU undervolting is the way to go.
    HP omen fixed the CPU wattage with bios update last year, let's see if Dell addresses the issue or not

    @OWNorDisown I have promised to you a tweaking review of my Dell G7 7790. So, here it is. Rig: 9750H, 2070 maxQ, 32GB dual channel (15-17-17....) 2666mhz, Evo plus 1TB. TWEAKS: CPU undervolt -150mv, GPU overclock: Core +200mhz, memory +800mhz, Kryonat repaste, cooling pads everywhere, cooling pad. Software run: Passmark performance test, Geebench 5, Cinebench R20, FutureMark (timespy & firestrike), PCMark. Results: All these programs were run on every step in order to see what impact each of the tweaks had. As you already have said the change from single to dual channel offers the biggest single most impactful alteration. Changing the NVME from a factory Toshiba to the EVO Plus had a similar effect with RAM in performance. After all replacement parts were installed I repasted the laptop and nothing changed thus far in the temp departmenT. The CPU would still hit 100c and the GPU 80c. Even though I have dressed the most important surfaces inside with the most expensive cooling pads for better heat conductivity to the metal bottom of the laptop. After all set and done, the single most important differentiator for the temps, as the extra channel for the performance, was the cooling pad! I didn't expect that! I thought the quality paste would offer at least a couple of degrees headroom but nada. When the cooling was in place the temps would go down as much as 20 degrees! I have used 2 different ones from Thermaltake. I come to the conclusion that the Notebook XL is the best amorg the 2 ( the other being the Ergo III). It seems that the cooling is what is needed for the rest of the tweaks to work efficiently. I suspect that what really helps isn't all that much the air inflow to the laptop that the pad achieves, but that now the laptop is elevated enough for the intakes to work as they are supposed to. The air intake design on this laptop is really poor. GAMES: Anthem, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total war: Three kingdoms. I will talk abou the FPS on the performance boost achieved. While playing games the temps almost never exceed the 85c on the CPU and 72 on the GPU, which is a 15-degree improvement on the CPU and a 8-10 degree one on the GPU. PERFORMANCE: In the end, as a result, the CPU performs 10% better than a stock 9750H, the hard disk performance is 35% better than the stock, the RAM is 35-40% faster than the stock and the GPU behaves like the full mobile RTX 2070. FPS is on average 10% more on these games. Moreover, in tests like CUDA (Geekbench) and machine learning that I am particularly interested my 2070 maxQ works like a 2060 SUPER. That is, even better than the mobile RTX 2070. Which translates to 15% improvement over the stock RTX 2070 maxQ,. And all of this while the laptop most of the time sits between 50c-60c in loads

    I think just to be safe I would get the 240W power supply separately to ensure the laptop gets plenty of headroom and not worrying about battery discharge and current limit throttling.

      I'm sure that will help somewhat, some one just reported that his G5 was repasted with liquid metal and it never goes over 85 degrees. I think the main issue though is that in ultra performance mode there is too many watts being pushed to the CPU. 70w when gaming takes a lot of cooling...

    Great, video, I've been waiting for this.
    If people want to deal with the temperatures while gaming, simply run your CPU at a lower clock speed (3.0-3.2GHz) which can easily be set as a separate profile on Throttlestop. I've outlined the steps in a video, the CPU will simple never run cool running at 3.9GHz and 60W+

    • @oliviaanderson1210

      Does this lower the performance? Because I have a g7 with a 1060 and it has serious FPS drops which I think comes from overheating. It should work fine because it has great specs. I don’t think it’s because of dust because I use it on a desk

    • @kakemboluide
      @kakemboluide 5 років тому +1

      @@oliviaanderson1210 not at all, in fact it helps increase performance, the CPU and GPU share heat pipes, so when the CPU runs extremely hot, it causes the GPU to severely throttle it's clock speed. But when you downclock the CPU, the GPU can maintain high core clocks for much longer.

    Much thanks for the video, I needed a detailed review on G7, especially concerning the thermals. I'm waiting on my G7 17 to ship, and this is my first experience with gaming laptops whatsoever so I'm quite unfamiliar with terms. I did some googling on my own and I found out that I can undervolt through Throttlestop, which helps reduce the heating. For 'single channel' and 'dual channel', though, I have no idea what they mean. Could you be kind enough to hint the basics? Also isn't overclocking the graphics bad for the sake of managing heat? (correct me if I'm wrong) +Would you recommend using the same Throttlestop settings for 9750?
    Thanks a lot.

    Is the screen; 144Hz version; the same as on the Alienware m15? I have read the screen is not as good on the G7 but lack any particulars. Refresh rate, color, brightness. Thanks for the full review. Like you I prefer design of the G7; the ports on the back, smaller bezels and flat color, less gamer design, the extended warranty is almost half the cost compared to the m15. What I don't like is only one SSD slot, comes with only one memory module so you have factor the cost to get dual channel memory. The price can be close to a similarly spec'd m15 though and I am not sure of the components quality in comparison to the internals of the m15. I ended up getting the m15 for the additional SSD slot and dual channel memory included in the price. I am still drawn to the G7 though. You have to get 2070 card to get the 90Whr battery option in the G7 with comes with 16GB single memory module, 512 SSD M2, for $2389 without discounts the similarly spec'd m15 with dual channel memory and I believe a better 512SSD M2 is $2589. The gap in price jumps when you get Dell Premium Support - $229 4 Years for G7, $560 for the same support on the m15! What does the m15 have that warrants the higher support costs? I would rather get the RTX 2060 in both as the additional $400 for the RTX 2070 MaxQ based on reviews and performance of the 2060 compared to the 2070. Unfortunately the options are limited on the G7 with the 2060 option when compared to the m15.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  5 років тому +1

      I must admit I have no idea why the m15 extended support should cost double the price, makes no sense to me...using my Spyder 5 pro the G7 measured sRGB 91% , adobeRGB 68% and brightness 340 nits. The m15 was 94% sRGB, 68% adobeRGB and 308 nits. Only a slight difference. I forget to take a note of the panel ID on the G7, they are similar for sure, at 25% brightness they both were at 88 nits so perhaps they are the same panel and just a variation in measuring.

    I have a new G7 15 (7590) with OLED, RTX 2080 Max Q, i7-9750H, 16GBs RAM, and BC501 NVMe SK Hynix 512GB drive. My Time Spy benchmarks for this system are subpar. I am currently getting a Time Spy benchmark of 6983 in Performance mode. This is 634 lower than Alienware m15 R2 with the same components, and 724 lower than the Alienware m15 RI with a i7-8750H CPU and same GPU and OLED. In fact this benchmark is only a few hundred points higher than some RTX 2027 Max Q systems I tested. For an the additional $700 the RTX 2080 Max Q costs I expect similar results. I have updated all drivers and made sure the 2080 is used during the benchmark and ran them several times with similar results. I am at a loss and all I can think is the Alienware units had their CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocked from the factory. I left all settings as found when I did the testing. From the benchmarks I see the GPU Core Clock is as follows: G7 1755; m15 R2 1845; m15 R1 - 1815. The CPU's are as follows: G7 - 2600 - Turbo - 3994; m15 R2 - 2600 Turbo - 4192; m15 R1 2200 - Turbo 4091. My guess is the higher Alienware settings account for the higher benchmarks. Again for the extra $700 for the 2080 on the G7 it doesn't worth it unless I can change the settings to equal the m15 units. I will try this and see how it goes.
    Another item the OLED panel is calibrated and not as cartoonish and saturated as my original m15 R1 with OLED but the Red's are more of a Brownish Rust color?
    And once again I had to delete all the Killer Apps and just install the drivers so the network would work at the speed it should! I have had to do this for every Dell / Alienware system the past two years!
    I do like the keyboard and prefer the numpad, like the jacks on the back panel, keyboard lighting is a bit on the dim side but works, the fingerprint reader is working well for me, touchpad is responsive, battery life is all over the place while doing the same thing (stream netflix using the Intel GPU), have an issue with the screen going dim on battery or plug and even though the adjustment shows 100% it is really at 70% or less and requires a reboot, dimming the OLED less than 70% can make it to dark to see so you have to keep it pretty bright, Alienware Command Center same auto updates and issues as mentioned in most Alienware reviews, the system feels tight and well built, the keyboard can get HOT during normal use while the system is on balanced mode, the fans can get loud but they don't have the squeal the m15 R2 fans had and are ok to listen too.

    If you're a music producer/enthusiast you'll be pleasantly surprised to know that this G7 gaming laptop is actually perfect for music production. It comes with ASIO sound drivers as standard & works seamlesly with Ableton Live (cpu stays idle at 5% usage) alongside Omnisphere 2.6 with hardware integration support and other popular vst's without any lag or issues just ensure you choose DUAL RAM ideally 2x16gb sticks & you're good to go. DO NOT TRUST Latency Mon as a sound benchmark program, it sticks to the 1st core of the multi processor & gives misleading results. I am a music producer & I would advise those stuck on using macbooks to consider switching as windows machines are finally coming of age & Windows is by far more accessable than IOS.

      Hi there, basically any pc/laptop with an i7 processor or even i5 would be fine but for audio it’s all about space & freeing up the processor as much as possible.
      Key ingredients are dual channel 16gb ram min, ideally a 1 or 2tb hard drive 7200rpm, hybrid drives are good plus ssd but it’s life will be reduced by constant writes. When using DAW’s, make sure drive is defragged, internet & antivirus software off, in addition, a bit of overkill.. switch NVIDIA off if there’s a second onboard intel graphics card, intel to intel works great but nvidia dedicated gpu’s require some dependence on the cpu at all times but it may not be an issue. Choose ahci (think that’s the right abbreviation) over a raid setup, raid creates a bottleneck similar to single channel ram, hope this info helps, it’s more about how the pc’s set up than anything else.

    Hi sir,
    Great review as always.
    I just want to know which one would be better dell g7 or triton 500 ?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  5 років тому +1

      The big plus for my Triton 500 with the 2080 max Q is that it has Gsync and you can manually switch to the intel GPU. At idle the fan doesn't spin at all .
      The turbo mode does help a bit too.
      Big downside is the inverted motherboard and for most people that means the G7 is the sensible choice because upgrading storage on the Triton is tricky. Probably the Helios 300 would make sense , my 1660ti one performs close to 2070 max Q at only $1200. Smaller battery at 59wh but still gets 5 hours. My review on that will be up on Thursday.

    Great review! I recently purchased the G5 (9750H, RTX 2060, 16GBs ram, 144hz display) for $1250 USD brand new. Now I'm not sure if I should have bought the G7 instead of the G5 even though it was so much cheaper :/ Thoughts?
    What are the implications on performance when you undervolt it? From all your videos I can see that the total wattage drawn by the CPU lowers to ~40W, but I can't determine the real life performance difference vs when thermal throttled.

    Trying to get advice from you Steven, Jarrod and Bob... And anyone else who wants to chime in;
    Would you go with an Alienware m15 r2 with 9th gen i7, RTX 2060, 16gb, 1tb SSD and 4k OLED display. 1 year limited hardware warranty. ($1820)
    -OR-
    Dell g7 17" with 9th gen i7, RTX 2070 max q, 16gb ram, 256 gb SSD / 1tb HDD and a 144hz IPS display. 4 year warranty / 4 year accident protection and 3 year battery warranty ($1720 USD).
    I currently have the Alienware m15 r2 model above. It runs good so far. Temps are actually good (I run games on quiet mode with -125 undervolt and CPU generally stays around 80c with occasional spikes high 80s. Not really any problems yet with it, but it's very expensive to extend warranty (to get 2yrs with accident protection it would drive the overall cost around $2300).
    I was sent a coupon from Dell after the purchase of the Alienware m15 for 15% off. Using that coupon alongside existing discount, I was able to get the above spec g7 17" fully covered under warranty for 4 years for less than the Alienware with it's base 1 year warranty. In addition I have a 2tb 2.5" Samsung SSD that I can add to the g7 17" to expand the storage.
    I love the OLED panel. I've never really used a high refresh screen. I know the Alienware m15 I got was a "good' one as temps are decent and no other issues so far. However, the lack of upgradability alongside the high cost to extend the warranty had me second guessing my purchase when, with the coupon I received, and much lower cost to extend warranty, I could conceivably get much more for my money...
    So with that information, what would you choose?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  4 роки тому

      Yes, that extended warranty is very tempting . OLED is nice, do you use it for content creation work? I'm sure the 17" screen is fine and I must admit I prefer a 17" for video editing and gaming on. And you can never have enough storage...so yeah, the G7 probably

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  5 років тому

      That does seem like a good deal and it should run a bit cooler. The only time the keyboard got uncomfortably hot was when the CPU was running at 100 deg C, it was pretty bad then. But once I got the temps under control it was fine. My main concern right now is seemingly Dell is saying undervolting is against the warranty but I don't know how they can tell.

      I have had one viewer say his G7 17" ran much cooler . I have to buy these things and cannot afford to buy the 17", sorry! Around the edge of the panel there is usually a rubber strip , very narrow so when the screen is closed you don't get the plastic bezel touching the keyboard area. The one on the G7 rattled, it was loose, if I recall it felt more like plastic than the rubber on my Razer. It just felt cheaper. Glad you liked my review and thanks for watching!

    Do you reccomend to pick this one (with an rtx 2060 and 8gb ram, I'll add an extra 8gb stick myself for dual channel) or an alienware M15 (also rtx2060)? I really like the build quality (the build of a laptop is really important to me tbh) and the looks of the alienware , however the dell g7 is more affordable and the storage options are wayyyy better (alienware ships the basemodel with only a 256gb ssd, and other storage configurations up your already high price with an extra 200 bucks, and I'm buying from Europe so yeah with added taxes it's a nightmare haha)

    Thanks for the video! Wondering why the G5 and G7 had such bad thermals by default if we don't adjust the CPU settings ourselves - is this just Dell being lazy? Or to put it in other terms, with other laptops if we cap their CPU frequencies + undervolt, would their temps all improve as dramatically as seen here? I've seen undervolting as a common method for lowering temps but not adjusting frequencies. Thanks again!

    • @OWNORDISOWN

      Thanks ! Dell pushes a lot of watts to the CPU when gaming, it only needs 45w (8th gen) to maintain boost and even less with the 9th gen but they push more, 60w was not uncommon. The G5 also had worse air intakes underneath vs the G7. Yes, lowering the CPU clock will lower the power needed to maintain that clock and since it throttles down anyway you don't lose anything )

      Daniele Magrì ok, I didn't know these things about the G7, but if G5 doesn't have optimus, how the heck does it manage to have good battery life at all? Asus gaming laptops with the same battery have really poor battery life when they don't have optimus. The only real difference I can see is the screen refresh rate and brightness . The G5 had 60 hz panel that is less than the 144 hz on the G7 and brightness wise, well the G7 at 25% is 88 nits whilst the G5 at 50% is 65 nits. The CPU power pull on the G7 was similar to the G5 so those two things are the only thing I can think of unless Optimus didn't work as well on my G7..

      The G7 is good for better battery life and it's more mobile because the power brick is smaller. The Y740 no longer has fan control but still uses the 90w 2070MQ so performance still a bit better and you have Gsync, the RGN keyboard is one of the best, although the keys pushed to the right might take some getting used to.

      If you’re worried about value, you might be best off with the MECH 17 by Eluktronics on Amazon. It comes with a full-size 2060 or 2070 (not the dialed down Max-Q versions), and for $1399 starting, you get an RTX 2060, 17” slim-bezel, 144hz 1080p IPS panel, 8gb RAM, 128gb SSD, and great thermal performance. And it’s all customizable from there (ram, ssd, hdd, battery size, thermal repasting, OS, etc.). Just keep in mind, opting for storage in the 2.5” drive will reduce the battery size as the “extended” battery takes up the 2.5” drive. I’d recommend not taking the upgrades (other than on the GPU), and installing your own 2666mhz DDR4 ram and m.2 ssd when the unit is delivered.

I change the multipliers to suit, if its too hot then I lower them one step at a time. Usually around 37 is good. I find that for the 9750h an undervolt on the core and cache of -140 to -150mv is good. You can lower the core further if you like , perhaps to about -160 to 170mv .

      @@OWNORDISOWN I really thank you for answering back, not many people do, I appreciate it!!! I agree with your approach, that is, CPU under + GPU same or over if max Q design. How do you like generally to undervolt the CPU cache in the 9750h? You have said before that the G7 performs optimally under 45watts. Does it stay automatically under this threshold due to the CPU core/cache undervolt or you explicitly set a limit in the TPL tab of throttlestop? @OWNORDISOWN  4 роки тому +1

      @@TheSamun no problem, I look at this way. If someone can take the time to watch my video and comment the least I can do is reply 👍
      In the TPL tab you can adjust the PL1 and PL2 watts, I usually keep them default unless the system is really trying to push too many watts. Lowering these will lower the clock speed of the CPU but I usually prefer to change the multipliers and lock in the click rate on the first page: change speedshift EPP to 1 and disable BDPROCHOT. On the TPL tab I do increase the turbo time limit to 96.
      I would use the laptop and take note of what the average clock speeds and temps are and adjust accordingly. For example if it averages 3500 mhz, changing the multipliers to even 37 will give a better performance and still lower the temperatures.
