I soak mine in Oxiclean with hot water. Works like a charm with no scrubbing.

Is it safe to use vinegar and baking soda to clean the grease filters?

Yes it is...scrub but ensure they are completely dry before re-installation. Ensure also that you unplug the microwave before any type service.

Of course you have to UNSCREW the cover of the front filters just to make things more difficult......a man must have designed this.
