Here Comes the Pain is by far my favorite. The roster was awesome and the fast pace playability of that game was amazing. I´ve stopped playing wrestling games a long time ago because nowadays the graphics are great but the playing experience is sooooo slow, overly complex and boring. The Def Jam games were also badass.
Darran Kern I´ve played Shut Your Mouth like 3 or 4 times so I can´t fully evaluate the game (story mode, unlocked characters and etc...) but the few times I played it in my friend´s house I liked it very much.
In terms of pure gameplay and presentation, nothing can beat Revenge. It had very colorful graphics and arenas, fast paced, effective grappling, and the full WCW roster at the height of the Monday Night Wars. Plus that intro was so sick. Best wrestling game of the 90s! One of the few games that made N64 worth having.
I love Smackdown Vs Raw 2008, first one that let you run in any direction, first with the ECW roster, first one with the crowd fighting bit by the announce tables and had an amazing soundtrack.

I think after a while; Graphics and Gameplay must be together to be at the top. I loved no mercy as a kid; but i also hated how AI can be so unfair. I lived in the era where World Tour, Revenge, Wrestle Mania, and No Mercy was the shit. But I can honestly say I agree with you on 08. It was like the first game where I'd feel like I was actually in a wrestling arena. It showed me that the games were getting better. Allowing multiple people to be in royal rumbles instead of only four people (despite the tossing out mode being crap). And the ability (on Xbox or PS 3) to add your own music just gives it extra depth (along with the extra details in creating characters). I had fun recreating characters I made in No Mercy and bringing them out of retirement after 7 years of being no where in the ring lol. But the only reason I give No Mercy the crown is because they had the ability to do special guest referee all day any time. Otherwise, I'd actually give these up to date games the better rating.
LilPrince Killa I think 2k14 had the best overall options; creative, match, & arena wise.(EVERY WRESTLEMANIA!) Though it takes sliders to bring the best out of 2k14
The N64 AKI games reign supreme to this day. "No Merce?" as we say it, will still get my brothers and friends together to this day to play some royal rumbles.

I have to agree with you man. The other games on this list are great, like SD HCTP, SD vs Raw 2006, WWF No Mercy, etc. However, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns is also a great game in its own right. Talk about customization, this game enabled you to edit your created wrestler's A.I. pattern, whether they'll go coward halfway into fatigue or go all out brawling, man it's insane. :)

WWE 2K14 had my favorite campaign mode. Playing through Wrestlemania 1-29 introduced me to wrestling and the history and changed what I thought of it. I am still a huge wresting fan to this day and that game is part of why I am.
DoR2 is criminally underrated. It's always my "go to" for a wrestling game and was an excellent complement to the gameplay style of the Smackdown games.

No surprise WWF No Mercy is top pick. I'm glad you mentioned the game deleting bug in the first batch of cartridges which I had. I actually mailed my bugged cartridge to THQ for the hell of it with a letter saying the damn thing is broke and amazingly, they actually sent back a new copy to me for no charge and no bugs. Very nice of them, too bad THQ is gone.
My favorite when I was younger was WCW Thunder for PS1. For the only simple feature of changing stables with every worker. It was fun putting Goldberg in the Wolfpac and Jericho in Raven's Flock.

It was the only game to that allowed that. And honestly, the only reason I put that as number one on the list. I created a specific wrestler that was a guest referee to handle specific wrestlemania matches. Also, since I was the best out of all my friends, I was just to be the referee and watch everyone do their matches, despite the fact that I'd try to resist the temptation to interfere. I was the best at resisting though, unlike everyone else. lol
+LilPrince Killa my favorite thing to do was have Paul bearer referee a match between undertaker and Kane LOL. I also enjoyed the clone a superstar mode. You could edit their profiles and I actually have Paul bear walk out with undertaker or cane. Undertaker and Kane were my favorite, just in case you could not tell. LOL
VrOOm1337 Only SvR game I know they had it was in the 2008 one. But you could only choose it as Triple H where you decide whether he wants to join Evolution or DX in a match between Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels. No other game gave you the option to freely be special guest referee other than WWF No Mercy.

What I loved about no mercy and now revanche is that it was so simple to learn everything and yet it delivered everything wrestling fans wanted .. fun factor was really high because of this .. I think that’s what new games need to do .

I like day of reckoning 1 better. The second one they introduced stamina and kind of ruined it for me. In the middle of a good match all of a sudden you couldn't do anything unless you just stood in the ring and did nothing for a good minute lol

I see you weren't a big fan of any of the PS1 Wrestling games. Like... Warzone, Attitude, Smackdown, Smackdown 2: Know Your Role, WCW Mayhem, Nitro and Thunder. ECW Hardcore Revolution. I guess all these games sucked huh lol... But when they came out were super addictive and so fun. Maybe you were more of a N64 guy. WrestleMania 2000 and No Mercy were amazing but I only got to play them at friends houses back then. I got them now but the PS1 Wrestling titles get crapped on. At least admit they were cool when they were released. .

Attitude was a great title, but overall its probably the only one that would be competitive with the titles chosen. The original Smackdown games were pretty bland, and all the WCW games were godawful even for their time.

Yes! the gamecube wrestling games are terribly underrated. Until 2k16, I've pretty much stuck with DOR 2. Loved that you could interrupt moves whereas you couldn't in the smackdown series, made the matches so much more intense.
I never was a fan of the series, despite even playing one of it's successors "Wrestle Kingdom" (PS2) that used the same game engine. Still too "arcady" for my taste (and horrible loading times). "Wrestle Kingdom 2" might have a kick ass roster with all the japanese stars and lots of legends, but still I didn't like the DoR/Wrestle Kingdom Engine so I didn't import this one.
Day one No Mercy owner here. We were devastated to unlock everything, only for our saved progress to be wiped out. But we always went ahead and did it all again, but the game was so awesome. (my brother, my cousins, and I actually bought the foam and plastic replica belts, and competed for them on the games, and this was by far, the best time we had)
Yep I had the flawed copy as well, can't tell you how many times I re did everything and re made my characters, since every few months it would randomly delete everything and I couldn't send it in because I got the game second hand. Wonder why I got it so cheap lol

No Mercy or HCTP? Also, No Mercy is like X-Seven (Great, but severly overrated) while HCTP is like XIX (Awesome, but either gets it's deserved praise (HCTP) or is criminally underrated (XIX).)
The way they did stamina mode in 06 was fucking dreadful, I was so sick of my guy falling to the floor after 4 moves, 07 still had it but it was bearable. I still turned it off in both though
GREAT list. As a fan who's been playing since the days of the NES, I can attest to how great wrestling games have been at times. However, I would have definitely had SVR 2007 instead of 2006. That being said, my list differs somewhat from this one, though most of the titles are the same. From my own personal experience, my favorite and most beloved wrestling game has always been and will always be WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role. As for other entries, my list would also have to include Day of Reckoning 2, WWE 2K14 (still the best of the 2K series in my humble opinion), Showdown: Legends of Wrestling 3, and WWE Legends of Wrestlemania.
That's the only WWE game I recall where you can actually create your own titantron. What happened to that? Granted, modding's still a thing, but it'd be great if 2k still included the feature nonetheless.
Loogy WWE 12 was the first one to have that. In 13 it was better working, though. You also had the highlight reel that you were able to use as a titantron, but it was also gone in 2k14.
Def Jam: Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight for NY were some pretty fun games. 2000, No Mercy, and Revenge were amazing games. I played the hell out of those when I was younger.

WWF No Mercy for the N64 was the best multiplayer wrestling game I had ever played. Having 4 people playing at the same time in a Rumble was ground breaking. Me and a friend 3D'ing my other friends through tables with the Dudley Boys. What an incredible console the N64 was. I nearly lost friends because of how competitive we were at Mario Party and don't get me started with Mario Kart 64. Those were some of the best days of my life. Wow, I didn't know that No Mercy was going to be #1. I figured there would have been a newer wrestling game which was better. No Mercy was the last wrestling game I played before I stopped watching wrestling.
Both No Mercy and HctP are great, but they are great for different reasons. I'm sure people exist that didn't like No Mercy. I'm not really one of them, but whatev. No Mercy has insane replayability with the championshihp mode with branching angles for every belt. Made each one feel special really. But what was really awesome about HctP was that despite having preset stories in the story mode, the character on the "villian" end would change up. So sometimes your CAWs would show up, which I still think is awesome to this day. Ah the power of no voice overs.
I agree 1,000,000,000%.... I still play no mercy when all my cousins come over. When you have 4 people the Royal rumbles, ladder matches, and no tag matches were just epic. I will say you did have fight for NY too low. That game is a classic as well
Dude that game was so much fun. It had only 8 characters as I recall but the gameplay was fast and fun. I played it a fair bit back in the day and I was really expecting it to show up in the list.
What about the original Smackdown and Smackdown 2: Know Your Role for the Sony PlayStation? I remember playing with both games when they first came out and the depth and customization of the games were incredible, not just for wrestling fans but for gamers in general. SM2 is also considered one of the highest selling wrestling games ever made as well.
Attitude on Dreamcast is easily the game I've played the most of. I still occasionally play it and have several VMUs full of created wrestlers, some I still try to reproduce today.
Smack Down 2 Know your role had by infinitely far the best story mode ever, not only u could play a superstar and his story line would revolve around it but u could create one of your own and interact with various storylines, and either be relevant or stay in the low card, you could also go thru a whole season mode, LITERAL season, with dates and names of the cities you were in and the whole listing of matches booked for the night and show which u could play each match if you wanted or watch AI vs AI OOOOR!!! just skip it and the results would be generated automatically, you could do that even with your own matches HELL while playing story mode a second player could jump in and play with the other superstar. AND if you had an alliance with lets say Eddie guerrero and he had to fight that night u had a randomly generated chance that your superstar (saying u created one) or one you pick to play, would enter and try to interfere in the match to help OR betray your friend, JESUS none of these games cant compare PLS get your shit together. New moves? New customization? pls all of them must improve on this but none like Smack Down 2 Know your role, even when you finished the goddamn year of season which is the whole story mode, you could keep playing the season FOREVER with all the random alliances and secret events repeating and randomizing on characters, you could even get attacked backstage and it would play in ur subsequent match not like the others u finish story mode you are done, start again and repeat the same history mode over and over and over again. HELL im not even done, you could create more characters, and if you let it to AI to manage them, you could see them being booked for matches titles and more, they would play their own part as superstars. I stopped playing games after the 3rd installment came for ps2 story mode of 1 year srsly?! fuck you THQ. No mercy PLS this is the big daddy of wrestling that story mode right there
I used to play wwf attitude toooooooo death when I was a kid. I remember my friends hating it because you had to press left, right, up down then X to do a move, but if you learned all the moves they were basically the same. It had blood that DRIPPED. and you could destroy an opponent to near death hahahahaha oh and edit the arena etc was cool as f**k

StylesisTNA Def Jam was a poor game really. Svr 2007 was actualy similar to Svr 2006 which is a good thing! But it's storylines and different match types and great rosters is what made it a top 10 if not top 5 game.
2K14 is the last good Wrestling game. Honestly 15 was such a disappointment when they cut out so many options, they cut out custom entrances, they cut out custom theme songs, they cut out many stipulations and game modes, made the Women's matches not really worth playing, but at least they got to showcase their photography skills. Same with 16, granted it goes back to the good ole' days, but that's not good at all when it doesn't have the good old match types and stipulations. Wheres the Hardcore title, and the 8 man ladder matches. Or my 2 v 2 v 2 Falls Count Anywhere backstage, on the street and in the boiler rooms and all that goodness. 2k18 is going to suffer the same fate despite the Hardy return.

100% agree. It has to be one of the most overrated games ever, especially since people keep saying it has aged well. I bought a n64 just to play no mercy since everyone keeps saying it's better than the amazing here comes the pain and I'm ready to sell it or throw it in garbage. I just don't get the fascination with it. It's got to be Nostalgia.
WWE 2K14 had my favorite campaign mode. Playing through Wrestlemania 1-29 introduced me to wrestling and the history and changed what I thought of it. I am still a huge wresting fan to this day and that game is part of why I am.

No surprise WWF No Mercy is top pick. I'm glad you mentioned the game deleting bug in the first batch of cartridges which I had. I actually mailed my bugged cartridge to THQ for the hell of it with a letter saying the damn thing is broke and amazingly, they actually sent back a new copy to me for no charge and no bugs. Very nice of them, too bad THQ is gone.

My favorite when I was younger was WCW Thunder for PS1. For the only simple feature of changing stables with every worker. It was fun putting Goldberg in the Wolfpac and Jericho in Raven's Flock.

It was the only game to that allowed that. And honestly, the only reason I put that as number one on the list. I created a specific wrestler that was a guest referee to handle specific wrestlemania matches. Also, since I was the best out of all my friends, I was just to be the referee and watch everyone do their matches, despite the fact that I'd try to resist the temptation to interfere. I was the best at resisting though, unlike everyone else. lol
+LilPrince Killa my favorite thing to do was have Paul bearer referee a match between undertaker and Kane LOL. I also enjoyed the clone a superstar mode. You could edit their profiles and I actually have Paul bear walk out with undertaker or cane. Undertaker and Kane were my favorite, just in case you could not tell. LOL

What I loved about no mercy and now revanche is that it was so simple to learn everything and yet it delivered everything wrestling fans wanted .. fun factor was really high because of this .. I think that’s what new games need to do .
Def jam vendeta was my favorite game growing up the story was fantastic and when FFNY came out I shit my pants trying to get my hands on it. Its one of the best games that isnt made for a WWE/WCW fan.

I see you weren't a big fan of any of the PS1 Wrestling games. Like... Warzone, Attitude, Smackdown, Smackdown 2: Know Your Role, WCW Mayhem, Nitro and Thunder. ECW Hardcore Revolution. I guess all these games sucked huh lol... But when they came out were super addictive and so fun. Maybe you were more of a N64 guy. WrestleMania 2000 and No Mercy were amazing but I only got to play them at friends houses back then. I got them now but the PS1 Wrestling titles get crapped on. At least admit they were cool when they were released. .

Attitude was a great title, but overall its probably the only one that would be competitive with the titles chosen. The original Smackdown games were pretty bland, and all the WCW games were godawful even for their time.

Yes! the gamecube wrestling games are terribly underrated. Until 2k16, I've pretty much stuck with DOR 2. Loved that you could interrupt moves whereas you couldn't in the smackdown series, made the matches so much more intense.
I never was a fan of the series, despite even playing one of it's successors "Wrestle Kingdom" (PS2) that used the same game engine. Still too "arcady" for my taste (and horrible loading times). "Wrestle Kingdom 2" might have a kick ass roster with all the japanese stars and lots of legends, but still I didn't like the DoR/Wrestle Kingdom Engine so I didn't import this one.
I was very confused that Day of Reckoning 2 didn't make the list... That game is way better than half the games on the list.
Day one No Mercy owner here. We were devastated to unlock everything, only for our saved progress to be wiped out. But we always went ahead and did it all again, but the game was so awesome. (my brother, my cousins, and I actually bought the foam and plastic replica belts, and competed for them on the games, and this was by far, the best time we had)
Yep I had the flawed copy as well, can't tell you how many times I re did everything and re made my characters, since every few months it would randomly delete everything and I couldn't send it in because I got the game second hand. Wonder why I got it so cheap lol

GREAT list. As a fan who's been playing since the days of the NES, I can attest to how great wrestling games have been at times. However, I would have definitely had SVR 2007 instead of 2006. That being said, my list differs somewhat from this one, though most of the titles are the same. From my own personal experience, my favorite and most beloved wrestling game has always been and will always be WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role. As for other entries, my list would also have to include Day of Reckoning 2, WWE 2K14 (still the best of the 2K series in my humble opinion), Showdown: Legends of Wrestling 3, and WWE Legends of Wrestlemania.

February 2018 and I'm looking lovingly at my beloved WWF No Mercy cartridge sitting on my game shelf right now.
WWF No Mercy for the N64 was the best multiplayer wrestling game I had ever played. Having 4 people playing at the same time in a Rumble was ground breaking. Me and a friend 3D'ing my other friends through tables with the Dudley Boys. What an incredible console the N64 was. I nearly lost friends because of how competitive we were at Mario Party and don't get me started with Mario Kart 64. Those were some of the best days of my life.

Both No Mercy and HctP are great, but they are great for different reasons. I'm sure people exist that didn't like No Mercy. I'm not really one of them, but whatev. No Mercy has insane replayability with the championshihp mode with branching angles for every belt. Made each one feel special really. But what was really awesome about HctP was that despite having preset stories in the story mode, the character on the "villian" end would change up. So sometimes your CAWs would show up, which I still think is awesome to this day. Ah the power of no voice overs.

What about the original Smackdown and Smackdown 2: Know Your Role for the Sony PlayStation? I remember playing with both games when they first came out and the depth and customization of the games were incredible, not just for wrestling fans but for gamers in general. SM2 is also considered one of the highest selling wrestling games ever made as well.

Smack Down 2 Know your role had by infinitely far the best story mode ever, not only u could play a superstar and his story line would revolve around it but u could create one of your own and interact with various storylines, and either be relevant or stay in the low card, you could also go thru a whole season mode, LITERAL season, with dates and names of the cities you were in and the whole listing of matches booked for the night and show which u could play each match if you wanted or watch AI vs AI OOOOR!!! just skip it and the results would be generated automatically, you could do that even with your own matches HELL while playing story mode a second player could jump in and play with the other superstar. AND if you had an alliance with lets say Eddie guerrero and he had to fight that night u had a randomly generated chance that your superstar (saying u created one) or one you pick to play, would enter and try to interfere in the match to help OR betray your friend, JESUS none of these games cant compare PLS get your shit together.

New customization? pls all of them must improve on this but none like Smack Down 2 Know your role, even when you finished the goddamn year of season which is the whole story mode, you could keep playing the season FOREVER with all the random alliances and secret events repeating and randomizing on characters, you could even get attacked backstage and it would play in ur subsequent match not like the others u finish story mode you are done, start again and repeat the same history mode over and over and over again.
HELL im not even done, you could create more characters, and if you let it to AI to manage them, you could see them being booked for matches titles and more, they would play their own part as superstars. I stopped playing games after the 3rd installment came for ps2 story mode of 1 year srsly?! fuck you THQ. No mercy PLS this is the big daddy of wrestling that story mode right there

I used to play wwf attitude toooooooo death when I was a kid. I remember my friends hating it because you had to press left, right, up down then X to do a move, but if you learned all the moves they were basically the same. It had blood that DRIPPED. and you could destroy an opponent to near death hahahahaha oh and edit the arena etc was cool as f**k

2K14 is the last good Wrestling game. Honestly 15 was such a disappointment when they cut out so many options, they cut out custom entrances, they cut out custom theme songs, they cut out many stipulations and game modes, made the Women's matches not really worth playing, but at least they got to showcase their photography skills. Same with 16, granted it goes back to the good ole' days, but that's not good at all when it doesn't have the good old match types and stipulations. Wheres the Hardcore title, and the 8 man ladder matches. Or my 2 v 2 v 2 Falls Count Anywhere backstage, on the street and in the boiler rooms and all that goodness. 2k18 is going to suffer the same fate despite the Hardy return.
