Become The Knight I remembered that word from when I was studying for the GRE. I thought I was going crazy??? Whatever, your vocabulary still owns mine.
@@BecomeTheKnight would highly recommend Electric Counterpoint III by Steve Reich (all 3 movements are stellar, but the 3rd is my favourite). Reich's work with repetition and minimalism was next level
My wife only knows the music I play in the house. She knows no popular pop music. So in the world I created that she and I live in, three of the most popular albums of 2019 are by Bad Religion, Mighty Mystic, Duel, Green Lung and Black Pumas. The popular "Grammys music" kind of becomes the "underground" scene to us.
Yeah and about how their pu**y’s the best. Also, in hip hop or rap the sex is right in my face. Case in point the Chris Brown’s song “Wobble up”. It’s just to in my face with sex.
It's crazy how many people I know these days who say "I'm not really into music" or "well, I like to dance so my favorite music is..." Music is one of the best spices of life. I can't imagine being a person who doesn't LOVE music like these aforementioned people.
Yeah it makes me wonder if all they listen to is the radio or whatever and don't really like anything on there and couldn't tell you the songs. Or the flip side, "oh yeah I listen to everything", so do you listen to [metal band], [metal band], or [metal band]? "Oh na I don't like metal", oh what about [90s alt rock band] "na they're too old." Oh ok so what [modern rock band], never heard of them. So what they really mean is they listen to everything on the radio.
@@HazmanFTW people like that REALLY annoy me. Once I asked a girl what type of music do you like and she of course said everything so I told her I loved heavy metal. Now she doesn't talk with me since she thinks I'm mentally insane Ave worship the devil. You know why most people love pop? "Because it's catchy!" Where 👏🏼 is 👏🏼 the 👏🏼 meaning 👏🏼 in 👏🏼 the 👏🏼 lyrics?!
I've seen so many schools cut music programs first...because it's "not a priority". Same with art and media programs....it's pretty sad. I'm like, do you listen to music? Do you watch movies? Do you have a photo hanging in your home? Well, it's a priority.
I was REALLY looking forward to taking music theory this year in high school, but apparently they didn’t offer it last year. I hope so much that they didn’t cut it this year too :(
Jael Smith thankfully you have something at least. I guess perhaps you could teach yourself theory online if you had the time, although it would probably take twice the effort. There’s orchestra and jazz band at my school, although you have to have already played an instrument for two years to join. I’ve been homeschooled my entire life, I don’t know the violin and no one can teach me XD I guess I’m pretty much screwed.
My middle school (thank god I’m in highschool now) cut the band class a few weeks into the year because the teacher left, and they didn’t even bother trying to get a teacher. We were very lucky because my private tutor actually ended up being the teacher pf the class and he’s very good.
Box tube Hate to see a fellow lifelong homeschooler get the big screw on a music deal. Shit sucks, man. Here’s to hoping you get a better deal in the second quarter of life!
Another big problem is diversity within top 40 music. There has always been pop music since the 50's. However, pop also meant popular music for any genre. Top 40 music within the 90's for example, were extremely diverse. Now we only see one genre being represented by top 40 radio.
Honestly, it's not just mainstream stuff. Underground music has been sounding pretty same-y as well. Seems like once one band has found something that works everyone copies it. Take Teen Sucide for example, by 2014 so many bands copied that style it was crazy.
@@idonteatcheetos You're off. I'd say the underground and mid-ground (for lack of a better term) scene have been booming. Last year alone, we got Wide Awaaake, Joy as an Act of Resistance, Girl With Basket of Fruit (maybe from this year), You Won't Get What You Want, a re-release of Twin Fantasy...
As a member of gen Z and a musician myself, I can't stand to listen to modern music played on the radio it numbs me and keeps me from thinking, I feel like modern pop music lacks the power to inspire. These so called artists really honestly are not artists many are egotists who push lukewarm products which many times is not even their handy work. Keep going Mike I like listening to your points, and well I lost where I was going so take care man.
@Sios as far as america is concerned, people aren't trying to become millionaires, they're trying to survive, and they think if they work at it hard enough, they won't just survive they may become rich some day. (unlikely. the ones who are already rich, don't want to expand their club, don't want you to join their ranks. i mean, it's less money for them, why would they?)
Shut up and go seek out good modern music. There are more virtuous in any genre than any time before, and they’re a click away, since when does anyone listen to radio anymore?. There are plenty of young and old artists creating great genuine music and making a career and following. Go seek it out and stop bitching about the crap that will, and has always existed!
@@dashsizon4253 I don't know what exactly you are trying to say but I have been looking for artists. I recently found steven wilson and have been listening to his catalog, and shout out to mike for introducing me to snarky puppy, been really diging it. And why I listen to the radio is because I am subjected to it at work I don't choose to listen to it. Anyway though dude rock on.
Im pretty sure im gen z (2001), i find i tend to listen to 2000's music the most, and its not because i was born in then but because i really like the post grunge/nu metal style of rock and metal. As well as a fair bit of 90's and 2010's stuff and even some classical or ramonatic era pieces. But there are popular artists that i think are really good, though thats subjective, idk if they're on the radio or not cos i dont listen to the radio but i assume some of them are.
I’m 14 years old and I got into metal a little over a year ago. I can absolutely confirm that the reason people like the mainstream music is because that’s what they grew up with. My little brother is a good example of this; he likes pop music because he hasn’t considered the possibility that he may like other types of music. They’re never directly told this, but kids essentially have to accept that popular music is “good music”, which, many times, is far from the truth. Once under that impression, it’s really hard to enjoy any music that isn’t what you’re used to. Before I was a metalhead, I found myself liking dubstep, actually. That’s because I grew up playing (admittedly, *way* too much) Geometry Dash. It’s what I was familiar with. I had looked into metal a bit during the time I liked dubstep, one occasion in particular comes to mind when I exclusively listened to Ozzy Osbourne for 2 weeks, but ultimately, I ended up going back to dubstep. It actually took the influence of friends for me to actually get deeper into the metal game. I one friend I have specifically had a dad who got him into metallica, then the friend got me into metallica. That’s the first time I actually enjoyed music more than what I was familiar with. So, will the mainstream heal its impression of good music? Absolutely not, unless some huge influence manages to open everyone’s eyes. Good music (not exclusively metal, just music deserving of the popular status) may never come to light in the mainstream. I guess it’s good that there will always be communities for each type of music to keep at least a fraction of the genre’s formal glory intact.
On a more serious note, I think it is both a blessing and a curse that music is more accessible nowadays than ever before (really, the same can be said about information in general). You can go on any streaming service and have instant access to millions of songs. On one hand, I enjoy being able to listen to pretty much any song I can think of whenever I feel like it. On the other hand, I also think people put more value into music when you had to actually go out of your way and go to a record shop to buy the CD (or whatever medium) to be able to listen to it. That way, you're more likely to actually listen to the whole album several times instead of skipping from one random song to another. I kind of miss the magic of bringing a new CD home and listening to it while browsing through the booklet to read the lyrics. But, I don't agree with the people claiming that there's no good music produced these days and that nobody uses real instruments etc... There's plenty of amazing new music out there, but it can be hard to find among all of the mass produced crap. Sadly, most people will not go through the effort of digging through the bad to get to the good stuff. That's why I love the song suggestion streams so much. On that note, there's one solution which can fix this whole music issue - the David Fields Band.
A band by the name of Whitechapel released an album that is considered to not be the norm for them. But it's just as good, if not better than their old material. There still is good music in the world; as you said, it's a matter of sifting through the shit to find what's worth listening to.
Most music is awful today because its purpose is not to express the artists emotions or to tell a story its all about mass producing albums every year making money or telling me how woke or satanic you are. Good albums take time to come out look at MJ he had true passion for his work. I mostly listen to power metal so i dont have this problem
I remember watching a TV show where they were calling this lady “old” for having CD’s and I was like “Wait... holy shit everything is changing before my eyes.”
You're my long lost brother.... I 100% agree man seriously. We are the change. If everyone would move on it and see how important it is to fix this problem, would be a good start.
I am a Gen Z person. My dad always likes to play '80s rock/metal music in the car and on the record player and such, and so I grew up on it, though whenever I went to listen to music I would listen to rap, or maybe pop, or dubstep. Somebody sent me Master of Puppets when I was 12 and I listened to it and immediately fell in love. I have never looked back.
The fact is nobody actually listens to music but more of a backtrack to the things we do. No more does people sit in front of the TV and wait for their bands/musicians to play so they could hear the song. We are either going to play music in the background like while playing video games or while doing something else and it has come to a point where no one actually listens to what the music is but surely we do pay attention to lyrics but not the instrumentation or the structure of the song. Another reason is that music has become more of a trend. Many people just gulp up what the billboards wants us to have. Like I had a friend who when Tailor Swift's Me when released said it was trash but then changed his mind when it topped the charts. Hence this instance was just enough for us to know that the "good" music that people/industry refers is not always(99% nowadays) good but you it is what they say the "thing" is. And thanks Mike for all the content. Rock on!
A massive about of people (esp kids) don't have real opinions just follow trends and what's popular it's sad. Some people do use music as a background thing... I do I suppose. But it's a very crucial part to a lot of activities I do...hell listening to music is the main focus when I'm smoking weed lol.
i think that the first few times (or at the very least, the very first time) ye listen to a music it should be alocated its own time, place, and focus. just the music and ye. that, i think, is how ye can truly assess whether ye like it or not. (then on further analysis does what mike suggests us to do which actually think why exactly do we like it, i suppose.) after that it's kinda a fair game. i.e., whether thats a song ye'd like to listen why doing smth else or not. personally i like cleaning while listening (and singing ... and dancing ....) to music lol.
I agree on the mental health and introspection point. I tend to be an album listener, and specific albums really helped me through specific crappy times. Obviously, those were not pop albums. Sometimes, I will listen to a little more pop music for a change-up and I actually notice myself getting depressed and can't figure out why...I think it's because I'm lacking that emotional release when I listen to garbage. It does nothing for me on a personal level. It's noise.
There's some great pop albums, though. Granted, the pop albums that I'm thinking of that got me through hard times are almost all from the previous century.
@@TheGeorgeD13 I know what you mean, and there used to be more quality pop music. I think it's just gotten harder and harder to find over time. I guess in the frame of my original comment, I was thinking recent pop.
Taylor Swift is leagues above Cardi B. She at least uses real instruments and writers her own stuff. Cardi B and souless music with nothing at all 'real' about it, be it instruments or even putting in work themselves. Pop always had shit in it, do you think Paula Abdul was highbrow or gimmicks like Starship? Not saying music on the whole hasn't gone downhill but it started before 2000.
Couldn’t agree more. I am a 14 year old but like honestly the crap being put out really boils my blood. And people like Cardi b really puts me off music. Like I never go on the top charts on Spotify anymore because it’s filled with crap. So I stick with a few artists. I listen to at the most 5 artists everyday because I feel safe in that bubble because to me the rest is crap
Zak Sharman yeah I know and I know I should try do that more but like I feel trapped in my little bubble. Not to seem like “oh I don’t like the new music” yes I do like some new music but with Cardi b topping the charts I’ve pretty much given up😂 you can tell I’m bias against her
Zak Sharman dont worry I have. My taste goes from Taylor Swift to slipknot. My favorite band is I prevail. I listen to the rock/ metal side more but I still have a place for pop in my hesrt
Katie McDiarmid Ice Nine Kills Gorillaz Daft Punk Celldwelller Polyphia Polaris BMTH MAXIMUM THE HORMONE I’m sure you’ve already heard of most of those, but give some a shot :) Especially MAXIMUM THE HORMONE, if you like Slipknot. They’re not too similar, but they’re music is really fun
I’m so glad you mentioned that some younger people rather listen to older music than the crap put out nowadays. Because more often than not we’re made fun of even if we’re not absolute dicks about it. I’m one of those young people and since my early teens I’ve been listening to older music mostly because actual music is so empty. Now I’m 22 and am very much out of the “system”. Out of the current trends etc. It can be quite alienating tbh
@@prateek752 I guess it could be, but I would say computers can only emulate instruments. And also if the music is made from a computer there is no heart or soul in the music.
@@jakefromstatefarm1195 exactly, rick beato also explains how that basically rips away the heart of the music like a producer using pro tools to artificially create music
I like “computer-music” as well as music made with tangible instruments. Good electronic music exists, but it is sadly overshadowed by crappy electronic music such as mainstream pop.
Music started dying when the industry cared more about image than actual talent. There are great artist in the 1960s and 1970s that would have never made it today because they didn't have the right "look".
He will probably note that it sounds cool and is a very "dope" sounding album, but that a lot of it sounds similar. I love Tool, but I agree that it's a fair criticism.

Speaking for generation Z. My mom didn’t even force me to enjoy classic stuff, in fact I grew up with mostly pop because of my sister. However right as I had the ability to develop my own taste in music I immediately got an Elvis Presley cd.
Metal rock blues and country still have really good artists around you just gotta look man pop is pop it's just about money but these genres that are less popular are still making some good music
Music has always been my medicine and the reason why I love oldies like Elton John, Queen, and Bon Jovi (I know you don't like them sorry) is because it reminds me of my childhood.
If i make an argument like this i get a "hurr grr yOu oNLy LikE oLd mUsiC" That's not true, i think there's some pretty good stuff going on at the moment, just that it isn't in the mainstream
This is also my feeling. Although I had to defend from both sides : those who like only the newer "stuff" generally for vapid reasons and those who don't see the good gems laying around and don't want to search for them/put everything in the same bag no latter what and just label everything as shit (one of the greatest laughs I had in my life was when someone started to say that "2000's rock is just a bunch of first world people whining about their life being sad" and calling Ghost B.C overrated and just a moment later praise Nirvana. I don't particularly hate or love Nirvana but this moment was pure gold to me)
*ahem* a person in the gym i go to wore a “Ride the Lightning” shirt. *The Call of Ktulu plays* him: “i can’t stand this music.” “why are there no words” in conclusion: society is doomed and i’m considering suicide. (in my opinion, that song speaks more than words ever can.)
I thought Ktulu is the god of end of the world. So, if anyone is concerning suicide they must be Metallica fans. Yeah, Metallica hasn't made a good album since 1991. And Iron Maiden has had even a longer pause.
Why in the hell would a gym play Call of Ktulu? There are plenty of more popular, better workout songs like Master of Puppets, Creeping Death, Fight Fire with Fire, yet they chose a relatively obscure (outside of the metal community) instrumental that is more slow and dark? Sounds like bullshit
There are tons of great artists still doing that, you just won't hear them on the radio. Part of Mike's point, I guess, but the fact remains there is some awesome stuff out there. You just have to go look for it. There are even some certifiable geniuses at work in this era: Tuomas Holopainen, Jari Maenpaa, and Arjen Anthony Lucassen, to name 3 :).
@@madddog6790You are right. yes, there are. Unfortunately they just don't tend to be commercially successful as much. And I have to admit "garbage music" isn't new, it's been around for a while.
This is why some in gen z and millennial’s have been trying to resurrect grunge , what feels like the last big time a genre was about something more than words and a “magic in the air “ with it
and it tends to not talk so much about getting laid lol. So many hair metal guys had great voices but a lot of the lyrics were a bit cringy if you look back on it.
" I think it's pretty obvious that the West is on the decline right now..." Holy shit... Even Mike the Music Snob can see the absolute and unmistakable degredation of Western civilization. The music a society produces always reflects the values and spirit of that society. If music is declining, then so are we...
You made a point about music becoming a background piece to some other activity, what is your opinion on Ambient music (for example Brian Enos Music for Airports) that is basically designed to be in the background?
@@ruedestrae8199 That would be stupid, because especially in the case of Brian Eno, that's all music baby. There's nothing that is just a collection of sounds.
Would you include Nox Arcana in that, because I find that really good background music for writing. It also synchs up really well with what I'm currently working on when I run it through a text-to-speech engine.
Your Brian Eno example is a good example of background music but I wouldn't consider ALL ambient music to be that. It's a style of its own that has it's own kwirks and ways of writing. I suggest looking into Winged Victory for the Sullen and Emeralds as an example. Those two projects have a lot going on in the songs (winged victory having some of my favorite guitar drones).
Brilliant. I know nothing about music theory. What matters to me is music that evokes a “mood”. Joy, despair, grandeur. That led me to ‘70’s prog/art rock bands like ELP, Yes, Genesis, Focus, Roxy Music and they led me to classical music. Long live music that can make you feel.
I think the feeling that older music is respected more comes from the fact that time gives certain artists and bands the credit they deserve and leaves crappy popular artists by the wayside as people have time to reflect on whether it desrves to stand the test of time or not, people like cardi b will not be remembered as good musicians in a generation or two i believe people will for the most part see her stuff and alot of popular swill for what it was which was a ridiculous distraction tactic and a cheapening of the art form (at least i hope so)
There is definitely a cultural divide with popular music. If Mike sees this, I hope he makes a video about said cultural divide. The music that creates an environment where people like you get alienated.
Same with me. I don't ever talk about music with them. We literally talk about everything except music cause they know we won't understand what the other one is talking about.
It's funny you mentioned sitting down and listening. I put on a Brand New album last night and just sat there and listened. I was actually thinking about how it was the kind of album you have to really listen to in order to enjoy it. I know how pretentious that sounds, but there really is a mood and soundscape that can only be enjoyed by putting the record on with good speakers and just letting it wash over you. With that being said, I'll often work with EDM or lofi hip hop beats in the background because they allow me to focus on my work while still giving me something pleasant to listen to.
Damn. I remember when bands like Brand New were being made fun of and critiqued a lot like the pop music of today. Maybe I'm just old af but it makes me realize art is cyclical
I am glad to find someone that shares my point of view. I'd like a recurrence of another kind of music, or a new kind of music, made popular so my generation knows what real music is. You should do a video that analyzes the opposing side's argument and has a debate about it.
I'm born in 2000 and I can definitely agree that music has gone to the shits. I personally enjoy music from the 60's-90's I still enjoy older music than the 60's but most of by music comes from that period.
I was born in the 80 and 90's music sucked for me. 2000's is where you have more diversity, and a real prog, metal and hardocre punk revivals. 2000 underground and indie scene were better than frickin grunge and rap metal. In the 90 you were traped between Nirvana/Oasis and Korn/Limp Biscuit, and anyone who tryed to be diferent was not in the mainstream. I agree that the best acts of the 2000 where born in the 90, but they werent mainstream bands.
I hate modern day rap it all sounds the same mostly I like older rap when I was much younger but then I started to hate rap due to how overused some beats were.
I work out a lot, and my workout playlist is about 95% hard rock/heavy metal, with the other 5% being rap/hip hop. When I'm in the gym, I actually do actively pay attention to the music. I listen to the lyrics, guitar, drums, etc., And it enhances my ability to exercise by giving me a burst of energy. So I would consider that active listening, but I see your point. Background noise is one function of music nowadays, which is possibly a reason that the quality has declined.
It's a very sad time and I refer almost exclusively to commercial music. Another big issue is the constant repetition of songs. As if they're not bad enough already if you listen to a standard popular radio station you're going to hear the same stuff multiple times per day. Even the best music I don't have a desire to play on repeat over and over in a short time period. It's that basic rule of too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Another disturbing trend is this importance being given to shows such as AGT etc where they try give the impression that they are finding the best of the best artists. The sad truth is that's far from it.
Music education is a joke these days. Take it from a student. My school just lost millions in their budget. What do they do? They continue giving more and more money to football (new turf, equipment, etc.), put up some more school pride crap, while on the other side of things, the music program is drowning, and teachers can’t afford to replace broken equipment half the time. And if that isn’t bad enough, students aren’t even required to take an art or music class in 4 years of high school. If it weren’t for private education elsewhere, I wouldn’t have had a music class in maybe 4 years. But hey, at least the football boys get some nice new grass, right?
Band was easily my favorite class in high school. Marching band was an amazing time every year hanging out with my friends during breaks during rehearsals and playing at competitions. My junior year show was easily my favorite musically. Our show was called the art of war and mixed themes from the first god of war game, mars, and chester
There’s lots of good music out there right now but you have to look for it since it isn’t mainstream. As a rock fan, I do not listen to modern rock radio, not because I’m an elitist but because modern rock radio is overblown with Imagine Dragons, Twenty One Pilots, Coldplay, etc. Modern metal, on the other hand, still has plenty of flair. If we can make it mainstream again, music will be fixed. For now, the industry needs to stop caring about image and start caring about talent.
I love your third solution to fix music. That was the one that stood out most to me as I really do feel like most people don't enjoy music to a level that is possible. There is so much music that can satisfy or sooth real emotions your feeling and most people won't be able to experience that.
@@Lightning-gg5iu unfortunately yes,and i'm always searching for them, there is lot of gold yet to be discovered in underground.I think people are to lazy to find something they love so they settle for for less.
Yo 15 that loves rock and metal (especially Tool), but I don't criticise modern music, just most of it (good music still exist, just in the underground)
This reminds me of a video that Punk Rock MBA just uploaded a week ago. I think everyone here should watch that one about this very similar topic. It's about new music vs old music. Except PRMBA says the opposite of Mike. I would like for everyone to give their thoughts on that video too. Because I think both videos bring up interesting points.
It's only about short term bottom line. You won't have visionaries anymore...people like Ahmet Eurtegan who signed both Ray Charles and Led Zeppelin...he saw longevity in these acts, even long after they've split up or died. That's excellent long term foresight, which also means more for the bottom line too. Also, the method of consuming music is different...you spend far more to make a record than you will for its sales. Spotify is killing the industry.
Probably one of the best videos you ever made. Great topic, sometimes I felt like you're speaking my thoughts, lol. I spread the word of every artists I think is good, like everyday. Considering this, it could really help more than buying stuff. (Even though I spend money on them as much as I'm able.) Spreading the word, keep rewatching their videoclips, keeping them right on the spot are the best we can do.
I feel what you are saying, a couple of weeks ago I went to a Beatles tribute concert and it was so amazing, I felt as if I had been transported to the 60s, I also got to speak to a man that grew up listening to The Beatles & Rolling Stones records, when music can unite people no matter the differences they may have, that for me is good music 🎼😊
I agree that music that is more popular than music in the massive umbrella of rock music is going down the shitter at an alarming rate and I was born in 2003 with both of my parents mainly listening to A7X,Disturbed,In This Moment,Halestorm, etc. I agree with you because most of my classmates consume this "music" that is popular and I've heard it for time to time and I think it's shit compared to pop, rap, etc. of the '80s and '90s also my parents basically listens to anything that she likes it doesn't matter what genre
I would love to share my musical taste with others but I'm literally surrounded by either pop/rap listeners or people who don't give a shit what they're listening too 🙄
Share it with us. It's honestly kinda hard to find the good stuff nowadays, we all need some good recommendations to rinse our ears from the music playing on the radio.

I can be listening to one song/album and be going off and on with how much I focus on it, just because that's how my brain works. I still prefer good music over the exact stuff you are talking about here. I probably listen to some (just under the rock genre), I prefer the stuff that gives more depth and meaning. I used to focus primarily on lyrics, as one of my big hobbies is writing. Stumbling upon UA-cam channels that talk about music, as well as (no joke) a mobile music game I fell in love with (because it actually has fantastic music), helped me start paying closer attention to the instrumentals. You have really gotten me to understand it better and listen to it more critically-- you really solidified my attention and appreciation of that part of the music, beyond the poetry (good or bad) of the lyrics. Thanks for that. It's been pretty eye-opening to go through the things I've enjoyed and see the qualities that make me like them. Even if I dont understand most of the technical jargon...
A lot of very valid points. The main problem is technology and how music is consumed, it’s hard to become attached to an album when you can’t touch it.
It’s simple Mike To fix pop More Focus on how talented a artist is based on how their voice stands out in long range and harmonics And people who can evolve their style and not stay the same And not about how marketable A said artist is in terms of ticket sales reused samples and merchandise Talent itself will draw much more And also less voice auto tune And relying on a catchy beat to hide the fact that some said vocals suck without a beat Then again it won’t happen because of the lizard people in Hollywood and Music industry I listen to older stuff from the 70s to late 2000s of Rock and modern rock of today with bands like Slipknot Fever 333 BMTH Bad Wolves And I Prevail
This is my favorite video you’ve ever made. Minute 13 of this video is one of my favorite minute of a UA-cam video ever. Thank you for finally saying what I’ve thought forever, you’re giving the unheard a voice. Great video
As a first step to a brighter future can we please start a movement to stop shaming rock acts like Nickelback and start shaming people for listening to Drake, Cardi and Lil Pump? How is it more socially acceptable to listen to these acts? Because rock fans shamed the gateway music of young rockfans for decades and now the young fans listen to rap because they don't get a hard time for it... If you want people to know rock is better then shame this trap shit instead of gateway bands. I'm all for championing the old stuff, but the old supremists are what killed rock and made it unappealing for young people for so long that society has moved away from it.
Might be a bit of a strange suggestion, but how about a video on artists staying power. Most pop artists having a few good years and then vanishing into obscurity. Then for example, compare it to Iron Maiden breaking the attendance record at Rock In Rio almost 3 decades into their career. And people say metal is still considered underground (Like you mentioned when reacting to the kids reacting to maiden)
I went to 3 Lalapaloozas. There were some undiscovered nobodys called Rage Against the Machine playing on the side stage. Everyone who steped on either stage was brilliant, those days are gone.
Excellent video Mike, yes modern music, especially modern pop and rap is garbage, and it’s getting worse. The problem is, performers, singers etc are now being promoted on image (ie.what they look like), rather than their actual talent. Too many pop singers are manufactured, and rely too heavily on auto tune, and many of them lip sync at what’s supposed to be a live performance, where people have paid large amounts of money for concert tickets. Although I’m more into classic rock, metal etc, it doesn’t mean I don’t like other genres, no, I don’t mind some pop music and some rap (the more politically based rap like Grand Master Flash, Ice-T). The issue I have, is that the commercial radio stations (I no longer listen to commercial radio), shove crappy music down our throats 24/7, and that they don’t give genuinely talented musicians any airplay. How do we fix this?, just my opinion, but I think both the commercial radio stations need to start promoting musicians (not manufactured pop stars and rappers), based on talent, NOT image. Once again, excellent video Mike, and an accurate summation on the crappy state of modern music.
Master Yoda I think the general public and demographic is also a part of the problem... Most of the younger people right now ( people around my age ) prefer to listen to popular shitty artists because they’re either cool or “the beat is sick”
Great video and great points. One more thing I can add is if you have a music education and want to see the music scene change, try making your own music. It's really easy to sit there and criticize everything you hear, but if you can actually produce what you think is "good music", that will give you way more authority. I always try to write my own music because it's a way for me to express myself in an ambiguous way, plus I can show it to my friends and they all can enjoy it. Obviously, I'm not gonna be the next Metallica or anything, but I think if everyone in the music community puts their heads together and both makes good, expressive, sophisticated music, and promotes other music that they find to contain all of those traits, we can maybe bring back a little bit of what used to make music so good.
Great vid. What's funny is.. Due to the internet and home studios, there are probably higher amounts of great music being produced today than any other time in history.. It's just sad that it's hidden and you have to dig super deep to find it because it may not be commercial enough for mass consumption 😕

Well, that effort of going and buying a record seems to have transferred to digging for diamonds today.

Damn. Master of Puppets made me also fall in love with metal. One of my friend showed it to me and I was like: "This shit is cool".
@@flyingdart9819 same my father showed it to me when I was 10. I instantly fell in love with what I was hearing
Rock on!
I usually play music while I'm doing something else but sometimes I also lay in bed.
Most people aren’t familiar with the charts, only people who care about it, how old are they? They are just a stan possibly.
It's noise.
Very well written! I couldn’t agree more.
Garbage is actually the name of a band, and a good one at that.
There's some great pop albums, though. Granted, the pop albums that I'm thinking of that got me through hard times are almost all from the previous century.

Not Mike, but I would assume he does not consider it music, but simply sound.
I love ambient music as an accompaniment to tasks or as soft background.
Brilliant. I know nothing about music theory. What matters to me is music that evokes a “mood”. Joy, despair, grandeur. That led me to ‘70’s prog/art rock bands like ELP, Yes, Genesis, Focus, Roxy Music and they led me to classical music.
Long live music that can make you feel.
you would definitely love Muse
@@man0_n3gra38 i do love Muse! Great band
I think the feeling that older music is respected more comes from the fact that time gives certain artists and bands the credit they deserve and leaves crappy popular artists by the wayside as people have time to reflect on whether it desrves to stand the test of time or not, people like cardi b will not be remembered as good musicians in a generation or two i believe people will for the most part see her stuff and alot of popular swill for what it was which was a ridiculous distraction tactic and a cheapening of the art form (at least i hope so)
It's true I'm 18 and I feel like an outcast with my friends when it comes to music because I listen to mainly classic rock and heavy metal

@@sethhansen4454 yes I would love to see what Mike has to say about this
It's funny you mentioned sitting down and listening.
Maybe I'm just old af but it makes me realize art is cyclical
nostalgia is a very powerful thing, music that was thought of as mindless crap is suddenly thought of as fun and light hearted
Grunts, growls, groans, screams...so our ancestors listened to death metal? Time to get in touch with my roots!
Bloody roots!

I personally enjoy music from the 60's-90's
I still enjoy older music than the 60's but most of by music comes from that period.
Same. I was born in 2000 and most of the stuff i listen to is 1980-1999 and some underground metal from today is good to
Kyle Adendorff same
Disagree, for hip hop these two decade are lot more important than any decade.
Thank god there are some great musicians nowadays, just sad that they don't get as displayed as they would deserve
Modern music, especially rap, literally makes me angry when i hear it XD

I work out a lot, and my workout playlist is about 95% hard rock/heavy metal, with the other 5% being rap/hip hop. When I'm in the gym, I actually do actively pay attention to the music. I listen to the lyrics, guitar, drums, etc., And it enhances my ability to exercise by giving me a burst of energy. So I would consider that active listening, but I see your point. Background noise is one function of music nowadays, which is possibly a reason that the quality has declined.
Buckethead released 32 official albums and 275 in Pikes form. What else do you need from music? I am signing off.
We've been declining/devolving since smart phones and social media.
Devo said we were de-evolving as humans and they were right. Whip it good!

In my district you have to have 2 music credits to graduate.
Wish me luck on AP music theory next year lol

This reminds me of a video that Punk Rock MBA just uploaded a week ago. I think everyone here should watch that one about this very similar topic. It's about new music vs old music. Except PRMBA says the opposite of Mike. I would like for everyone to give their thoughts on that video too. Because I think both videos bring up interesting points.
wow, this video sums it up pretty good, should be called 'music Bible' or something like that
Industry standards are low, very low... Shame 😞
It's all about how much money you can make...
I'm hoping it will bounce back at some point...
Get Rid OF The Big Recording Labels.
This is an extremely important video, thank you
I feel what you are saying, a couple of weeks ago I went to a Beatles tribute concert and it was so amazing, I felt as if I had been transported to the 60s, I also got to speak to a man that grew up listening to The Beatles & Rolling Stones records, when music can unite people no matter the differences they may have, that for me is good music 🎼😊
Yep, totally agree. I never listen to anything modern. I've just given up turning on the radio.
I'm okay with Ms Hale until I listen to the lyrics.
You are so damn right. I'm 15 and me and my friend listen to music from the 60,70,80ies and we can relate to you.

There are only 2 stages of emotions. "Lame" and "lit".
Prove me wrong.
Many people say "trash" as well
“Whack”
In the UK there are 2 more:
"Tune, bruw!" and "Yaaaas Kween!"
A lot of very valid points. The main problem is technology and how music is consumed, it’s hard to become attached to an album when you can’t touch it.
It's one reason why i write my own stuff now. I write what I wanna listen to, which isnt pop lol

It’s simple Mike
To fix pop
More Focus on how talented a artist is based on how their voice stands out in long range and harmonics
And people who can evolve their style and not stay the same
And not about how marketable
A said artist is in terms of ticket sales reused samples and merchandise
Talent itself will draw much more
And also less voice auto tune
And relying on a catchy beat to hide the fact that some said vocals suck without a beat
Then again it won’t happen because of the lizard people in Hollywood and Music industry
I listen to older stuff from the 70s to late 2000s of Rock and modern rock of today with bands like Slipknot Fever 333 BMTH Bad Wolves And I Prevail
MR YTC those are some kickass modern bands, fever are my fave

Great video and articulate. Thank you!!! I think listening to old and good music from other culturess when I was young helped too?
Might be a bit of a strange suggestion, but how about a video on artists staying power.
Most pop artists having a few good years and then vanishing into obscurity. Then for example, compare it to Iron Maiden breaking the attendance record at Rock In Rio almost 3 decades into their career. And people say metal is still considered underground (Like you mentioned when reacting to the kids reacting to maiden)
I agree with you on the Vox repetitiveness theory. It is too much repeating gets boring.
The problem is the entire culture of entertainment.... Sports, music, film and television... No one can say more without being cast as rascist...
