Pink Floyd is as much rock royalty as the Eagles, Stones, Metallica, McCartney and them (regardless if you like them or not).
However Roger Waters alone did not have the massive success someone like McCartney after going solo. So I can see how Waters himself wouldn't be considered

I smiled when I saw MetallicA included in such an esteemed grouping. They actually opened for the Stones.
pink floyd should be way above metallica and mccartney honestly it's no contest.
They fail to mention the amount of people who buy the shirts. Why do so many people buy Pink Floyd shirts? I don't get it, it's not even people who are fans of the band.

Great video but Pink Floyd definitely had a HUGE influence on rock n roll. They are one of the first prog bands and they're pretty unique. I'm pretty sure they contributed more than the eagles, billy joel etc

I have never listened or have wanted to listen to a Depeche Mode song.
Conor Murphy I had never even heard of them till now.
@@conormurphy4328 Their most passable song is their most popular one, Personal Jesus
Depeche Mode rules. Really atmospheric and catchy songs. Their albums are masterpieces and flirts with prog and alternative. "Violator" is fucking incredible. In the last half of the 80s and first half of the 90s they were really artistic and consistently released solid top to bottom albums. A perfect nighttime drive band.
@@mathiaskjrgard5284 Thank you! Depeche Mode are amazing! Songs of Faith and Devotion is amazing as well. Dave Gahan and Martin Gore are a legendary duo.
Despite your bashing of my favorite band Depeche Mode, this was definitely one of the most entertaining video on your list, you rock brotha!!!

You were scaring me towards the end of the video. It gave me childhood flashbacks.
I like Depeche Mode and I’m still shocked they were this high on the list!
For me, listening to their songs is an almost meditative experience. The smooth, deep, and in a way robotic vocals plus the soft, spacey electronic instrumentation relaxes me like very little other music can while at the same time not being slow or boring (in my opinion anyway). Plus I really dig the spooky, ominous sounding melodies they use in a lot of their songs.
Mediocrity pays.

Its the singers haunting voice man. Little 15, the vocals and content are amazing this comes from a fellow music snob. Haha
I think the sentence about U2 having the spirit of America meant more about capitalism and making money than the actual culture
I think it's also because of the halftime show of the superbowl from U2. It was a couple months after 9/11, America was down. And U2 lifted it up. When Bono shows the American flag under his sleave, it cries out emotion and hope for America after 9/11.
Depeche Mode's Violator is one of the best records of all time imo. Wonderfully produced, quite moody and ambiental, great lyrics and vocals. You should give it a try!
Did you put Ed Sheeran's GoT cameo pic just to piss me off? I was trying to forget about that.
Albums sales or streaming hits don't mean a thing anymore. It's all about touring. These artists know that.
We live in a world where everything is downloaded or listened to for free. They have to tour to survive in the industry.
Dude, pink floyd is probably theeeee most important rock band ever. They pioneered prog and psychedelic genres, the concept album and were developing mixing technique back when most bands were releasing forgettable love songs. Show some respect.

U2 at number one? U2? I haven't heard anything regarding U2 since 2010 ffs :D
Some people just look at the U.S. market. For instance, there was one article that said A-Ha was a dead band, yet that band played to 191,000 people in one night a couple of years after the article said the band was dead.
@@orlock20 yeah they have gathered a loyal fan base, but surely they're not mainstream enough anymore to be raking in that sort of cash.
They've been touring for the last two years with enormous success. In 2017 they did a The Joshua Tree 30th Anniversary world stadium tour (I actually saw them) and last year they toured again with their most recent album, which in my opinion is dogshit. They're already in the same league as Paul Mccartney, The Rolling Stones and a very few more, in a sense that it has become irrelevant if they put up a new record, they're gonna instantly sell out any venue in the world regardless.

Concerning Depeche Mode, Violator and Some Great Reward are outstanding albums. I enjoy other albums from them to a lesser degree. My favorite song from Depeche Mode is "Never Let Me Down." It's a fun song to sing along with, and its message resonates. Gahan has an alluring, distinctive singing voice. Their music is catchy as hell. Strong melody and powerful vocals really help you feel the emotion of their songs.

I think even back in the day when we were buying music on tape & CD, most artists were still making the majority of their money on tours & march. I can imagine with most music fans switching to streaming options these artists rely even more on touring. I'm happy to say I've started building a vinyl collection of my favourite artists. Loving it, it's so fun hunting around for stuff.

Coldplay’s first four albums actually have tons of great songs on them. A lot of the people who shit on them do so because they’ve only heard their hits like Yellow, The scientist, fix you, and think those songs represent their whole discography.

I've recently found your channel and really enjoy it! I was however surprised about your reaction to Depeche Mode. Check out their album "Songs of Faith and Devotion". It's epic.
Their best album
Roger Waters is touring a lot, looking at his age it's pretty incredible
Yes, you're definitely missing something not understanding why Depeche Mode is so popular. I sort of understand why you call them amalgamous. For me it's exactly that's what makes them special. Electronic, rock, ambient vibes often within a song coming together as a coherent musical message. Also they are catchy and unique at the same time which I like in music and is hard to pull off.
Holy FUCK that passion and message at the last few minutes. What a way to close out.
Hearing you say “Norte dame” killed me lmao, it’s pronounced “not-ra dam”
Not in Murica
It is pronounced that when talking about the one in France.
My grandfather was a native French speaker from Belgium and he pronounced the US college the way it was pronounced in the US.
But we're from Pennsylvania we have a city that the way the citizens pronounce it he got mad because they pronounced it Lay trobe when he pronounced it the correct way Latrobe.

We Frenglish in Canada murder the pronunciation of Notre Dame.
No it's pronounced as "Noder Daym"
The way Americans pronounce Notre Dame cracks me up... 'Noter Dayme' lol
Yeah it's kinda dumb. But the University here is techn pronounced that way.
Many people in that local area pronounce it "No-tra Daym", a hybrid of both, I suppose.
@@PumaPantalones really? I'm from IN and never heard the hybrid
love Ed Sheeran and I'm also a pop type of artist, but more in the style of his songs "Perfect" and "Thinking out loud". Notice how most of his music is centered around romance. He doesn't do heavy dark stuff, because he doesn't need to. It's talent and from the heart.
You should be on JRE. Rock on!
Love your opinion of the list and you're absolutely right. If the artist/band that's on the list still gets radio or video airplay and still touring, they shouldn't be complaining about digital streaming and artists' rights.
So the best way to be profitable now is to have thrived under the old economy.
Yep I'm older, in my 40s, I used to rush down to physical stores to buy the latest release from my favourite band. and I used to lend it to my friends if it was good enough. They'd lend me their favourites, and we'd discuss them. Music now lacks an interpersonal connection and any effort to acquire it. It has become disposable. I'll go outta my way to see a band from my youth, will todays kids go outta there way to see an artist they like now? in 5 years, 10, 20? Who's gonna show up for a Cardi B show in 2039?
No one will. That's why I don't even get that mad at Pop artists anymore, they are screwed, their music won't last
Rip Notre Dame
Hell fire
Noder Daym
What I find sad about streaming is an artist could have billion of streams on multiple songs, but a any member of Pink Floyd could earn more off DSotM vinyl sales
U2 was a great band. I'd say that Boy to Zooropa was a pretty good run for them, with the exception of maybe Rattle and Hum and October.

The song is mediocre, Offset demonstrates boringly average verses and lyrical skills. Cardi’s feature is also extremely inexcuting and average. The video, although it has some grotesque moments from Cardi, is technically pretty good. Seems like you’re being a little unnecessarily critical of it but I understand why you wouldn’t like it.

I think a "touring advance" these days is what a record advance was 20 years ago. It is given upfront to cover all costs of stage props, hotels, limos, what have you. Then you eventually have to pay your record company back if you did not make them enough money while touring.
Hey Mike , how was your Dream Theater concert?

LMFAOOOO @ Mikes reaction to Jimmy Buffett 😭😂💀
As far as Depeche Mode goes, I think a lot of people enjoy their stuff because of how it reaches a midpoint between industrial and synthpop. Some tracks are very accessible while others are more experimental. So, you have some riverheads who like them and you have the new wave movement liking them. Not to mention, some of their tracks are sort of ballady. My point is just that in terms of electronic music, Depeche Mode reaches into elements a lot of people are into.
Given your love for prog, maybe you’d like more old school industrial stuff that is more technical.
I get why someone like Bruno Mars could get that money, i'll admit he puts a fun show, but I don't get the appeal on a ginger playing the guitar with a pedal loop
Like Depeche Mode or not, Violator is one of the best produced albums of all time. It still sounds fresh nearly 30 years on
Coldplay & U2 do have some slow, melancholy, soft hits, but they have some truly great rock albums with great rock tracks. I'm glad they're 1 & 2 because it shows people still appreciate and listen to albums and not just the singles on the radio.
Come on really? In terms of the quality of the music u2 is on a completely different planet than Coldplay...
@@Naikomi95 I think the difference between Coldplay and U2 is Chris Martin and Bono. Chris can play Piano, acoustic guitar, electric, etc. Bono can hardly play guitar, especially after his bike accident. Coldplay are more diverse than U2 by far. Coldplay > U2.

...And Corbin's dead
Depeche Mode is an odd one. I was a teenager in the 80s when they were big, but only like a few of their songs. But when I saw them live in L.A. around 2000-2002, it was a fucking amazing show. They entertain, they're loud, and their audience is energized. I never listen to DM, but that concert is one of my all-time favorites.
It’s the legacy bands that still put on crazy shows. I saw Coldplay in the nosebleeds for 130, it was a great well polished show with tons of effects and lights and lasers. Also did a crazy tribute to Tom Petty when he had died the day or two before with Peter Buck from REM on guitar. Super cool. Also not surprised on U2, still riding on the waves of albums like Joshua Tree and All that you can leave behind. The latest 3 albums were terrible IMO but I love certain U2 songs.
I absolutely agree with you mike, but you have to realize that tons of artists are in the underground and want to stay there and do not have the masses to make money touring, I mean many of those don't even tour, especially in BM, because BM is already not the most popular genre, but then to have an obscure band in an obscure genre is double obscure and you have 5 people listening to your concert in the corner of the room casually drinking beer.
So the only way to really support them is to buy their records on bandcamp. But most of those bands get promotion through youtube, where big channels upload new releases. Eg. Atmospheric Black Metal Albums of Black Metal Promotion are two such channels I know of and I discover new BM mostly through these two and seldom buy the records.
Excellent commentary
