  • Here's a rare sign-on sequence from WBBM Channel 2. Includes:
Roughly 6 seconds of EIA RS-189A color bars, followed by 5 seconds of black
"Color Lightning" animated station ID (voiceover by Bob Carrington)
Sign-on with same shot of Chicago skyline as on this circa-1978 sign-off (voiceover by Jerry Harper)
National Anthem (a.k.a. "CBS SSB"), with shots of various Washington, DC landmarks (WBBM's use of this SSB on both sign-on and sign-off contrasts wildly with that of sister station WCBS Channel 2 in New York City, which only used [a badly faded print of] this same SSB during sign-off, never at sign-on)
Television Code "Seal of Good Practice" notice (1965 design variant shown) (voiceover by Jerry Harper)
Meditation with Father William Hitpas (Director of Religious Education for the Diocese of Belleville, IL) (opening and closing voiceover by Jerry Harper)
PSA for Misericordia Homes (voiceover by ??)
Ad Council PSA for National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (voiceover by ??)
This aired on local Chicago TV on Friday, May 18th 1979 during the 5:52am to 6:00am timeframe.
This was from a tape donated to The Museum of Classic Chicago Television as part of The Heather Bricker Collection.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

We have yet to see KMOX's sign-on (or sign-off) as a CBS O&O, but if this and the WCAU, KCBS and WCBS sign-ons and -offs are anything to go by, CBS was basically tossing virtually identical scripts about its stations to all its O&Os at the time.

Did a bunch of stations end the whole national anthem sign-on/sign-off tradition in the 00's?
I already know Adult Swim does it every time it ends before regular Cartoon Network programming begins again but I was pleasantly surprised to see a version of the anthem being sung by a woman on this very station this morning. I just passed by it and stopped when I heard it while flipping thru the channels. I'm in a hotel with basic cable and Idk what station it is until I listen till the end to see the station ID and it says it's CBS 2.
Apparently other news stations in the country have started this tradition again (Did a Google search). Gives me some nostalgia because I think I recall the anthem playing in some form in the 90s or early 00s.

I remember when WCBS signed off in the 1980's, it was just a voiceover saying they will return to the air at whatever time. No SSB, just a round test pattern. It was as hit-and-run as you can get.

As mentioned, WCBS-TV only played the "CBS SSB" at sign-off, not sign-on. The sign-on sequence went, after the test pattern, well at least from 1977...

The SSB is exactly the same one used on CBS O&O KMOX-TV/Saint Louis, Missouri, Channel 4.The station has gone through many owners since it was sold to Viacom in 1986.Subsequent owners have been A H Belo, and currently Meredith Broadcasting.Now,KMOV-TV 4 is owned by Gray Broadcasting as of 2022.

Given that WCBS, WBBM, WCAU and KMOX are verified as using that SSB film, can anyone from L.A. vouch for whether KNXT (now KCBS-TV) also used it at sign-off and maybe -on?

It is known that WBBM used the old-style circular 'CBS test pattern' into 1973, can anyone from the Chicago area advise around what point they abandoned that for the electronic color bars?
