Back when TV movies and specials were annual events and most people didn't own recording equipment. If you missed Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, etc. you had to wait a full year to see them again.
In the case of "Gone with the Wind", it was almost two and a half years since NBC had first telecast the film {on November 14-15, 1976}. And they needed the ratings much as CBS did in 1979- and they got it {47% of all TV viewers watched it on NBC}. However, on February 11, 1979, viewers had to choose between "Gone with the Wind", ABC's "Elvis" TV movie [featuring Kurt Russell], and NBC's presentation of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (on "THE BIG EVENT"). The results? "Elvis" attracted 39% of the audience [27.3 rating], with Scarlett & Rhett a close second [24.3/36], and "Cuckoo's Nest" third [22.5/32], which Fred Silverman (president of NBC) wasn't too happy about. And incidentally, this month {April 2024} was the latest that "Gone with the Wind" returned to theaters for another limited engagement, celebrating the 85th anniversary of its original release.
That's awesome that you lived in NY area :) Do you remember seeing the Crazy Eddie ads and other local ads? I grew up near that area also but a lot of the commercials were before my time.
@@meredith_vintage Crazy Eddie was on seemingly every commercial break. There were tons of those filmed. There were a lot of local ads, especially on the indie stations of the time (5, 9, 11). I remember Karl Ehmer very well. Also, the Spanish stations (41 & 47) had a lot of their own cheaply made ads.
