- Here's the coverage from WBBM Channel 2 of "Disco Demolition Night" as aired on Channel 2 News at Six. Featuring anchors Bill Kurtis and Harry Porterfield, a report from John Quinones, Bruce Roberts at Comiskey Park, and on the open weatherman John Coughlin, sportscaster Johnny Morris and "Perspectives" commentator Walter Jacobson. Includes:
Opening with brief shots of Kurtis, Porterfield, Coughlin, Morris, Jacobson, and a full shot of the Channel 2 newsroom (with Thomson TTV-1518 camera at frame right) (voiceover by Ed Roberts?)
Bill starts off the bat with the melee (which he pronounces as ME-LEE - the latter syllable exactly the same as the first name of longtime WBBM personality Lee Phillip) at Comiskey Park the previous night. He also previews the following stories:
- A report from John Drummond on a confrontation at the El Rukns temple involving members of what had been the Black P. Stone Nation Gang
- Brief preview of report of DC-10's being cleared for running by the FAA before this part of recording cuts out
Back to the coverage, Bill describes the events - a promotional event, "Disco Demolition Night," held in-between the first and second game of a doubleheader that went out of control, spearheaded by anti-disco disc jockey Steve Dahl of WLUP-FM - before introducing John Quinones' report, which features clips of the mayhem as it was unfolding, plus interviews with Mr. Dahl (on the 37th floor of the Hancock Building), area resident Jim Sutera, and Deputy Chief of Special Operations Charles Pepp; John notes that it is unclear at this point whether the planned second game would be forfeited, owing to the damage to the field as a result of the event, and that Bruce Roberts would be reporting from the stadium later in the broadcast, before this part of the recording cuts out
Harry then introduces Bruce Roberts' report from Comiskey, which features taped interviews with owner Bill Veeck (who reads a telegram from American League President Lee MacPhail on the umpires' decision to forfeit the second game to the visiting Detroit Tigers) and Sox groundskeeper Roger Bossard (who explains the nightmare of repairing the field after the event), as well as an on-the-scene interview with shortstop Alan Bannister; towards the end of this recording, Bruce mentioned that the Sox had lost the first game 4-1 to Detroit, and the Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds 10-8, and he is midway in describing that game when the recording finally cuts out.
This aired on local Chicago TV on Friday, July 13th 1979 during the 6pm to 7pm timeframe.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,000+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

Wish we could do this to rap music 💿💣🔥💥
R Kelly too
Eh no! Rap A.K.A. Hip-Hop music is not gonna be destroyed.
What a Disco Demolition night that was! Chicago's reputation will never be the same.
This year marks the 40th Anniversary of that "historic" moment.
@@luisreyes1963 Welllll, this year makes 45 years since the big day.....
WBBM anchor Bill Kurt is and reporter John Quionones would both eventually work in network TV at CBS and ABC respectively.
What makes this video great, you saw real men speaking real thoughts not a script. Man I wish the old days would come again....
The most infamous promotion in sports history.
That was a wild night. Behold the power of disco! :p
Can we have a Justin Bieber Demolition Night?
Sy Stewart Ask someone to do a night for that at a radio station. And for Black and all the other horrid "artists" that make up whatever category of "music" they're from.
Only if someone holds a Nickelback Demolition Night. 🤣
How about no, and over my dead body. Just because you don't like these singers and groups doesn't give you the right to blow up those albums and create problems.
You see the ladies who go to his concerts? Your momma, your sister, your grandma and your wife.
2:51 so much crunchy snake goodness one forgets they are on camera
The irony of this whole thing is, the city where disco supposedly "died", HOUSE MUSIC became (and still is) KING!!! Steve Dahl didn't "kill" anything.
ALL THAT MAYHEM and only a few minor injuries !
John Quinones from What Would You Do?.
John Quinones....... what would you do?

37th anniversary of Disco Demolition Night!
The player talked about the idea of canceling the between game activities. If it were announced that they were canceling the between game activities, there’d be an even worse riot.
i guess it goes way back that "Nobody takes responsibility for their own actions" everyone says it is somebodies fault!
The umpires were wrong.
-Bill Veeck 😂
The saddest day for great music. Long live Disco will always love it till the day I die.
The night Disco died and the House Music movement started on the southside of Chicago. 😂🤣😂🤣Lol thanks Steve for inspiring us black kids to be creative.
We Need K-Pop Demolition Night
Steve Dahl was a lunatic, he was fired from his job because his radio station gave up on rock and started playing disco and this was his way of getting back at the world.
+INDLIS He wasted his time on this stupid event
DewElr1 Mike Veeck was fired and was barred from all MLB events for life
I was like wow Harry potter then heard porterfield and became sad lol kidding great up
Bill Veeck was a PR Guru, but an awful Baseball and Security Talent
Over the Edge part one.

We should have a "Rap Demolition Night"!!! For the past 28 years, rap has been taking my peers away from Rock N Roll! Also, I personally think that rap is extremely annoying to hear, and it really get on my nerves! If that''s not enough, the majority of the rap recorded over the past 28 years has contained lots of profanity, including heavy use of the F-word. Much of it also contains racial slurs, including the N-word. A great deal of it also contains graphic sexual connotations, and preaches hate, violence, joining gangs, and street level drug dealing. That's why I believe it has a bad influence on our society, and I think it's a contributing factor in all of this gun violence we've had in recent years. In sports venues, they blast that stuff on the PA during warmup, every time there's stoppage of play, and at halftime. Families bring their small children to sports events, and they have too be subjected to that stuff. Also, every time I hear someone booming their vehicle subwoofers, it infuriorates me!!!! That's because nine times out of ten, it's rap music. Seriously, I'd like to see rap music anniltated!!!
Channel Two, on your side!😃
2:37 HALL or HOME or YARD? don't make sense
Those who didn't want to sit through the second ballgame of the doubleheader could have left after the demolition and gone home.
It was not about them not wanting to sit through the game. The game was an afterthought. They were having too much fun trashing the field. It wasn't a protest against the game. It was them being jerks because they could.
Agreed, it was teens and twenty somethings being their age groups in that stage in their life. So, before I make any criticism, I was their age once doing what was typical.
Disco sucked then, and still sucks.
Disco rules you're wrong, Hip Hop and Country Music sucks
John Hagan All three stinks. Classic rock will always rule!!
+Steven Macias Classic rock = Jurassic rock.
F Classic Rock, Classic Hip-Hop is now ruling the airwaves ya sissy!
Vaughn Baskin opinions vary.
Alan Bannister... talk about a name from the past.
Dahl's only claim to fame and spent decades talking about it to remain relavant.
As a result, the "Disco" sound was replaced..... Dahl did what he intended to do...... Hes relevant...
Cut off jeans galore.
Can We Have Tragically Hip Demolition Night
