***** I think everybody's a little embarrassed by their earlier works (I know I am) and prouder of their later ones because by then they've got a firmer grasp of the concepts and know-how. Just a thought.
+Grabehn42 Yahtzee gave commentary on a text LP of the Chzo games, and went on to say that he vies the games as flawed and imperfect, but wouldn't have gotten the insight to be where he is if he never made them. At the same time he says he wishes he'd made them later in his career so they'd be better in his eyes. Catch 22.
Wow! I'd played these as they were released 20 years ago and still think of them fondly. I don't have the time to replay them all and solve the puzzles so this is a great substitute. Cozy games!
Yahtzee is really hard on himself, but when I played this game as a teenager I was genuinely drawn into it. It holds up surprisingly well, and for whatever criticisms you can level about careless or anachronistic world-building it succeeds in developing a very powerful atmosphere.

5 days is my favourite in the series even though I think that 7 days had the best horror concept. I think it has so much to do with how strong the opening is. Cat burglar enters an empty home not only to find it it not empty but that the dude is god damn terrified, unreasonably so. And then the music hits. So Good.
The think I love about the painting in the dining room is the first change is subtle enough that you aren't actually sure whether it changed or you're just misremembering it. I wasn't sure until the third day.
I'm genuinely very intrigued with this. I can't believe how much of a step up this was over the Rob Blanc trilogy and The Trials of Odysseus Kent. I'm a sucker for a good mystery/spooky plot and the differing character voices definitely help. Dying to see the next half! Might have to give the Chzo Mythos a play, seems cool.
I needed a walkthrough for some of the timing puzzles, becausr I'm an idiot and I have no patience when it gets scary and I need to thin quickly. I played the 5 and 7 days games, too bad I can't bring myself to play thr first one because it's text input only, but those games are a great horror experience. The ending in 7days...oh my!
Yahtzee's ragging on how text-heavy the games are, but frankly, I think it's fine -- you don't play adventure games for twitch shooting segments, and he's a thoroughly competent writer. Plus, 6 and 7 Days still scare the absolute shit out of me.
Dirk Bogan There does seem to be a misplaced stigma against games with lots of text. Seems like the common consensus among critics is that text=inherently bad and vague visual cues=inherently good. I really dislike this sentiment, I think a lot can be done with text that can't be done with visuals.
You can find the commentary and the interview on youtube. If you click "Interview" you are actually treated to a bizarre little skit between the female character and Yahtzee or rather, Yahtzee's soul channeled through a dog. Dog Yahtzee then proceeds to say he was inspired to make this game when he was watching hentai and eventually turns his female interviewer into a female dog in heat. Seriously, look it up.
They do have their issues, like the text parser in Notes, but the Chzo Mythos series are probably my favourite adventure games ever, mostly for a bang-up job of making a gripping setting and satisfactory plot, and partially because it speaks to what can be achieved with a well focused one-man team. Not an artistic or programming savant, but someone well enough trained in all aspects to make the whole package come together really well. Something sufficiently within reach of someone like myself to make me think, "I could actually do something like that if I committed to it." It's surprisingly inspirational like that.
Watching this video for the eightieth time, I thought... I've never actually played a point-and-click adventure game before. Or any "adventure game", I think. So, I just went and downloaded the Special Editions Pack (it's easy to find, Google 5DAS download, you'll get to Ramblomatic, then there's a link and a link and a link). 5 Days, 7 Days, Notes, 6 Days and 1213 special editions, all together. Should be in for a good weekend.

Yahtzee, I know you're rather harsh on yourself (And honestly, that's refreshing from a game developer) but this series is one of my favorite point-and-click series I've ever played. I'm a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft and Hellraiser and I think this is a great mash-up of the two.
Wow, I totally recognised that horror music from RPG maker 2003, maybe it was in older versions too but anyway it brought back memories - spending hours building a huge world...and then never finishing it. Still, fun times.
Ah yes.I spent the majority of 2003-2004 crouched on the floor in my old room at my parents house amidst stacks of my packed up belongings with my computer sitting on milk crates. No job, no car, no computer desk or chair just literally squatting at my parents house eating morning glory seeds and building a massive game world with lore and little else. No dungeons, just towns full of people telling meandering stories about things that had once happened there. What a glorious waste of my youth.
This is the first game made by Yahtzee that I have played. It was shortly after it was released and at the time I had no idea who Yahtzee was. It's a great adventure game and one of the very few that managed to make me scared.

I stumbled upon this game a couple of years ago but I didn't play it much. Now I'm enjoying it with all the commentary from the author himself. Nicely done, Yahtzee!
I remember back in 2008 when I played this game and I remember thinking: I bet Terry Pratchett is the designer's favorite author. I feel so smart for being able to call that one! :D :D :D :D :D
Honestly I remember playing this and the games that followed years ago to me they were some of my favorites ... never knew they were made by Yahtzee . Thank you Yahtzee for entertaining me for many hours of my youth.
Okay please tell me you're going to use look on the door like 5 times. Trilby's 4th wall breaking comments how he keeps staring at the door is one of my favorite moments in the game
Roy Orbit There are free sound libraries online, like freesound.org maybe even Valve taken it from one. Also if you are into this thing, look at cgtextures.com. A lot of game's textures are taken from there.
I'd love to see this remade with more the design style we see in "Art of Theft" as the design is REALLY engaging there and I loved Trilby absolutely immediately in that. I also wish Simone didn't die in later games :/
Yahtzee, would you ever consider expanding on the Trilby games in the form of a new game or book? Gabe, would you have played these games if you weren't friends with Yahtzee and you came across them?
SoreWristed In one of the videos Gabe said that he came across this game (and other Yahztee games) on Freeware sites and tried to play one (actually this one funnily enough) but couldn't get it to work. So the answer is "Yes I would have, but never did."
Played this a while ago and absolutely loved it. Same with the rest of the series. I had a lot of fun really. I would love to see more adventure games from you. WITH YOU AND GABE DOING THE VOICES!
We have to admit that was pretty cool , the whole skeleton in the bath thing was quite effective, not scary because of the graphics but if it was in a game now it would probably make a few people jump
Since Yahtzee is nit-picking so much I can hopefully be forgiven for doing the same. There is no such thing as a late 18th century musket rifle that can be described as standard issue for the British army. The first one might call standard issue, the Baker rifle, was 1801 issue at the earliest and relatively rare even amongst the Light Infantry units. AFAIK the only rifle the British fielded in quantity in the late 18th century would be the Ferguson rifle (1776) but that stretches standard issue beyond breaking point. Presumably Yahtzee had a brain fart and used 18th century to talk about 1800s? An easily made mistake.
There are hereditary knighthoods. They're called baronetcies, and baronets are not technically peers, but they are titled, and tend to be rich. Sir Ranulph Fiennes, 3rd Bt., is an example(famous explorer and relative of Ralph Fiennes, the actor).
I know what Chekhov's Gun is, but when Gabe says it I imagine him hip-firing an autocannon with "CHEKHOV" printed on the side in cyrillic characters while a metal version of the Soviet National Anthem blasts in the background
10:14 i paused here to grab a slice of pizza, then came back, and for a split second i felt a primal rage, because it shouldn't take this long for a computer in this day and age to load something. Just because there was an hourglass there.
I just noticed, Yahtzee and Gabe are kind of like Ornstein and Smough- a slender but tall and more well - known guy working with a huge guy that is apparently fat but upon closer inspection (I.e under Smough's armour) they're actually muscular as hell. Plus Smough was the bigger dickhead according to Dark Souls lore and Yahtzee's said that he has Gabe so that there's someone to say even more horrible things than himself.
With the Sir thing, he could have been a war hero at a young age, knighted for his actions but possibily discharged later with PTSD. That would explain why the police instantly went to murder and suicide, maybe stating that his PTSD caused him to murder his wife and then kill himself.
Yes! I love the Chzo Mythos. I'm not just saying that as fan of Yahtzee's Work, I'm saying it as a serious fan of Lovecraftian fiction. I know Yahtzee's a busy man but I would seriously love it if someday he continued working on the Chzo Mythos or at least allowed a fanbase to expand the Universe on his behalf. There's some serious potential in it.
I remember playing the Chzo Mythos games in 2007, just before 6 Days came out. This first game I remembered being pretty bad, but the other ones were legitimately scary. I look forward for the Ego Review of those. The graphics are much better than I recall, and I have vivid memories of that kitchen and backyard. I got stuck at the part where you had to break through the wall in the kitchen and go down stairs or whatever. Fun times.
I tried making a game, ONCE. Whispers always came out as blurry, non-comprehensible, this sounds like they are whispering kill them, do it, for her, something like that. Fuck me, when I first heard that I freaked instantly, I totally didn't expect it.

I can't believe it. I remember playing this game and the others in the series years ago. I later became a fan of Zero Punctuation and never realised they were created by the same person! I've been a fan of Yahtzee for years longer than I realised
Trilby's head really is the worst sprite ever. When the welder takes his mask off and reveals Trilby's head, it really looks like a woman with an apron and some scissors coming to get you.
Heh. I always wondered why the school was St Trinians. I always presumed it was just an amusing reference to confuse people. I never thought he'd just subconsciously picked it up somewhere and didn't know where it was from.

By midday of being trapped in a mysterious house, I would have gone around and snatched the cushions from all the furniture to construct a pillow fort. Then I'd go about throwing the plates over the outside walls, just to see if I could.
for the record Paralympian Ellie Simmonds was knighted at the age of 14. The youngest ever to receive a Knighthood. So its nota plot hole just a plot contrivance.
Tad the Rad I think it's the same; I really love space settings and I remember the character designs, but I'd need to play again to remember their personalities. Might play through 'em all again for the hell of it.
The characters don't have too much personality to be honest. It's more like...one exagerated personality which I think Yahtzee said in the commentary. I'd have to redownload the special editions again I forgot where I got them the first time. I couldn't get past the last half of 7 Days because I'm a huge wussy.. ;;
It's a shame the interview extra wasn't included in these videos. It's hilarious when Simone interviews Yahtzee, in the form of a dog, and is horrified to discover that one of the inspirations for 5 Days a Stranger was the hentai game Nocturnal Illusion.
Reading through some other comments, I'm very pleased to see others are also using this as a sleep aid all these years later.

Finally Inspector Gadget gets his own video game
I stumbled upon this game a couple of years ago but I didn't play it much. Now I'm enjoying it with all the commentary from the author himself. Nicely done, Yahtzee!
I absolutely LOVE this series, lovelovelove. We need more storylines like this, in games.
My senses are having a nostalgia overload right now
I miss these
Gorsky55 I feel ya bro
me three
=(
I remember back in 2008 when I played this game and I remember thinking: I bet Terry Pratchett is the designer's favorite author.
I feel so smart for being able to call that one! :D :D :D :D :D
Omg finally!! :D I've been asking for this forever! Now do a zero punctuation version!
We really need a remaster version on steam, i would buy it the same day it comes out
Honestly I remember playing this and the games that followed years ago to me they were some of my favorites ... never knew they were made by Yahtzee .
Thank you Yahtzee for entertaining me for many hours of my youth.
Okay please tell me you're going to use look on the door like 5 times. Trilby's 4th wall breaking comments how he keeps staring at the door is one of my favorite moments in the game
I've been waiting for this one. Thanks for getting around to it.
Yahtzee, seeing your old games brings a tear of nostalgia to this old eye. :D
Walking sound taken from Half-life. Noticed it straight away
Roy Orbit Profile picture stolen from Yahtzee's art assets. Noticed it straight away.
A Travler from a different land Jeez, i'm not having a go. I just noticed it. Stop being so defensive.
Roy Orbit If anything he/she was being aggressive and you are being defensive.
A Travler from a different land Wait what?
Roy Orbit There are free sound libraries online, like freesound.org maybe even Valve taken it from one. Also if you are into this thing, look at cgtextures.com. A lot of game's textures are taken from there.
Хорошая игра. Талантливый писатель этот Крошоу. Побольше бы таких.
SoreWristed Man, now I want a Chzo-Mythos horror novel starring a snarky cat burglar. Damn
DrTheKay Do you happen to know where I might find these?
Dude, major props for the goon show reference, love that show!
Well trilby said it and he did preface it with "I'm no gun expert".
He's probably talking about the brown bess musket.
He probably isn't making a distinction between rifled and unrifled muskets. Which means he probably is referring to Brown Bess.
Shit, do we have to wait a week for the next one?! Im on the edge of my seat here! I don't wanna wait a whole week...
Odysseus Ulysses You can download the game
I just noticed, Yahtzee and Gabe are kind of like Ornstein and Smough- a slender but tall and more well - known guy working with a huge guy that is apparently fat but upon closer inspection (I.e under Smough's armour) they're actually muscular as hell.
Plus Smough was the bigger dickhead according to Dark Souls lore and Yahtzee's said that he has Gabe so that there's someone to say even more horrible things than himself.
Shmock is actually fat, there's just muscle under the fat.
Even more like Gabe considering how much he apparently eats.
Thank GOD for Jim!
'Who spilled all this plot thickener everywhere?' definitely using that
I miss my favorite homosexuals on the internet...
I remember playing this about 6 years ago. Can't wait for the entire series to be played
Hey... Big Brother the TV show might not have existed in the 90's but maybe Trilby was just a really big fan of 1984 :P
With the Sir thing, he could have been a war hero at a young age, knighted for his actions but possibily discharged later with PTSD.
That would explain why the police instantly went to murder and suicide, maybe stating that his PTSD caused him to murder his wife and then kill himself.
nope. turns out that there is a title that allows someone to inherit the title "Sir". Baronetcy or something like that.
Still put this on sometimes when i can't sleep.
me too
Good Lord, it's all half-life sounds!
lol, those Half-Life 1 footsteps.
This series always gave me the creeps ....
Damn this is pretty good. Cant wait for next week
Fun times.
BillyMaysRIP The improved graphics could have been part of the special edition he was rambling on about
@@BrickBreakerXX they aren't
I want a special edition of this video with Yahtzee commenting on his in-game commentary. :(
With the Big Brother anachronism, couldn't it just be a 1984 reference?
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, 46:06 I CAN HEAR WHISPERS, LEGIT WHISPERS. YAHTZEE HOW THE SHIT DID YOU DO THAT.
Those are in game ambiance. I have played this game, and it creeped me out to no end the forst tome i heard it.
I tried making a game, ONCE. Whispers always came out as blurry, non-comprehensible, this sounds like they are whispering kill them, do it, for her, something like that. Fuck me, when I first heard that I freaked instantly, I totally didn't expect it.
They scared the shit out of me, I wasn't sure if it was coming from the video or somewhere in my room, haha!
amyhunter83 Wait 'til Trilby's Notes and 6 Days. You'll soon develop quite a powerful aversion to whisperings.
Son of a widle's bitch. ; A ;
What is Yahtzees thing with journalists that won't stop being journalists in ridicules scenarios? Simone is just like Angela in jam.
callum west That's what journalists in fiction do. They have no sense of self-preservation and will do ANYTHING to get their story.
OptimusSledge As a journalism student I'm not sure how to take that :( perhaps I'll get my camcorder and document this feeling in case future generations forget what emotions are and then I WILL BECOME THE ONLY RELIABLE SOURCE FOR LEARNING WHAT EMOTION USED TO BE!!!!!!!!!
I'M SO BLOODY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OptimusSledge That occasionally happens in real life but only to the extent of being the daring reporter to visit a war torn country. Not so much everything else.
Oda Swifteye Day 45 of being held prisoner by the terrorist insurgency ... "The quality of food and accommodation has really started to deteriorate now. If you held a gun to my head (which has become more or less standard practice amongst the insurgents) and forced me to give an honest review on trip advisor I'd probably give it around... one and a half stars. I've been Steve and that's all from me folks see you tomorrow for a shocking update on the conditions of my toilet corner!!!
callum west Most likely because Reporter/Journalist is a horror trope
if this is a horror game are things going to go "abloogy woogy woo"?
I always imagined this being set in the 80s, actually.
I just noticed this but I love how Yahtzee used Half-Life's footfall sounds.
The game that put Yahtzee on the map for me
I can't believe it.
I just finished playing Poacher.
I wonder when they'll do that? It's really good... Just make sure to re-bind the fire and jump keys.
Heh. I always wondered why the school was St Trinians. I always presumed it was just an amusing reference to confuse people. I never thought he'd just subconsciously picked it up somewhere and didn't know where it was from.
I like that these are basically the same characters as those in Jam yahtzee's second book.
I played these back in the day (meaning I stumbled across them back when they were quite new) and they genuinely got under my skin. So unsettling...... I hope I can find a way to port the series to my android devices.
So when are we getting each of the 1 thru 4 Days games?
Consuming Shadow?
By midday of being trapped in a mysterious house, I would have gone around and snatched the cushions from all the furniture to construct a pillow fort. Then I'd go about throwing the plates over the outside walls, just to see if I could.
for the record Paralympian Ellie Simmonds was knighted at the age of 14. The youngest ever to receive a Knighthood.
So its nota plot hole just a plot contrivance.
I enjoyed this game (well all of the Chzo Mythos, really), but I found 7 Days a Skeptic to be my favorite of the series.
7 Days a Skeptic is my favorite too. I think I'm a sucker for anything relating to space and I like the characters.
Tad the Rad I think it's the same; I really love space settings and I remember the character designs, but I'd need to play again to remember their personalities.
Might play through 'em all again for the hell of it.
The characters don't have too much personality to be honest. It's more like...one exagerated personality which I think Yahtzee said in the commentary. I'd have to redownload the special editions again I forgot where I got them the first time.
I couldn't get past the last half of 7 Days because I'm a huge wussy.. ;;
I JUST WANTED TO GO INTO SPACE
360ZAllDAY13 He is probably best friends with Space Core from Portal 2.
It's a shame the interview extra wasn't included in these videos. It's hilarious when Simone interviews Yahtzee, in the form of a dog, and is horrified to discover that one of the inspirations for 5 Days a Stranger was the hentai game Nocturnal Illusion.
I'm watching this 24 minutes after Hallowe'en.
I recommend playing the series first to experience the story unfold first hand.I enjoyed it alot
