It's a valid argument. And you're misrepresenting it. The wokeness complaints are made ALONG WITH other criticisms of the game like Starfield has woke problems but the open world aspect is broken by invisible barriers and you can't actually fly to the planets etc. But you know that. You just want to misrepresent the argument to score points with your side.
Just to define wokeness - by left, it is understood as "being awakened to the prejudices and injustices in society and acting to counter those prejudices through the means of emotional thinking and refering to one's lived experience" by the right it is understood as "fake-wisdom, false- enlightement, addressing existing problems in society through naive and childish means that do not work in larger scope of things but make a person feel good about themselves". Examples include following slogans blindly, such as "Defund the police" (really? all police, everywhere? No attempt to reform the police first?), "believe all women" (ALL women? Aren't some women bad people as well? Really?), believing in hundreds of genders that are essentially new names for different personality types, but we treat it as some super-enlightened invention, etc. I think what also bothers people about wokeness is the condescending "know it all" attitude, instead of convincing someone, just pushing your worldview onto others and when they disagree (e.g. because they are a Muslim, or Buddhist or a Christian Catholic) shaming them for it. I specifically was disappointed with BG3. I had this game in early access, and for the most of its development there were no pronouns, and body types, just standard sex distinction... because the developers knew that most of their early-buyers and testers were center, and center-right in their political opinions. The moment they released the game, they changed it all - classice bait and switch, really.
You could also say that all the pawns are women too, moving them to the frontlines, take who you could take, move quickly from their space and then become queens themselves.
Though I generally disagree with most of the points. But absolutely agree we should watch and play what we enjoy. If its too woke, put it down, refund it, sell it off, franchises come and go. The free market is absolute.

As a gamer its not so much progressive ideas, but how its presented. They tend to take nuanced diverse ideas and force feed it without any thought behind it. Its almost like they tell people you are bad if you disagree with us. I for one dont care about the gender or color of a MC if they are well writted stories, or fun gameplay. All this talk of representation, who actually cares man? We just want fun games with good writting and jokes and atuff that are actually funny. And also fuck microtransactions and content locked behind paywalls

My very first video game all the way back in 1997 was Oddworld Abe's Oddyse, and it was VERY woke by today's standards. You have this sweet factory owned by a race of industrialists that had the indigenous tribe enslaved and made to work at the factory, and due to overhunting the local wildlife(to turn to sweets) and rendering them endangered, their profits plunder. They decide to kill their workers instead and turn to sweets, and as the protagonist(Abe), you must save the other workers, and destroy the factory. If you fail to save a set number of workers, you get the bad ending.
Damn that actually sounds really cool, I might check that out. But yeah there are plenty of games from the past that would be deemed work nowadays that it just becomes a meaningless word to use
Yeah, that game was amazing. It came out when I was in college and we had discussions in class about it. It was pretty bold for the time...and yes, it's not easy, especially if you want the "good" ending. 😂

I would say half finished games, loot boxes, pay to win, and paid DLCs are hurting gaming far more then politics. I mean really 70 dollars for Starfeild that came out half finished. Bethesda: Don't worry we will fix it later. I remember I wqs looking forward to WWE2K20 back in 2019. When it came out the game well it wqs unplayable. It was so bad 2k had to put out a statment and then take a year an a half beofre they put out a new game. I wish EA would do that with Madden. I wish major studio's would just finish the damn gsme like Square did with FF16. How BG3 is a finished game. I mean its not asking much to just give gamers a finished product for the price they are asking for.

They already suspend their disbelief of physics and biology, it's no different than suspending their beliefs in ideological frameworks. They base their personality to their refusal to enjoy anything that doesn't cater to their understanding of reality. And nerd stuff? Fun fact: We have historical texts that calls the version of chess we know as "madwoman's" chess, back in the medival era. People complaing about wokeness has literally existed since the 11th century.
The idea that messages get in the way of stories always seemed silly to me. All stories have messages. All stories have politics whether they be undertones or explicit. Messages are essential for stories and I think that it's good to give a platform to marginalized voices. What people consider woke is too often just the reality of the world. There are women, minorities, and queer people in the real world so I don't know why them existing in stories makes it automatically woke. And I don't know why it's bad to tell stories about the experiences and community of marginalized people. I think people have gotten more sensitive to theses issues in recent years too. The same is true with tv shows. For example, Game of Thrones and Avatar the Last Airbender both are shows that deal with patriarchal gender norms and how they hurt men and women. But when their sequel series, House of the Dragon and Legend of Korra came out, both were criticized for being woke despite not changing their politics.

I've seen a ton of people call Korra a mary sue despite her basically losing over half her fights. But it wasn't quite as bad as with House of the Dragon. That's really around the time when people started freaking out whenever the slightest bit of social commentary about gender is present. House of the Dragon depicted the harm traditional patriarchal values does to women just as Game of Thrones did. But it got a ton of hate for that until Rings of Power came along. Rings of Power wasn't great but the idea that its somehow the fault of wokeness that it was disappointing is laughable. I don't know any minority group that is overrepresented in tv or video games. Generally speaking, both genres are still white men dominated or at least white people dominated. The MCU is still majority white male led even in phase 4 which has been labeled as woke by online people. As far as your victims comment goes, there is bigotry and exploitation in the real world. I don't see why it can't be in media.

I was recently playing the Fable series, and they gave you the option to marry a gay or bisexual partner and ever since the third game to adopt children with gay couples. Hell the second game had a mission where you helped a guy find a blind date that was a man! You also get evil points for giving him a girl instead of a guy. That game came out in 2008 by the way. That’s one example of a game being progressive, and I was surprised the first game had gay couples as an option in 2004. So yeah, “woke” gaming has been a thing for way longer than these nut jobs think. Also Samus from Metroid: her gender was a secret and no one thought her reveal was “woke propaganda”. At least not what I know.
Because a woman isn't allowed to be beautiful AND capable AND independent. She has to pick one, 1.5 AT MOST. If she wants to be pretty, she has to dress like a sex doll, if she wanted to dress like anyone would who is going into a death match, then she has to be a tomboy with no convenientally attractive features. From a young age we tell little girls their value is in their beauty. Little boys see this, and they take comfort in the fact that they are mommy brave, strong, smartly little man. I may not be pretty like my sister, but I'm capable, they think. Girl need me to protect and care for them, they believe. Some of those little boys never grow out of this stage. They end up being man children who are confused and enraged by the fact that adult women are allowed to be both sexually attractive and competent, capable professionals. Those guys are low hanging fruit for right wing grifts who prey of their insecurely. If you have sons, the single most important thing you can do to make sure he is confident and well adjusted and strong is to make sure he understands that girls are his equal in every way. A whole lot of adult men are full of insecurities that stem from not believing this.

Nowadays, the word woke, which was once a word about being aware of systemic injustices has become a buzzword to attack entertainment because whenever there is one bit of diversity and inclusion in a movie, TV show, comic book, and video game, these Anti-SJWs say that it's woke because they feel it's against whites, heterosexuals and men. One more thing when it comes to saying that video games are "too woke", here's my response to those people. In Final Fantasy VII, the villain besides Sephiroth is capitalism. Final Fantasy VII has a message about preserving the environment and fighting against these billion-dollar corporation that are messing up the environment. The Shinra built Mako Reactors to extract the planet's life blood, the Lifestream, to use as an energy source and it's killing the planet. Metal Gear Solid, nuclear weapons and war are both bad. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, racism is bad. B.J. Blazkowicz in Wolfenstein series fought the Nazis and he would totally fight against the alt-right. Mass Effect, much like Star Trek, promoted equality for every race, gender, and sexual orientation. Final Fantasy Tactics has a character called Argath Thadalfus who proves to be an asshole. He's a classist and believes that commoners are nothing but animals. Not only the game focuses on classism, but it also shows another villain besides the Lucavi and Ultima, religion. The Church of Glabados would silence people who dare to expose dark truths about it by any means necessary. History has proven that religion had controlled the masses and committed all sorts of vicious crimes and atrocities to protect themselves.

You can make a good game that happens to be woke, and you can make a woke game that happens to be good, but the risk of screwing up a video game is much higher when you have your political messaging foremost in the creation process. On the other hand, it’s sometimes fun to subvert the “woke” intentions of a game, like setting your pronouns to “don’t ask/don’t tell” or naming your char “transister desister.”
1 million percent agree. I had issues with the Last of Us 2, but it had nothing to do with LGBTQIA+ representation. I mean, duh, I like my group being represented more. I had problems with the mediocre gameplay and the story that wasn't coherent. But, I loved the Spiderman Animated movies, and I love the Dead Space remake. The real reason bigots use the word "Woke" is, they don't have the guts anymore to say how they truly feel. A meme summed it up the best. A bigoted white man sitting in the theater saying, "Damn modern movies, there's too many women and blacks in them." The audience gives him a nasty look. Same person and crowd, but he says, "Dang these newer movies are too woke for me." The audience sits, smiles, and ignores him. See, a lot of people don't connect the dots that it's diversity and representation that he's complaining about. That's why bigots use the word "Woke" so much. The bigots don't have the guts to say what's on their minds.

As for years prior, the level of representation wasn’t as mainstream as it is now, and since we have media in all forms that’s putting marginalized peoples front and center these outrage channels have also put themselves front and center
i think it is a balance act anyway. while having transgenders be present in a game like cyberpunk makes sense, it feels a bit out of place in high fantasy like bg3. like chicks with beards and stuff. I mean there is magic, but still feels a bit weird. then there is stuff that just logically doesn't make sense, like having mixed male / female teams in fifa, with the girls having as good stats as the boys. again this kinda feels a bit like corporations trying to shoehorn stuff in to virtue signal, and in that sense I can agree that it can be immersion breaking.
I mean dnd has a long history of LGBT themes, not only as 'players change gender' mechanics but also different races having different gender views including non-binary genders. Obviously inspired by real life mythology which has tons of queer characters and themes.

The word "woke" is such a mess, it makes it almost impossible to have a genuine conversation. I remember a time in the mid 2010s when half of the people using the term were outspokenly left-wing or apolitical players/movie-goers, but now all I see people associating it to is far right nuts or civil rights activist. There is no nuance anymore and now you can dismiss criticisms as far right hate or far left propaganda. I don't think most people complaining about destroying the suspension of disbelief care that the characters are a particular sex, sexual orientation, or skin color. Was Mass Effect woke for allowing you to play as a woman, or as a gay MC? It didn't break immersion, because the insertion was appropriate. Many of the "woke" examples don't make sense and betray the lack of care or skill the writers of the game (or the executives) have and the result is yet again a poor product, so it's no wonder that the public would end up rallying behind a catch-all term for this. A lot of people don't see "woke" as "progressive ideas" but rather as "decisions based on greed or lack of skill painting themselves as progressive for virtue signalling and shielding from criticism". I also associate it a lot with hypocrisy, like how big brands try to stay relevant by showing rainbows during pride month (except for oppressive regions) then forget about all of that in the next month. Of course, of the examples I saw mentioned in this video, several of them were also from ridiculous commenters (who cares that Thor has a beer belly, or that Ellie can live her already established sexuality in the next game), so it is true that a lot of people are unnecessarily outraged, and this muddies the waters even more.
Yeah that’s definitely a definition I’ve seen a couple times but not enough tbh, often times the use of the word lacks nuance. If people were more willing to have discussions like these rather than screaming about stuff then we’d be in a much better place

You know, sometimes I'd love to do a story where all the characters are either women, black, LGBT, poor, disabled, several of the above, or all of the above, just to piss off the anti-woke crowd. Of course, I'd make it so it's still a good story with good writing and good characters. Because in the end, it's not the intention of the maker that counts, it's how the made itself is, how the intentions are reflected in it. In that case, whether diversity was given significantly more attention than the quality of the story. And then if that story sells well, let those anti-SJWs see how they're going to defend their 'go woke, go broke' narrative against it. This thought experiment just had to come out.
It’s always very tempting to want to annoy people like this, but like you said that’s the wrong reason to make art. I think you should do that story if you have something to say, if it’s a story you feel is worth telling, and if you want to make it diverse then all the power in the world to you. Then again, sometimes art is done to evoke reactions even negative ones so it’s not a crazy idea haha. But usually I’d say to remember to do it for you

One of the reasons I started learning how to make video games is for a similar sentiment. Someone said that a black person can't be a samurai, and they definitely can't be gay, so I want to make a game where you play a black samurai where your lover is a white man (there's a reason for this). But the more I look into it the more I realize I can make it a beautiful love story and heroine journey, and I think that can be really beautiful. Hopefully my skills will progress enough to do it justice.

While I do agree that saying something is woke is not a good argument, you have to look at actions and events that make people give it validity. You mentioned Hogwarts Legacy, people attempted to boycott that game because they thought it was endorsing anti lgbtq, even though JK Rowling had nothing to do with the making of the game. Which also extended to people trying to stream it, look what happened to Hasan Piker. For Anita Sarkeesian, she fired the first shots and then didn’t want to deal with the backlash by disabling comments. No one should get death threats or bullied but she entered the ring and didn’t want to have to hold her ground. More importantly, imo, she really reached with a lot of her critiques. She points out Zelda having to be rescued in Ocarina of Time but glosses over the fact that Zelda guides Link through out his adventure and uses her magic to hold down Ganon so Link could deal the final blow. It was also never enough for her. Sarkeesian would complain about there not being a female Link. We then got Linkle in Hyrule Warriors, who I think is an awesome character and would like to see more of, she then complains that Nintendo needs to do a trans version of Link. As far as sexualizing in video games, this can go to far, just look at Nexus Mods, having said that, I think the opposite extreme is bad too. Best example I can think of is Mass Effect Andromeda. They didn’t want to make the female characters look sexy so instead the all looked either blank or bizarre, especially the female version of the main character. Later on they actually had to remodel the faces to course correct. To add on to that, men get sexualized too, not just women. You use MK as an example, look at Lui Kang, Look at Johny Cage, heck, look at every Final Fantasy protagonist. So what does the balance look like to you? Lastly is the representation point. You are right representation is good, but it can and has gotten preachy and in your face. Sometimes even condescending about it. Some examples that come to mind from other media are Velma, High Guardian Spice, and Santa Inc. Some cases putting out misinformation like Cleopatra. Ultimately, both sides are to blame here, you are right, there are anti woke people who get offended like crazy but I have seen just as much on the other side. Neither side wants to hold their own accountable and I think the discourse will only get worse.

Of course there's always going to be exterme point of views on both sides, but in my opinion the "woke" movement has made every form of media worse. Like you said it's not a bad thing they're adding more diversity and inclusion into movies and games, but you can't deny that they're pushing some sort of agenda here. Histories achievements and failures were not obtained through a single demographic, but as a collective. So it's important for movies and games to be aware of that, but when it becomes a priority to make a character a certain race, sex, or LGBT instead of making a good character; or most importantly a good narrative then that's when it becomes a problem. Do people like Kratos because he's Greek or is it the deep lore and history that surrounds that character; as well as the complex motives and morals associated with that character? Kevin Conroy will forever be the best Batman voice and interpretation of the character to ever live. He was the freaking Batman, but also tured out to be gay(which isn't a problem). Kevin had great respect for the character and knew how much that character meant to the fans, so I doubt Kevin would want Batman to be gay just because he's attracted to men. That seems to be a thing now a days that once an actor or actress comes out as gay they'll make that character gay on the show.

It's honestly pathetic to see how much the anti-woke crowd complains about the representation of minorities in media, especially in gaming. Something they seem to willfully ignore is that everyone wants to relate to the media they consume, and that they aren't the only ones consuming. It has only become more acceptable to be proud of who you are, yet they kick and scream all the way down without truly understanding where this disgust of their's comes from. While it could be many things, it seems to be almost purely rooted in emotion rather than logic. Which is evident by how the majority of them can't even define the term woke. And although emotions are easy to get caught up in, how can it be a bad thing that people are becoming more free to openly be and see themselves whatever they may be? Gaming is for leisure, an escape from reality. Except everyone is trying to escape, even the minorities that some claim to be "infecting" the media that has nearly solely only appealed to the majority. The majority is constantly inching closer and closer to the minority, it's time to sit down and truly understand where this disgust of their's truly comes from and if it's really morally or logically justifiable. They're aware of this, which is why many hide their bigotry through acronyms, terms like woke, or thinly-veiled "criticisms". This is a total misinterpretation of the anti-woke movement. Wokeism has tried to change the definition of racism from discrimination based on race, to “white people bad”. They hamfistedly force diversity and their extreme left wing agenda into media, at the expense of storytelling and character development. When the vast majority of your audience does not adhere to the tenets of extreme left ideology, it is very difficult to enjoy media that is so clearly interested in promoting it, instead of focusing on story and character.
Video games aren't as negatively impacted by agenda than movies and TV shows are as the quality of the final product hinges less on script and character writing. Any messaging should come secondary to how well the game feels when playing. That being said, games sabotage themselves when they cater to "The Message," just as when they fail to resolve technical problems or indulge in predatory pricing schemes.
Any game, movie, tv show, or other piece of entertainment media trying to send "The Message" is not entertainment, it then becomes propaganda, and many people including myself will never find themselves supporting a product that spreads such propaganda, even if the game, movie, or show, is well made otherwise, that one message they slip in here and there instantly kills any enjoyment many people may be having.
Using the same logic as the people who made "woke" a term. A words meaning can change based on its societal perception and i personally believe most people see this term as something that has an agenda to bend our perception of reality and to try and change what i would consider nature by promoting things that are not compatible with how nature itself is laid out blurring the lines between male and female and effectively confusing much of the youth who currently spend a lot of time consuming such media. I remember when you had to look harder to find certain more progressive things in games. A lot of more criticisms of things that could be improved was met with people saying that if you have a peoblem you should make your own games. Now that there is more inclusive and progressive things in more mainstream games, they are complaining that people actually made the games. It is honestly funny, but also still a lot more can be done.

The scene where shrek forcefully puts her in his shoulders, modern writers would never write such a scene cuz that is wrong way to treat a woman, that is toxic mascunility, even if it's contributing something to the story to move forward, they would never write a scene like that cuz it is against proggresive woke rules. Setting such rules and regulations will limit the story from being it's best. I think games like battlefield 5 that disregarded historical accuracy and put women on the front lines in order to empower women and then turning around and claiming it’s historical is the problem, same with when Star Wars Disney eliminated the original cast, which could’ve been done well had they done one of these two things, focused in on Flynn as the protagonist, he had a pretty good introduction and great character development early on, had they built on that and not made him into more of a character to make fun of or laugh at I would’ve probably still followed Star Wars, with Rey same thing except a bit different, had Disney focused on making Rey gain her powers and earn it along with her skills, I would’ve been much more interested, but instead it is all handed to her, and this seems cheap and lazy, a cop out to empowering women, which honestly hurts the message they’re trying to send. By making Rey earn her powers it helps motivate women more realistically to fight for what they want in life like Rey should have, but in the case of what they did, it more motivates women to demand to be handed what they want. Rey is recourceful upbeat stoic compassionate and strong, but has no actual flaws. It isn’t always the message itself, but the execution of the message, the message should not be clear, it should make you stay immersed in the movie and make you come to that realization on your own based on what you saw, but making unrealistic movies in order to push these messages makes the movies predictably flop, same with pretty much every woke messaging game released. We do not want to be preached to when trying to enjoy entertainment.

@@TurfNationYT well pronouns are not controversial when there is only 2 available to choose from, it gets to be an issue when the idea of something other than men and women exist, pronouns should only have to do with your gender, and your gender cannot be changed, nor can you create a new gender out of thin air, but I suppose we can agree to disagree on this one. When it comes to homosexuality being forced upon people in games, it’s not a very big issue, the issue generally is similar to Star Wars or the battlefield 5 case, mass effect for example did well to make it entirely optional and at no point would any character shame you for choosing straight or gay, nor was it hinted that either or was the better or correct choice, it was entirely up to the player. Also I am not at all against being open about your sexuality, letting people know you’re homosexual every now and then is fine, but saying it all the time, and having pride in it as if being straight is not something to have pride in is what gets to a lot of people. I personally don’t understand why anyone would be prideful in sexuality gay or straight, because that’s our personal preferences, not an achievement. The only time in which it would be an achievement is if for example you were in a family that either openly hated homosexuals or openly hated straight people, and you went against that and made your choice anyway despite them trying to change your mind. When it comes to straight people being the majority of those represented in movies shows and gaming, it is this way because that is how most people feel about their sexuality, so naturally that is what most people find appealing, but generally it isn’t to instill pride in being straight, it is just simply the way they are, which is the correct way to portray someone’s sexuality, just them being themselves, rather than making it as their biggest personality trait. Baldurs gate 3 is a game which does force it upon the player to an extent. I think the main problem with woke messaging is unrealistic women empowerment, and unrealistic diversity. When I say unrealistic diversity I mean for example having African American Vikings, obviously Vikings come from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Vikings: Valhalla is one guilty of this historical inaccuracy, it’s not to do with discrimination that I point this out, it’s that the actors should represent the historical figures, so having actors from those countries would’ve been much more natural and would make perfect sense. I think the way the falcon and the winter soldier pushed their message was entirely the wrong way to do it, and alienated a lot of people that way, because for example falcons speech where he says “do better” pisses people off because he simply says do better without offering any sort of a solution, much like politicians with no solutions do to get elected. Overall I think woke messaging can be done without sabotaging the story of any given piece of entertainment, even if I don’t like the messaging itself I can overlook it if it is not intrusive to the story and breaks my immersion in the story.

A game can be good even if it's woke. I think some different angles of criticisms shouldn't be conflated. Pointing out wokeness in a game is a legit point, but the game can still be good in terms of gameplay. I think it's not that woke makes game bad, but how wokeness, or for a better term, propaganda/ideology, can be inserted into a media like video game. I think it's okay to point out how companies are pushing certain ideologies, sometimes less sometimes overly blatant, which also could be possible that the pushing of these messages affects the gaming experience negatively.

A definition of woke that I stand behind is any media or product that foregoes quality for political idealism, whether Right or Left. In other words, instead of building tall and wide, companies/creators just build wide, hoping to get something right. Example, Disney's Princess and The Frog vs. Disney's LA The Little Mermaid.

What about games with overly political themes like Bioshock, Cyberpunk, Fallout, MGS, etc? I’d say games like those are way more political than a game that simply has a gay character, and they’re fantastic games. I think it’s pretty easy to find games that won’t have what you don’t like, and often times it’s incredibly easy to overlook. For example with Starfield, a person can just put in their pronoun and then they don’t have to worry about it ever again during that game. I just think you’re exaggerating a bit

The wokeness complaints are made ALONG WITH other criticisms of the game like Starfield has woke problems but the open world aspect is broken by invisible barriers and you can't actually fly to the planets etc. But you know that. Aren't some women bad people as well? Really?), believing in hundreds of genders that are essentially new names for different personality types, but we treat it as some super-enlightened invention, etc.
I think what also bothers people about wokeness is the condescending "know it all" attitude, instead of convincing someone, just pushing your worldview onto others and when they disagree (e.g. because they are a Muslim, or Buddhist or a Christian Catholic) shaming them for it.
I specifically was disappointed with BG3. I had this game in early access, and for the most of its development there were no pronouns, and body types, just standard sex distinction... because the developers knew that most of their early-buyers and testers were center, and center-right in their political opinions. The moment they released the game, they changed it all - classice bait and switch, really.

My very first video game all the way back in 1997 was Oddworld Abe's Oddyse, and it was VERY woke by today's standards.
You have this sweet factory owned by a race of industrialists that had the indigenous tribe enslaved and made to work at the factory, and due to overhunting the local wildlife(to turn to sweets) and rendering them endangered, their profits plunder.
They decide to kill their workers instead and turn to sweets, and as the protagonist(Abe), you must save the other workers, and destroy the factory.
If you fail to save a set number of workers, you get the bad ending.
Damn that actually sounds really cool, I might check that out. But yeah there are plenty of games from the past that would be deemed work nowadays that it just becomes a meaningless word to use

The idea that messages get in the way of stories always seemed silly to me. All stories have messages. All stories have politics whether they be undertones or explicit. Messages are essential for stories and I think that it's good to give a platform to marginalized voices. What people consider woke is too often just the reality of the world. There are women, minorities, and queer people in the real world so I don't know why them existing in stories makes it automatically woke. And I don't know why it's bad to tell stories about the experiences and community of marginalized people.
I think people have gotten more sensitive to theses issues in recent years too. The same is true with tv shows. For example, Game of Thrones and Avatar the Last Airbender both are shows that deal with patriarchal gender norms and how they hurt men and women. But when their sequel series, House of the Dragon and Legend of Korra came out, both were criticized for being woke despite not changing their politics.

I've seen a ton of people call Korra a mary sue despite her basically losing over half her fights. But it wasn't quite as bad as with House of the Dragon. That's really around the time when people started freaking out whenever the slightest bit of social commentary about gender is present. House of the Dragon depicted the harm traditional patriarchal values does to women just as Game of Thrones did. But it got a ton of hate for that until Rings of Power came along. Rings of Power wasn't great but the idea that its somehow the fault of wokeness that it was disappointing is laughable.
I don't know any minority group that is overrepresented in tv or video games. Generally speaking, both genres are still white men dominated or at least white people dominated. The MCU is still majority white male led even in phase 4 which has been labeled as woke by online people. As far as your victims comment goes, there is bigotry and exploitation in the real world. I was recently playing the Fable series, and they gave you the option to marry a gay or bisexual partner and ever since the third game to adopt children with gay couples. Hell the second game had a mission where you helped a guy find a blind date that was a man! You also get evil points for giving him a girl instead of a guy. That game came out in 2008 by the way.
That’s one example of a game being progressive, and I was surprised the first game had gay couples as an option in 2004. So yeah, “woke” gaming has been a thing for way longer than these nut jobs think. Also Samus from Metroid: her gender was a secret and no one thought her reveal was “woke propaganda”. Final Fantasy Tactics has a character called Argath Thadalfus who proves to be an asshole. He's a classist and believes that commoners are nothing but animals. Not only the game focuses on classism, but it also shows another villain besides the Lucavi and Ultima, religion. The Church of Glabados would silence people who dare to expose dark truths about it by any means necessary. History has proven that religion had controlled the masses and committed all sorts of vicious crimes and atrocities to protect themselves.

You can make a good game that happens to be woke, and you can make a woke game that happens to be good, but the risk of screwing up a video game is much higher when you have your political messaging foremost in the creation process. On the other hand, it’s sometimes fun to subvert the “woke” intentions of a game, like setting your pronouns to “don’t ask/don’t tell” or naming your char “transister desister.”

1 million percent agree. I had issues with the Last of Us 2, but it had nothing to do with LGBTQIA+ representation. I mean, duh, I like my group being represented more. I had problems with the mediocre gameplay and the story that wasn't coherent.

i think it is a balance act anyway. while having transgenders be present in a game like cyberpunk makes sense, it feels a bit out of place in high fantasy like bg3. like chicks with beards and stuff. I mean there is magic, but still feels a bit weird.

I’m starting to get really pissed with these Karen’s, bunch of degenerate whiny kids crying about the most ridiculous things which slowly starts to push me off the media.
The word "woke" is such a mess, it makes it almost impossible to have a genuine conversation. I remember a time in the mid 2010s when half of the people using the term were outspokenly left-wing or apolitical players/movie-goers, but now all I see people associating it to is far right nuts or civil rights activist. There is no nuance anymore and now you can dismiss criticisms as far right hate or far left propaganda.
I don't think most people complaining about destroying the suspension of disbelief care that the characters are a particular sex, sexual orientation, or skin color. Was Mass Effect woke for allowing you to play as a woman, or as a gay MC? It didn't break immersion, because the insertion was appropriate. Many of the "woke" examples don't make sense and betray the lack of care or skill the writers of the game (or the executives) have and the result is yet again a poor product, so it's no wonder that the public would end up rallying behind a catch-all term for this.
A lot of people don't see "woke" as "progressive ideas" but rather as "decisions based on greed or lack of skill painting themselves as progressive for virtue signalling and shielding from criticism". I also associate it a lot with hypocrisy, like how big brands try to stay relevant by showing rainbows during pride month (except for oppressive regions) then forget about all of that in the next month.
Of course, of the examples I saw mentioned in this video, several of them were also from ridiculous commenters (who cares that Thor has a beer belly, or that Ellie can live her already established sexuality in the next game), so it is true that a lot of people are unnecessarily outraged, and this muddies the waters even more.
Yeah that’s definitely a definition I’ve seen a couple times but not enough tbh, often times the use of the word lacks nuance. If people were more willing to have discussions like these rather than screaming about stuff then we’d be in a much better place
"woke" was hijacked from the black community by white liberals who use it as a progressive social crutch. The real meaning before racist white liberals stole it, was a term used among African American men to acknowledge their surroundings and be aware of profiling from law enforcement.
Tbh I wish this video had more views, seems pretty informed, interesting, and you pretty much addressed a sensitive theme without saying something like “either you are with us or against us”.

You know, sometimes I'd love to do a story where all the characters are either women, black, LGBT, poor, disabled, several of the above, or all of the above, just to piss off the anti-woke crowd.
Of course, I'd make it so it's still a good story with good writing and good characters.
Because in the end, it's not the intention of the maker that counts, it's how the made itself is, how the intentions are reflected in it.

I think you should do that story if you have something to say, if it’s a story you feel is worth telling, and if you want to make it diverse then all the power in the world to you. One of the reasons I started learning how to make video games is for a similar sentiment. Someone said that a black person can't be a samurai, and they definitely can't be gay, so I want to make a game where you play a black samurai where your lover is a white man (there's a reason for this). But the more I look into it the more I realize I can make it a beautiful love story and heroine journey, and I think that can be really beautiful. Hopefully my skills will progress enough to do it justice.

While I do agree that saying something is woke is not a good argument, you have to look at actions and events that make people give it validity.
You mentioned Hogwarts Legacy, people attempted to boycott that game because they thought it was endorsing anti lgbtq, even though JK Rowling had nothing to do with the making of the game. Which also extended to people trying to stream it, look what happened to Hasan Piker.
For Anita Sarkeesian, she fired the first shots and then didn’t want to deal with the backlash by disabling comments. No one should get death threats or bullied but she entered the ring and didn’t want to have to hold her ground. More importantly, imo, she really reached with a lot of her critiques. She points out Zelda having to be rescued in Ocarina of Time but glosses over the fact that Zelda guides Link through out his adventure and uses her magic to hold down Ganon so Link could deal the final blow. It was also never enough for her. Sarkeesian would complain about there not being a female Link. We then got Linkle in Hyrule Warriors, who I think is an awesome character and would like to see more of, she then complains that Nintendo needs to do a trans version of Link. She constantly hurts her credibility then cries no fair when people point it out.
As far as sexualizing in video games, this can go to far, just look at Nexus Mods, having said that, I think the opposite extreme is bad too. Best example I can think of is Mass Effect Andromeda. They didn’t want to make the female characters look sexy so instead the all looked either blank or bizarre, especially the female version of the main character. Later on they actually had to remodel the faces to course correct.
To add on to that, men get sexualized too, not just women. You use MK as an example, look at Lui Kang, Look at Johny Cage, heck, look at every Final Fantasy protagonist.
So what does the balance look like to you?
Lastly is the representation point. You are right representation is good, but it can and has gotten preachy and in your face. Sometimes even condescending about it. Some examples that come to mind from other media are Velma, High Guardian Spice, and Santa Inc. Some cases putting out misinformation like Cleopatra.
Ultimately, both sides are to blame here, you are right, there are anti woke people who get offended like crazy but I have seen just as much on the other side. Neither side wants to hold their own accountable and I think the discourse will only get worse.

Like you said it's not a bad thing they're adding more diversity and inclusion into movies and games, but you can't deny that they're pushing some sort of agenda here. Histories achievements and failures were not obtained through a single demographic, but as a collective. So it's important for movies and games to be aware of that, but when it becomes a priority to make a character a certain race, sex, or LGBT instead of making a good character; or most importantly a good narrative then that's when it becomes a problem.

Kevin Conroy will forever be the best Batman voice and interpretation of the character to ever live. He was the freaking Batman, but also tured out to be gay(which isn't a problem). Kevin had great respect for the character and knew how much that character meant to the fans, so I doubt Kevin would want Batman to be gay just because he's attracted to men. That seems to be a thing now a days that once an actor or actress comes out as gay they'll make that character gay on the show.

It's honestly pathetic to see how much the anti-woke crowd complains about the representation of minorities in media, especially in gaming. Something they seem to willfully ignore is that everyone wants to relate to the media they consume, and that they aren't the only ones consuming. It has only become more acceptable to be proud of who you are, yet they kick and scream all the way down without truly understanding where this disgust of their's comes from. While it could be many things, it seems to be almost purely rooted in emotion rather than logic. Which is evident by how the majority of them can't even define the term woke. And although emotions are easy to get caught up in, how can it be a bad thing that people are becoming more free to openly be and see themselves whatever they may be? Gaming is for leisure, an escape from reality. Except everyone is trying to escape, even the minorities that some claim to be "infecting" the media that has nearly solely only appealed to the majority. The majority is constantly inching closer and closer to the minority, it's time to sit down and truly understand where this disgust of their's truly comes from and if it's really morally or logically justifiable. They're aware of this, which is why many hide their bigotry through acronyms, terms like woke, or thinly-veiled "criticisms". It seems that the best thing us minorities can do is to keep being proud of who we are and show the world how insignificant the issue of us existing really is

This is a total misinterpretation of the anti-woke movement. Wokeism has tried to change the definition of racism from discrimination based on race, to “white people bad”. They hamfistedly force diversity and their extreme left wing agenda into media, at the expense of storytelling and character development. When the vast majority of your audience does not adhere to the tenets of extreme left ideology, it is very difficult to enjoy media that is so clearly interested in promoting it, instead of focusing on story and character.
Video games aren't as negatively impacted by agenda than movies and TV shows are as the quality of the final product hinges less on script and character writing. Any messaging should come secondary to how well the game feels when playing.
That being said, games sabotage themselves when they cater to "The Message," just as when they fail to resolve technical problems or indulge in predatory pricing schemes.
Any game, movie, tv show, or other piece of entertainment media trying to send "The Message" is not entertainment, it then becomes propaganda, and many people including myself will never find themselves supporting a product that spreads such propaganda, even if the game, movie, or show, is well made otherwise, that one message they slip in here and there instantly kills any enjoyment many people may be having.
Using the same logic as the people who made "woke" a term. A words meaning can change based on its societal perception and i personally believe most people see this term as something that has an agenda to bend our perception of reality and to try and change what i would consider nature by promoting things that are not compatible with how nature itself is laid out blurring the lines between male and female and effectively confusing much of the youth who currently spend a lot of time consuming such media. I remember when you had to look harder to find certain more progressive things in games. A lot of more criticisms of things that could be improved was met with people saying that if you have a peoblem you should make your own games.
Now that there is more inclusive and progressive things in more mainstream games, they are complaining that people actually made the games. It is honestly funny, but also still a lot more can be done.

In shrek when Fiona fights men, it works because, one, the fact that she's an ogre, two, she's likable, she doesn't hate being rescued by a man. The scene where shrek forcefully puts her in his shoulders, modern writers would never write such a scene cuz that is wrong way to treat a woman, that is toxic mascunility, even if it's contributing something to the story to move forward, they would never write a scene like that cuz it is against proggresive woke rules. Setting such rules and regulations will limit the story from being it's best. It's a wrong idea to think I can only indentify with a character if the character is same color/gender as mine, cuz then you'll never be satisfied, you'll always hate other race.

Progressives don't claim all Mary Sue character, often they are just as a problem as any other shallow character written for fanservice reasons. Like a problem in their own was as Meagan Fox's character in Transformers. There has been plenty of badly written characters for a very long time, it is just that now that there are the bad girl boss characters that reactionaries have a problem.
There has been male characters weitten that way for a long time too. But still, it is still not like there are a bunch of these type of characters that are queer, so it ain't like we are the ones really benefiting for Gary Stu like characters.

When it comes to “female characters that don’t look like perfect models” I’m not sure where this is coming from, I don’t care if a woman looks good on screen or not, I care about character development, and a good story, female led movies games and tv series are not something I avoid just because I don’t like the look of them, for you to assume such a thing is honestly to be expected, but I’ll move on.
When it comes to “gender neutral bathrooms” that is not really controversial, because that’s just a bathroom that men and women can use, just like gender neutral clothing meant for men and women.
I think games like battlefield 5 that disregarded historical accuracy and put women on the front lines in order to empower women and then turning around and claiming it’s historical is the problem, same with when Star Wars Disney eliminated the original cast, which could’ve been done well had they done one of these two things, focused in on Flynn as the protagonist, he had a pretty good introduction and great character development early on, had they built on that and not made him into more of a character to make fun of or laugh at I would’ve probably still followed Star Wars, with Rey same thing except a bit different, had Disney focused on making Rey gain her powers and earn it along with her skills, I would’ve been much more interested, but instead it is all handed to her, and this seems cheap and lazy, a cop out to empowering women, which honestly hurts the message they’re trying to send. By making Rey earn her powers it helps motivate women more realistically to fight for what they want in life like Rey should have, but in the case of what they did, it more motivates women to demand to be handed what they want. Rey is recourceful upbeat stoic compassionate and strong, but has no actual flaws.
It isn’t always the message itself, but the execution of the message, the message should not be clear, it should make you stay immersed in the movie and make you come to that realization on your own based on what you saw, but making unrealistic movies in order to push these messages makes the movies predictably flop, same with pretty much every woke messaging game released.
We do not want to be preached to when trying to enjoy entertainment.

And in a game like Starfield where there are human clones, people who get annoyed by pronouns are silly. Can you give me examples of gay people being shoved down our throats in games? I mean straight people and straightness in general are CONSTANTLY shown everywhere and yet nobody makes a big deal out of it, but it seems people get really upset when there are gay characters being openly gay rather than being very secretive about it. Fair enough, that’s valid, I didn’t mean to assume and I’m sorry for that. I sadly see too many people who complain about women in entertainment without any real argument beyond that, but no yeah I also have a problem with bad writing and when characters are barely fleshed out, however I attribute that to bad writing rather than wokeness, but many woke movies, tv shows and games are fantastic such as andor, Arcane, Baldur’s Gate 3, etc while many other woke stuff is really bad with lack luster writing. Maybe we understand the word woke differently, but I think we can agree that the inclusion of people with different skin colors, sexualities, genders, religions, etc, will never be a bad thing by itself, but the execution isn’t always great and the writing isn’t always great, just as is the case for the inclusion of white straight men in entertainment.

@@TurfNationYT well pronouns are not controversial when there is only 2 available to choose from, it gets to be an issue when the idea of something other than men and women exist, pronouns should only have to do with your gender, and your gender cannot be changed, nor can you create a new gender out of thin air, but I suppose we can agree to disagree on this one.
When it comes to homosexuality being forced upon people in games, it’s not a very big issue, the issue generally is similar to Star Wars or the battlefield 5 case, mass effect for example did well to make it entirely optional and at no point would any character shame you for choosing straight or gay, nor was it hinted that either or was the better or correct choice, it was entirely up to the player. Also I am not at all against being open about your sexuality, letting people know you’re homosexual every now and then is fine, but saying it all the time, and having pride in it as if being straight is not something to have pride in is what gets to a lot of people. I personally don’t understand why anyone would be prideful in sexuality gay or straight, because that’s our personal preferences, not an achievement. The only time in which it would be an achievement is if for example you were in a family that either openly hated homosexuals or openly hated straight people, and you went against that and made your choice anyway despite them trying to change your mind.
When it comes to straight people being the majority of those represented in movies shows and gaming, it is this way because that is how most people feel about their sexuality, so naturally that is what most people find appealing, but generally it isn’t to instill pride in being straight, it is just simply the way they are, which is the correct way to portray someone’s sexuality, just them being themselves, rather than making it as their biggest personality trait.
Baldurs gate 3 is a game which does force it upon the player to an extent.
I think the main problem with woke messaging is unrealistic women empowerment, and unrealistic diversity.
When I say unrealistic diversity I mean for example having African American Vikings, obviously Vikings come from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Vikings: Valhalla is one guilty of this historical inaccuracy, it’s not to do with discrimination that I point this out, it’s that the actors should represent the historical figures, so having actors from those countries would’ve been much more natural and would make perfect sense. I think the way the falcon and the winter soldier pushed their message was entirely the wrong way to do it, and alienated a lot of people that way, because for example falcons speech where he says “do better” pisses people off because he simply says do better without offering any sort of a solution, much like politicians with no solutions do to get elected.
Overall I think woke messaging can be done without sabotaging the story of any given piece of entertainment, even if I don’t like the messaging itself I can overlook it if it is not intrusive to the story and breaks my immersion in the story.

A game can be good even if it's woke. I think some different angles of criticisms shouldn't be conflated. Pointing out wokeness in a game is a legit point, but the game can still be good in terms of gameplay. I think it's not that woke makes game bad, but how wokeness, or for a better term, propaganda/ideology, can be inserted into a media like video game. I think it's okay to point out how companies are pushing certain ideologies, sometimes less sometimes overly blatant, which also could be possible that the pushing of these messages affects the gaming experience negatively.

A definition of woke that I stand behind is any media or product that foregoes quality for political idealism, whether Right or Left. What about games with overly political themes like Bioshock, Cyberpunk, Fallout, MGS, etc? I’d say games like those are way more political than a game that simply has a gay character, and they’re fantastic games. I think it’s pretty easy to find games that won’t have what you don’t like, and often times it’s incredibly easy to overlook. For example with Starfield, a person can just put in their pronoun and then they don’t have to worry about it ever again during that game. I just think you’re exaggerating a bit

There is no good way to implement identity politics into a game its all garbage to begin with.
