Used to do this for a living as a young man. Now, 40 years later I plan to do it as a hobby. I have a lot of my old hand tools. Always has been very soothing for me.
Your wife is lucky to have you... I’ve always wanted a jeweler at home...when if you need a ring smaller, because your finer is 5.5 and you always get 7’s instead of me using a bandaid to make it smaller, I’d ask you to fix it
Would love to see what this looks like at a smaller scale. Do you have all these tools or can you get away with a lot less, if your jsut resizing for yourself, friends & fam here and there.
Thank you for showing this and for Sergei's hard work! In these days of computers taking over everything, it's nice to still see craftmanship, skill and artistry at work :)
Fantastic Video, so informative, and stunning work on Sergey's part. A real reminder of how important the touch of an extremely skilled craftsman is. Thank You.
You can slightly see where the ring isn't rounded 100% where it was welded and I think that's the only noticeable thing to someone with a good eye. But I was a bench jeweler apprentice before and people think it's a chill, work with your hands, artsy job but it's kinda like McDonald's as in fast pace. I had many rings come back for repolishing, finishing, and stone setting after I was done because the environment during the holidays was crazy and the floor was full. But these jewelers come to work and can get a load of 300 or more rings to be resized, repaired, redesigned, or polished and the clock doesn't stop ticking. He did great!!
At 1:00 is a great tool that can save time aligning the ends flush. Bow Closing Ring Bending Brass Jaw Pliers by Eurotools. It looks like he has the brass covered in duct tape to protect the ring surface. This tool is going on my list, thanks! Protecting the stone in water while soldering is new to my as well. Nice tips!
very nice! 👍 thanks for sharing. any tips on avoiding firescale if this was a sterling ring? i.e., how would you protect it from oxidation while the stone setting is in water, and how would you keep up the temperature at the solder joint while the sterling is conducting that heat into the water? maybe is there a different method to size a ring down with highly conducive metals?
I saw it too, and purposely started looking through the comments to see if anyone else saw it. Quickly glancing, you wouldn't notice, but I'm a stickler for detail. It would bother me. haha
NICE! Much better than adding beads to the inside shank to make it feel smaller on the finger. It's probably much more complicated when the ring is thicker and has grooves all around to do it the professional way as shown in the video.
When a ring is too big for your finger they cut the shank (inside part of the ring facing the palm) to remove a small amount of gold then solder it together again to form a smaller ring.
Dan, sizing beads are usually offered when the customer has large knuckles but a skinny finger. The beads can work over the knuckle but a smaller all-around band cant. You can also ask for the sliver of gold back from where they size your ring down, but bear in mind that they take out just 2.5mm per size, and that's not including the width of the two sawblade cuts. The sad part is you probably paid more to ADD the gold beads to your ring than the value of any gold that was removed.
he seemed pretty rough on the ring, i like to take my time when sizing an expensive ring. but putting the stone in water is pretty convenient, i coat the stone with a compound called got-stop which keeps the stone cool even if very high temperatures are used. im going to go and try the water method right now.
It's a good question. There are quite a few jobs in the field. I'd imagine if you get the tools and practice you can do the work freelance if you're good and earn a reputation. That said, look at metal craft courses at a fine arts college, course availability is limited but for special students(less than 8 credits per quarter), and students over 50, I have seen alot of accommodation, so that's a good option as well. I will be bronze casting next quarter, myself, which is pretty awesome if you ask me. :D Good luck!
Hello, im a bit new to silver smithing, im still getting the professional tools bought and delivered, ive watched your video over and over to help set me in the right direction with the correct tools. Now, i have practice metals, but i know it will take awhile before im good enough to truly fix my favorite pieces, is there a way i could pay you to resize a few rings and repair a bracelet for me? They're sterling silver, with stones, from orange and blue topaz , onyx, all the way to Swarovski crystals. Can you please help?
Nice technique sir. Sir can it be done on 9.25 starling silver with solitaire AD stones or any other imitation ring? Or this flame process will ruin the total ring if it's not pure silver?
Will the ring inner circle be perfectly round? Why do you not measure the ring size again? (I assume the customer might have requested to reduce to a certain size/mm? Thanks.
My wife reacts to white gold/silver so we opted for platinum rings. They were fine for 10 years untill she sent them to our jeweller to re size. Since having had it back the ring reacts with her skin. Is there any way they have used other materials in the re sizing? Any advise on this welcome?
I need to find someone like this that’ll take in a intern… I wish people like this were more willing to teach the younger generation that is really interested in this kind of work… I tried the same thing with gunsmithing but, again, I couldn’t find anyone willing to teach me the skills that schooling doesn’t teach…
when they remove that extra metal to it(mine would be white gold) what happens to it does the jeweler have them forever or do they solder it back together with the other section of the ring?
If they brazed the cut piece back in the ring, it would be the same size as the starting diameter. Brazing metal or solders typically have a lower melting point than the work piece otherwise it would all melt and droop. The jewelers keep any leftover scrap and collect it over time, melt it all together and sell it for somewhere near spot after assay
I got my pave engagement ring resized by a local jeweler. the joint is a little crooked and i can still see mark of the resized on the inside where it was sealed together. is this an easy fix. i dont want it to be thinner or worse if he messed up because obviously his craftsmanship isnt great.
as a jeweler yes it is an easy fix. They probably didn't file it right or polished it enough. If you're worried about being thinner you can also get a half shank and it will be like brand new.
Steel Mandrel and rubber mallet if making a half size adjustment is usually fine when working with gold, platinum or silver. Titanium and tungsten are a different story though, not recommended
If you had to cut the ring off for being too small, why are you sizing it smaller? Also no rhodium process after steaming? Thats really white platinum....
@@Jinjin000w starting with a fresh ring and a damaged one are not the same process. Too many possible issues and sometimes liability. So not the same process. Wish it was though!
They charge because they're performing a service, numbnuts. Unless you want to wear an oversized ring or have all the expensive tools and skills to resize it, this is a deal.
Why don’t you try and make it smaller and see how easy it is. If you have the knowledge to do it, then you’re not going to a jeweler to get the job done… lol
I have been a jeweler for 25 years.. i saw a many mistakes. he def had good technique in some stages. omg. Im going to have to start a channel. nor have i ever heat sank a diamond, and part of the stone -the culet was dry. thats sooooo dangerous, the final pic on the finished item. i would not have shown, before inspecting . for it was obliviously not perfect.
I would assume if people saw a ring reemoveed duee to being too small, they may be coming back to watch a ring be resized by...idk making larger to fit not smaller?

Perfectly said man
You guys are fast! Sergei is a master craftsman!
you gotta be fast to make money.
Fantastic Video, so informative, and stunning work on Sergey's part. A real reminder of how important the touch of an extremely skilled craftsman is. Thank You.
And I want to say Sergei did a beautiful job.
+Susan Newman He did decent job ,yes. Only because he don't use the "solder" ,he weld the ring . NOT many jewelers weld the rings together .
You must weld platinum due to the high fusing temperature. Gold and silver can be soldered.

At 6:24 you can see the joint still has an indented un-flushed surface on the shank. Did I see it wrong?
I saw it too, and purposely started looking through the comments to see if anyone else saw it. Quickly glancing, you wouldn't notice, but I'm a stickler for detail. It would bother me. haha
I saw it too! Failed..
I saw that also but upon further inspection I think it is just an optical illusion from the different things reflecting in the metal.
It’s a reflection.
I seen it too
All these processes! How much platinum powder ended up on the floor of the workshop????
NICE! Much better than adding beads to the inside shank to make it feel smaller on the finger. It's probably much more complicated when the ring is thicker and has grooves all around to do it the professional way as shown in the video.
Dan Seabreeze I had that gold beads added because I didn't want them taking gold
Dan Seabreeze why would they take the gold?

A paste that some how stops heat transfer? That doesn't seem physics friendly.
To me, It just looked like he knew what he was doing.
@@mds1986ms I don't think anything was stated to imply the stopping of 'heat transfer'. The compound does exactly the opposite.
He makes it look so easy ❤
Thank you for showing this, I learned a lot, very much appreciated.

We are opening up a jewellery shop and i need those machines. Where can i buy them? also need moulds for the ring? where can i get all the tools?
the little saw used to cut a section out of the ring 0:48 what is that saw called?

What size diamond was that? Debating between 4 and 6 prong.
Is it me or was I able to see the soldered portion in the finished ring?

Can you resize fashion jewelry plated in 18kt gold?
thanks, I was wondering how you dothat.
wow excellent craftmanship
Very informative 👍🏾😁😁
I just had my diamond heart ruby ring sized and fixed the jeweler did wonderful job I'm very happy with it.
what is the crucible called with the water? and what is holding the ring?
So I get a silver ring at 7 size and resize it up to 8 or 8.5,will it weaken the ring itself?
sweet - that's a skilled artist!!!
Is it possible to resize a gold plated ring and if so how easy or difficult is it to do?
Pinky Malin yes, whatever the base metal is used to bond it, then re plate the ring
This was fun to watch. (:
Is it possible to resize a ring to make it smaller without cutting it? And if not, what happens with the little piece cutted?
Well then, certainly I have no choice
This is so interesting to watch.
Helpful video - thanks! Love the accent.
Silver or white gold . Nice work
please tell about your camera... i want to purchase this now ....nice clearity... atleast cost and name detail
What happens if it has engraving words on the inside the ring?
Recut
How much does it cost to resize the ring?
35$, 32,50€
If it cost , ask to keep the left over previous metal whether is gold or platinum
Is it possible with stainless steel?
when they remove that extra metal to it(mine would be white gold) what happens to it does the jeweler have them forever or do they solder it back together with the other section of the ring?

So you charge to make smaller and get to keep some gold for yourself. Nice deal.
Probably not. When I have had rings sized. I get the gold piece back in a baggie. My jeweler says to keep it in case I want to size back up.
