I was once a jeweler and jewelry designer (from age 19 - 30). From (1995 - 2000) I owned a fine jewelry store. Then I realized how much I hated retail and working 80 hours a week so I closed the store. Having a daughter may have influenced that to some degree. A bizarre opportunity led to becoming a firefighter for three years at which time I went back to college and ultimately became a network engineer. I guess now that I am in my 50s I can finally look back with some sense of nostalgia.
I bet you knew Andy from Stuller.

Nice technique. Can it be resize down on 9.25 starling silver with solitaire AD stones or any other imitation ring? Or this flame process will ruin the total ring if it's not pure silver?

I know this video is a few years old but I noticed that you did not check any of the prongs in this setting......shouldn't you tighten up the prongs before saying the ring is done? I am confused because I just called yesterday to get a ring resized and those that I talked to said the rings would also need to have the prongs adjusted and tightened. (which adds to the cost of getting a ring resized) Just wondering...?

Thanks Shawn for this video...I have a ring that needs sized down and asked the jeweler if I could keep the piece of gold that will be cut away...he said that it would be gold dust and I could keep that for an extra $10. But now that I see it is an actual piece that gets cut away I now know he was lying to me. If a client asks for their gold back would you give it to them? Btw the charge was $60.00 CAN to have it sized down.

hi Shawn. Thanks for the great videos, it’s really special to get to see you at work. The rhodium plating is a neat trick, but as for me I like the natural lustre of white gold and would want it plain if it was my ring. What are your thoughts on the different white gold alloys -like nickel v. palladium?

Thanks for the video, Shawn. What advice can you give me on sizing a pave setting ring? I have been practicing on a few 14k gold rings and keep having stones fall off.

Thanks for the informative video I have a question for Shawn. Can a 14k rose gold ring be resized? I just read online that rose gold cannot be.

Any karat rose gold ring can be sized UP OR DOWN but the metal needs to be of rose gold as well if a piece is being added, as well as the solder used. If not then it will be an apparent difference in color, especially after time. Many goldsmiths don’t want to alloy the metal to match so some decline the job or do it incorrectly. Rose Gold solder is available but can be made at the bench in a pinch by adding Rose gold alloy to existing hard 14K Solder.

In a platinum ring situation you just use a thin sheet of platinum as well, instead of solder? Thanks!!

Is the 2mm per size rule regardless of shank thickness?
