@Momento Mori yup- demonstrated pre intent to do violence. The DA: "The sign proves had set a trap long in advance and was just laying in wait for his victim- our precious, innocent visitor." Every gun owner should read the court cases- Ayoob has a bunch of them. Another no-no: Modifying the weapon. "He had a hair trigger installed...He had extra ammo capacity added...obviously hungry to shoot someone in cold blood" Most people are their own worst enemy. I find too many gun owners to be outright delusional about what they think they are going to do in various scenarios. Let alone what the actual legal and moral repercussions would be. They have zero knowledge of what actual DAs, judges and juries do every single day. And not just in 'liberal' places.

17 year alarm guy here. A decade in DFW. Keep your tool on you, at all times. You'll be dead by the time the panel dials out, gets monitoring, monitoring calls you to see if it's a false alarm, then they call dispatch, then dispatch calls a unit, then a unit finally gets to you. Have a talking keypad by your bed so when your alarm goes off at 2 in the morning, you know exactly where, don't do an indoor siren, you won't be able to hear a #amn thing, or think with that thing screaming. If you have to have one, do an outdoor siren. Your neighbors will love you. Leave the door chime on so you can hear when something opens. Finally get some cameras. Prices have gone down, resolution has gone up, more important than an alarm in my opinion.

I have been a house painter and maintenance man for 25 years in a major city. My add is : KEEP LARGE PLANTS AWAY FROM YOUR HOUSE. The amount of activity a Juniper or Rhoddy can cover is incredible. I have found entire campsites right up against Dorms on a busy street. All hidden from view by bushes. It becomes a habit to just ignore the plant as it grows . I am often the first person to see a window or side door in years. The Homeowner just forgets its there

My dad is a LEO and he had an amazing habit of setting the alarm every night and kept his firearm close to his bedside but we never once went over what to do if someone came in and set the alarm off. So us kids never had a plan. That is something to think about as well. Go over a plan.

In Asian countries, we usually lock our doors all the time unless we're going in or out.
Although in my country we can't have guns as civilians, I've stashed multiple blades around my house in hidden areas, however, the closer to my bedroom, the longer and deadlier they are. So in the event they find one of the blades upon entering and decide to use it, I can retreat backwards and have access to a deadlier or longer ranged one than them to have the upper hand.
If for some reason I get cornered into my room, I'll have access to my Kukri-style machete.
Perhaps a similar concept can be applied in countries that allow civilians to have more types of weapons, putting the less lethal ones in the common area and the deadlier ones towards your room.

Here's one: if you are leaving for a road trip or to the airport don't load up your suitcases outside in the driveway where watching eyes may be present. Instead load up in the garage with the garage door shut and then lift the garage door once you are done. And another one I just learned: if going leaving for vacation after backing out on the driveway, close the garage door, make sure it locks, and then unplug the garage door opener. Codes from fobs and garage door openers can be breached or captured so if the door opener is unplugged or shut off at the breaker the bad guy is SOL going through garage.

I used to do security consultations for homeowners. One thing I was always suggesting was removing ladders and things like hammers, or other tools that will allow someone to easily break into the home. If they are going to break in, at least don't provide them the tools to do it. Otherwise, you covered a lot of the good main concepts. Other suggestion would be not to put that brand new flat screen TV box out on the curb for recycling / trash pickup to advertise what you have. Cut the box into small pieces and stage it so that nobody can see the outside of the box. This goes with anything that would look valuable (power tools, electronics etc....)

When it comes to defense of ones self, home, or vehicle I remind people of that old joke that in escaping from a bear you don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun your buddy. The reason I make that comparison is because we don't need to be full proof. We just need to be a harder target than the rest of the potential targets. If you neighbor's houses are easier you just became a LOT less likely to get burgled.
Great tips John. I am always perplexed by people not using their door and window locks. I keep mine locked while I'm home asleep or awake. I figure the most valuable things in the home are my family not my stuff. Most people seem to only think of their things being protected by locks. The little things we do are WAY more effective than the elaborate things we almost do, or sometimes do.

I had a “delivery” driver try to open my front door last week. The door was locked and I asked, through the Ring door bell, what the hell he was doing. He took off but my cameras got the plate number on his ubiquitous white van. The police have been informed. BTW. I was home and before he was out the driveway I had both my Benelli M-3 shotgun and Sig 226. It would not have ended well for him if he had come through the door. (Jail or worse)

I walk my dogs at night and the wee hours of the morning and I can almost always tell when my neighbors have gone on vacation because they change their homes appearance. What I mean by that is I go by a house every night, car in driveway, pickup truck parked in the street. Its like that every night. Then the car is gone and the pickup is in the driveway backed up all the way to the garage door, almost touching. Criminals will frequently case a location and take notes on the appearance of their target, something like the above scenario will key them in immediately that someone is on a vacation.

We own a medium-size security alarm business and all I can say is major plus-1 to all of that; ESPECIALLY number 4. The best equipment/hardware/tools/gear in the world accomplish nothing if they're not used, used correctly, and used always. It's so frustrating when a customer has an alarm system, pays for monitoring service, and then doesn't use it. That's like paying for cable when you don't own a TV. We should be smarter than that.
    Well said Mr. Poet

  • @NGMonocrom

Another good bit of advice would be to forgo the generic signs for the front lawn that say _"Protected by...."_ when there's no actual system in place. The signs by themselves might scare away petty thieves, but the Pros know which signs are legit, and which ones are fake. Thus making a home an easier target.
Basically, your poker face stinks and they know you're bluffing.

    • @springbloom5940
      @springbloom5940 5 років тому +12

This goes for self-defense, in general. The scenario most people are most prepared for, amounts to an execution, with an adversary facing them at 10'. They never imagine theyll shoot that guy 3 or 4 times and then fight over the gun until he bleeds out. Its not just a consequence of 'flat range thinking', but rather hero complex thinking, where everyone imagines the ideal scenario that they will perform most impressively in. They think 'my opponent will be facing me in a fair fight and Im going smoke him full of holes so fast he wont know WTF hit him'. Mostly, they think there will be no doubt, or question that they *had* to shoot and that it will be clean and clear of conscience. They dont expect to have someone they would never want to get close to, moaning and leaking like a rusty bucket, all over the hallway outside their bedroom, apologizing and confessing to you like his Priest and pleading with you to unshoot him. They dont expect that the person they are dozens of times more likely to kill, will be someone they know; someone they care about. They dont expect to have their house haunted by they guy(s) they killed, there. They dont expect a profoundly intimate experience, that *no one* can ever share or understand.
      TL;DR
People who need to get shot, tend to make it difficult.

I appreciate this video for the fact that everything he mentioned was simply about prevention, the best way to be safe is to prevent yourself from ever being harmed, then being prepared if the harm actually shows up. In the medical field, we call it preventative care, the best treatment for a heart attack is to prevent the patient from ever having one by controlling high blood pressure and diabetes, two of the biggest causes of heart attacks. In home defense, don't make yourself look like something a criminal would target.

Inside lighting is easy, buy timers! There are some they will turn on and off at a few minutes difference. That way your living room light doesn't go on at exactly 5pm each night. Also start using them before you go on vacation so the times appear genuine. Also, turn off/lock your garage door so it can't be opened with a remote.

If you have contractors working on the interior/exterior of your house, hide/lockup anything of value easily snatched so as not to advertise what you have. I had one worker ask me, "Are those security cameras you have mounted around your house?" I said yep. Didn't see him with the work crew after that. Makes you wonder if thieves "hire on" just to case places for future reference.

Also I would often need to rekey a homes as well. It takes less then 2 minutes to get in a home with little or no external damage. And most people don't care that someone is at there neighbors home. It could be a contractor or something. So all you wps make certain your windows are locked bathrooms especially. Some people you need at sometime in your life, a member if the US Military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard), a good Doctor, a fireman/fire department, a police officer, a good lawyer and last but not least a good Private Security Professional/Locksmith.
A good Private Security Professional/Locksmith will know how to review your home/business for security products that will fit your budget and how to install and use the products correctly to protect your home. Many people think it is just a trip to the local home supply store for better locks for their home but there is much more to locks and keys then one might think.
When it comes to locks there are many locks that are really not that good but then there are those that are really good, just upgrading from a lock you would use on your home to a medium grade commercial lock is a big improvement to your home security or even another step would be to use a heavy duty commercial lock on your home and have high security cylinders installed in the lock (medium or heavy duty commercial grade) to improve pick resistance, help bump resistance, drill resistance and allow for key control.
What I mean by key control is the ability to keep people from duplicate your key and I am not talking about a key that is just stamped with "Do Not Duplicate/Copy". What I am talking about are keys that only you can get copied because the keys are restricted keys that only the owner of the lock can get copies of by providing a credential for prof of ownership of the lock and key (think something that looks like a credit card) that must be presented at the time an order for duplicate keys is made. Many of the High Security Lock manufactures will send a company representative to count uncut and miss cut keys to ensure that their products that use restricted keys and key ways remain secure from unauthorized duplication of keys.
When it comes to picking a Private Security Professional/Locksmith/Alarm Installer find out what Professional Security Organizations the company/person is associated with and give the association a call to verify that they are really a member of that organization or check the organizations website to see if they are a member.
I am a Navy Vet and I spent many years working as a Private Security Professional/Locksmith/Theft Prevention Specialist. When it comes to security a good knowledgeable local Private Security Professional/Locksmith/Alarm Installer will know what are the best products for your area and budget.

For instance, my daughter usually is read some stories, and goes to bed within a certain time frame. If we're out of town, ill put the lamps in her room on a timer to coincide with that schedule. If I could, I'd do the same with the carriage lights in the driveway.
Aside from that, I'm a fan of stop sticks. Every window (and slider) in my home has sticks in the windows. They'll have to break them out, hopefully make a lot of noise in the process, to get in.

Keep up the good work. I just installed motion sensor lights all around my house, and put up beware of dog signs on every gate. And don't forget, actually having the dog helps a lot too. My two border collie mixes are the most protective animals I've ever seen, they're sheep dogs, and we are their flock. A Nat can't cart in the next county without them striking to attention and going to see what it is. One time a home security and alarm system salesman came to my door to sell me his system. He said "our system will notify you with a text message as soon as an intruder is at your door." I told him that's cool, my system notified me, that you were on the street, 50 feet from the door, and you could hear the alarm from there as well. That's not saying dogs replace an alarm system entirely, but for a family just starting out, they are an excellent option.

I live in rural Ontario (Canada) and here you're more likely to be robed if you do lock the door. Robbers go around checking doors, and if the front door is unlocked they either assume someone's home or that you have nothing of value and go away. But if it's locked they figure you must be out of the house for a significant amount of time or that you have lots of valuables and they'll brake a window. Same for vehicles, leave it unlocked and nothing inside but the registration and insurance, and maybe some garbage, they'll leave it alone

Yup. Pretty much a chihuahua with good PR. They do have a tough image and ominous bark, though.

If you can't afford an alarm system just buy some ADT Security stickers and put them on the windows and doors. No criminal will no you dont really have a system.

If you can't afford an alarm system, just go steel some ADT signs out of somebody's yard that has an alarm system. :)

My fraternity brothers gave me a hard time for locking my door when I was in the room. But I explained I grew up in Southern California during the Night Stalker’s spree and so I take that ____ seriously. If there’s a lock, lock it. Better safe than sorry.

I always leave the TV on in the living room when I go out and keep the volume up so you can hear it outside.

I do that in hotels, but just loud enough where you can hear it if you press your head to the door so as not to bother other people next door. All you have to be a little less desirable then the next guy. Can you do not disturb sign and make it look like you are in there.

My favorite are those amily window stickers on the back of mini vans or suv's that have the mom, the slot where the dad is missing from the divorce and then the kids and dig. Nothing like advertising to criminals it is just a mom and kids in the house.

Chris Abbett That would be incredibly short sighted. I’m as pro 2A as they come. But owning a firearm should be a personal decision. Not one forced onto us by the government. Last time I checked, this was still a free country. And freedom doesn’t mean making others do what you want them to.

@@yellowhammer72 true but to have freedom you must defend it and no way this will pass the rep just did it to take a stab at beams trying to take rights away. Mo also has 2nd amendment preservation act that will probably pass this is the bill I want to pass.

Would be awesome but it won't happen,as hard as they are trying to get everything we own there's no way they are going to pass them out, and that would be the only way to know that everyone has one.

Wish I could give you 4 thumbs up, I would add, if you have a dog, the dog must sleep inside the house, violent home invasions is a reality here in South Africa, so we also have security gates that separate the bedrooms from the rest of the house.

Awesome stuff as always John! I've been a victim of a break-in. The thieves through a landscape brick through my sliding glass door in the back of my house. I believe the reason why they only spent about 15 seconds in the house is because of the monitored alarm system and attached to the monitor alarm system was a very loud exterior siren. When they heard that really loud siren they grabbed my laptop and ran as fast as they could out the front door. After this incident I installed exterior and strategically placed interior video cameras. No issues since.

GREAT video, John! Could not agree more! Our subdivision HOA actually REQUIRES we have a sign in the yard saying that we have an Akita because he is deemed a "dangerous species" of dog (COMPLETE BS)! But it does have it's advantages to deter would-be thieves! My wife and I both work from home all week and her office overlooks the front door and mine looks out the sliding glass back door and garage entrance! The point about it doesn't help if you don't use it seems to me the most important, our doors automatically lock on closure and the alarm is ALWAYS active, day and night! Keep them coming, RLTW!
