I just had my original 2003 Apple-VW edition iPod 3rd gen repaired and will try to polish her up following your steps; I may try the nail polish trick on the back before sanding so that I keep all the branding/logo in place. Thanks for the gr8 video!
I got one when they came out and recently got another with just the battery replacement. It needs a little polishing but I love it. I might get another to iflash, but I kinda want to keep this one OG, 20gb HDD is still going good.
In high school, a buddy of mine had one of these. He’d listen to it in the cafeteria each morning, and I was mesmerized. It was like magic back then. Inspired, I saved money for half a year to get a silver Mini.
@@procellfoxreal It wouldn't get the black spot, the ipod mini was pretty big, the ipod nano with the long screen and camera was the most common to get a battery puff spot (black spot) know your ipods man
I was looking for a video like this last year and there was nothing even close... needless to say polishing my 1st and 3rd gen iPods could have gone much better. I'm gonna give it another go using your method!
hello, what is the size in millimeters of your sponge at 11:07 (or the brand?). I would like to have as good results as you with the product and I think that the right size of sponge sandpaper should make the difference. THANKS
I found that the blue magic metal polish works alot better than brasso. the blue magic is a finer compound so it gets much closer to mirror finish. in the video you can still see marks from the polishing.
I suggest nail polish over the Apple logo & engravings during polishing. It will wear off and need repeated application and can easily be removed later with acetone!
can you maybe further elaborate on what the "expensive" plastic polishing set incorporates? I'm trying to find something similar to that here in Euroland. :)
I would like to know, on the scale of 1-10, how much of a job did Brasso did? I cant find the expensive polish set in my area, i removed basic scratches on my ipod with a 2000 grit, however i dont have the right polish for it, i'd like to know how brasso does in terms of polishing quality? (P.s just wanna remove the tiny scratches, because i removed the bigger ones with 2000 grit)
Man, thank you for all the useful information. ESPECIALLY using a 12v usb instead of the proprietary firewire. Where did you purchase that cable from? Thanks..
@@RestoreTechnique Hi, 1 question. How do I connect my ipod 3rd gen to my 2013 macbook pro Mac OS BIG SUR? I just bought one. I CANT CONNECT IT. Ive tried 800 to Firewire 400 adapter -> ThunderBolt 2 to Firewire 800 Adapter -> USB-C/ThunderBolt 3 to ThunderBolt 2 adapter -> and usb-c to usb-a since my macbook 2013 does not have usb-c. It only says “Cannot use thunderbolt accessory”. Same thing on a pc with itunes.
I have watched this so many times. It's so soothing...I want to try restoring one myself (but I know it won't be as soothing when I'm fumbling around with no clue what I'm doing lol). Would love to see what you did with the 4th Gen!
Tesa 4965, red liner double sided tape. 2mm width, 0.2mm thickness. You can get imitations of this tape on ebay, the red liner tape. It's a strong acrylic adhesive with a plastic backing.
Greetings from Germany!!! Very nice video. I like the sounds of polishing and rubbing you make :-) At 12:03 you are pulling off two stripes from the hard drive. Where did you get them? Thanks! P.S. Looking forward to see 4th Gen.
Thank you so much for such a detailed video. Just received my 3 gen on the mail, got one “for pieces” because it was stuck on Apple logo, so just did the diagnostic and it is the hd ofc, which is fine, was afraid the screen would be defective too or something but everything else seems to work fine. Now I’ll just get a new battery and mod the storage. Will be looking into the thing to remove scratches on the front plate cause he looks really sad but your before and after just made my day.
I have a question about the cable, it says for gen 1,2,3 and 4, is there a specific reason why it wouldnt work on a 5th gen? I'm asking because I'm new to the ipods and I'm trying to revive a 5th gen, and I've read that maybe a firewire would give the power it needs to get past the "very low battery" screen
Do you think starting with Brasso actually helped you in the long run? I just bought the good stuff that you used, but wondering if I will get the same results without the Brasso...

I purchased this iPod last 2 weeks for $50 and has been working great so far, just few minor bugs. 3rd gen was the coolest iPod imo.

Great stuff. Always finish the back with 5000 & 7000 grit before applying either Autosol or Brasso. Always with my finger not a cloth

The scratches are probably too deep for the polish. You need to start with some fine sandpaper, like 1500 grit.
