i remember first watching this video several years back. Then I found this channel through the Thanksgiving video. I had a feeling whoever animated and narrated both videos were the same person. Looks like I've got my confirmation! hahah
I think this is a good video. It acknowledges Colombus' good and bad qualities, without exaggerating either of them. I also like the statement at the end that, if he never sailed west, someone else would have. I don't like how so many paint him as uniquely evil - at worst he was just a conquistador like the dozens who led expeditions after him. One thing I'd change about this video is to mention how the Encomandita system, which became prevalent through the Spanish New World, seems to be based on medieval European serfdom - which at the time of the first voyage had only been abolished in Iberia for twenty years.
I hope he does a video on Hitler as someone thats Native American i hate how they Paint him as Evil he was just trying to conquistdor trying to get most of Europe like the dozens led expeditions after him
Saying Columbus “discovered” America is the abbreviated version of saying “discovered it for Spain/Europe” because he was the reason they found out about it.
Not really, considering that several other ethnic groups made it to America before he did. (Vikings, Inuit, west Africans, etc.) On top of that, you can’t even discover a place that already existed. Finally, the Moors gave him the map that he used to get to America anyway…
@@Grant_of_Yahudah1) irrelevant 2) they were natives 3) plain false Columbus is the most important one of these guys, he mafe it back and kicked off firther exploration
Too oversimplified. Still heroic for the exploration and did try to stop some abuses. There were more power players on the islands than is mentioned here. Also, this is a bit of an unnecessary point, but saying that the natives found the taking of slaves to be an "injustice" is from our point of view and morals. (Although yes, I personally believe in higher given universal morality.) If anything they were more so against the idea of those in their group being deprived of the larger group out of understandable practical self-interest and valued in-group preference sense of themselves. So was taking slaves actually seen as a "universal" injustice by our standards in their culture back then? It is true that some Spanish Priests had objections due to their theological understanding.
Small correction: the Europeans did not think the world was smaller in terms of the circumference of the earth, but they relied on tuscanelli's map of Asia to postulate the ocean between the east and the west was much smaller than previously believed. Tuscanelli was a highly respected cartographer at the time, but he radically over estimated the size of Asia. Measuring by foreign accounts of the amount of time it took too travel from far away locations and not their distances. There was no way to verify the accuracy of the analysis of foreign accounts without actually funding the expedition. The Portuguese king didn't see a benefit in funding the voyage, but the Spanish were looking for an advantage over them so they decided to fund it anyway. There is no way Columbus would have been able to navigate his way back using an astrograph and a compass if he thought the earth were much smaller than it actually was.
I remember watching this a while ago, while I was still in middle school. During that time, I also remember making whiteboard animations inspired by this vid. It's nice to see that it is back up again. (Apparently, it seems as if this video was moved from the other channel to this channel for efficiency.)
