Mother Allen’s Hummingbird Nest: Only One Egg Hatches

- Thanks to Alik from Nature with Alik, we’re following the nest that a female Allen’s hummingbird our community named “Sapphire” has built on a string of Christmas Tree lights. Since she laid the second egg on January 29th, we have been watching her incubating and rolling the eggs and adding material to the nest.
On the evening of February 10th, she left and did not come back. We’ve seen this behavior before. Three years ago, Sapphire’s mother “Emerald” left the nest on a cold night for eleven hours. We were frantic, but both eggs hatched successfully and we think one of those babies is our “Sapphire.”
When Sapphire left her nest and the nighttime temperature dropped to 45 degrees, we were anxious for her to come back in the morning. She did not disappoint us! She came back and sat on the eggs again. During the day she continued to reinforce the nest, adding more fluff and spider webs to hold it all together.
On the morning of February 15, she left the nest and revealed to us that the first egg hatched during the night. We had a great time watching Sapphire feeding the tiny new arrival. There was even a visitor to the area, but Sapphire was quick to chase it away so it did not get close to her little baby.
We waited for the second egg to hatch, but as the days passed the chances there would be another hatch grew smaller and smaller. As of today’s publishing date of this video, twenty days have passed since the second egg was laid. Usually an egg will hatch within 18 days. When an egg does not hatch, either it was not fertilized to begin with or there is a developmental problem within the egg. The fate of the second egg is uncertain. It will either become crushed, becoming part of the nest floor or it will sit there in the nest until Sapphire’s baby has fledged.

Most important, the chick hatched and is well and healthy! Sapphire has been a great Mama and her little chick will grow strong and beautiful as she is! 💖
Time to make lemonade out of lemons. We have ourselves a new little Valentine🩷 to adore! Birds face so many challenges in their lives. We need to appreciate that. Sapphire's endurance is matched by the wonderful author of all of the videos provided. That's YOU Carole.
Thank you for all that you do, and all for your commitment and love for these darlings❤
Thank you for sharing. My grandson and I are having so much fun. I told him to show to his science teacher and the class, as they are studying animal life. We are noticing the second egg has not hatched yet. We observed Sapphire (love her cute little name), while feeding the first hatchling she would tap the egg. We imagine she is loosening the shell and signaling baby to come out. Mothers. We never give up on our babies, yes? We are so concerned…
Awww so adorable praying for the other baby 🙏

I sure hope it hatches !! I am praying for my precious lil Hummers to return as it gets real cold here where I m at. We had below zero this year and I am really worried if they will come back. I hope they did not die.I know they leave etc. I pray they do come back. Peace
So Precious ❤❤❤
That baby is soo tiny, first time seeing a hummingbirds chick
❤😘🕊
Maybe the other egg didn't cuz mom left it alone for so long in a 45° nite.😢
Or maybe she knew it was not fertilized. Gods creatures know what they are doing.
That's not enough to ruin an egg. The egg would have to freeze.
@@HummingbirdSpot glad you posted this!! My heart is relieved
What happen to Sapphires mom?
We don't know, but hummingbird's usually only live four to six years.
