Frampton was so underrated. Marketing him as a teen dream/pin up boy just destroyed his reputation as a brilliant guitarist. I was really young when Frampton Comes Alive came out and my bestie was obsessed with him. We spent hours listening to Alive and then bought all his studio albums....still 40 years on, I find his music and his voice to be sublime and his guitar playing so clean...it just shimmers. I saw his last tour and he is still just brilliant.
The Humble Pie live album has Frampton's best playing
Agreed ,this footage shows him, open jacket that tan etc,but as we know ,he is the real deal,a top class musician.
Underrated?????? He sold more copies of Comes Alive than anyone in History ffs!
Underrated and "sales" aren't the same thing. His reputation suffered because of the way he was marketed and he never regained that level of popularity. He never got the recognition that a Jimmy Page, or a Jeff Beck got and he really had to fight his way back into legitimacy. No one wanted to know...that's when Bowie hired him as a guitarist on his tour and gave him a chance
to shine again.@@garnetnewton-wade4091
The summer of "Frampton Comes Alive" was incredible. Everywhere you went, this album was playing. At every beach. Every party. Every park. Graduation celebrations. Blasting out of cars with their windows down. That summer I clearly remember sitting on the roof of my house, catching some rays, blasting this album. And not one neighbor complained!😎
I played the heck out of Frampton Comes Alive back then. Still have my original album.
Such a great lp. I was a kid it was a album not Dad or anyone complained about or was yelling at you turn that $#:t down. Accepted by the masses.
First off, this is the BEST version of this song. No whistling over the intro and a super clean performance of a great song! The audience were captivated and were there to listen and enjoy rather than drink, smoke, whistle and raise hell.
“Frampton Comes Alive” should be issued with every turntable sold.
lol, agreed!
Sloe Bone I agree!
Agree, along with Boston's first album.
@dark days LMAO. I still have my double LP. And I remember the samples of Tide in the mail!
I think it was!
I remember when "Frampton Comes Alive" was released. It was a BIG DEAL.
Studio quality sound on a live album. Killer guitar work. Tight band.
It's still on my phone's SD card, 43 years later
ursafan40 My older brothers had that vinyl. Still remember the cover. Those were the days!!!
Emily Liberty
You must have had the first SD card made for it to have been on there for 43 years ! ;O)
I've had the album on 8 track, cassette, and still have it on vinyl double album, complete with all the wonderful liner notes.
@Captain Kirk Are you joking , or are you really that obtuse?
@Captain Kirk What a sad little man you are
Emily Graham,
I still have my vinyl. This song got airplay, even though it’s 14 minutes and 15 seconds long!
(Edited to remove time stamp.)
Who’s wine, what wine, where the hell did I dine? Love the line.

That was me last October at the wineries in southern Illinois!!..🤣🤣

As a voice of experience watch out for that homemade stuff you wake up saying who the fuck are you
That guitar was burned in a plane crash and re-united to him 30 years later. He left all the burn marks and plays it again today.
Right on , Peter calls the Les Paul phoenix now , It was his Mojo
I heard that to. Also at The hieght of his career didn't he let some chic crush his heart like he couldn't get over it, spent his money, did his friends and so on.... She was hot but come on man. Yer Frampton it's 1975.......
Oh that is too cool. Didn't know that. Thanks for sharing.
I was lucky enough to see him at the Beacon Theater in NYC the first time he played it live after getting it back. He told the whole story. He always puts on a great show. For a while I'd see him in smaller venues when he was not selling out anymore. I am glad he is now getting the recognition he deserves. Tragic about his illness. But he is always positive and cheerful. He can play gypsy jazz too. Gotta love him!
I heard it was burned in a Freebase accident... lol
I saw Peter live here in Chicago, Illinois last july on his farewell tour at a huge outdoor arena I can tell you this, he hasn't lost a thing. His soloing, dynamics, chord inversions, vocals were all there. He did all his classics and even some blues which blew me away. His encore song was 'Do You Feel (Like I do)'. He must have done 7 or 8 minutes on the talk box alone on that song. The crowd went wild, people were dancing in the aisles and it brought me back to the glorious mid 70's. His opening act was Jason Bonham & The Led Zeppelin Experience. Talk about a real good show - Zeppelin & Frampton. Doesn't get any better!
MEGA
The 70's were wonderful....I remember watching The Midnight Special every week and driving around in my red Chevelle with the windows rolled down while Frampton blasted on my 8 track. Those were the days. Frampton was great, still is, but the attention was on his appearance and it over shadowed his skill. I loved his hair! Thanks to his buddy David Bowie for helping pull him around. Also gotta give a big thanks to Bob Mayo for adding perfect back up. Thanks for sharing.
I remember listening to 'album' formatted FM stations in LA, where the Dj would play an entire side of an album, do a quick break and move to the other side. Now it's all advertising, loud commercials and songs cut off before they are even over.
Same. Only a white 1967 Chevelle SS.
I remember cruising with my older brother listening t all this music on 8track in his 66 Ford Fairlaine GTA. With me a few yrs later on casette in a 69 Impala😜
I agree, Bowie did Frampton a great favor. But hats off to Peter for being ready to take advantage of the opportunity Bowie offered him. I met Frampton in Chicago when he was touring with Ringo. He spoke with me and my friends, signed autographs and was friendly even though he had to get in the van to head to the gig.
Still pissed, my parents would not let me go to his concert.. I think it was 1976 but could have been 1975
The cool thing is he has continued to grow as a musician
James McKellar - Unfortunately he has announced this coming tour will be his last because he’s been diagnosed with a degenerative muscle contraction disease which hasn’t affected his play noticeably yet but probably will within a few years. Sad, but his attitude about it is pretty amazing.
There is an experimental treatment he might try so who knows? But most likely he’s throwing it in after this tour.
Indeed Peter did. The girls used to swoon over his looks, but his fantastic guitar playing and equally good voice was somewhat overshadowed by the popularity of "Frampton Comes Alive". He was part of Humble Pie's early success, also. Peter also credited his mate David Bowie for his comeback, by asking Peter to be the guitarist for his "Glass Spiders" tour.
😱 OMG, what a crush I had on him in the '70s! One of the top guitar 🎸 players of all time and he looked like an angel...
He’s the triple treat. Great songwriter, singer and guitarist.
Peter Frampton.... quick click and automatic thumbs up!!!

@@wingsofpegasus I saw Frampton in concert in 2000 at the Navy base here where I live. He was even better than he was back then. I'd love to see him again before he retires. :'( .
His duels with Steve Marriot on Live at the Filmore were unbelievable with Walk on Gilded Splinters being my alltime favourite music.
Oh yeah…Frampton with Humble Pie!! My very first concert at age seventeen was at The Fillmore East NYC to see Humble Pie, oh what a night, truly awesome! I’ll never forget Gilded Splinters at that show. Pie opened for Eric Clapton, Derek and the Dominoes! Just an unbelievable night. Man, I hear you about the Frampton/Marriott double guitar work!! @@jamesgordonakacrazylegs8222 ya, there were so many good ones. I don't think Kenny's show lasted long. Was the early 70's. I remember all the other ones too. There was so much talent and everyone was different. Now they all sound the same. I miss that stuff!☺
Frampton was beyond good and he still is. I worked in the music dept. of a Zeller's and there was a huge poster of him above. What a cutie!!! It was the early 70's and I was 16!
From 1970 to 1980 I went from 12 years old to 22 years old. What a decade! What a great time to be into music, all kinds of music. I have a handful of artists I call my favorites and Peter Frampton is one of them. Even watching his videos in the last 10-15 years he is still the coolest guy!
Keep up the good work Fil, really enjoy your reactions😎👍
Sat in a bar, got drunk, listening to the entire album, end to end, in San Francisco in 1975...one of the best experiences I had in San Francisco...Remember it as if it happened yesterday
You young uns' have no idea how big Frampton was in the mid 70's. He sold out major stadiums 5-6-7 nights a week for years straight. Something nobody today could possibly do.
NuclearGrizzly Yes, he was pure Gold. All the girls loved him and all the boys wanted to be like him. 😁

Peter Frampton Live, what more can you say? As a kid, we thought his talking guitar was the coolest thing in the World. I need to listen to more Frampton.
Frampton’s MAGIC .... 👍. Those of us old enough to remember, Frampton was huge at the time. Constantly on the radio etc. I saw him in concert in the 70’s, and he put on a fantastic show....” Frampton Comes Alive”.... Yea.!
Fil. Has anyone ever told you how very much you are appreciated? If not , here’s to you. Love you, man.
Thanks!
The "Midnight Special" was treat each and every week. Peter Frampton is a much underrated guitarist, highly skilled in acoustic work as well as electric lead stuff. His period with Humble Pie consists of an aggressive and heavy blues based guitar sound; lest we forget about his vocals which are exemplary. Great player. As usual, a fun and interesting post!
I wish they still had a tv program like this nowadays.
Three years later, Fil-and I still get a kick out of your reaction to this classic by Peter!!
I saw him 3 months before Covid. Man, he ROCKS!
Let me fire-up the lava and strobe lights... ok.... Doooo yoooou feeeeeel liiiiiike weee do... I want to thank you ! Great choice Fil .. I had Frampton Comes Alive on my turntable for months back in the day. Yes I'm old, but still rockin' every night thank you Fil. 😎🎸 Keep the classics rolling in ✌😎
Forget the stobe light fire up the black lights! Lol
The age of the guitar jam. How I long for a return to those days.
That’s was and still is one of the best albums of the seventies...no music like him and gr8 guitar player! I saw him! Again! Wonderful!
I remember watching this as a 13 year old learning guitar, and i was floored! PF tone, phrasing and use of pedals and talk box were so on point! Frampton is probably the prime example of how being promoted and thought of as a teen idol can totally overtake and make people not focus on ability! PF was and still is a master player who NEVER received his due as one of the best of his generation! Another spot on review and analysis!
I love Frampton & I have his Frampton Comes Alive , badass , thank you angel ✌🤘
Saw Frampton play live about 6,7 years back performing at our Erie County fair. It was an absolute beast of a day-- stifling hot and airless, gray and moist and stuffy with intermittent drizzle, and they were playing on an outdoor stage setup that must have blocked the occasional meager breeze off from their backs. Horrible situation for anyone, but you'd never have known it from the band's enthusiasm--- they performed like it was their favorite gig, doing old faves and new jazzy tracks, and were obviously enjoying themselves like crazy. They played longer than they had to, Frampton was amazing, and this song lasted, I think, about 20 minutes and never lost our interest. I wouldn't hesitate to see him again, given the chance. The band was tight; the direction, blissfully loose.
Cool!
Frampton, Boston & Wings were HUGE in 1976...
...thanks Phil for another wonderful musical analysis !!!
I'm proud to say I sat in the 8th row of MSG for a show from that Frampton album tour. It would be a great show for anyone to see but as a 16 yr old it was the greatest thing I ever saw

I have a cd with Frampton backing Bowie in concert.Great piece of musical history captured forever.
Saw him a few years ago at the Pony outdoor stage and he could still bring it big time. Full of energy and the playing and vocal were 'spot on' all these years later.

I like watching YOU, Fil, changing between grins to smiles and then WIDE smiles, knowing and realizing the great parts and the GREATEST parts, like I did 44 years ago when I was 14. Superb analysis as always. Thank you.
Who remembers the impromptu shouts of "Thank You!!" that echoed across school yards, stadiums, streets, etc. from kids all over America?
I had a massive poster of Frampton on my wall as a kid, his shirt off, guitar on and wild smile drawing you in...of course, there was much discussion amongst my friends about his daring lilac satin trousers and incredible wavy hair ..but nothing spelled ROCK at a concert like listening to Do You Feel Like We Do? It immediately put you in a certain frame of mind and we all knew we'd be in for a good night. Rock on Peter!
This album + Bob Seger's Live Bullet were, at their time, the best-sounding live albums. In my opinion there's not a bad track on either one of them. Not many albums you can say that about especially lies. Thanks Fil! Peace as always! 🤘
I'm going to miss them both! ❤️
@@tupelohoney622 I saw him in concert twice and Lexington in 77 and 78 if I remember correctly. I would love to see one more concert with him. Hopefully he'll be coming through close to Kentucky! When he came out with Face The Promise he let people sign up to be on his Street Team. As a member of the street team you got 25 cork coasters with the album on the front and a bunch of Flyers that you could pass out and I passed out everyone and gave away all the coasters except for two which I still have in a box over here somewhere. I'm giving all my rock and roll memorabilia to my son when I pass!
I just checked the concert tour dates, and sad to say I missed him when he was in Louisville and Nashville because I was working at the time. 😭 It's a shame these good concerts don't come along when I'm unemployed right now. Hope you have fun if you get to see him! Peace!

Peter said his career harmonically changed when he converted to the 3 humbucker Les Paul tone (a 1954 LP Custom modified). Peter pretty much was the pioneer of the 3 humbucker LP with a more diverse wiring scheme that gave him more flexibility. He had a master volume and tone for the Bridge and the neck together and then a master volume and tone for the middle pickup. Whereas stock Gibson wiring scheme had that middle humbucker was "live" all the time variable to the volume control.
Peter's rerouted wiring scheme:
Position 1 Option: Bridge with the alternative to blend in the middle or null.
Position 2 Option: Bridge and Neck with the alternative to blend in the middle or null
.
Position 3 Option: Neck with the alternative to blend in the middle or null.
OMG another brilliant performance by Peter Frampton!! Fil, you'd love his newly released memoir Do You Feel Like I Do?
Sadly, due to his degenerative illness which atrophies the muscles in his legs, arms and fingers, his playing days are numbered. Always remembered and treasured for the icon he is.❤️🙏

Peter Frampton, one of the best guitarist of all times and everywhere.
Great selection close to my youngter´s life, Cuban of 61 years of age.
Greetings from Havana, Cuba.
Bought this album brand new when it came out, freaked out when I heard that “squawk box” talking! Played it till the needle went through the grooves! Still get the shivers when he gets through the use of that “new” technology for the day and launches into the big finish.
Peter Frampton uses technology in a good way, to make great music. I saw him live, with the Steve Miller Band, last year, on his birthday. What an amazing musician.
I actually had to buy a second copy of FCA in 1980 because I wore out my first copy!
Another master!
Peter can shred and has so many hits, one of the best!
Frampton comes alive!!
That album alone puts him easily in the top 25 guitarist of all time!!! Simply Extraordinary and he did session work for many bands that wanted his Soul on thier album!!!
Rock!!!
I had the pleasure of seeing Peter play in Detroit during his 1976 tour. Great, unforgettable concert. He truly gave it his all. I continued following him for many years and had numerous albums. I learned many of his songs on my acoustic - he was a real inspiration. But as with many things in life, he fell by the wayside for me, which I now realize was such as shame, because I now know and appreciate the full scale of his talent. He played with George Harrison, toured with David Bowie and the lead guitarist, etc. If you haven't heard Float by Peter and Gordon Kennedy, give it a listen. Incredibly beautiful instrumental. I'm picking up my guitar after a long abstinence and one of the first songs I want to play is Winds of Change. There's a cute story behind that one. Once when he was visiting George Harrison, he was picking up guitars from his wall, and when he was playing a particular acoustic, he asked George, "What IS THIS?" George replied that that was one of his special tunings. "Don't steal it!" When Peter tells the story, he laughs and says, "Well I went home and stole the tuning and that's when I wrote, Winds of Change." Always one of my favorites.
One of the best live shows I saw in SF in 1974!
I was in high school at the time. True guitarists (and musicians) always appreciated his guitar playing, regardless of all the other stuff going on with him and his career. It's nice to see him get the appreciation he deserves.
Fil Peter Frampton seems to always be overlooked when guitar players are ranked. Good show, Jeff in LA USA

Love Frampton...and I believe most of the US fans were going to see his guitar playing (and the females were there for his looks too! 😉). I saw him down here in Florida in the 70s at what were called "Superbowls" because they were held in football stadiums & you had a lineup of THE most amazing bands on one ticket (I was very young, but had a brother who was 6 years older & he took his 8,9,10 year old little sister with him...those are memories that I will always cherish because I got to experience those bands & I was with my big brother who passed away in February about 30 minutes after I'd been there to see him. And he fought hard to stay because I've been fighting throat cancer the last 2 years & he so wanted to be here for me...sorry, guess that was TMI, just trying to explain why I treasure those times so much) and Frampton was great! But I did hear there was a concert maybe in the mid-west where Skynyrd went on first, and that Skynyrd blew him off the stage & the fans weren't happy. I'll have to see if I can track down what concert it was & the comments about it. And these were Frampton fans, who had gone to see him not Skynyrd, saying this. They said at least half the people left. Don't quote me on this...like I said, I'll try to track that info down.
And everyone don't shoot me for mentioning Skynyrd a lot...they're my fav, so I'm unashamedly biased! 🤣
That goodness we had the Midnight Special TV show so that performances like this are still available.
I SAW THIS LIVE AT MY FIRST CONCERT!
AND IT WAS KINDA AWESOME!!💯🤯👏💯😘
I'm sure i watched this when it originally aired. The Midnight Special was a must see every Friday night. All the top bands of the 70's performed their current and past hits absolutely live, exactly how they wanted to do them. At school everyone would be talking about who was going to be on that night. I wish this form would come back, but sadly it seems unlikely to ever happen again.

My Peter Frampton story ...
Frampton was touring the Comes Alive album as I was approaching my 16th birthday. As almost everyone else, I loved the album and listened to it almost endlessly. He was coming to Albuquerque, an hour and a half drive away. Nearly half of my classmates were going. My mother offered to buy two tickets for me and a friend of my choice as a birthday present. I said,
"Oh, I don't know. Thanks Mom but I've heard about rock concerts and I don't think I want to be around all that pot smoke."
:DDDDDDDD
I never again had a chance to see him and regret that decision to this day. Peter Frampton touring the Comes Alive album!!!! Doh!!!
The next year, I attended my first concert, Heart.
When I saw Peter playing 30 days in the hole with Marriott and the Pie I was hooked. Glad he survived to live a long and healthy life. Rock on Pete. And Fil.
The Midnight Special was such a great way to see artists on TV every Friday night back in the day. The artists weren't always my taste, but overall outstanding show. Enjoyed In Concert and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert too, they were the same concept but more rock and roll! 🤘🏻
FIL, I THINK PETER IS ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYERS OF ALL TIME, I AM SAD TO HEAR ABOUT HIS MEDICAL STATUS, AND DOING HIS LAST TOUR, I WISH PETER THE BEST, COUSIN FIGEL
Wow...does that ever bring back memories. The 70's had some amazing rock...imho.
I think everyone I know had Frampton Comes Alive. What an epic album. The album was full of great melodies, ballads, rockers, funk, and jams.
Love the drumming on this track! The guy is all over the kit. Glad to see Peter Frampton getting some play...he really knows his way around the instrument...rarely looks down at his hands! 🎼✌🏻🎸
Hi from Australia. Thanks for critiquing Peter. He is my absolute favourite. Saw your previous Frampton video too. Great job Fil. Susan

👍
I saw him at County College of Morris here in NJ for just a couple of dollars just as Frampton Comes Alive was beginning to blow up. A year later I saw him at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Full cirle I saw him at a local theater here in Morristown NJ in a very intimate setting which was great. The great thing about him is he always looks so happy and really appears to be having fun when he's playing!
Fil does amazing content. No swearing, constructive, very positive, informed and informative , enthusiastic and entertaining. I now realise I'll probably hear soneone who's great who I'd not listened to before!
