Thank you for this video! Simple question - if I was to purchase a DJI Drone today - any Mavic or below drone - do you think that DJI would continue to support it (software, etc) if a ban went into place?
Greg, at 16:00 you mention that some "expert" believes DJI drones have the ability to read heart rate. Even if that were true (it's not), why would that represent a greater threat to National Security than every smart watch which already has the ability to share that info via bluetooth to an app on your phone, and from there to God knows where... My wife proudly shows me her weekly report of how many steps she takes every day while walking, or the rated quality of her sleep every night. Where does that data go?
I’ve reached out several times, with seriousness and all I get back is a bot reply. Could we possible set up events in the same towns as our representatives, for showing them, physically, why we have so much passion? Like you said, you don’t think any one of them have even held or flew one. I would volunteer my time, endlessly! As many do, my entire fleet is DJI, how on earth could I afford to replace any? Flying is the one major thing I wished to do in my retirement. This absolutely feels criminal to me, just because someone bent an untrained ear to some lobbyist, blurting out nothing but a pack of lies, while greedily and secretly, hoping to fill this manufactured void, with their own crappy products! WOW, I guess it’s the American way, these days!!
I'm guessing this is old because the worst case has already happened with it being added to the NDAA and passing the house. That 33% chance of ban has gone up to about 90%
There is no alternative of having any quality... funny thing is the only thing close to an alternative also comes from China. They don't have any proof that DJI is doing anything shady, yet they actively want to ban them for things they don't even know if they are doing or not....... But in the meantime, there is Google Earth and Google maps. SMH.
If it does pass DJI has years of drones already approved by FCC so those approved drones should be available for sale and use right? Can FCC revoke broadcast approvals? I use a fleet of 15 Autels for wildland firefighting. Will those be banned?
Yes, in theory, they would continue to sell old drones for years to come but... they will continue to make drones that the rest of the world will enjoy and we will be left in the dust.
The only way to get your point across to governments is to organise a peaceful demonstration in the capital including, but not limited to 1st responders, hobbyists etc. Organise it with a clear consistent unified narrative. TV Stations, influencers, local and national should informed/invited, to attend. This is just my opinion which is not greater than anyone else's.
I Am about to spend $5K -$10K for new drone equipment. I have DJI Mavic 3 drones. What would you advise me as far as being concerned about the future of DJI support for drones purchased now?
Thats a good question being that there are no consumer-based drones that I am aware of being developed and sold in the U.S. The next closest alternative actually comes from China also.... go figure.
Sticking with my dji drones regardless! This is disgusting, dirty politics period! It's about money, power and control. The solution is to fight back against this ignorant bill!
The Chinese government will dance with joy if we take an economic hit over this. In Broward County, Florida, just one police department had to ground a fleet 74 DJI drones. I heard a call over the radio last week “ toddler walked out of the house in the evening, unable to locate, large lake in the neighborhood”. No thermal drone available to quickly find the child. I didn’t get to hear the outcome of this call, but if this child drowned somewhere in the large lake… by the time you find him or her, resuscitative efforts are less likely to be effective. This would be devastating to the family and also all the first responders that have to deal with the scenario.
15:38 this info is incorrect on DJI drones, if you don't connect to the internet after 30 days the drone will log out of the fly/go/pilot app and your range and other features will be limited until you log back in using your user, password and an internet connection
We have DJI drones that connected to the internet once and never again after that, they work every time from a smart controller that is never connected to anything when outdoors.
Yes, but the drone will only work offline for a maximum of 30 days before you have to log back in using the internet and your DJI account.. and once the 30 days is up, the distance and height you can fly is very limited until you do log back in. We often take starlink on remote.shoots to avoid getting stuck with a drone which can only fly 30m away from the pilot. This includes Mavic 3 with rcpro, inspire 3 RC plus etc.
I guess I was thinking, before watching this video, that upgrading my Air 2S to an Air 4 or to a Mavic 3E would be a safe thing to do. However, now I am concerned that the potential to ruin my business still looms ominously overhead. Another review of the situation by an unrelated person, gave me the impression that the ban would be for any DJI drone purchased after a certain date. Given the discussion here, It seems that any DJI drone, existing or future, owned by me will be banned from essentially all work. Is there any guidance, even with caveats, you can offer on continuing to invest in DJI products? I assume this would affect handheld DJI devices too?
Might as well write a letter to Santa Claus. Your "representative" does not represent you. They represent the corporations that are paying them more money than you'll make in your lifetime.
@@thomashardy9994 Government is so corrupt, I'm not sure that would be enough. We need to force government into submission. Reason and logic clearly don't apply.
I still believe this is driven by Skydio their lobbyists, and some well connected uber wealthy people who simply do not like the idea of flying cameras in the hands of anyone who can afford them or can learn to fly them. Not everyone can. It's a spacial and situational awareness thing. I have a friend who is a licensed real plane pilot who just can't visualize the operation of the drone from a location other than in the seat of the aircraft. I don't understand it because I am usually looking at the screen when I fly. That's like looking out the window of a real aircraft to me. There's also the war machine aspect as we've seen in the Ukraine war.
DJI should put an HQ in USA or a division in USA so the government can fiscal them and no need to ban them, just thinking, maybe with this, they can continue to sale their drones in US territory. Most of the congressman and senate I think they don't know about drones.
Let’s just stick with who makes the best product. Can’t imagine the cost involved being forced to buy American only. I love local, but DJI makes the best products right now. This is anti competition
Autel, when in the game gave DJI a run for the money and actually the Life series kicked DJI's butt before the Air 3 came out. Others can beat DJI if they want, but they would already have to be in the game. Skydio made the X2 which best DJI in some areas, but not in others. Being a DJI fanboy does not make you an expert especially if all you've flown is a DJI. And yet, both Autel and Skydio are no longer in the consumer market.
What satellites do the drones connect to for location? Would that allow for any CCP communication with a “required update” or has this been looked into. I understand it’s “offline” since there isn’t an internet connection, but are they pointing to CCP satellites or which satellites do they talk to?l specifically?
@@markkempton4579 Are you saying that they only use the GPS (American) system but ignore the global navigation satellites from other countries? The United States is the country that has GPS satellites, which are part of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS). Other countries with GNSS systems include: Russia: Has GLONASS (GLObalnaya NAvigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema) Europe: Has Galileo China: Has Beidou Japan: Has QZSS India: Has IRNSS or NavIC, the only regional satellite-based navigation system
@@jerseyshoredroneservices225 I've only flown in the US. Sorry. Regardless, GPS is not a two-way technology. The drone does not have the capacity to broadcast to a satellite.
@@markkempton4579 Even in the US our devices are not limited to the American global positioning system satellites. Yes, GPS devices can connect to other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) satellites. GNSS receivers can use signals from any positioning satellite, including other systems like GLONASS, Galileo, and Beidou, even if GPS signals are blocked. This flexibility makes GNSS receivers more accurate and reliable than GPS alone
While I know the pilot institute has become more of an education company. Is there anyway you guys could manufacture drones. While I am still studying with you guys to get my part 107. Don’t get me wrong I love my DJI mini pro 3 and avata gen 1. But if this ban does pass. We need someone to replace this massive market
Unfortunately drone manufacturing is not something we are capable of or really interested in. It will also take millions of dollars of investment to figure out manufacturing and for R&D. Our core competency at the moment is providing awesome aviation education. But we are honored that you would trust us to do this the right way!
I think you missed the issue of RFID, that FAA law opened the gate to the internet. I know the FAA wanted cellular access to every drone but had to setting on WiFi for the time being, they want to grow their kingdom and control, WiFi is a temporary steppingstone, either way it is a means of access to a drone.
It’s not an international security problem. Our politicians don’t like technology that can catch them on video doing their dirty business. I thought the regs were about air safety. Now it seems it’s about all kinds of crap.
3 yrs. away from their next move. Which will only have 150k drone Pilots nationwide opposing that Ban. By 2030 a full ban on all drones under $30k without Mfg. safety certificate, Fed. authorization, real time tracking, etc. This will all be done in the name of National Security which has taken our freedom from within. Commercial drone delivery services will be fully implemented by 2030. We will be restricted to drone parks. 🙈 🙉 🙊
@@jemadv1594 It feels like we are already in a cage. The no-fly zone around airports makes sense, but local a-holes also ban them from just about every public space. Local parks, beaches, etc. It's an insane overreach that no one voted for.

Thus, I don’t feel she will concede under any circumstance until the elections are over or when the political scene settles. I do plan to purchase some DJI swag. :)
The problem seems to be they think that ccp ballon’s are the same thing as the drones we fly. They think they are the big military drones they don’t realize they are much different than a rc toy. They also don’t understand the data being transferred and the use of that data. They also don’t understand how dji has other tech like microphones and gimbles will be effected.
Legislators may be being fed bad info but it’s there job to vet that info to make sure it’s true and not take it at face value. Skydio is behind this nonsense.
How about you go into a little more detail about "Skydio is behind this nonsense" I'd like to hear it. Considering the fact that Skydio stopped developing consumer drones awhile back it wouldn't make sense to me... but I definitely would like to hear your conspiracy.
My fear is that irresponsible drone use will eventually ruin the use of aerial (civilian) drone use. For example in the recent California wildfires one of the planes used for fire fighting water was recently grounded after being struck by an aerial drone. In the past 1.5 yrs I’ve spent well over $1000 on aerial drones and they’re becoming so widespread they’re becoming a public safety issue. And a yrs or so ago I paid $200 for pilot training but I was so sick most of the year I’ve never taken the course. It’s not very difficult to see what could be very likely that the FAA or some other agency will have to step in and find some way to restrict the use of drones.
This is nothing but anti-competitive activity to benefit Skydio. When will the Justice Department Anti-Trust division and Federal Trade Commission investigate Skydio, Stefanik, and AUVSI (among others) for antitrust law violations?
DJI: publishes applications that do not pass security reviews in stores (DJI Assistance, all of the androiod apps). Self-proclaimed security experts making money off people with DJI drones: we don't get the ban, so unfair.
I am a DJI owner and not happy about latest legislation, but not fair to support drones or other industries to overcharge compared to global market rate. I am an automotive engineer and Japan was harsh, Korea more harsh, now China. Unfortunately, our government in the USA has allowed companies to invest too much in China and now it it hard to find a hammer built in the USA.....GRRR!
When Harley Davidson started losing the 750cc motorcycle market to the Japanese makers in the 1980s, the government stepped in to rescue this American brand…. Why not use that model here? Except that here the Chinese government leans away from the way we do things in the states? What is happening here that no one wants to say?
Being a bit of a cynic, Stefanik's name, because of her "efforts", is known outside her district. Otherwise only a few folk would even know who she was. Now she is (in)famous. As to re-election efforts how much do you suppose that is that worth?
Hm... I wonder how many lawmakers will see their bank accounts swell when American Manufacturers flourish in the wake of them snuffing out the competition. I don't generally believe legislation is for the betterment of this country or its citizens. This isn't a threat to National Security, but the wide open border sure is.... the federal government's priorities are WAY off...
NO it's Skydio crying because they don't have a majority of the US drone market. They stopped selling a consumer drone last year. All they make now are commercial drones and they want US Defense contracts to line their wallets. They already have a government contract. Don't blame it on DJI because they own the market. Make a better priced drone to compete with DJI, no instead we are going to pay politicians and cry on Capitol Hill.
The 3 year ban songs like a compromise. By your own argument it would be catastrophic to completely shut down DJI drones completely. Three year band sounds like harm reduction while reacting to a security threat. Also by your own argument DJI sounds like a monopoly on the drone market. As an investor today would you dump millions into a drone startup? Especially after seeing beans like skydio go under? I would also like to know how you expect government to be accountable for the spending if they threw millions of dollars at an industry? They can't even be held accountable for the money that they spend now... I would also like to hear your solution to the problem? Or do you believe China to be handled?

Like you said, you don’t think any one of them have even held or flew one. I would volunteer my time, endlessly!
As many do, my entire fleet is DJI, how on earth could I afford to replace any? Flying is the one major thing I wished to do in my retirement. This absolutely feels criminal to me, just because someone bent an untrained ear to some lobbyist, blurting out nothing but a pack of lies, while greedily and secretly, hoping to fill this manufactured void, with their own crappy products!
WOW, I guess it’s the American way, these days!!
The government has no right telling you what you can buy or not your money. Any agency that thinks they can needs to DEFUNDED..............
Good job on this and great info
Is it still worth getting a DJI drone right now? Is there any version of the bill that the senate could pass that grounds current drones?
I'm guessing this is old because the worst case has already happened with it being added to the NDAA and passing the house. That 33% chance of ban has gone up to about 90%
Bump for visbility. Section 1722 (b) of H.R. 8070 adds DJI by name to the covered entities list.
Had same impression, the conversation is serious and good, but maybe outdated?
Recorded in early May. Things are changing fast but still a lot of good points that still stand.
So what kind of drones can we use here in the states with the new laws?
There is no alternative of having any quality... funny thing is the only thing close to an alternative also comes from China. They don't have any proof that DJI is doing anything shady, yet they actively want to ban them for things they don't even know if they are doing or not....... But in the meantime, there is Google Earth and Google maps. SMH.
So, I heard that DJI drones will be banned from sale in USA. Is that accurate info. or not?
Is every part of the Skydio drones developed and manufactured in the US?
No, most parts from china, but software and operating systems are American
If we already have a dji drone. Can we still fly and keep it?
Well said Gentlemen!
We've had a bit of good news now, hopefully "our" (drone pilots and folk like PI) efforts are working.
I’m so confused. I thought this had already passed, but I didn’t think it passed in December.
This would be devastating to the family and also all the first responders that have to deal with the scenario.
well stupid people win stupid prizes
I hope to set up a meeting with my representative here in CA. I will be reaching out to get some numbers and supporting data.
Might as well write a letter to Santa Claus. Your "representative" does not represent you. They represent the corporations that are paying them more money than you'll make in your lifetime.
@ifly-fsx well if we do nothing nothing is done. I would rather do something,
@@aaron6516 Sounds like "voting." No one said "do nothing." I'm saying "do something useful."
@@miller-joelI wonder if DJI has a lobbyist to represent their interests?
As someone who works with a small high school football team that relays on drone videos for education purposes, I definitely oppose these bans.
They use GPS satellites. GPS is a one-way signal.
@@markkempton4579
Are you saying that they only use the GPS (American) system but ignore the global navigation satellites from other countries?
The United States is the country that has GPS satellites, which are part of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS). Other countries with GNSS systems include:
Russia: Has GLONASS (GLObalnaya NAvigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema)
Europe: Has Galileo
China: Has Beidou
Japan: Has QZSS
India: Has IRNSS or NavIC, the only regional satellite-based navigation system
@@jerseyshoredroneservices225 I've only flown in the US. Sorry. Regardless, GPS is not a two-way technology. The drone does not have the capacity to broadcast to a satellite.
@@markkempton4579
Even in the US our devices are not limited to the American global positioning system satellites.
Since you guys know the rules and regulations so well. Would that be something feasible for you guys to do to have your company grow and take the next step towards more products? Don’t get me wrong I love my DJI mini pro 3 and avata gen 1. But if this ban does pass. We need someone to replace this massive market
Unfortunately drone manufacturing is not something we are capable of or really interested in. It will also take millions of dollars of investment to figure out manufacturing and for R&D. Our core competency at the moment is providing awesome aviation education. But we are honored that you would trust us to do this the right way!
@@PilotInstitute well I’m glade you guys are here. It is awesome to have you guys present the information in a understandably way
So if DJI is banned could I still legally fly the one I own?
Yes.
Legislatures want to control everything. They also don’t want some drone operator catching them doing their dirty business.
I"m grateful there is some intelligence left in this country to respond to this problem.
I wrote to my senator but doesn’t seem to be helping
Chucks. My city's pd just got a donated m30t full setup..
Did i hear right, that all DJI drone for recreational users only are´nt affected?
Not correct. This would affect ALL new DJI drones if passed, regardless of how they are used. Current DJI drones would not be affected.
It’s not an international security problem. Our politicians don’t like technology that can catch them on video doing their dirty business. I thought the regs were about air safety. Now it seems it’s about all kinds of crap.
They are getting paid by certain companies to eliminate the competition.
3 yrs. away from their next move.
@@jemadv1594 and the same type geofences DJI uses will be employed to shut down your freaking electric car if you get close to out of bounds. Your car will just stop and you will have to RTH.
@@miller-joel it’s sickening.
19:24 I don’t think you will get much “reactive” results if any party (us drone operators in this case) isn’t “scared” enough to speak up. 🤷♂️
I just Bought a Mini 4 Pro - By the time it's wore out - this should be settled.
I will have a direct connection with Ms. S this September. I definitely want to reach out to her about this but I feel this is more of political maneuver than a real concern for security. Thus, I don’t feel she will concede under any circumstance until the elections are over or when the political scene settles. I do plan to purchase some DJI swag. :)
Does this affect RC air plane's or is it just quads. I have not seen anything in the US that is worth a crap made for drone.
Lets goo
DJI and all affected companies should do exactly what TikTok is doing - they just filed an open brief for an unconstitutional ban.
Let's call it for what it is, Rep Stefanie is looking out for former staffer Joe Bartlett who now works for Skydio. Follow the money....
When Harley Davidson started losing the 750cc motorcycle market to the Japanese makers in the 1980s, the government stepped in to rescue this American brand…. Why not use that model here? Except that here the Chinese government leans away from the way we do things in the states? What is happening here that no one wants to say?
That’s why it’s called Government, and not Goverment. As these elected or appointment politicians what to govern over is all.
Being a bit of a cynic, Stefanik's name, because of her "efforts", is known outside her district. Otherwise only a few folk would even know who she was. Now she is (in)famous. As to re-election efforts how much do you suppose that is that worth?
How old is this interview, seems very outdated
What kind of data do they think the Chinese are going to get from my drone that they couldn’t get off of my cell phone.
Chinese communist party will get your name and home address when you fly DJI
No one can be that mean? Have you been paying any attention to the House of Representative sessions?
They didn’t stop the Chinese ballon.
Worried about Drones when the govt. allowed a Chinese spy balloon infiltrate our country and send back intel of various restricted areas. What a joke!
Hey, if Joe can swap us over to all EV in 10 or 15 minutes then this drone thing should be a no brainer. And that makes him a perfect candidate.
Looks likes that US drone manufacture only going with Enterprise drone lines 🧐
This is going to ruin so many businesses at this rate.
There is only drone bans among fear mongers and certain channels will hype it up for click bait
So the problem here is; Chinese surveillance through DJI Drones and microphones?
No, that's propaganda. The real problem is that the government does not represent us.
11:46 That resembles Tiktok. Yet the government is still going after them.
I'm afraid American drone (Anzu) development will be leaving FPV pilots/hobbyist out in the cold.
The CCCP flying spy balloons over the US may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
