If there are serious national security issues, why aren’t the myriad of electronic products made with foreign-made components (computers, cell phones, televisions, security systems, etc., etc.) also facing similar scrutiny and bans?

As the head of a first responder drone unit, I can tell you with 100% truth: there is nothing equivalent in price and capability in the USA compared to the DJI missions we fly. A Brinc Lemur 2 is outrageously expensive, other US drones are very expensive too. I can get 10 Mavic Minis and who cares? They are 500 each. I'd love to buy and support US but China has a major advantage in labor costs and being propped up by the government. Who's going to give us the money to replace all the hardware I have? Who's going to pay the hours of training for my team to get ramped up with new drones? There is a ton of unknowns. Forget the 4th amendment stuff and spying things. I've got easy answers for that but no one will listen to us.

It is called SLAVE labor and human rights abuse that is why China sells cheaper, because American companies IN America hire and PAY Americans to do a job, not give them pennies and or a whip and a cage
So "first responder" why don't you research that fact and then ask is it really cheaper or is it just "cheap" for you !!!
To deny the Constitution and Rights so you do not have to spend a little more $$ is better for you Comrade ?
How many died so many can have those RIGHTS so people like you can deny them and demand ALL Others rights be denied so you and a Few others can have a cheap privilege ?
Yeah you sound like sell out Moss who also things he should have a privilege while deny the rights of all others
Do you know the differences between a RIGHT and a PRIVILEGE
If you do not try educating yourself on the real reality of the subject and not worry you may have to spend a little more because Americans "including yourself" like to get paid for doing a job and not have a Government force you to work for peanuts... !!!
IN case you can not get it I will type it out for you
RIGHTS , are not conferred by anyone, and they cannot be taken away or altered by anyone. They are inherent. Call them natural or God-given, depending on your metaphysical inclination, they belong to all of us equally, simply by virtue of the fact that we are human. Properly understood, the Constitution does not exist to give us our rights, but to protect the rights we are born with.
PRIVILEGES , on the other hand, do not belong to all. They are given to some and withheld from others. They are always conditional, subject to change or outright removal by those in authority controlling them. They are unequal by nature, some people always having more and some less. And often, a privilege involves actually taking something from one group and giving it to another.
Do you grasp the reality now skippy ?

The reason we do not have a list of secure locations over which we cannot fly is because when the government did that during the Cold War a fixed wing airplane pilot's WAC or Sectional would show a prohibited area on it and in 9 out of 10 instances it was showing an underground missile silo. So we were pinpointing for all of the U.S.A.'s enemies all of our defenses. Same with the secure areas like naval ship yards, ammunition storage facitlities in the plains of eastern Colorado, etc. Great idea to tell UAV and full size aircraft pilots where not to fly, but it is a security issue.

if the US could compete against DJI, it would have already been done, so why would we pilots think that in 5 yrs....bam, they suddenly are able to now that DJI is banned (if the bill was successful). It's a pipe dream and as each of you noted, it's not about security but legislating the foreign competition.

One of the biggest issues for a US manufactured drone will be the software. How about we (US government funding and university system base technical work) look to create an open source hardware and software platform based on development of a set of open, published standards that allow, enable, and promote innovation by anyone that wants to participate? There are a wide range of different applications and purposes for flying sUAS in the USA and there is no single manufacturer that will catch up to what DJI has accomplished. This is a situation that would greatly benefit from thousands of brilliant minds loosely working together towards a big goal. I'd be interested in participating in such a consortium.

All foreign electronics being imported into the country should be randomly sampled for penetration testing - One sample could be randomly pulled by customs and sent off for testing. Testing must take under 48 hours so it can be resent on it's path to the original destination.

  • @SW-Video

You guys in this podcast have some great ideas but I believe all of it will fall on deaf ears in DC. They have a goal and a plan on how to achieve that goal. We are not being told what that goal is but we can guess. We are not being represented in a fair way. DC is a guarded club and we ain't in it. I'll continue to hope for common sense to prevail though. I disagree Stefanik is using this as a ladder to climb into the VP slot. There's something else at play here. My gut tells me there are some influential people who simply don't like the idea of people having flying cameras that can film their fancy homes and yards without permission. I think this is their way to put a stop to it through sneaky means using legislation at the federal level. There is something to be said about camera drones being used for nefarious purposes. If the conversation can be brought to dealing with that, maybe we can make some headway. He who controls the narrative, controls the conversation. Change the narrative. The vast majority of us are innocent of any wrongdoing with our drones. We are respectful having no ill intent. Maybe focus on that and all the good things people do with drones like helping SAR find missing people and animals.

It's disappointing that my comment has been removed twice for sharing names not mentioned. I did not know who the individuals were or their roles. I little digging in publicly available information provided an answer. Why I can't share those names here and their associations for anyone that doesn't know is again, disappointing.
If verifiable information leading to clear perspective and valid interpretation can't be shared, what good is public discourse?

If those people that you named had titles maybe you could try using their titles like senator or whatever.

I’ve commented on this before on another video. I think infringes on our civil liberties and constitutional rights. Our government has hiked inflation and allowed lots of other products to be made in China. Obviously this is due to bottom line. They’re worried about profit. So why shouldn’t the people of America feel the same. A better made drone at a lower price is better for the average American’s bottom line. They don’t want to have too much power. The more we can film or might catch filming scares them. They do it to us though. There are cameras on stop lights all over San Diego County. There needs to be checks and balances. We the people need to make our concerns heard and not allow this to come to pass. We need more diplomacy in cases like this and more with other nations even if we choose to disagree.

I'm completely on the side of drone owners and users, and agree with almost all of the ideas being voiced by the hosts of this webcast, but at the present time, this is all political. There is too much paranoia driving the fear of drones, and I know in my state, talking to my senate and house members would do zip because of their political stands. It''s almost like the position against drones is written in concrete by one political party in particular. I think if the political scene changes, most of these anti-drone actions will disappear. If the political scene doesn't change, it can only get worse.

People warned those like Moss but he like all others refused to listen because they had their heads up the FAA when many stated things like this would happen if they gave in to the FAA/Congress over reaching regs/rules when they set out to destroy the Recreational side. BUT little bend and kiss Moss said he spoke for the hobbyists and yet did NOTHING to step up and stop the nonsense. Neither did any so called recreational spokesman. They allowed Commercial businesses run the show and the CDA ( Commercial Drone Alliance ) has spent Billion$ to lobby Congress to steal the NAS we all operated in
The FAA appeased them all by giving them a position and a status and that was more important than the community.
Many like myself stated that when that was allowed they would go after the small commercial folks and the manufacturers they used to do their businesses. Because at that time and even now those like Wing Aviation and Skydio etc and others who make up the CDA was already demanding companies be addressed over their actions here and abroad , even mentioning DJI by name a few years back.
SO now here we are with Politicians once again trying to do foolish things BUT we also have to blame DJI whose own company started the entire RID nonsense( even tho at that time it was called something else ) as their drones already used GPS tracking, data collection and sharing that Governments grounded their own fleet over and then those same politicians placed that same tech on all of us with Remote ID that tracks us by GPS and collects the data and shares it across various entities
A act btw that the SCOTUS stated was a violation of citizens Constitutional rights. Something the paid off Judge in DC stated it did not. Not following precedent and not adhering to the laws of the land, they stated RID was legal ( which again the SCOTUS ) in various cases using different tech that did the exact same thing violated peoples rights.
And would have been addressed had RDQ/Brennan appealed that would have taken it to a court that had ruled earlier that even the FAA registration was unconstitutional, ( But for some reason we will never know because they refuse to speak to anyone ) we have Brennan/RDQ and his legal team MIA and *silent* and refuse to address the subject.
Even now Brennan sold his own Hobby company, so was he threatened, paid off, ? who knows....all we know is they have basically disappeared.
BUT again those great FAA boot lickers who sat with the FAA refused to back the law suit and or any appeal and now here they are "Whining" about a DJI ban.
We have American companies v Chinese ones.
IF DJI wanted to do the right thing they would open a US business and then fall under the same regs/rules as US companies have to abide by and then hire Americans to do the job. That would end any US Politicians whining as it is just a ploy to push other regulations/rules further down the road as the CDA sat with Congress and has demanded the Airspace 400 ft AGL to the surface to operate in and have demanded all others out...
That means the very bow and insert people like Moss and others will lose business if they do, also a fact he was told but chose to ignore and claim no one knew what they were talking about...well who is the real ignorant one Moss ?
Here you are now whining about a DJI ban that could have been avoided had you simply stood up like a man against the regulators, but instead chose to lick boots to get a position...You also get what you ask for ...and you deserve it !!!

  • @ToddMay-z9c

Interesting that DJI would sponsor an organization such as this - But wouldn't even make good with a non profit fire organization that paid full price for a fleet of M30's only to realize their property being devalued with the massive price drops shortly after. It's a horrible business practice to stiff a public safety team a little over 12,000 dollars of devalued equipment and not make good on it.

I fly DJI drones recreationally and enjoy doing it. So, while I support opposing these items in the NDAA, I would like it if you would at least address the stated security reasons for opposing China's drone manufacturing industry. Maybe interview a congressional staffer (or someone from the Pentagon) who could make the case for the security issue from China. For example, I have heard that China will use the data it collects from Chinese-manufactured drones with its nascent artificial intelligence capability to develop novel ways to target not just US infrastructure (water, gas, electrical, etc.) but also its nuclear targeting packages against our civilian targets in the event of conflict over Taiwan. There may be other issues. Let's see what the US government claims. I prefer these issues to be addressed more than intimating that Rep. Stefanik is seeking a VP slot. The latter is more personal opinion, whatever you think of her as a person, than professional judgment. She may well be seeking a political position, but it is off the topic of your subject.

I have 5 DJI drones, have a Part 107 License, but have really only flown recreationally. First drone was a Phantom 2. With Remote ID, it is definitely convenient with the 4Pro... That said, did anyone else pucker up when DJI went to the DJI Fly app to be able to get the drone in the air? I personally felt safer when it was just you, the controller, and the drone. I understand the concern, but I am kind of a tin foil hat kinda person...

Good riddance! I gave up on DJI after 2 flyaways while I was working. Both drones were within the first year of 2 year DJI Care Refresh warranties. Each time, DJI looked at the flight logs, said "We don't know what happened", and sent me $50 off coupon for a new drone. They cost me almost $10k in lost work and drone replacements.

DJI is very intrusive into my use of their drones. They demand updates and communication with them or they will not fly. They do have the capability to do bad things with our data, even though I don't believe they do. You have no way of knowing what data is going back to their servers. Autel does not communicate with the internet, unless I specifically allow it. My Autel drones never even communicate with the Internet, so they can't contact China. The fact that they don't communicate with China and are included, tells me that this has nothing to do with security. Until they close the border to the 10's of thousands of unvetted people, including Chinese military age men, I won't believe this has anything to do with security. They can get better data with a person and a camera.
