Nothing here is really unique to Unreal. Any game engine could do this, the exciting thing here is the work being put in by the people, in creating code and assets, and developing the workflows and data processing. Unreal is just a game engine. "Used unreal to do thing" is a bit misleading, yes, it was used, but so were drones, satellites, custom software etc. As for flight sims, the new one models the whole damn planet, but arguably the most exciting part isn't even that, but actually the weather and aerodynamics simulation it brings. The cloud rendering in the new one is unbeforeseen.
@098765 Craper That's debatable. The only unique advantage unreal currently has, is ninite rendering. And that has yet to be widely applied. Cryengine, Fox engine, Decima, Unity, Frostbite, all have their drawbacks and advantages, and all of !them support all the typical game rendering technologies like normal maps, PBR materials, parallax etc. Cryengine specifically already has geometry scaling "similar" to ninite, has for a long time. Parity between the main engines maintans fairly well.
The new flight sim uses Asobo Studios in-house game engine along with Microsoft's Azure AI, not Unreal unfortunately. But yes the new improvements in Unreal engine 5 are huge, if thats what you meant.
This is actually far from a "clone" of the city. I live on the exact street at 1:13 (新华路 Xinhua Street), and there is nothing alike in the model comparing to the real world. In fact, the model looks more like Tokyo than Shanghai. So apparently, this technology is still in a very early phase. Interesting video like always by the B1M though!
I do wonder how accurate the Chinese government allows this to be of it is accessible from outside the country. Google maps of China for insurance are famously incorrect by not reflecting real GPS coordinates and also containing other intentional errors.
Funny, I also live nearby and can recognize the spot instantly. You can’t take what the B1M said to serious. As if they have a 100% digital twin of a city, it’s natural to use existing 3D objects like signs, benches, etc. to instead of creating all from scratch. That’s why they might have recycled the bus stop sign from HK. Also the real value of such a model is not the exact graphical representation of the real world ...
From what I gather the technology is rather similar to the one use in Microsoft flight simulator 2020 where a lot of area is AI generated. So it probably face the same limitation.
